In this cross-over episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace and Dig Deeper, Prina Shah sits down with leadership expert Digby Scott for a deeply reflective conversation on legacy, energy management, and what it truly means to lead with intention.

Connect with Digby!

What starts as a shared connection through a former mentor quickly evolves into a rich discussion on impact - not as something distant or end-of-career, but something we shape daily through our decisions, behaviours, and leadership.

Together, Prina and Digby unpack the hidden drivers behind fulfilment at work, the gap many high-performing leaders feel, and the practical ways we can shift from reactive, overloaded working to intentional, meaningful contribution.

In This Episode, We Discuss

  • Why “legacy” isn’t about the end of your career - it’s about everyday decisions
  • The hidden “gap” many high-performing leaders feel (and why it exists)
  • Moving from ambition to meaning in your work
  • How your “North Star” shapes better decision-making
  • Energy management vs time management - and why it matters
  • Practical ways to stay present in back-to-back workdays
  • The risk of over-dependence on leaders (and how to break it)
  • Why many leaders become bottlenecks (ego, systems, and structure)
  • Creating self-sufficient, high-performing teams

172. Tiny Culture Change - Celebrate Growth Before Results with Prina Shah22 May 202600:01:59

In this short but powerful episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah explores why workplaces often celebrate outcomes while overlooking the growth that made those outcomes possible.

Results matter - but they are usually lag indicators. If leaders only recognise the final achievement, people quickly learn that effort, learning, experimentation, and progress do not count unless they produce immediate success.

Prina shares a practical culture shift leaders can implement this week: recognising how people are improving, not just what they have achieved.

This episode highlights how acknowledging behavioural shifts, emotional regulation, learning, and progress creates psychologically safer workplaces where people feel more confident to experiment, take smart risks, and continue developing.

In this episode, Prina explores:

  • Why results are lagging indicators
  • The hidden risk of only rewarding outcomes
  • How recognition shapes workplace behaviour
  • Practical examples of recognising growth in real time
  • The connection between growth recognition and psychological safety
  • Why learning cultures outperform fear cultures
  • Small leadership behaviours that create long-term culture change

Key Takeaway

When leaders celebrate growth, not just outcomes, people become more willing to learn, adapt, and contribute openly.

Recognition is not only about achievement.
 It is also about progress.

171. Trusting Your Gut More - On Intuition - with Dr Vish Ramakonar and Prina Shah15 May 202600:28:26

In this episode of Ways to Change The Workplace, Prina Shah is joined by Dr Vish Ramakonar for a fascinating and thought-provoking conversation on something many leaders feel - but rarely trust enough:

Your gut instinct.

This episode steps outside traditional workplace conversations and dives into the intersection of intuition, neuroscience, leadership, and decision-making.

If you’ve ever thought “I knew that was the right call… why didn’t I trust myself?” — this one is for you.

Connect with Dr Vish and Resources Mentioned

What This Episode Explores

Prina and Vish unpack the science and practicality behind intuition, including:

  • Why so many high-performing leaders regret not trusting their gut
  • The neuroscience behind intuition and decision-making
  • The role of the heart (yes, the heart) in influencing brain function
  • What “coherence” and “homeostasis” actually mean—and why they matter
  • How stress, fear, and overwhelm distort your thinking
  • The difference between intuition and fear-based reactions
  • Why workplaces often discourage intuitive decision-making
  • How to balance gut instinct with data and evidence
  • Practical tools to access clearer thinking and better decisions

Key Insight

“The brain thinks, but the heart knows.” Research from the HeartMath Institute shows that:

  • The heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart
  • When you’re calm, grateful, and centred → your brain performs better
  • When you’re stressed or reactive → your thinking becomes impaired

Your body may know before your mind catches up.

Types of Intuition

Vish breaks intuition into three types:

  1. Implicit Intuition
Learned patterns from past experience (e.g. a nurse sensing something is wrong)
  2. Energetic Intuition
Sensitivity to environmental signals (e.g. animals before natural disasters)
  3. Non-Local Intuition
Deep, unexplainable knowing (e.g. sensing something is wrong with a loved one)

If you’ve ever felt like change is harder than it should be, this episode explains why- and what to do differently.

In This Episode, We Discuss

  • Why change is now BAU (business as usual)
  • The impact of AI, technology, and shifting workforce expectations
  • The evolving psychological contract between employees and employers

Rethinking Change: Leadership, Trust & the Reality of Constant Transformation

Rethink Change Conference 2026

More about The Rethink Change Founders Doug Wolfson and Janine Ellison

In this episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah is joined by Doug Wolfson and Janine Ellison, founders of Rethink Change - a conference and community built to bring change practitioners together.

What started as a post-lockdown idea over a glass of wine has grown into a thriving ecosystem of learning, connection, and real-world change insights.

This conversation dives deep into why change feels heavier than ever, the emotional realities behind it, and what organisations consistently get wrong -especially after go-live.

From leadership alignment to human-centred design, from psychological safety to the relentless pace of transformation, this episode is a must-listen for anyone working in or leading change.

In This Episode, We Discuss:

  • The origin story of Rethink Change and why community matters more than ever
  • How COVID reshaped change - and why hybrid is here to stay
  • The evolving themes in change:
     → Psychological safety
     → Psychosocial risk
     → AI
→ The relentless volume of change
  • Why change is an emotional trigger, not just a business process
  • The real reason people resist change (hint: it’s fear and uncertainty)
  • Why change managers must be involved early - not as a tick-box
  • The tension (and partnership) between project managers vs change managers
  • Why go-live is NOT the finish line
  • The hidden failure: poor expectation management, not failed change
  • The importance of leader-led change and authentic belief
  • Human-centred design and why most organisations still get it wrong
  • The impact of poorly managed change on trust and future initiatives

167. Tiny Culture Change - Stop Outsourcing Feedback: The Leadership Contract No One Talks About with Prina Shah17 Apr 202600:02:10

In this short, sharp culture drop, Prina Shah challenges a common leadership habit that quietly erodes trust: outsourcing feedback.

When leaders avoid difficult conversations and pass them to HR or others, they send two unintended messages — I can’t handle hard things and you can’t trust me.

This episode is a direct call to action:
If you lead people, giving feedback is not optional. It’s the job.

Prina breaks down a simple, practical way to approach feedback conversations with clarity, ownership, and respect — without overcomplicating it or hiding behind process.

Practical Framework Shared

When something is off, keep it simple:

  • Here’s what I’m seeing
  • Here’s the impact
  • Here’s what needs to change
  • Then pause… and listen

Reflection Question

  • Where are you avoiding a conversation you know you need to have?
  • And what message is that avoidance sending to your team?

166. Small Town Business: When the Boss Is the Culture with Simone Pickering and Prina Shah10 Apr 202600:18:08

In this episode, I’m joined again by Simone Pickering, HR consultant and founder of The People & Culture Office, to unpack a reality many small town businesses don’t want to admit:

Sometimes the culture is the business owner.

And in regional and small town settings, that impact is even stronger.

We explore what happens when leadership style, personality, and long-standing habits define the entire workplace culture — and why this often leads to stagnation, turnover, and growth ceilings.

This is a conversation about self-awareness, hard truths, and what it really takes to shift culture when it’s deeply personal.

In This Episode, We Discuss

  • Why culture in small towns is often shaped by one dominant leader
  • What happens when businesses don’t evolve beyond the founder
  • The connection between leadership personality and employee experience
  • Why employees leave (and it’s not always about money)
  • The defensiveness that blocks culture change
  • Why compliance and policies don’t fix retention
  • The myth of perks (bonuses, trips) as engagement strategies
  • The gap between leadership perception vs employee reality
  • Why many small businesses stall at 10–15 employees
  • Why culture only becomes a priority when business conditions change

About the Guest: Simone Pickering - Founder, The People & Culture Office

Simone is a Kalgoorlie-based HR consultant working with businesses across regional WA. She helps leaders build practical, human-centred cultures that support retention, performance, and long-term success.

165. The Quiet Cost of Intellectual Loneliness at Work with Prina Shah03 Apr 202600:17:40

In this episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, I explore something that a lot of people feel… but very few people actually name.

Intellectual loneliness.

It’s not about being socially isolated.
It’s about being surrounded by people, yet rarely having conversations that stretch your thinking.

The kind of conversations where ideas are explored, challenged, expanded.

Instead, many workplaces unintentionally reward speed, certainty, and simplicity - and over time, deeper thinking starts to disappear.

In this episode, I unpack what intellectual loneliness really is, how it shows up at work, and why it matters more than we think - especially in the age of AI.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • What intellectual loneliness actually means (and why it’s not about being alone)
  • The subtle ways it shows up in meetings and everyday work
  • Why workplaces reward certainty over curiosity
  • How people slowly start holding back their thinking
  • The growing role of AI as a “thinking partner”
  • The risk of replacing human dialogue with technology
  • Why meaningful work is deeply connected to being heard
  • The hidden cost to culture, innovation, and decision-making
  • What leaders can do to bring better thinking back into the room

Key reflection questions:

  • When was the last time you had a conversation at work that genuinely stretched your thinking?
  • Do people in your workplace explore ideas — or defend positions?
  • Where might people be holding back their thinking?
  • Are you creating space for curiosity… or rushing to answers?

163. Tiny Culture Change - Kill 1 Stupid Rule - with Prina Shah27 Mar 202600:02:13

In this short episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah explores a simple but powerful leadership action: removing one pointless rule from your organisation.

Every workplace has them - outdated policies, unnecessary approvals, or processes that exist simply because “that’s how it’s always been done.” While they may seem harmless, these rules quietly send a dangerous message: that bureaucracy matters more than common sense.

Prina explains how eliminating even one unnecessary rule can spark trust, ownership, and initiative within teams. Culture doesn’t change through posters or slogans - it changes when leaders actively remove barriers that make work harder than it needs to be.

If you’re serious about improving culture, start small. Start practical. Start by killing one stupid rule.

In This Episode

Prina explores:

  • Why every organisation has at least one pointless rule
  • How unnecessary processes slowly kill initiative
  • The hidden message bureaucracy sends to employees
  • Why culture change happens through action, not posters
  • A simple leadership exercise to identify and remove one rule
  • How removing friction builds trust and momentum

A Simple Leadership Challenge

Ask your team one question this week:

“If you could kill one rule or process that makes your job harder for no reason — what would it be?”

Then:

  1. Choose one genuinely low-risk rule
  2. Remove it
  3. Tell your team what you removed and why
  4. Invite the next suggestion

Small actions like this build cultures of trust, ownership, and common sense.

Key Insight

Culture isn’t changed by statements on the wall.

It changes when leaders remove the small, unnecessary things that make work harder than it needs to be.

Reflection Question

What is one rule or process in your workplace that everyone rolls their eyes at — but nobody has challenged?

164. Breaking the Silence – Understanding Coercive Control with CEO of the Domestic Abuse Resource and Training Group (DART Group), Jolene Ellat and Prina Shah20 Mar 202600:43:25

Coercive control is one of the most misunderstood forms of abuse.

It rarely begins with obvious violence. Instead, it often starts subtly — through behaviours that slowly isolate, manipulate, and erode a person's confidence and independence.

In this powerful episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah is joined by Joelene Ellat, CEO and Founder of the Domestic Abuse Resource and Training Institute (DART Institute).

Jolene's the CEO of the Domestic Abuse Resource and Training Group (DART Group)

Jolene's LinkedIn

Joelene brings deep expertise in domestic and family violence and explains how coercive control operates as a pattern of behaviours designed to gain power and control within a relationship.

Together, they unpack how these behaviours show up in everyday life — and importantly, how they show up in workplaces.

Because family violence does not stay behind closed doors.
It affects workplaces, colleagues, leaders, and organisational culture.

This episode explores the warning signs of coercive control, including love bombing, gaslighting, financial abuse, isolation, and monitoring behaviours, and provides practical guidance on how workplaces can recognise and respond to these situations safely.

This conversation is confronting, complex, and deeply important.

161. Is Your Development at Work Arrested?06 Mar 202600:13:40

In this solo episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah explores a powerful and uncomfortable question:

Is your professional development at work arrested?

Using the metaphor of “Arrested Development” (inspired by the band), Prina unpacks what happens when growth stalls, motivation dips, and learning quietly stops. She challenges listeners to reflect on whether they are truly evolving — or simply repeating.

This episode dives into the warning signs of stagnation, the long-term risks of staying comfortable, and the practical steps you can take to reignite your growth.

Because in today’s fast-changing world, standing still is not neutral — it’s risky.

In This Episode, Prina Explores:

  • What “arrested development” really means in a workplace context
  • The difference between comfort and complacency
  • Three common archetypes:
    • The Static Performer
    • The Overlooked Talent
    • The Contented Settler
  • Why skill obsolescence is more dangerous than you think
  • The long-term impact of stagnation on motivation, satisfaction, and career mobility
  • The organisational cost of disengaged, underdeveloped employees
  • How to take ownership of your growth (even in a stale culture)
  • Practical actions to reignite learning and momentum

Reflection Questions

  • Have I stopped stretching myself professionally?
  • Where has my growth quietly plateaued?
  • Am I waiting to be developed — or actively developing myself?
  • What skills might I be neglecting that future me will need?
  • If nothing changed in my role for the next two years, how would I feel?

Practical Steps to Break Free from Stagnation

✔ Seek honest feedback
✔ Set personal development goals (even if your workplace doesn’t)
✔ Pursue learning opportunities internally and externally
 ✔ Volunteer for stretch assignments
 ✔ Network intentionally
✔ Track and document your achievements
✔ Allocate protected time for growth
 ✔ Cultivate resilience and curiosity

Growth is not accidental. It is intentional.

160. Kick Imposter Syndrome In the Nuts with Prina Shah27 Feb 202600:13:03

In this solo episode of The Ways To Change Your Workplace Podcast, Prina Shah deep dives into imposter syndrome – what it really is, why it shows up regardless of success, and how it quietly sabotages confidence, wellbeing, and career growth.

Drawing on psychology, lived experience, coaching stories, and insights from Adam Grant, Prina reframes imposter syndrome as data, not a verdict. This episode is a grounded, no-BS exploration of self-doubt, perfectionism, burnout, and the inner critic – with practical strategies to stop letting that voice run the show.

If you’ve ever thought “when are they going to find me out?” despite evidence you’re capable, this episode is for you.

In this episode, Prina explores

  • What imposter syndrome actually is (and where the term came from)
  • Why imposter syndrome affects high achievers across all industries
  • Common symptoms: anxiety, self-doubt, stress, and perfectionism
  • The emotional and career cost of living with imposter syndrome
  • How imposter syndrome fuels burnout and stagnation
  • Adam Grant’s reframe: imposter thoughts as information, not proof
  • Why self-doubt can be healthier than delusion (in small doses)
  • The power of “I don’t know yet”
  • A real coaching story about naming the imposter voice (hello, Sybil)
  • Practical strategies to manage imposter syndrome day to day
  • The role workplaces play in creating or reducing imposter syndrome

Reflection questions for listeners

  • Where does imposter syndrome show up for you most strongly?
  • What opportunities have you avoided because of self-doubt?
  • Which voice do you trust more – your inner critic or the people who see your strengths?

159. Why We Resist Change (and What Leaders Can Do About It) with Dr Vish Ramakonar21 Feb 202600:39:17

Dr Vish Ramakonar is a change and neuroscience practitioner, academic and corporate trainer with a background in engineering, IT and project management. He lectures at Edith Cowan University and delivers evidence-based programs grounded in neuroscience to support organisational change, resilience, wellbeing and performance.

Vish is passionate about helping organisations create environments where people can adapt, innovate and thrive – not just survive.

In this episode of Ways to Change Your Workplace, Prina Shah is joined by Dr Vish Ramakonar for a deep, practical conversation about why humans resist change – and what leaders can actually do about it.

Vish brings together engineering, project management, change management, neuroscience and teaching to unpack what is really happening in our brains and bodies when change is introduced at work. This is not a surface-level change conversation. It goes beneath behaviours and into survival responses, habits, emotions and identity.

Together, Prina and Vish explore why change often feels exhausting, why resistance is not stubbornness, and how leaders can create the psychological safety required for people to genuinely adapt and embed new ways of working.

This episode is especially relevant for leaders navigating constant organisational change, technology transformations, restructures, or culture shifts.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Why humans are biologically wired to resist change
 • How the fight-or-flight response shows up at work
 • The link between past experiences, emotions and resistance
 • Why change takes more energy than we expect

 • Why constant change without recovery leads to overwhelm
 • The difference between external change and internal transition
 • Why people move through change at different speeds
 • The neuroscience behind embedding new behaviours
 • The cost of rushing change without support

158. Living in a Fishbowl: Being the CEO in a Small Town with Simone Pickering13 Feb 202600:16:46

What happens when leadership doesn’t end at the office door?

In Living in a Fishbowl, Prina Shah is joined by regional HR expert Simone Pickering to explore what it really means to be a CEO in a small town — where anonymity doesn’t exist, visibility is constant, and leadership follows you to the supermarket, the school gate, and community events.

This episode moves beyond leadership theory and into lived experience. It unpacks the emotional load of being both an organisational leader and a public figure, the isolation that often comes with senior roles in small communities, and why boundaries, wellbeing, and support systems are not optional for sustainable leadership.

From local government CEOs and not-for-profit leaders to boards and councillors, this is an honest conversation about responsibility, burnout, and compassion — for leaders and for the humans behind the titles.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why CEOs in small towns are never “off duty”
  • Leadership visibility and being constantly observed
  • How small actions are magnified and misinterpreted
  • CEOs as public figures, not just organisational leaders
  • Decision-making when social consequences are unavoidable
  • The emotional isolation of senior leadership roles
  • Confidentiality challenges in tight-knit communities
  • Why some CEOs need to physically leave town to recover
  • Burnout risks in regional and not-for-profit leadership
  • The hidden cost of networking, stakeholder events, and “being on”
  • Why purpose-driven leaders are at higher risk of burnout
  • The critical role of boards and councils in shaping culture
  • Two questions every board must ask:

    • What does it feel like to work here?
    • How does our conduct impact organisational culture?

About Simone Pickering. Simone is a Kalgoorlie local and the founder of The People & Culture Office, a consultancy she launched in 2018 to make HR practical, human, and accessible for regional businesses.

 • How dominant voices shape meetings - especially in virtual environments
 • The cultural assumptions behind how meetings are run and voices are valued
 • Why communication is more than speaking - it requires listening and processing

155. Fear, Trust and the Cost of Playing It Safe at Work – A Real Conversation with Prina Shah and Trina Sunday23 Jan 202600:51:46

Fear is quietly running many workplaces. It hides behind process, compliance, and so-called safety. In this episode, Prina Shah is joined by Trina Sunday, founder of Reimagine HR, for a candid and deeply practical conversation about fear, trust, leadership, and the human cost of risk avoidance at work.

Together, they unpack how fear shows up in leadership behaviours, why HR is often stuck in the middle, and how systems, not people, are frequently the real problem. This is an honest conversation about courage, accountability, and what it really means to lead with heart, not fear.

If you work in HR, lead people, or feel stuck in a system that values process over humanity, this episode will resonate.

What we cover:

  • Why fear and trust sit at opposite ends of the employee experience
  • How fear shows up as control, perfectionism, indecision and micromanagement
  • The rise of compliance over courage in leadership
  • Why avoidance is being mistaken for safety
  • The capability gap in having difficult, human conversations
  • How performance systems and structures reinforce fear-based behaviour
  • Why restructures often treat symptoms, not root causes
  • The problem with two-week “consultation periods”
  • HR’s responsibility to influence, not retreat
  • The cost of neutrality when humanity is required
  • Rebuilding trust through micro moments, not grand gestures
  • Why clarity, consistency and empathy matter more than policies
  • False agreement, the HIPPO effect, and why silence is dangerous
  • Legacy as a daily choice, not an end-of-career concept
  • Moving from passenger to driver in your career
  • Trauma, poly-crisis, and the emotional reality people bring to work
  • Why courage does not come from workshops but from daily choices

About the Guest – Trina Sunday:
Trina Sunday is the founder of Reimagine HR and a fierce advocate for transforming the HR profession. Her work focuses on empowering HR leaders to be courageous change makers who lead with confidence, clarity, and humanity. Trina believes that changing HR is how we ultimately change workplaces and communities.

154. The Polycrisis at Work: Why Organisations Can’t Separate ‘Outside’ and ‘Inside’ Anymore16 Jan 202600:16:41

Work feels heavier.
People feel more stretched.
And even when organisations are performing well on paper, something feels off.

In this solo episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, Prina Shah explores the concept of a polycrisis and what it really means for leaders, organisations, and workplace culture.

A polycrisis is not just multiple crises happening at once. It is when economic pressure, social tension, climate anxiety, political instability, and constant change collide and amplify each other. And work sits right at the centre of that collision.

In this episode, Prina unpacks why organisations can no longer separate what happens outside the workplace from what happens inside, and why wellbeing initiatives alone will never be enough.

This is a practical, systems-focused conversation about how leadership behaviour, organisational design, and culture must change if work is going to remain meaningful in complex times.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn

• What a polycrisis is and why it matters at work
 • Why the boundary between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’ has collapsed
 • How workplace systems can either absorb or amplify pressure
 • Why counselling and wellbeing initiatives are necessary but not sufficient
 • What leaders need to do differently under sustained complexity
 • What organisations need to redesign to stop quietly breaking people
 • How meaningful work becomes a stabilising force in uncertain times

Key Topics Covered

• The polycrisis explained in practical, workplace terms
 • Why work is where pressure converges
 • The outside-inside loop and its impact on people, families, and communities
 • Leadership behaviour under pressure
 • Organisational systems, workload, and role clarity
 • Change without recovery and why it erodes trust
 • Designing work for sustainability rather than endurance

The polycrisis is not temporary.

What happens outside will keep coming inside.
And what happens inside will keep going back out.

The responsibility is not to fix everything.
It is to stop making it worse.

153. When Work Follows You To the Shops: Boundaries In Small Towns with Simone Pickering and Prina Shah09 Jan 202600:28:16

In this episode of Ways to Change the Workplace, Prina Shah is joined by Simone Pickering as part of the series Rethinking Regional Workplaces with Simone Pickering.

In When Work Follows You to The Shops, they explore what boundaries really look like when you live and work in a regional community or small town – where colleagues are neighbours, clients are parents at the school gate, and confidentiality is constantly tested.

This conversation moves beyond theory and into lived experience. It unpacks the emotional load of being “always on”, the complexity of dual relationships, and why boundary-setting in small towns is often misunderstood as being difficult rather than responsible.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why boundaries feel different in regional communities
  • Dual relationships and blurred personal-professional lines
  • Being approached about work everywhere
  • Confidentiality and trust in small ecosystems
  • Digital and after-hours boundaries
  • Boundary-setting as leadership behaviour

Reflection questions

  • Where has work quietly followed you into your personal life?
  • Which boundaries have become blurred because “that’s just how it is here”?
  • What would change if boundaries were treated as leadership, not attitude?

Simone Pickering is a Kalgoorlie local and the founder of The People & Culture Office, a consultancy she launched in 2018 to make HR easier for regional businesses. Her career began in local government before she spent almost a decade in the mining industry, later stepping into the not-for-profit sector where the human impact of good HR became impossible to ignore. Today, Simone partners with organisations across regional WA, helping leaders strengthen culture, lift capability and build workplaces people actually want to be part of. With deep experience, a human-centred approach and a clear lens on the reality of small-town workplaces, she brings insight, honesty and a steady hand to conversations about work in the regions.

150. Why I do what I do + announcing a break with Prina Shah12 Nov 202400:23:00

This is a retro ep. with an announcement that I am taking a break from podcasting as I am getting burned out. I need a break. I will return in 2025.

For now, hear my origin story...

Trigger warning for anyone affected by alcoholism or domestic violence.

My story is one I haven't told many.

Michelle, my client, asked me why I do what I do a while ago.

She wanted to know what motivates me to work with organisations to develop their people, teams and cultures.

I gave her the most generic response because I didn't know how to articulate my story.

My story begins with finding my Poppa's (Dad's) dead body in January 2000.

My life has never been the same since.

That event has impacted the way I live, work and love.

Tune in to this episode to find out more about why I do what I do.

In this episode, Prina Shah dives into the topic of office gossip—what it is, how it harms workplace culture, and most importantly, how to manage it. Prina shares two powerful quotes to frame the conversation: "Those who gossip to you, gossip about you" and "Loose lips sink ships." She highlights why gossip can be detrimental and provides a three-step framework to evaluate whether or not you should engage in a conversation that may be gossip:

143. How to Lead the Room as a CEO27 Sep 202400:11:16

Prina delves into one of the most crucial, yet often misunderstood, skills for any CEO: how to lead the room with presence and purpose.

Prina breaks down actionable, practical strategies to help you, as a CEO or executive, own the room—not because of your title, but through intentional actions, thoughtful pauses, and inspiring leadership. These are not just theoretical ideas; they’re techniques Prina has successfully used in her work with top executive teams.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Enter Like You Belong There:
    • Command attention with purpose, pausing as you enter to set the tone for the room without arrogance.
  2. Lead With Questions, Not Answers:
    • Avoid the "Hippo Effect" and shift the focus to the collective intelligence of the room. Ask thought-provoking, open-ended questions that challenge assumptions.
  3. Own Your Silences:
    • Silence is a powerful tool that forces deep thinking and enhances the impact of your words. Practice waiting before speaking again to give people the space they need to contribute meaningfully.
  4. Use Stories to Control the Narrative:
    • People remember stories, not data. Craft compelling narratives to illustrate your vision and inspire your team.
  5. Take the Room's Pulse, Then Set the Tone:
    • As a CEO, you’re not just reacting to the room—you control the atmosphere. Whether calming or energising, lead like a thermostat, not a thermometer.
  6. Leave Before You’re Done:
    • Whenever possible, conclude while the energy is high, leaving the room wanting more. This empowers your team to take ownership and continue without your constant presence.

Why This Matters:

If you don’t learn how to lead the room, the room will lead you. You risk losing control of the conversation, decision-making processes, and, ultimately, your organisation’s direction. But if you master these techniques, you’ll not only inspire loyalty and engagement but also create a culture of innovation and strategic thinking that cascades down through every level of your business.

Get In Touch:

If you’re a CEO or executive looking to elevate your leadership and bring your team to new heights, Prina is here to help. These techniques aren’t just theoretical—they’re proven strategies that will transform the way your team responds to your leadership.

Reach out to Prina to develop your executive team into a high-performance, cohesive unit that drives results and creates a legacy. You’ve already got the title—now it’s time to own the room. Find all the details below.

In this insightful episode of the Ways to Change the Workplace podcast, host Prina Shah welcomes back Aadil Abbas, financial planner and co-owner of Own Financial Planning in Sydney. Together, they tackle one of the most significant life events – family planning – and its impact on careers, finances, and emotional well-being.

Adil shares practical financial tips for navigating the costs of starting and raising a family, including budgeting for planned and unplanned expenses, stress-testing your lifestyle on a single income, and understanding the financial implications of reduced income. He also discusses the importance of investment structures like bonds and the value of family support in managing childcare costs.

127. 5 Ways You Are Killing Your Culture08 Jun 202400:12:03

Today, we tackle a crucial topic that may be uncomfortable but essential for creating a thriving work environment - the five ways you might be unintentionally killing your workplace culture.

  1. Micromanagement: We discuss how micromanagement, although seemingly ensuring correctness, can stifle team spirit and erode trust and autonomy. Drawing on sociologist Max Weber's theory of bureaucracy and Patrick Lencioni's concept of trust, we emphasize the importance of empowering teams and fostering trust through autonomy.
  2. Lack of Transparency: We highlight the negative impact of a lack of transparency on creating a culture of uncertainty and mistrust. Referencing David Rock's SCARF model and the Fair Process Effect, we stress the significance of transparency in building fairness and inclusivity within the workplace.
  3. Ignoring Employee Feedback: We explore the consequences of ignoring employee feedback, emphasizing the importance of creating a participative culture where employees feel valued and heard. Drawing on Kurt Lewin's change management model and the Hawthorne studies, we underscore the value of feedback loops for continuous improvement and employee satisfaction.
  4. Promoting the Wrong People: We discuss the detrimental effects of promoting individuals based solely on tenure rather than merit and alignment with company values. Referencing the Peter Principle and Jim Collins' concept of getting the right people on the bus, we advocate for promoting individuals who not only perform well but also champion the organization's culture and values.
  5. Overemphasis on Short-Term Results: We address the risks of prioritizing short-term gains over long-term culture sustainability. Drawing on the collapse of Enron as a case study, we emphasize the importance of balancing short-term results with long-term goals and nurturing team well-being and growth.

It's never too late to course correct and make intentional changes to enhance your workplace culture. 125. Are You a Culprit of Destination Addiction? With Prina Shah24 May 202400:01:59

Are you a culprit of Destination Addiction?

I wanna talk to you about a concept called destination addiction, and destination addiction is exactly that.

We are destined for something, and we're addicted to get there no matter what cost.

Now I see that happening very much so in the workplace, and it's a difficult thing that happens because of the fact that you have your strategic plans.

You've got all of your work plans for the year ready to go and to achieve all of the things that you want to.

But once you've achieved something, you jump on to the next goal, to the next project, to the next milestone, you don't stop. You don't take stock of what has been.

One really big risk for organizations that often happens is not stopping to pause to learn from the lessons of the project that has just been, to document it, and then to move on to the next thing.

So my question to you is: Are you a culprit of destination addiction?

If you are, what are you gonna do about it?

Let me know!
