I’ve met so many brilliant people as I traveled the globe and have had some fascinating conversations that I’ve wished had been recorded so I could share them with you - this podcast was a way for me to recreate those moments and let you in on some fantastic insights. My current conversations center around one objective: what's next for companies and individuals as they look to innovate and grow. I hope these conversations inspire you as much as they have inspired me. Whether I am preparing for a keynote speech or writing for publications such as Harvard Business Review and Huffington Post, these are my go-to people. My goal with the What’s Next! podcast is to keep you thinking and to challenge you to think about What’s Next!

Bringing Radical Respect to Your Team with Kim Scott

jeudi 5 septembre 2024Durée 36:56

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week, I welcome Kim Scott back for the third time on the podcast. She is the author of a new book called Radical Respect: How to Work Together Better, and of course, Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity. She is the co-founder of the company Radical Candor. Kim was a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, Twitter, and other tech companies. She was a member of the faculty at Apple University. Before that, she led AdSense, YouTube, and DoubleClick teams at Google.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone struggling with giving or receiving feedback in a professional setting.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… respect is critical in the workplace, especially when there are many differing opinions and styles. But how do you practically go about fostering a culture of respect? It’s not by keeping your opinions to yourself. In fact, Kim says sharing feedback and making space for disagreement is a sign of respect for one another.

Key takeaways:

  • Respect begins with unconditional regard for humanity and it shouldn’t need to be earned

  • We can disagree and do it in a respectful way

  • Kim’s three steps to approach a boss to share criticism are: solicit feedback, focus on the good, ask if it’s a good time to share your thoughts

WHAT I LOVE MOST… Kim says you can’t address all of the unconscious biases in the world, but you can (and should) address the ones that will get in the way of your team working together.

The Illusion of Innovation with Elliott Parker

jeudi 29 août 2024Durée 26:23

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week Elliott Parker joins the podcast. He is the founder and CEO of High Alpha Innovation, a venture builder that partners with corporations, universities, and entrepreneurs to co-create startups that solve compelling problems. He built his career in strategy consulting at Innosight, the firm founded by Clayton Christensen, in corporate venturing, and as an entrepreneur bringing new ideas to market. To date, he has launched over 40 venture-backed startups, and he has a new book called The Illusion of Innovation which came out earlier in 2024.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… business leaders and executives looking to understand the challenges of true innovation.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… in this thought-provoking episode, Tiffani sits down with innovation expert Elliott to discuss why innovation might be more illusion than reality in today’s organizations. Elliott argues that many innovative efforts are a charade and he challenges leaders to re-think their goals.

Key takeaways:

  • We're really good at running large organizations, but the optimization for safety and predictability comes at the cost of innovation

  • In nature, innovation happens chaotically and without control, something we should emulate in organizations

  • We need more experiments that are fast, cheap, and maybe even a little weird

WHAT I LOVE MOST… what Elliott says we can learn from Steph Curry about running big companies, “Our companies need to be taking shots close to the net, but also making sure we're doing it beyond the three-point line, where the magnitude of correctness matters a lot.”

Balancing Performance and People with Jerry Colonna

jeudi 27 juin 2024Durée 27:07

Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week, I have the honor of welcoming back for the second time, Jerry Colonna to the show. He is a leading executive coach who uses the skills he learned as a venture capitalist to help entrepreneurs. He is co-founder and CEO of Reboot.io, the executive coaching and leadership development company, host of the Reboot podcast, and author of a new book called Reunion, which came out at the end of 2023 and also Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up. Previously, he was a partner with JPMorgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of JP Morgan Chase. He joined JP Morgan from Flat Iron Partners, which he launched in 1996 with his partner Fred Wilson, and Flat Iron became one of the most successful early-stage investment programs in the New York City area.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… aspiring leaders seeking meaningful growth.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… leadership is a lifelong practice. There is no playbook, but with self-inquiry and continuous personal growth, leaders can tap into their fullest potential over and over again. Jerry shares insights from his latest book on how leaders can look within to drive change beyond themselves.

Key takeaways:

  • Successful leaders balance high performance with cultivating a supportive and inclusive culture.

  • Leaders must learn to handle challenges and failures gracefully, using them as opportunities for growth and team development.

  • Even without direct authority, individuals can lead and influence.

WHAT I LOVE MOST… the self-awareness of tuning into yourself while keeping an eye on the world at large. Jerry says this looks like asking yourself: how am I reacting? What am I doing? What am I bringing into this conversation?

RELOAD: Making Your Emotions Work for You with Justin Bariso

jeudi 29 septembre 2022Durée 34:48

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week I am excited to revisit our conversation with Justin Bariso. Justin is an author, columnist, speaker, and consultant, and his thoughts on leadership management and emotional intelligence have been featured by Time, Business Insider,  CNBC, and Forbes among others. He is the author of “EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence," which uses fascinating research, modern examples, and personal stories to teach you how to make emotions work for you. Today,  Justin focuses on helping others harness the power of emotion for good.

You can read Justin’s work on INC.com, where over a million people a month read his column on emotional intelligence and leadership management. Justin has been recognized by LinkedIn as a top voice in leadership management and workplace culture.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… This episode is a reality check for all of us. It is all about investing in the emotional side of our interpersonal interactions as humans both in the written word, as well as in the spoken word.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… We spend so much time talking about the academic side of leadership, growth, marketing, and sales. We forget to account for our human emotions in a field that is so inextricably tied to human interaction. No matter how much time we take to think about things and to examine our own communication style, our own emotional style, we’re still limited by our own perspective, by our own experiences and biases.

WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST It was wonderful to have Justin come on and give us a gentle tap to remind us how important the human aspect of business and interaction is, and of course, tied to that is our rich emotional life.

What To Ask with Andrea Olson

jeudi 22 septembre 2022Durée 30:35

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week we investigate the thought process behind customer feedback methods with Andrea Olson, who guides us through the cognitive method for discovering hidden customer needs, converting them quickly into differentiators, and avoiding the pitfalls of traditional research.

Trained as a behavioral scientist, differentiation strategist and customer-centricity expert, Andrea Olson teaches executives the art and science of brand differentiation through understanding customer behavior. She is a 3x book author and an ongoing contributor to multiple major publications including Entrepreneur Magazine, Chief Executive Magazine, and Rotman Business Magazine (University of Toronto). Andrea is also literally a world traveler, having worked in over 12 different countries throughout her early career. She also serves as an instructor for the University of Iowa Venture School, guest lecturer, and Business Coach for the Tippie College of Business Startup Incubator.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…  people who want to learn how to ask the right questions to customers and implement that feedback into product innovation and  business models.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… sometimes when it comes to thinking about what customers what, we end up like a dear in headlights. The first step of the process is to start with what you’re trying to understand and frame the problem from that viewpoint. Why are customers currently using your product? Does it address a direct need for the customer?  What value does the product bring to the consumer to enhance their life? Putting yourself in the perspective of the day-to-day life of customer is the mentality we need to achieve product success.

WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST Ultimately, Andrea understands that the fundamental success of customer-centric practice is to understand your audience on a human level. Her insights reveal that customer solutions are not one-sized fit all, and we need to think about the needs of each of the different demographics within our audience to truly innovate the product and the business. We have to stop and really consider how people really behave.

RELOAD: Building Trust in an Influencer Market with Tom Stockham

jeudi 15 septembre 2022Durée 34:15

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

On this Reload episode, I am excited to have the innovative Tom Stockham on the show. Tom is a passionate champion of disruptive technologies who began his career as an associate at BCG, immersed in the shift to “big-box” retail. He later served as president of Ticketmaster.com, where he helped lead the transition to online ticketing. Then, as CEO of Ancestry.com, he built one of the Internet’s first online content subscription businesses. Today, as CEO of ExpertVoice, Tom leads the company in pioneering a new influencer-marketing category that’s transforming commerce. He’s devoted to the mission of creating a better buying experience for brands, retailers, and consumers through a large network of authentic influential experts who make trusted recommendations. I am absolutely thrilled to be speaking with Tom Stockham on the What’s Next! Podcast today!

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… passionate disrupters, innovators, and those interested in learning more about influencer marketing.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Brands should always put trust at the center of their organization and make a concerted effort to build it up over time. Increasingly, the sources brands are and should be using to do this are Influencers. It’s time to shift the balance, and shift resources, from speaking on your own behalf as a brand, to finding trusted figures that can recommend your brand and speak on your behalf in a trusted way. If you are going to do this well, you need to think about who is going to be best to speak on your behalf, how you are going to get them to do so and be more articulate about your brand, and where that influence is going to take hold such that it is beneficial to your brand.

WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST Talking to an innovator who has been involved with so many major industry transitions. Now he’s driving the conversation around Influencer marketing, and he feels that this is the next great frontier.

jeudi 8 septembre 2022Durée 33:51

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week I have the wonderful pleasure of speaking with Horst Schulze. Horst is a legend and leader in the hotel world and his teachings and vision have reshaped the concepts of service and hospitality across industries. His professional life began over 65 years ago as a server's assistant in a German resort town.

He’s worked for both Hilton Hotels and the Hyatt Hotels Corporation before becoming one of the founding members of The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company in 1983. During his tenure at The Ritz Carlton, he served as President and COO and under his leadership The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company was awarded the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award-twice-making it the first and only hotel company to ever win even one!

In 1991, Horst was recognized as "corporate hotelier of the world" by HOTELS Magazine, and in 1995, he was awarded the Ishikawa Medal for his personal contributions to the quality movement. After leaving The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, Horst went on to found The Capella Hotel Group, a luxury hotel company managing some of the most elite properties worldwide. Today, Horst serves on various boards and acts as a consultant across industries.

He is currently completing his seminal book on creating excellence. I am absolutely thrilled to be speaking with Horst Schulze on the What’s Next! Podcast.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone looking to be inspired and motivated to generate excellence and work with purpose!

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… It is imperative to be driven by purpose. When you are focused on your purpose and providing the best service or product, when you are employee first and customer-centric, and when you strive for excellence above all else, the financial reward will follow.

Reculturing Your Company with Melissa Daimler

jeudi 1 septembre 2022Durée 27:45

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week we take on the world of cultural innovations with organizational leader and learning strategist Melissa Daimler, who guides us through the continuous act of re-designing, reimagining, and re-connecting our behaviors, processes, and practices that make up culture.

Melissa Daimler is the Chief Learning Officer of Udemy, a leading destination for learning and teaching online. She is helping the company evolve their platform and approach to learning, helping the global workforce also re-design how they think about culture and work. Prior to Udemy, she launched Daimler Partners, a boutique advisory and coaching company that worked with founders and leaders to help them design and scale their culture. Daimler led HR for a fast-growing venture-funded startup. She also created and built Learning & Organizational Development functions for Adobe, Twitter and WeWork. Daimler is a speaker, panelist, and contributor to Harvard Business Review (HBR) and Forbes.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…  people who want to improve their own lives by learning and then help others by creating a culture where learning is encouraged and explored.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… culture is a loaded word that holds a lot of different meanings depending on who you ask. For a while, business had the idea of onsite amenities, wellness programs, company retreats, and other perks, but focusing on these external benefits instead of individual needs wasn’t integrating people into a bigger more meaningful system. Ultimately, culture is what you make of it together with the people around you and a more strategic approach is to create a culture where work gets done and people have the opportunity to learn and grow in their role and beyond.

WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST Melissa believes culture is an “active process” created together by members of the community you’re engaging with, so whether it’s within the boundaries of the workplace or even the world at large, we must work together with each other to establish the values we hold dear and reinforce those ideals in our day-to-day behaviors and practices.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… salespeople–which, according to Ryan, is everyone if you think about it!

RELOAD: What You DON’T Know About Innovation with Linda Hill

jeudi 18 août 2022Durée 38:32

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova.

This week we rewind back to our early history in the archives and revisit the conversation with leadership and innovation expert Dr. Linda Hill, who navigates us through both the theoretical aspects of inspirational leadership while providing a practical set of instructions for how to put it in practice for your daily life.

Linda Hill is the Wallace Brett Dohm Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and the chair of the Leadership Initiative. She’s is regarded as one of the top experts on leadership, is the co-author of Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of Leading Innovation and Being the Boss. Dr. Hill is also the co-founder of Paradox Strategies and the co-creator of the Innovation Quotient. She was named by Thinkers50 as one of the top 10 management thinkers in the world in 2013 and received the Thinkers50 Innovation Award in 2015.  Her TED Talk, How to Manage Our Collective Creativity, has gotten more than 2 million views.

THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…  leaders and aspiring innovators.

TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… There is a misconception about leadership and leading innovation.  Leadership is communicating a vision and inspiring others to fulfill that vision.  Leading innovation is about creating an environment for people to be willing to go down that innovation path with you. The innovation path is paved with a greater purpose to do the hard, emotional, and intellectual work of innovating.

According to Dr. Hill, here are the 3 things we know about innovation:

  1. Innovations are not the result of individuals having ‘aha’ moments but are a result of a diverse collaboration of people.
  2. You cannot plan an innovation; it’s a messy process of discovery riddled with error.
  3. Innovations are a combination of ideas.

If you want to lead and inspire innovation, you must have a culture where people are willing to get their hands dirty but also feel like they are part of the process.

WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST This episode is a crash course in how to be a leader and leading change when you are trying to drive innovation.  Yes, leading change is different from leading innovation - it’s about creating an environment to let people co-create with you.  Simply, let yourself breathe and give yourself and your team time to try things.  Finally, I love Dr. Hill’s idea that innovation is a voluntary act…a bottom-up journey and not the other way around.
