 Maggie Redmon, Cascade Theatre's interim director, joins us to discuss her role with the theatre. Cascade Theatre for the past 20 years since reopening has established itself as the beacon of arts and culture. 

The historic theatre originally opened in 1935.  The theatre eventually shuttered with the original artwork and architecture being covered. Through community, private and public investment and involvement the Cascade Theatre reopened in 2004 with the original art deco design being reintroduced and preserved. 

Maggie shares celebration 20 years Celebration since the Cascade Restoration project, the current direction and goals that the Cascade theatre is working towards, and ways that you can become involved with continuing the impact of the Cascade Theatre as a beacon of arts and culture. 

The Sundial Bridge celebrates 20 years since its completition in the Redding Cultural District. Shannon Philips, Chief Operating Officer of the McConnell Foundation, joins the Downtown Discussion to discuss the 20 year milestone celebration. The Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, designed by international architect Santiago Calatava, crosses the Sacramento River in the heart of Redding, California. Opened July 4, 2004, the bridge links the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park and serves as a new downtown entrance for Redding’s extensive Sacramento River Trail system. Access to the Sundial Bridge and surrounding river trails are free to the public.

New Downtown Discussion Podcast: The Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce, President and CEO Jake Mangas, joins us on the downtown discussion for an exit interview. Jake has recently been hired as the new president of Mercy Foundation North and will begin his role in January of 2024. 

For the last eight years, Jake has navigated the Redding Chamber of Commerce. In this discussion, Jake shares why the Chamber became an early adopter of Downtown Redding revitalization efforts, the values of small businesses that make up a strong chamber, and his appreciation for everyone involved in establishing a vibrant community at the Chamber of Commerce and in Redding. 

Jake was our first interview for the Downtown Discussion, we are thankful at Viva Downtown to have worked with Jake and the incredible Chamber of Commerce staff on multiple projects and events. We wish him, and the Chamber of Commerce, a Happy New Year and Cheers to new beginnings.

Happy Holidays from the Viva Downtown Downtown Discussion! Jim Calhoun of Redding Electric Utility joins us on the podcast to kick off the Holiday Season. 

Jim Calhoun has been an arborist for close to 45 years, and began  his career with Asplundh Tree Expert Company in Trinity County. In 2003 Calhoun took on the roll of planning, harvesting, and lighting the tree as the supervising arborist for the City of Redding, Redding Electric Utility. This is the 104th year of the annual Downtown Tree Lighting and will be located in the original location on the interseciton of Market and Yuba Street.

Jim shares the process, history and the hard work that goes into making this Downtown tradition possible each year. We would like to thank all of the partners who make this tradition possible: Sierra Pacific Industries, Headrick Logging, Dura Crane, Cal Trans, California Highway Patrol, and the City of Redding.

This years tree was harvested 2 miles past Lake McCumber in Shingletown.
Over 1500 lights have been decorated on the 72 ft White Fir Tree.
It takes a crew of 7 REU workers to harvest and install the tree in Downtown.

The Tree Lighting lands on December 1, 2023, Downtown Redding's First Friday.

The Tree lights up right at 7 p.m.

The SBDC is a non-profit that has been around for over forty years, and is located across the United States, they are focused on making sure that business owners who are starting out, growing their business or transitioning their business have access to free resources, trainings and advising.  The Shasta Cascade SBDC has a large outreach in Northern California with around 15 advisors ready to work with entrepreneurs and business owners of all backgrounds and experience.

Shasta Living Streets OPENING CELEBRATION PODCAST: Shasta Bike Depot and Redding Bikeshare Project Completion: Shasta Living Streets the non-profit focused on biking and interconnected walking paths is celebrating the opening of their new, Shasta Bike Depot in Downtown Redding. 

Anne Thomas, the executive director of Shasta Living Streets, joins us on the Viva Downtown Downtown Discussion to share with us this historic preservation project of converting the Bell Rooms brick structure into the Shasta Bike Depot by utilizing the original bricks, when  E-Bikes/Bikeshare will become available in the Redding Cultural District, and how the Shasta Bike Depot will be an incredible resource to locals and tourism for biking transportation and a strong connected community and economy. 

The opening celebration of the Shasta Bike Depot is scheduled for; Friday May 12, at 1322 California Street Redding: 3 p.m. - 8 p.m.: Live music, a tour of the Shasta Bike Depot and live music by Marchfourth Brass Band. 

Bikeshare will become available Monday May 15, 2023. 70 bike docks have been placed around Downtown, River Trail, and Turtle bay.

Downtown Discussion: Parking Podcast- City of Redding Transportation Planner, Zach Bonnin,  joins Viva Downtown Program Coordinator, Blake Fisher, to discuss The City of Redding’s restructured Downtown Parking Plan that is set to be implemented in the new year after January 23, 2023. 

Zach, shares the history of parking in Downtown, the functionality of this restructured plan, and the timeline/realities of parking changes and how they affect Downtown transportation and the Downtown economy.  The City of Redding has more than 2,000 on-street and public off-street parking spaces in the Downtown core that will be available for use. Two private parking facilities Downtown provide additional public spaces, with 400 in the large parking garage on California Street and 60 spaces available in the garage under Market Center, located at 1551 Market Street.

- The rate for Downtown public metered parking or parking in City-owned lots will be $1.00 per hour, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm.  Parking is free on nights, weekends, and holidays, with no time limits after 6 pm. 

- -Privately-owned parking garages require payment 24 hours a day, seven days a week, up to $8.00 daily. Hundreds of free parking spaces without time limits are located just outside the paid parking zones and are available for anyone willing to walk a couple of blocks.

During this transition, metered parking in Downtown Redding will be free of charge, beginning Monday, December 19th, through Monday, January 23, 2023.  Parking time limits  will still apply, as stated in the parking  signage. Parking enforcement will notify drivers of the parking options ahead of the implementation of the new system. Beginning Monday, January 23, 2023, the payment system for metered parking downtown will be active. Warning notices for non-payment will be issued for the first couple weeks, at which time parking enforcement will begin issuing tickets.

-The parking system will utilize physical pay stations located throughout the Downtown core, in addition to other payment options. The pay stations will accept payment by coin, credit, or debit card.

-A second payment method, a mobile app called “Flowbird,” is available for download on smartphones and will identify your specific parking location, allowing easy payment with your smartphone. Once your vehicle and method of payment are entered, payments will be made simply and remotely, without the need to visit a pay station.

-The third payment option will allow users to pay via text, without the need for an app. This option, which is expected to come online in January 2023, will allow for a one-time payment, accessed by texting “ParkRDG” to 727563. This method will also provide text reminders to alert the user to the remaining time left on the parking meter and an option to add more time via text.
