From Knock To Neuroinflammation: A Naturopathic Roadmap For Concussion Care with Louise Cork20 Nov 202500:45:46

What if the real fallout from a head knock is not the moment of impact, but the silent systemic storm that unfolds in the weeks, months and even years that follow?

In this powerful episode, clinical naturopath Louise Cork reframes concussion as a whole-body injury that is widely underreported, frequently misunderstood, and too often treated as an isolated knock to the head. Drawing on years of clinical experience, Louise explains why symptoms can appear long after the incident, how intestinal permeability and a disrupted microbiome can amplify neuroinflammation, and why a gut-first approach often becomes the missing link in recovery.

We explore the systemic cascade that follows impact: increased intestinal permeability, a leaky blood-brain barrier, microglial priming, altered HPA axis signalling and hormone shifts such as low testosterone in men. Louise shows how these shifts can present as headaches, fatigue, anxiety, poor stress tolerance and slow injury recovery. A compelling motocross case study highlights how mapping a patient’s clinical timeline across body systems can reveal the turning points many people overlook.

We then move into practical strategies. Louise shares evidence-informed tools to repair the terrain and calm an oversensitised brain, including stool-guided treatment plans, endotoxin control with SBI and S. boulardii, targeted probiotics, and nutraceuticals such as saffron for mood and NFkB regulation, PEA for endocannabinoid balance and pain, omega 3s for inflammatory resolution, and thoughtful curcumin use that considers COX LOX balance without overloading the liver. We also explore sleep as a primary therapy, the role of the glymphatic system in clearing neuroinflammation, and how nutrients like L-theanine can deepen rest without immediately reaching for melatonin.

Prevention is a major focus. Whether you are working with athletes, military personnel, domestic violence survivors or high-risk workers, Louise outlines how optimising gut health, sleep, recovery rituals and nutritional foundations can reduce the fallout when impacts occur.

If you have had a knock, care for someone who has, or support patients navigating persistent symptoms, this episode offers a clear and actionable framework: assess deeply, repair the gut, calm the brain, support sleep and tailor the plan to the individual.

If this episode supports you or someone you love, follow the show, share it with a teammate or colleague, and leave a review so more people can access these tools.

The Gut–Skin Conversation: Decoding Acne Through the Microbiome with Asha Evertsz06 Nov 202500:48:58

What if adult acne isn’t hormonal after all, but an inflammatory signal from the gut asking for help?

In this thought-provoking episode, naturopath Asha Evertsz unpacks the gut–skin–brain axis and reveals why most adult acne is less about hormones and more about systemic inflammation, microbial imbalance, and stress. Drawing on years of clinical experience treating complex female acne, Asha reframes the condition as a terrain issue, not a topical one, where digestion, bile flow, and microbial diversity determine how the skin behaves.

You’ll hear how chronic stress, impaired digestion, and microbiome disruption from antibiotics, the pill, and Roaccutane alter immune pathways and ignite the mTOR signalling cascade that fuels breakouts. Asha walks through the stool markers that matter, including secretory IgA, zonulin, SCFAs, and Akkermansia, and explains the overlooked roles of bile, stomach acid, and pancreatic enzymes, her “guardians of the gut.” She demystifies the H. pylori connection, showing how low stomach acid and disrupted FOXO1 and IGF-1 pathways link directly to acne through poor absorption, excess sebum, and inflammation.

From there, we get practical. Asha outlines her phased gut-repair framework: fortifying mucosal defences, feeding the microbiome with fibre and polyphenols, introducing strain-specific probiotics, and only then layering in antimicrobials like berberine, a clever mTOR modulator. She shares clinical pearls on using bovine immunoglobulins to rebuild IgA and barrier function, timing omega-3s once bile flow is restored, and using zeolite, curcumin, and green tea to bind and calm the system during detox. From the outside in, she explains how corneotherapy protects the skin’s acid mantle and microbiome with topical pre-, pro-, and postbiotics, ditching harsh actives that create “leaky skin.”

Whether you’re a practitioner ready to move beyond surface-level acne care or a clinician refining your gut-first protocols, this conversation offers a test-led roadmap for rebuilding both inner and outer barriers, turning chronic flare-ups into calm, resilient skin.

Ubiquinol: The Missing Link in Cardiovascular Health with Dr Ross Walker03 Jul 202500:43:28

Is Ubiquinol the Missing Nutrient for Lifelong Heart Health?

In this eye-opening episode of Wellness by Designs, Dr Ross Walker, a renowned cardiologist with 25 years dedicated to preventative medicine, challenges the conventional approach to heart disease, statins and cholesterol management. Central to the discussion is ubiquinol, the active form of CoQ10, essential for mitochondrial energy production and a powerful antioxidant. Dr Walker explains how our natural production of ubiquinol begins declining around age 30 and drops sharply by 50, contributing to fatigue and reduced cardiovascular resilience.

Dr Walker explores why many patients with “normal” cholesterol still develop significant coronary artery disease, arguing that coronary calcium scoring offers a far superior risk assessment tool than standard cholesterol tests. Dr Walker also addresses statin-associated muscle symptoms, recommending 150 mg of ubiquinol daily for statin users, citing research showing a 50% reduction in muscle problems, and up to 300 mg for those with heart failure to support cardiac function and endothelial health.

From mitochondrial health to protection against oxidative stress, this episode highlights why ubiquinol may be a cornerstone in maintaining cardiovascular wellness and why a more personalised, evidence-based approach is needed to truly prevent heart disease.

Beneath the Surface: Functional Strategies for Treating Eczema with Rebecca Hughes19 Jun 202500:51:43

Is it time to rethink how we treat atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is more than skin deep—and naturopath and award-winning clinician Rebecca Hughes is here to prove it. In this practical and insightful episode, Rebecca shares her integrative, root-cause approach to eczema that goes far beyond suppressing symptoms with topical steroids.

Drawing from extensive clinical experience, Rebecca highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis, noting that conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and lupus are often misidentified as eczema—leading to ineffective treatment. She walks practitioners through key investigations, from food intolerance and intestinal permeability testing to genetic susceptibilities, that help identify true inflammatory drivers.

Rebecca also outlines her foundational nutrient protocol, including zinc, vitamin D, vitamin A, quercetin, and glutamine, and discusses how these work synergistically to modulate immune response, stabilise mast cells, and repair gut integrity. She also addresses overlooked environmental triggers like mould and water-damaged buildings, as well as the clinical importance of emotional support, sleep hygiene, and managing the psychological toll of visible skin conditions.

Clinicians will find practical strategies for supporting patients through topical steroid withdrawal, tips on using bleach baths safely for Staphylococcus aureus overgrowth, and why children with eczema require particularly vigilant care.

With a soon-to-be-released practitioner course on atopic dermatitis, Rebecca equips healthcare professionals with the tools they need to treat this complex condition confidently and holistically.

Managing Endometriosis and IVF with Jade Walker 17 Feb 202200:35:15

Joining us today is Jade Walker, a Naturopath who specialises in Women's Reproductive issues, gut issues and chronic immune disorders issues.

Today we'll be discussing How to manage Endometriosis and IVF.

About Jade Walker
As a degree-qualified Naturopath who’s worked amongst many health professionals, Jade has been able to help many people recover and live lives they didn’t think were possible.

Personally, she experienced a long-term battle with terrible period pain, gut issues and wavering moods before finally realising she had SIBO and endometriosis. She went on for years (in fact 18 years ’til diagnosed endo), not getting answers. Multiple visits to the ED, doctors and even a laparoscopy, and every time she was told everything’s “normal”.

It wasn’t until studying a bachelor of health science in Naturopathy that Jades eyes opened to the possibilities of 1) what her condition could be and 2) what can actually be done to heal.

So after researching, healing herself, and helping hundreds of clients, Jade now dedicates her life’s purpose to help other women be able to experience a better quality of life.

P.S. my second laparoscopy with an advanced trained excision surgeon did indeed confirm I had endometriosis.

GLP-1 Medications in Practice: Clinical Insights with Robbie Clark05 Jun 202500:39:46

Why These Drugs Aren’t Magic Bullets—And How to Maximise Their Clinical Impact

The sharp rise in GLP-1 agonist prescriptions – up over 42% in Australia since 2019 – is reshaping how we approach weight loss and metabolic health. But are we ready to support patients beyond the script?

In this evidence-informed episode, dietitian and exercise scientist Robbie Clark joins us to unpack the clinical realities of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy®. Far from being quick fixes, these medications work best when combined with targeted nutrition, resistance training, and gut support.

Robbie explores how GLP-1 agonists enhance insulin secretion, suppress appetite, and deliver cardiovascular benefits, while sharing practical strategies to enhance patient outcomes and minimise side effects. From optimising protein intake (1.2–1.6 g/kg) to prevent muscle loss, to managing nausea and reflux, you’ll gain the tools to confidently guide your patients through every stage of their GLP-1 journey.

We also dive into the surprising science of bitter foods – like dandelion, grapefruit, and dark chocolate – that naturally stimulate GLP-1 receptors, offering a food-first support strategy that complements medication.

Perhaps most crucial is the discussion on weight regain post-discontinuation, with studies showing 60–100% of lost weight can return within a year without lifestyle foundations. Robbie provides realistic, sustainable strategies to help patients move from medication reliance to long-term metabolic resilience.

Whether you’re currently supporting patients on GLP-1 medications or preparing for their growing use in practice, this episode delivers the clinical insights you need to turn short-term interventions into lasting lifestyle change

The Joy Connection with Jess Wilson 13 Jan 202200:39:18

Today we welcome back Jess Wilson, who's a functional nutritionist who feels that we all need a little more joy in our life.

In this episode, Jess talks about the joy hormone oxytocin, the impact of gut health on our mood, and shares some ideas on how to help our clients feel more joy.

About Jess Wilson:

Hi, I’m Jess, and this is me.

I believe the reason I was put on this planet is to inspire people to live a big, healthy, joyful life. Ever since I was little, I’ve been great at two things: doing hard stuff, and inspiring others. What I didn’t realise is that these two things would eventually become my destiny.

When my children were born I was faced with the hardest challenge of my life. They were sick – very sick – and at the hands of the medical system, I found myself in a four-year-long fight for their health that would very nearly break them (and me).

In the darkest of hours, with a fire of determination burning in my belly and my ever-present there’s-always-a-way attitude, I turned to the healing power of food to help us, and our world started to turn around.

I learned that the human body is capable of incredible things. I learned that taking responsibility for your health was the most powerful choice you could ever make. I learned that we are not invincible. That we do break. But that we can fix ourselves too.  I learned that leading with love and following your heart meant learning to love yourself, too.

And that on the other side of the struggle is a big, healthy, joyful life. Now, I get to inspire others. I’m on a mission to take my story global and to lift people up.

I’m a Functional Nutritionist, Gut Health and Hormone Practitioner and All-Round Wellness Coach. I’m also a busy mum, an ocean lover and a runner… who loves to live a vibrant life (usually flying by the seat of my pants.)

My job is to help you put yourself back together, to see you happy and healthy again, And to teach you that this one big happy life we have is worth living, in the healthiest way.

Let’s work together. I want to see you win.

Blending Science with Holistic Patient Care with Natasha Sidoti30 Dec 202100:37:41

Today we're joined by Natasha Sidoti, a naturopath who blends distinctive listening skills and body language cues with modern science to achieve a more telling patient case.

Natasha observes the pattern of languaging and phrasing from a client resulting in some vast clues to what is going on with your patient.

About Natasha:

After realising her cc debt was predominantly from health food stores, Tash decided to return for Uni once more and complete her Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy, leaving behind her original career path in Human Resources, Not for Profit work and Office Management.

Her adolescent years were spent in New Zealand, with a step-father who opened her eyes to organic farming and what it means to feel well from the inside out.

Now, Tash has a busy clinical practice in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and also loves speaking with health practitioners across Australia, providing technical support, training and GI-MAP guidance. The best of both worlds!

Over the years, Tash has become increasingly curious about the correlation between client language patterns, gut microbiome markers and digestive clinical symptoms.

This parallel linguistic interest compliments the Naturopathic framework to 'treat the whole person', with equal respect to both the verbal descriptives and functional testing biomarkers.

The more we truly listen to what is said, HOW it is phrased and what is UNsaid.... the more we can do for our patients.

Tash appreciates the nuanced detail one can gain from our unique microbes as much as the detail that can be gaged from client communication patterns.

Combining these observations is where the magic can really happen and longer-term, sustainable improvements are possible.

The Modern Naturopathic Model with Brett O'Brien 25 Nov 202100:36:51

Today we are chatting with Naturopath Brett O'Brien from Core Naturopathics, who, together with his business partner Darren Sassall, has created a groundbreaking naturopathic clinic allowing patients to experience a new and modern naturopathic model to healing.

The Core Naturopathic team has blended traditional naturopathic philosophy with modern tools including pulse electromagnetic field therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, infrared sauna, hyperthermia, and IV nutrition to offer a unique and contemporary naturopathic clinical model.

About Brett O'Brien
I have practised as a qualified naturopath for almost twenty years, and I am still excited by the
possibilities this career can offer. The constant that I am always most fascinated by is the people. I have always embraced a desire to engage with others. It can be as superficial as my time in sales or as deep as supporting someone at the end of life. The human capacity to communicate, connect and support each other can be extremely fulfilling.

As a Naturopath, trying to understand the human experience is so very complex. Still, I believe I am closer to understanding it through the philosophy of Naturopathy than any other health profession. I love that the body intrinsically understands what it feels like to be perfect, and its aim to return is based on hope, confidence, possibility and self-sustainability. I believe the role of the naturopath is then to provide a managed reconnection with this innate capacity. Our role is to identify and remove the roadblocks that inhibit the body from what it already knows. Our tools of the trade then provide a means of traction and momentum and a road map. It has taken nearly twenty years to know this.

As a Naturopath, you are constantly scrutinised about your effectiveness in a medicalised system. To rediscover a philosophy and confidently embrace a paradigm that has almost disappeared and build a business model around it has been a massive risk. But the amazing thing is, is that most people intrinsically know this paradigm and just need a road map to navigate by. Core Naturopathics returns to the ideals of the past but represents a very modern application. I believe naturopathy can be a modern, scientific and results-based wellness paradigm that supports people's capacity to heal and thrive. It also represents my vision to engage with others, experience the human condition and trail blaze through this new age of wellness.
