Kate and Jerry Show - Part 1: The Looming Corporatization of Healthcare.03 Oct 202300:16:56

In today's episode, I'm joined by Kate Markland, as we embark on a transatlantic conversation, highlighting the universality of healthcare challenges, both in the U.S and the UK.

While we might be miles apart, Kate and I quickly realized that the core issues impacting clinicians and clinic owners are quite universal. Despite cultural nuances, there's a shared struggle: local practitioners feeling overwhelmed and crushed by the looming corporatization of healthcare. This corporatization often overshadows the personalized and unique care these local practitioners bring to the table.

Through our conversation, we dive deep into understanding the need for solid foundations in any healthcare practice. Drawing inspiration from successful corporations like Starbucks and McDonald's, we discuss the importance of not just emulating their business strategies, but also ensuring an optimal patient experience. We emphasize that while creativity and personalization are crucial, the basics and foundational work can't be ignored.

The potential in healthcare is immense, and both Kate and I believe that with the right approach, small practitioners can offer transformative experiences to their communities, ones that even the big corporations can't rival.

Metrics That Matter For Practice Success (And Why You Need Them) with Mike Major, Physio and Founder of ClinicDash11 Jul 202300:54:38

Today I got to talk with Mike Major, Physiotherapist and Found of ClinicDash. Mike discusses his background in the military and leadership training, which instilled in him the importance of communication and teamwork. He also talks about his experience working for a national company and managing multiple clinics, which ultimately led him to realize the misalignment between his values and the prevailing model of seeing multiple clients per hour.

Physical Therapy in the Maternity Ward with Dr. Rebeca Segraves, DPT30 May 202300:25:59

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Rebecca Seagraves, DPT, who is revolutionizing the way occupational and physical therapists serve clients in the hospital. Dr. Seagraves focuses on training acute care therapists to support individuals undergoing birth and pelvic surgery within 24 to 48 hours. The importance of this work becomes evident when considering that cesarean sections are the most common surgery in the United States, outnumbering knee replacements.

Dr. Seagraves emphasizes the need for equitable care and highlights the alarming rates of maternal deaths in the country, particularly among black women. By expanding the role of therapists in the hospital setting, Dr. Seagraves aims to make a life-saving impact during the critical first few days after surgery. She has already trained therapists in over 60 hospitals and continues to create job opportunities for acute care therapists. The podcast concludes with a discussion on the potential for greater impact by addressing the needs of patients earlier in their healthcare journey.

A message from Dr. Rebeca Segraves, DPT:

"After undergoing several major surgeries to correct the length of my leg, I have a deep appreciation for the mental, physical, and financial impact that’s associated with recovery.

I recognize that our current medical, educational, and business models simply do not include the time and resources needed to prioritize wellness and maximize success.

I am dedicated to enhancing women’s health and financial literacy throughout the lifetime and enabling those I teach to do the same.

We deserve to perform at our best. Our autonomy is a priority."

Breaking the Mold: How Authenticity Leads to Better Patient Care - Interview with Speaker Coach, Dave James13 Aug 202401:08:07

In this episode, I sit down with Dave James, an “irritatingly good speaker” and coach who helps business owners find their voice with authenticity, fun, and confidence. A professional speaker and 'tattooed Brummie with a beard', Dave brings a unique blend of humor, honesty, and real-world experience to our conversation about something we all need more of—authenticity.

Dave’s journey from podiatrist to business and speaker coach coach is packed with insights on how staying true to yourself can actually make you a better professional. We dive into the "professionalism paradox"—how trying too hard to be ‘professional’ can sometimes bury your personality—and why that’s a problem in healthcare.

We also touch on the importance of trust, empathy, and just being present with patients. Dave shares some great stories and tips on how to navigate the tricky balance between being yourself and meeting the demands of your job. And of course, we couldn’t resist geeking out over some music talk, including a fun side conversation about our love for Rage Against the Machine.

If you’re in healthcare (or any profession, really) and have ever felt the pressure to fit into a mold, this episode is for you. It's all about finding that sweet spot where professionalism and personality meet, and how that can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved.

Making the Switch From Reactive to Proactive Care - Interview with Dr. Rebekah Griffith, DPT - Part 208 Aug 202400:40:14

In this compelling second part of my conversation with Dr. Rebekah Griffith, we dive deeper into the evolving landscape of physical therapy and its role in transforming patient care. Building on the themes from Part 1, Dr. Griffith and I discuss the concept of "top of scope" practice—redefining how physical therapy is delivered and challenging the traditional settings where it’s provided.

Dr. Griffith explores the urgent need to shift from reactive to proactive care. She critiques the current system where physical therapists often operate in silos, waiting for referrals rather than reaching out to patients in need. This episode addresses the gaps in our approach, highlighting how the profession can move upstream to prevent complex health issues from arising in the first place.

She highlights the real-world challenges faced by manual laborers, like HVAC technicians, who are at risk of losing their jobs due to health issues such as dizziness. Dr. Griffith argues for a transformation in how we address such problems, advocating for direct engagement with employers to provide preventative care and comprehensive management solutions that can keep skilled workers employed and functional.

She emphasizes the need for physical therapists to take a leadership role in care coordination, moving beyond traditional clinic settings to offer services that include managing insurance, accompanying patients to appointments, and integrating with community wellness programs. By building and monetizing communities, PTs can proactively address health issues before they escalate, ultimately reducing downstream costs and improving patient outcomes.

This episode challenges healthcare professionals to expand their mindset and skill set, encouraging them to adopt innovative approaches and educational reforms to practice at the top of their scope.
