Ep 55: Healing Through Words; Guest Melissa Desveaux on Writing, Grief, and Finding Support 04 Aug 202400:47:55

Welcome to another heartfelt episode of the What I Wish I Knew After Pregnancy Loss podcast. In this episode, we sit down with the inspiring Melissa Desveaux, a mother of two boys and four angel babies, who resides in Sydney with her family.

Melissa is not only a devoted mother but also a best-selling author of seven books and an author consultant who helps others share their stories and make an impact in the world. Melissa opens up about her journey through multiple pregnancy losses, starting with her first miscarriage in 2017, followed by a stillbirth a year later.

She candidly shares the emotional turmoil she faced, from the fear and heartbreak of her initial loss to the profound impact of knowing her daughter wasn't growing during the final weeks of her pregnancy.

Melissa describes how journaling and creating memory albums became a crucial part of her healing process. She continues by discussing the challenges and emotional toll of subsequent miscarriages and the joy of finally welcoming her two boys into the world.

Through her experiences, Melissa found solace and healing in writing, which led her to create a series of compilation books titled "Letters of Love" that offer a voice to other mothers who have faced similar losses.

She explains the therapeutic power of journaling and how her journals, designed to guide women through their emotions over 30 days, can help them understand their grief and healing journey.

Melissa also highlights the importance of finding support, whether through writing, talking to someone, or reaching out to supportive networks like the Pink Elephant Support Network. She emphasises that while writing can be a powerful tool for healing, it is essential to seek professional help if needed. As the conversation unfolds,

Melissa shares her plans to create thoughtful sympathy and remembrance cards tailored specifically for those who have experienced pregnancy loss, providing a meaningful way for friends and family to show their support.

She reflects on the things she wishes she had known during her losses, such as understanding medical procedures and knowing what resources were available. Melissa's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of sharing one's journey.

Through her books, journals, and upcoming projects, she continues to offer comfort and support to those navigating the difficult path of pregnancy loss. To connect with Melissa and explore her work, visit her website:

16. Creating Support and Guidance After Baby Loss with Rochelle Olsen27 Aug 202300:48:19

On today’s episode, I am joined by Rochelle Olsen. Raised in western NSW, Australia, Rochelle knows all too well the challenges that rural living can present. Being a career clinical pharmacist for over 20 years, Rochelle suddenly found herself choosing between surviving baby loss and the career she had built her identity around. She experienced a missed miscarriage in 201 which was incredibly uninformed and frightening. Then, her firstborn son, Edward, died at 7 hours old. She found unacceptable gaps in the support and guidance after baby loss and decided to do something about it. She sold her pharmacy and whilst she went on to have 2 beautiful earth side boys she also experienced a second miscarriage. She trained as a Pregnancy Loss Practitioner (with the Institute of Healing through Pregnancy Loss) grief and loss support worker, and became mental health first aid accredited. Now she is a lamplighter for baby loss mums in rural Australia when they need it most. In today’s episode, we are talking about the lack of support that she received and that she needed so desperately and how she uses her experience to help others in their time of need with baby loss. Tune in to hear more Rochelle’s story and how she supports baby loss mums.

15. Finding Beauty in Grief and Trauma: The Rose Bush Poem20 Aug 202300:08:31

In this episode, I am sharing a beautiful poem written by my grandmother, Mel Hardy.
The poem was actually written about my Mum after my dad died. My grandma said, she was the rose bush.

The poem is about a rose bush and talks about grief, trauma, and hope.

Over time, this poem has taken on a deeper meaning for me. The poem compares the pruning of a rose bush to the challenges we face in life, explaining how the resilience and growth that come from difficult experiences shapes us.

With sun, rain, and new growth, the rose bush becomes stronger and more beautiful. This poem explains that there is hope and strength on the other side of hardship.

🎧 Tune in to hear the poem and let me know your thoughts!
