Life on the road, with 62-year-old digital nomad Sandy26 Aug 202601:16:53

When Sandy was 21, she stepped into the road and was hit by a car. She learned super young that she could die in surgery, so after 9 major reconstructions and a year in a wheelchair, she promised herself, “ I’m going to live my life the way I want to live my life. I need to make choices that I love.”

Now 62, Sandy’s choices have brought her to life on the road, travelling across the US and Canada with her two poodles, her laptop, and… not much else! She’s shed her possessions, society’s expectations, and is now free to live a life that’s fully hers. Truly inspirational 😍

Sandy, 62 - "I Always Felt Real Women Were Over There, and I Was Over Here."29 Jul 202601:28:09

Sandy is living proof that there’s more than one way to be childfree! She used to struggle with ambivalence about having children, always feeling different to the other girls, but still feeling the same pressure to become a mother one day. After a lot of time and money spent on trying to get pregnant, it was in her late 30s that Sandy accepted and started to embrace a life without children.

That’s about the same time that a professor recognised Sandy’s community work in Montreal, and recommended her for a master’s program in social work - giving her a direction that has nothing to do with having children. She’s come out several times - as genderqueer, as pansexual, and childfree - and now lives in a platonic life partnership with a friend, and they care for each other and their ageing families 💞

This conversation reminds us that, no matter how complicated life can get, you can still find yourself, and the people and things that you care about. And that is enough.

Visit Sandy’s website to find out more about her and her work.

Are Childfree Women the New Witches?14 Jul 202601:15:35

Hag. Spinster. Crone. Childless cat lady 🐈‍⬛ The words have barely changed - and neither has the patriarchal playbook.

In this episode, we trace the threads between the women burned as witches and the childfree women demonised today: fear of females outside of men’s control, the suspicion of our time and money, the medical misogyny that came after midwives and still shows up in doctor’s offices to this day.

Join us as we get dark, summon the spirits of our long-dead sisters, and gather a coven of powerful childfree women ✨

Karen, 67 - “I Won’t Let Fear Stop Me”30 Jun 202601:25:24
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wearechildfree.substack.com

“Feel the fear and do it anyway” could be the motto of 67-year-old aussie legend Karen. She’s skydived despite her fear of heights, dived with sharks even though she didn't quite trusting the cowboys running the operation, and tried stand-up comedy - because of her terror of public speaking 💪

For Karen, being childfree has meant freedom. Freedom to leave her husband who thought she’d change her mind and only wanted to dim her (intense) light. Freedom to move on a whim, from Adelaide to Singapore, and then Hong Kong. And freedom to date men as young as her friend’s grown-up children ❤️

Karen has so many stories, we kept the juiciest ones for our Dolly Patrons. Subscribe now to hear about Karen’s trip to a brothel, how many children she had in a past life, and what she did on her honeymoon with the toast and the jam… 🍞

Whatever you wish for your childfree life, we hope this conversation inspires you to not let fear stand in your way!

The Motherhood Scam And Trad Wife Training16 Jun 202601:36:39

The alt right media is asking, "Why do the 'child-free' want EVERYBODY to devalue motherhood?", and warning women that "The Childfree Dream Is A Scam"... But who's selling who, and what are they peddling?

In this ep, we meet the two genders of modern conservative media, Blaze and Evie, and dive deep into their grift: tricking you into giving up on feminism and becoming a trad-wife-in-training. Their ultimate goal? The Motherhood Scam.

This one's so shocking, James' jogging pants flew off! (...the front of our camper van...) Listen in to find out the state of modern motherhood, why patriarchy wants to keep the truth from you - or at least make you shut the eff up about it - and how, as ever, childfree women are getting the blame 🤬

Rae, 72 - “Be Your Own Best Friend”02 Jun 202601:25:12

Rae is a legend! From birth, she’s always been very sure of who she is and what she wants, feeling a powerful sense of inner strength - an absolutely no maternal instinct 🙅‍♀️

Now 72, she was the baby of her family, but always treated like an adult, especially by her pharmacist father, who supplied her with the contraceptive pill among his other support. Rae seized the opportunity to create a life of her own, working behind the scenes in TV, training as a handwriting expert and now campaigning as an animal rights activist.

Rae has gathered around herself a feathered family, anchored by her husband Bob AKA Daddy Bird! And while theirs is a beautiful love story which will end in a graceful green burial, Rae’s sense of self holds strong. We completely co-sign these words of wisdom: “be your own best friend and be ready to be there when no one else might be”.

Birth Rate Panic! Not our problem.19 May 202601:27:03

Another week, another birth rate panic!

We recorded this ep before Dr Oz starting shrieking out about “under-babied” Americans, when the UK was freaking out about the death rate possibly exceeding the birth rate…

But guess what bro, the birth rate’s been falling for 50 years! It might be time to accept that and adapt - unless what you’re really worried about is being “replaced” by people who don’t look or live like you?

And even if you believe the birth rate is a problem to be solved, as childfree people, is it our problem? 📉💥

Judi, 68 - “I Feel Joyful Every Day”05 May 202601:03:12

Get curious with Judi, 68, who’s truly made the most of her freedom. Born an only child in a time and place when that was rare, she grew up in Los Angeles and spent summers with her countless cousins in Tennessee, having her eyes opened to different lifestyles and different choices from a young age.

Determined to make the most of opportunities her grandmothers never had, Judi started her own business - Mannequin Madness! - nurtured kids her own way as a mentor in a Big Sister programme, explored her spirituality as a Buddhist, travelled the world and now wants to learn Spanish and move south of the border.

Judi’s secret to feeling joyful every day? Practising gratitude, even in the hard times, and staying curious about the world. We hope this conversation brings a big smile to your face lovelies 😃

Does Having Kids Make You Happy?21 Apr 202601:07:25

We’re always warned we’ll end up unhappy if we don’t have children, but a recent study’s shown that parents are no happier than non-parents - and that’s SCIENCE! Cue the pronatalist backlash from self-proclaimed experts, including a bunch of dumb dads, claiming that what we’re really missing out on is meaning. But what’s the purpose of “Purpose” if it doesn’t make you, or anyone else, happy? Listen in to hear the parental happiness myth busted, how you don’t have to earn your place on the planet and why hedonism is a good thing, actually 🍾

Having children DOESN'T make you happy: Becoming a parent provides no boost to wellbeing, study claims – but it does ruin your relationship

Esther, 67 - "Every decade gets better!"07 Apr 202601:33:06

Meet Esther, 67, based in New Zealand. She's dedicated her life to teaching kids how to be curious and independent, and thinks of her students as her "lights in the world", her living legacy.

Esther's come a long way from being adopted in Germany, and raised by neglectful parents who sought - unsuccessfully - to control her. She's travelled the world, campaigned for Greenpeace, championed underprivileged kids... and she says that every decade of her life just gets better!

Hearing from childfree elders brings us so much hope and pride, and it's our pleasure to introduce you to the ever-inspiring Esther 💝

Gen Z Men are Not OK24 Mar 202601:29:25

A third of Gen Z men believe that a wife should always obey her husband. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! James takes us on a deep dive into young men’s attitudes about women, themselves and - most worryingly - gender equality. A survey that dropped on International Women’s Day shows how badly patriarchy drives men to hurt themselves, other men, and especially women. Listen in to hear Zoë get horrified about the state of the genders across generations, and maybe find a little bit of hope for the future 🙏

“Gen Z males twice as likely as baby boomers to believe wives should obey husbands“

Joan Smith in The Guardian: "As a boomer, I’m shocked by gen Z’s attitude towards women – something has gone very wrong"

This is a very special episode of the podcast! I interviewed Orna Donath, the author of Regretting Motherhood, for an exclusive We are Childfree member event, and our conversation was so full of inspiration and insight that I had to share a preview with you all.

Listen in to hear how…

🔥 Regret often comes from societal pressures, not from our own choices

🔥 Choosing not to have children can be a radical act

🔥 We’re not the first! We’re continuing the legacy of women who’ve chosen to live childfree for generations

Putting my life first, with Natasha den Dekker17 Oct 202300:57:44

Natasha is a British-Asian woman who was born with a bicornate uterus, who found out at 21 that carrying a child to term would be very difficult and dangerous.

This helped Natasha make a careful, considered choice about being childfree, but it was the final disappointment for her traditional Hindu parents who she’s now cut out of her life.

This was an eye-opening conversation about growing up in England as someone of South Asian heritage, being “not brown enough” for some people, and breaking free of your family’s rigid expectations to create a lovely childfree life for yourself.

Read Natasha’s story on We are Childfree: “It was very much a decision thrust upon me at a really young age so it’s probably why I’ve thought about it more than my peers.”

Childfree was chosen for me, with Sari Botton23 May 202300:45:22

Author Sari Botton calls her hysterectomy the best thing that ever happened to her, a true blessing. An older Gen Xer, she never felt entitled to choose not to be a mother, and at 40, found herself in a fertility clinic getting a diagnosis that gave her “permission” to live a happily childfree life. Sari has such a unique perspective, and it was amazing getting to talk about embracing a choice that was chosen for you, and the forces that want to strip us of our choices.

Check out Oldster Magazine, Sari’s incredible newsletter which explores what it means to travel through time in a human body, at every phase of life.

Getting vulnerable, with Xander Marin09 May 202300:43:35

The first man we’ve ever had on the pod! We’ve had a lot of requests to hear from couples about how they navigate the childfree choice together, so we reached out to Xander, husband and business partner of sex therapist Vanessa Marin. The couple opened up on their Pillow Talks podcast about their decision not to have children, in what proved to be their most popular episode ever!

Xander told us how they arrived at their choice, and when they did, how this “domino belief” gave them permission to create a life together that truly fulfils them. It was great to hear from a man about how his experience differs from his wife’s, how they’ve coped with their families’ expectations, and how they counsel parents about their relationships and sex lives.

Life just gets better and better, with Cindy Gallop25 Apr 202300:30:13

Cindy Gallop is the older childfree role model we all need! She calls herself the “Michael Bay of business” because she likes to blow s**t up - most famously as the founder of the revolutionary social sex platform MakeLoveNotPorn.

Cindy never wanted children, adores being single, dates younger men casually and recreationally for sex, and doesn’t give a damn what anyone else thinks! She’s become an icon for Gen Z on TikTok, who can now say “I have seen my future and it is bright.” Join us for a pep talk about being unapologetically yourself and designing your own life, a life that gets better and better!

Dreaming of utopia, with Laura Zalenga11 Oct 202200:47:08

Like a lot of artists, portrait photographer Laura Zalenga is a dreamer. She imagines a future when generations live together, so the older people she met during her "Beauty of Age" project feel useful, and younger folks can benefit from their experience and wisdom. In this utopia, childfree people and parents support each other, and everyone has access to the education and choices that allow them to live the life that's right for them. What a wonderful world that would be! This was a super inspiring conversation with a fellow photographer who reminded me of the power of art to change how people think, how they live.

Create a life together, with Melanie Hunter27 Sep 202200:25:31

It can be hard trying to decide if you want children or not, and it can be doubly difficult when there are two people involved in the decision. That’s why I wanted to speak to today’s guest, Melanie Hunter, who went with her husband to couple’s therapy, specifically to unpack the question: should they have kids? It was fascinating to hear about how they made an intentional choice to be childfree, and heeded their therapists’ advice that, if you’re not going to make a baby, you should create something else together: a purpose, a life.

We're just humans with hormones, with Emma Hollen30 Aug 202200:56:19

I invited Emma Hollen onto the pod because of a super-entertaining Twitter thread about her struggle to get a tubal ligation, and her eventual success, at age 30. As a pansexual, non-binary person, Emma doesn't feel that she fits the narrow definition of "woman" that society would force her into. And, as a science journalist, she taught me a lot about the diversity of the natural world, our place in the universe, and our chemical urge to procreate - which is distinct and different from some people's desire to have and raise a child.

Read the Twitter thread that tells the story of Emma's sterilisation... with GIFs!

Unfertilized eggs, with Jerra Latrice Mitchell16 Aug 202200:32:36

Jerra Latrice Mitchell is such an inspiration! She knew she was a teenager that she didn’t want kids, but later when she was diagnosed with fibroids and learned she couldn’t get pregnant, that brought up some big emotions that she needed to work through. Recognising that black women face different expectations around motherhood, and different experiences of infertility, Jerra created a space for other childfree and childless women called Unfertilized Eggs. I loved getting a fresh perspective on life without children, from someone who’s doing incredible work in this space.

Finding Acceptance, with Anna Brooke02 Aug 202200:47:08

Anna Brooke was born with a health issue which means that pregnancy and childbirth could be very dangerous for both herself and the child. Over time, she came to accept that she wouldn’t be able to have biological kids of her own. So instead of becoming a mother to the teen daughter she used to write to in her diary, Anna now works as a high school teacher. She’s showing her students that there are other ways to live. I’m so happy to be able to complicate the narrative around people without children, and super grateful to Anna for being so open, honest and vulnerable about her childfree journey.

Go for your dreams, with Jenny Castano19 Jul 202200:37:54

For Jenny Castano, being childfree is so much more than a lifestyle choice - it’s meant having the freedom to create the life she’d always dreamed about. When she moved from Colombia to Queens, New York, as a teenager, Jenny already knew that she wanted to learn English, go to college, find a profession and travel the world. Check, check, check - she’s done all that! Even though she’s too modest to admit it, Jenny is a real trailblazer helping to make the world a better place.

Totally Tubular with Caitlin Durante05 Jul 202201:06:36

We are Childfree is back for season 2 with one of my dream guests! Caitlin Durante is an LA-based comedian and co-host of the Bechdel Cast, which takes a look at movies through an intersectional feminist lens. I spoke to Caitlin a year after her tubal ligation, in the run up to what she’s calling “raw dog summer part 2”! We shared our experiences getting permanent birth control, the hoops we had to jump through and the dumb comments we heard from doctors, nurses, and random dudes. Join us for a lolsob as we dive deep into a convo about feminism, film, fertility and f*****g the patriarchy 🔥

Follow @caitlindurante on Twitter, and read this amazing thread about her tubal ligation. Listen to the Bechdel Cast and Caitlin’s solo podcast, Sludge: An American Healthcare Story, starting with this episode which compares a man and woman’s experience getting permanent birth control.

If you’re seeking permanent birth control, the childfree subreddit has a couple of useful resources: a list of childfree-friendly doctors all over the world, and a sterilisation wiki full of information and resources.
