THINKING BIBLICALLY ABOUT FERTILITY | BIRTH CONTROL, IVF, MARRIAGE & CHRISTIAN ETHICS

What does the Bible say about sexual ethics, fertility, birth control, IVF, and family planning? Should Christians think differently about contraception, sterilization, and the purpose of sex in marriage?

In this episode of Thinking Biblically, I am tackling one of my most requested (and controversial!) topics: Christian sexual ethics. After years of studying Scripture and walking through secondary infertility and miscarriage, I share how my understanding of fertility, marriage, and the Christian view of the body has changed.

We are talking about hormonal birth control, vasectomies, IVF, surrogacy, and natural family planning. This conversation may challenge what you have always believed, but the goal is not to tell you what to think, but to give you a starting point for further formation.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What Scripture teaches about fertility, marriage, and sex
  • Why my views on contraception has changed
  • The ethics of hormonal birth control and sterilization
  • IVF and surrogacy
  • How infertility and miscarriage have shaped my perspective
  • Approaching family planning with biblical wisdom

Watch the entire episode to hear my personal story, the research behind my changing views, and the questions I believe Christians should be asking. Email me for the notes from this episode at phylicia@phyliciamasonheimer.com.

181 | Thinking Biblically About Reading Habits15 oct. 202600:36:41

Should Christians read spicy books? How do we choose books that honor God? And how do we actually find time to read when life is busy?

In this episode of the Verity Podcast, we discuss thinking biblically about reading habits, Christian discernment, and how the books we choose shape our minds, hearts, and faith.

I share my thoughts on the decline of literacy, why Christians should care about what they're reading, and how Philippians 4:8 can guide our book choices. I tackle the growing popularity of sexually explicit fiction, and share my personal journey of breaking free from an addiction to erotic fiction.

But this episode isn't just about what NOT to read! I also share my favorite genres, Christian book recommendations, how I read multiple books at once, and the simple reading routine that works for me as a homeschooling mom, author, and ministry founder.

In this episode, we're talking about:

  • Why reading and literacy are declining in our digital world
  • How to choose books using biblical discernment and Philippians 4:8
  • The rise of sexually explicit fiction an the impact of it on our spiritual lives
  • Book genres worth exploring
  • How to develop better reading habits and improve your attention span, based on my own experience
  • Book recommendations and an update on Riverside Bookshop!

Whether you are an avid reader, trying to get back into reading, or wondering how to approach popular fiction as a Christian, this conversation will encourage you to think more intentionally about the books on your shelf.

180 | Thinking Biblically about AI in Bible Study01 oct. 202600:38:37

This week in our Thinking Biblically series, we're talking about another hot topic: the use of AI in Bible study. Whenever there is new technology, especially at this scale and influence, we as Christians are called to be discerning. But how do we determine what to use it for—or not use it for—when it seems Christians at large differ so widely in if, or how, they use it?

In this episode we'll talk about:
- Why it's important as a Christian to seek discernment about the use of AI
- How work, especially creative work, is a partnership with God, and how we image Him when we do our work well
-  Why it matters to have a strong theology of the Holy Spirit
- Every Woman a Theologian's AI policy
- What I don't recommend using AI for
- What I do recommend using AI for

If you've been told that AI is just a morally neutral tool and aren't quite sure how to think about it with a biblical mindset, this episode is for you!

179 | Thinking Biblically About "Finding Your Village"24 sept. 202601:12:47

What is a "village," and how do we cultivate one in our own lives? In this episode, we'll take a look at the traits of a village, reflect on the loneliness epidemic in America, and how the Bible gives us guidance on overcoming that epidemic by providing real instructions for cultivating community. We'll also consider how we often view friendships in a scarcity mindset, but how we can build healthier ones with an abundance mindset.

We'll discuss:

  • Historical traits of a "village"
  • What's causing the loneliness epidemic and how the Bible guides us to overcome it
  • Specific Bible verses on cultivating community
  • Three principles and three red flags to keep in mind when discerning friendships
  • Practical advice on how to make friends

If you've struggled with friendships or feeling like you don't know how to build community, this episode is for you!

178 | Thinking Biblically About Devotionals 17 sept. 202600:34:46

In this episode, Phylicia talks about the practice of using devotional books in the Christian walk. Are they a recent addition to Christian life, or have they been in use longer than we think? She then discusses the criteria she uses to discern whether a devotional book is helpful for her spiritual growth, and completes the episode by sharing a few of her favorites.

177 | Thinking Biblically About Denominations10 sept. 202601:06:00

In this episode, we look at the 8,000+ Christian denominations and ask whether all that division is evidence of a broken church — or branches growing off one vine. We'll walk through where the major denominations came from, why gathering with a local body isn't optional for a Christian, and how to actually choose a church without waiting for a perfect one.

In this episode, we examine:
- what the word "church" has meant since the assembly of Israel, and why a cookout with Christian friends isn't it
- why John 15's vine and branches is spoken to a gathered community, not to you alone in your living room
- the grace evangelicals are cutting themselves off from when church becomes optional
- a fast tour of church history: the Jerusalem church, the 1054 schism, the Reformation, and the origins of Lutheran, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Anabaptist, Congregational, Baptist, Church of Christ, and Pentecostal traditions
- the difference between denominations that split over doctrinal orthodoxy, over practice, and over mere preference
- what each tradition does well, and what they need to learn from one another
- four things to look for when choosing a church: doctrinal truth, social change, maturing community, and holding your preferences loosely

If you've been church hunting for years without finding the right fit, or you've wondered whether denominations are a problem to be solved, this episode is for you.

176 | Thinking Biblically About the Trad Wife Debate 03 sept. 202601:03:47

In this episode, we look at the Bible to answer the question both “trad wives” and feminists are attempting to answer: what is the purpose of a woman? We’ll see how both ends of the spectrum turn into fundamentalism, and how Scripture points us to a better and more practical understanding.

In this episode, we examine:
- the way current American culture defines the terms, “trad wife” and “feminist”
- historical roles of women in America, going back to the 1700s
- how the two viewpoints provoke one another and impact culture
- what the primary purpose of a Christian person is according to Scripture
- how to consider the purpose God has called you to in your current season

If you’re looking for clarity amidst the arguments of both sides and wondering what God says about your calling as a woman, this episode is for you.

174 | Answered Prayer: Testimonies to Strengthen Your Faith07 mai 202600:42:49

We've spent three months talking about prayer, and this final episode is where all of it comes to life. A few months ago, Jesse, our social media coordinator at Every Woman a Theologian, reached out to our community and asked them to share how God has been moving in their prayer lives. What came back left me emotional. Story after story of a personal, specific, loving God who hears and answers prayer. Sometimes with a yes, sometimes with a no, and sometimes in ways that are even more beautiful than what was asked for.

You'll hear testimonies of answered prayers through miscarriage and grief, infertility and miraculous pregnancies, job searches, family conflict, postpartum anxiety, healing, and so much more. I want to be honest with you—not all of these are happy endings. Some of the most powerful testimonies in this episode come from women holding the tension between grief and gratitude. But all of them point to a God who sees, who cares, and who answers specifically.

If your faith has been feeling thin or your prayers feel like they're hitting the ceiling, I hope these stories remind you that our God is not distant. He is near, and He is listening.

173 | Women, Anxiety & Prayer with Dr. Rachel Rauch30 avr. 202600:32:47

Dr. Rachel Rauch and Phylicia Masonheimer will talk about the relationship between anxiety and prayer: how to navigate the tension of physical and spiritual causes for anxiety, and how women can find peace with God.

Rachel Rauch, board certified as a traditional Doctor of Naturopathy and founder of Eiro Wellness, is a Christ-follower who recognizes that restoring health involves more than addressing the physical body. True healing also requires support for emotional, relational, and spiritual well-being. She specializes in brain and mood health, understanding that fatigue, digestive concerns, and hormone imbalances often coexist with anxiety and depression.

172 | Praying Through Chronic Illness & Suffering with Olivia Gerber23 avr. 202600:35:16

Olivia Gerber is a sunset-chasing, Jesus-loving adventurer based in Northern Indiana. She finds pleasure in perfectly ripe avocados, plane tickets, and lavender lattes, but her deepest joy is found at the feet of her Savior and she longs to spread His hope in the world. Her health challenges have given her a tender heart toward those facing chronic pain, and she loves bringing hope to this under-served community through her book, Hold Hope. She recently married the curly love of her life and is loving her new adventure with Jack!

In this conversation, Olivia shares how suffering stripped away her sense of control and turned her faith inside out—and how praise, specific prayer, and keeping a record of God's faithfulness carried her through the hardest years. If you're in a season where the answer feels like "no" or "not yet," I hope this encourages you to keep praying anyway.

You can find Olivia at letterstoholdhope.com and on Instagram @letterstoholdhope. Her book "Hold Hope" is available through the Every Woman a Theologian shop.

171 | Praying God's Word for All of Life's Seasons with Jodie Berndt16 avr. 202600:38:31

I'm thrilled to introduce you to my friend Jodie Berndt as we wrap up the prayer series with three special interviews. I've known Jodie for eight years, and her books have been such a blessing in my life—especially "Praying the Scriptures for Your Children," which I've read three times. Jodie has written over a dozen books on praying scripture for your children, teens, adult children, marriage, and life, so whether you're a parent or not, there's something here for you.

In this conversation, Jodie shares her personal testimony of why she came to praying scripture and how it's impacted her walk with God. We talk about why prayer matters, how to turn passages into conversations with God, and practical ways to get started if this practice is new to you. Jodie's wisdom comes from 40 years of marriage, raising four children, and teaching Bible study in her local church—and her heart for family and scripture shines through everything she does.

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by what to pray for or struggled to find the words, this episode will equip you with a biblical framework for praying with confidence. You can find Jodie's books wherever you buy books, and she offers free prayer calendars and resources at jodieberndt.com.

169 | What Is Praying in Tongues—and Is It for Christians Today? 19 mars 202600:37:18

Growing up in a Pentecostal church, I have witnessed people speaking in tongues many times. But what is praying in tongues, and is it for Christians today? If you've ever wondered what the Bible actually teaches about this spiritual gift, whether the ability to speak in tongues is proof of salvation, or why some churches emphasize it and others don't, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we start with Acts 2 and the day of Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit empowered believers to speak in real languages they had never learned. We'll explore why this moment was so significant—it wasn't just random; it was the fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:33, when God's law was written on the hearts of His people. Then we move to 1 Corinthians 12–14, where Paul explains that tongues is just one of the spiritual gifts and that it should be used in an orderly and edifying way. It is not something every believer receives and is not a requirement for salvation.

I also share perspectives from both continuationist and cessationist traditions so you can understand the broader conversation within the church. Whether you're Pentecostal, Baptist, Reformed, or somewhere in between, my hope is that this episode equips you to study Scripture for yourself and approach this topic with humility and discernment.

168 | Liturgical Prayers: Are Written Prayers Biblical or Just Empty Tradition?12 mars 202600:40:15

Are written prayers biblical or just empty tradition? If you've ever felt like praying someone else's words isn't "sincere" or questioned whether liturgical prayers belong in the Christian life, this episode will challenge your assumptions and open up a rich tradition of faith. Did Jesus forbid scripted prayers in Matthew 6:6–7? Many Christians assume prayer must always be spontaneous. But throughout both Jewish and early Christian worship, written prayers were a normal part of community life.

In this episode, we look at the history of liturgical prayer and why Acts 2:42 says the early believers devoted themselves to “the prayers.” We’ll also talk about how written prayers can strengthen—not replace—your personal conversations with God. We will also explore the beauty and biblical foundation of liturgical prayers, from the Psalms (which are themselves written prayers) to the Book of Common Prayer and prayers written by early church fathers like Polycarp. Many American evangelicals dismiss written prayers as "ritualistic" or empty tradition, but Scripture shows us that God gave us the Psalms to pray, Jesus gave us the Lord's Prayer to pray, and faithful Christians throughout history have used written prayers to train themselves in adoration, confession, and thanksgiving—not just requests. I also share a few favorite historic prayer resources and simple ways to turn Scripture into your own prayers.

167 | Why Do I Feel Bored in Prayer?05 mars 202600:39:13

Why does prayer feel boring sometimes? If you've ever struggled to stay focused during prayer, felt distracted, or wondered why some Christians seem so enriched by prayer while you feel disconnected, this episode will bring clarity and hope.  Phylicia explores four key reasons why prayer can feel boring—and what to do about it: spiritual warfare (the enemy doesn't want you praying), overstimulation (we're unused to silence and stillness), request-based vs. relationship-based prayer, and duty-based habits that lack intimacy. Scripture shows us that showing up consistently creates the intimacy we're looking for—discipline leads to joy, and action precedes feeling.

166 | Does God hear Everyone's Prayers?26 févr. 202600:40:10

Does God hear everyone’s prayers? In this episode, we explore what Scripture really teaches about righteousness, salvation, and effective prayer, unpacking what it means to be “righteous” not by works, but by faith in Christ (Philippians 3:9). Phylicia addresses hard questions like: Does God hear unrighteous or prideful prayers? What about the prayers of unbelievers? And do more prayers really equal more power? If you’ve ever wondered whether God hears your prayers, how humility matters, or how faith and fervency work together, this biblical teaching will bring clarity, encouragement, and gospel-centered hope.

165 | Can Satan Hear My Prayers? 19 févr. 202600:26:00

Can Satan hear your prayers? Can he block or manipulate what you ask God to do? In this episode, we answer one of the most searched questions about spiritual warfare and prayer: Is Satan omniscient—and does he have power over your prayer life? If you’ve ever felt anxiety about praying out loud or wondered whether the enemy can sidetrack your prayers, this biblical teaching will bring clarity and confidence.  Scripture makes clear that only God is all-knowing (1 John 3: 20; Proverbs 15: 3; Isaiah 40: 13–14). Satan is powerful—but limited—and his defeat is certain (Revelation 20: 10; Matthew 25: 41). We explore Ephesians 6 and 2 Corinthians 10 to understand why prayer is spiritual warfare—and how spoken prayer partners you with Christ rather than empowering the enemy.

In this episode:

– Can Satan hear my prayers?

 – Can the enemy block or delay God’s answers?

 – How does spiritual warfare actually work?

 – Should Christians fear praying out loud?

If you want to pray with confidence instead of fear, this episode will help you rest in God’s sovereignty.

164 | When God Doesn't Answer 12 févr. 202600:49:15

Why do some of our prayers seem to go unanswered—temporarily, long-term, or forever? How do we keep praying when answers are delayed or don't look the way we hoped?  In this episode, we tackle one of the hardest questions in the Christian life: understanding God's responses to prayer when they don't match our expectations.

In this episode, we examine:

✓ What does "ask anything and it will be yours" really mean? (Mark 11:24, John 15:7)

✓ The difference between prosperity gospel and biblical prayer

✓ Why faith isn't about "believing hard enough"

✓ Four reasons God delays or denies prayer requests

✓ How to trust God's character when prayers aren't answered

✓ The supernatural work happening behind our prayers

✓ Praying with persistence through long seasons of waiting

If you've ever felt discouraged by unanswered prayer, this episode will help you pray with faith and hope—even in the waiting.

163 | Praying God's Will 05 févr. 202600:40:43

How do you pray God's will—without trying to control the outcome?  In this episode, we break down what Scripture actually teaches about the will of God and how to pray in alignment with His truth and character. Learn the difference between bold, biblical prayer and self-centered or "manifesting" language, and discover how God's will is revealed through His Word—not guesswork.

If you're a woman seeking clarity, confidence, and depth in your prayer life, this teaching will help you pray with boldness, humility, and trust.

In this episode, we examine:

✓ What is the will of God? (Romans 12:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Micah 6:8)

✓ How to discern God's will through a renewed mind

✓ The difference between praying boldly and praying selfishly

✓ Why God doesn't always give us a "blueprint" for decisions

✓ How to pray freely without fear of getting it "wrong"

✓ Biblical prayer vs. manifestation theology

160 | Why God Doesn't Need Your Hustle: Learning to Rest in Him11 oct. 202500:35:53

What if God can do more without your hustle than with it? Lisa Fields of the Jude 3 Project shares her journey from workaholic apologist to discovering that God doesn't need our striving—He wants our trust, our healed hearts, and our willingness to rest in His sufficiency.

💡 Key Scripture: "Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders' labor is in vain... He grants sleep to those he loves." - Psalm 127:1-2

The Big Truth: God doesn't need your hustle. Rest isn't avoidance or vacation—it's a posture of complete trust in God. When we truly rest in Him, He does what our striving never could, without the soul-damaging side effects.

159 | Carry The Gospel: How One Conversation Changed Everything27 sept. 202500:36:42

This incredible testimony from Verity Conference 2024 will transform how you think about everyday evangelism. Leila shares her powerful story from Muslim family to Christian ministry, and reveals the four practical ways we can all carry God's Kingdom into our daily lives.

Four Ways to Carry the Kingdom:

- Pursue Kingdom Priorities - Aligning your agenda with heaven's agenda

- Possess Kingdom Mysteries - Bringing "kingdom souvenirs" to others

- Assume Kingdom Posture - Childlike faith and dependence on God

- Release Kingdom Power - Holy Spirit power through everyday conversations

The Dentist Story: How a simple conversation during a dental appointment led to a complete life transformation - from curious patient to worship team member in under a year.

Key Scripture: Acts 17:6-7 - "These men who have turned the world upside down"

🎥 About This Session: From Verity Conference 2024 featuring Leila, who traveled from Australia to Northern Michigan. She represents the diversity we seek - different backgrounds, marital status, and cultural perspectives that show how the Gospel applies across all walks of life.

💭 Discussion Questions:  What Kingdom priorities need to align in your life? How can you start "kingdom conversations" naturally? Who in your world is waiting for the Gospel?  This session proves that carrying God's Kingdom isn't about big platforms - it's about faithful conversations in dentist chairs, neighborhoods, and everyday encounters.

158 | Speak Your Story: How Your Testimony Changes the World20 sept. 202500:43:28

This powerful conference session connects directly to our previous episode about our 5-month podcast break. While the last episode shared the "happy ending" of our infertility journey with baby Olivera's birth, this session was recorded in the middle of that same story - during failed fertility treatments with no promise of resolution.

 In This Session:

  • The demon-possessed man's story from Mark 5
  • Why Jesus intentionally enters our broken stories
  • How sharing your story defeats the enemy

Breaking through 4 lies that keep us silent:

  • "My story is insignificant" → Your story has IMPACT
  • "My story is a trigger" → Your story TRANSFORMS
  •  "My story is intimidating" → Your story is INTIMATE
  • "My story needs a happy ending" → Your story proclaims God's goodness NOW

The Connection: This session shows what it looks like to live out faith in real time during trials, before knowing how God will answer our prayers. It's the theological foundation for everything we shared in our previous episode about living out theology in pain.

📖 Scripture Focus: Mark 5:1-20 - The healing of the demon-possessed man

157 | Living Out Theology in Pain: The Real Story Behind Our 5 Month Break13 sept. 202500:22:56

After an unexpected 5-month podcast break, we're back with our most vulnerable episode yet. While Every Woman A Theologian kept going, we had to pause the podcast to navigate some of life's biggest challenges. What does it look like to live out theology in the middle of pain and difficulty? Here's the real story of why we stepped back from podcasting and how we've had to practice what we preach in our darkest moments.

In This Episode:

  • Living Out Theology in Real Life
  • Why we paused the podcast
  • Walking through secondary infertility and loss
  • Balancing ministry travel with family crisis
  • A prophetic dream that sustained our faith
  • Getting ready to meet our miracle baby
  • The ministry work that continued behind the scenes

🙏 Prayer Requests: Pray for baby Olivera as we welcome her into our family, and for wisdom as we navigate this new season of ministry.

155 | Do Christians Need to Obey Old Testament Law?22 mars 202500:25:45

Salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ alone—a truth that stands in contrast to a growing movement in the West of “Torah Observant Christians” who argue that Gentile believers must follow Old Testament laws to secure salvation. Phylicia, however, emphasizes a key distinction: while Jewish Christians may observe these laws as part of their cultural heritage and historical connection, such practices are not necessary for salvation.    ————————————————

Phylicia Masonheimer delves into the historical heresy of Arianism, which denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ, highlighting its unexpected resurgence in the theologies of Jehovah's Witnesses and Latter-Day Saints.
