Combien de fois, à l'époque où j'écrivais Les Carnets du Major Thompson, n'ai-je pas vu apparaître dans mes songes Marmaduke ? Nos discussions étaient terribles. Souvent le Major, rouge et bleu, m'assenait de grands coups d'Encyclopaedia Britannica. J'essayais bien de riposter par un direct-Larousse ou un swing-Littré, mais le Major avait toujours le dernier mot. Finalement, le timbre de sa voix me réveillait : je devais me remettre au travail. Cette voix flegmatique, rocailleuse, métallique, forgée dans les sables de Mésopotamie et tout imbibée de whisky, Pierre Fresnoy la 'restitue' ici de saisissante façon grâce à sa connaissance parfaite de l'anglais et, ce qui est plus rare encore, du français parlé par un Anglais. A cette voix britannique, répond une voix que Jean Nohain qualifierait de 'bien française' et que connaissent tous les Français : celle de Robert Lamoureux qui, en dévoilant au Major les secrets de la France, offre avec Marmaduke le plus curieux contraste. Quant à Pauline Carton, elle ressemble comme une soeur à cette voyageuse mécontente que le Major rencontra un jour dans le train de Bordeaux, et que l'on peut sans doute rencontrer tous les jours dans tous les trains de France... -Pierre Daninos

Seulement, on voulait oublier combien d'hommes, de femmes, d'enfants s'épuisaient dans la boue et le froid pour extraire les minerais, les métaux que réclamaient ces machines, ces outils, ces bijoux, ces ordinateurs... On voulait oublier combien d'enfants devaient se faufiler dans d'étroits et sombres tunnels pour chercher le cobalt, le coltan qu'exigeaient ces batteries, ces automobiles électriques, ces téléphones extra-plats aux innombrables applications.
Dans l'écrin de la musique poétique et humoristique de Michel Bosc, la voix du grand lecteur qu'est Daniel Mesguich narre les aventures d'Anicet, un de ces enfants contraints de courir dans la mine d'une Ile là-bas, bien loin. It also resonated in the European press that expected to see a re-conquest of Mexico without great difficulties. Things would forever be different in the Americas.
150 years later, Cinco de Mayo is firmly established as a party day for millions of people, most notably in America. The streets fill with dances, colorful parades, mariachi music, and lots of Mexican food, as Americans consume 81 million pounds of avocados, millions of bags of tortilla chips, and $735 million worth of beer, not to mention the countless margaritas made with 127 million liters of tequila, a drink that everyone properly associates with Mexico. The celebration is not limited to the Hispanic community, either, as people of all origins commemorate the day to recognize Mexico's contribution to North American history or to have fun and drink more tequila than ever.
