I do not consider myself a photographer who creates art, but rather an artist working in the medium of photography.

In photography I strive to create images that speak to wildness – the quality of being attuned to, and inspired by, the wild. I consider my work to be expressive art, in the sense that its primary purpose is to offer visual metaphors for thoughts and feelings, rather than to document appearances.

I work primarily in the landscape of my home, the high deserts of the Colorado Plateau. Over a period now spanning more than two decades, these places have become very meaningful to me; and my relationship with some of them has become as complex as any I have had with another human being. Rather than glimpses of the superficial beauty of the land, I wish instead for my work to speak to a deep familiarity with my subjects, revealing something of my reverence for them and the roles they play in my life. The things I photograph are not just attractive models to me; they are also temples and sanctuaries and multi-dimensional characters in my own story, as I am (surely to a lesser degree) in theirs.

I grew up in the UK loving nature and traveI. I remember my first camping trips in France and Switzerland as a child, and looking back it was probably those holidays that awoke the wanderlust in me. I left England in my mid 20s and since then have lived in various places before settling in Lisbon, Portugal.

A love of travelling has been a constant in my life, and a love of photography grew naturally out of that alongside a desire to capture the places I saw and the impression they made on me.  This was followed by writing blogs and contributing articles to magazines, which in turn led to leading workshops and combining photography with the skills from my previous career as a teacher. Since then my work has appeared in magazines all over the world, including Practical Photography, Digital Photographer, Australian Photography and National Geographic. I partner with international clients like Fujifilm, DJI, Capture One, F-Stop Gear and Squarespace, and lead workshops to some of the planet’s most beautiful spots.

My focus nowadays is on traveling, shooting landscapes and  teaching photography through workshops, film-making and writing.  I lead multiple workshops each year partnering with experienced local photographers and guides who know the areas we’re visiting. I am a freelance travel and nature photographer from Spain who has had the privilege of travelling around the world since 1998 collecting an extensive and hopefully strong set of images of people, places, wildlife and landscapes across more than ninety countries in all continents. It was during this first round the world trip, and particularly in India where I learned to watch and wait for life. All good photos start with a great journey, and journeys open the heart, the mind and the eyes. During this fourth trip to India I got really inspired and made the decision to pursue a career as a travel photographer and follow in the footsteps of three generations of photographers in my family. Since that trip, I have been drawn back to Asia again and again, lured by its people, architecture, temples, ceremonies, festivals, its colours and smells.

In 2016, I was also given the great honor of being announced as a Master of Photography by the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography).      Mike Moats is an international award-winning, professional macro photographer from Sterling Heights, Michigan. Mike’s love of photography, which started out as a hobby in 2001, has since evolved into a full-time business. In addition to creating his own images, Mike added “Close-up/Macro Photography” workshops into the mix in 2006, and he now also makes speaking appearances at photo conferences nationwide, leads intensive Macro Boot Camps around the country, and now has an online Macro Photo Club to assist photographers with their macro goals

Recruited as a member of the Fuji Pro Talent Team in 2006, Mike is also honored to be a Tamron “Image Master” and a Vanguard Pro. He has won numerous local, national, and international awards. Mike’s first book, Tiny Landscapes, was released in 2008, and his images and how-to articles have been published in various magazines, including Outdoor Photographer, Nature’s Best Photography, Shutterbug, PC Photo, Nature Photographer, Photo Life, Whisper in the Woods, and Michigan Fish and Game Finder; in photography collections such as the North American Nature Photography Association’s (NANPA’s) Expressions book and the Pure Michigan tourism companion; and in various corporate collateral, including on the Tamron USA blog and in Fujifilm newsletters.

Jack and John are pleased to welcome Chuck Kimmerle to our discussion.  Chuck is an amazing fine art black and white photographer with a unique and distinctive style honed from many years as a staff photographer for news papers.  Chuck recently transplanted to the Eastern Sierra area of California and is just starting to explore his new environment looking for unique and expressive images.

From Chucks Bio:

I am a fine art photographer working primarily in black and white. My work does not always fit within the usual categories. The landscape moniker, while the most accurate, evokes unfair and incorrect expectations of mountain panoramas at sunset or vistas with foregrounds of colorful flowers. Neither occupy much space in my collection. Instead, my photographs are stark, simple, quiet, personal, and often contain artificial objects. They are unique.

I now devote myself full-time to photographing the landscape in my unique, personal style. I prefer to photograph in areas devoid of obvious grandeur or explicit beauty, even if surrounded by such splendor. These are the areas I often think of as the “in betweens.” I prefer prairies to mountains, and the high desert to the slot canyons. I am most at comfortable, and at my most creative, in areas which are reticent, quiet, and open. The areas in between.
