Stepping into leadership can feel exciting… and quietly overwhelming.

In this reflective episode of Little Moves, Big Careers, Caroline pulls together the key lessons from four powerful career conversations - each revealing what leadership really looks like behind the scenes.

If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re ready, capable, or doing enough, then this one’s for you.

  • Why curiosity matters more than having the answers

  • The hidden power of relationships in shaping opportunity
  • How embracing your identity at work builds confidence and momentum

#45 | How To Build Influence, Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Prepare for Promotion by Thinking Like a Board Member17 Feb 202600:43:05

Discipline isn’t about willpower. It’s about trade-offs.

In this episode of Little Moves, Big Careers, Caroline chats with Dr. Keith Dorsey about the habits that quietly shape extraordinary careers - from martial arts at six years old, to the US Air Force, to leading major corporate turnarounds and serving on boards.

They explore:

  • Why discipline is a muscle; not a personality trait
  • The leadership mistake that even high performers make
  • What separates management from governance
  • Why most people think about board roles too late
  • How curiosity and reflection create long-term momentum

If you’ve ever wondered how to move from doing the work… to influencing the direction of the work - this conversation is for you.

#36 | How To Build Influence Under Pressure and Overcome Imposter Syndrome for Promotion16 Dec 202500:11:26

Pressure: This is the big one. The call centre story. The real, messy, emotionally brilliant tale of Amina - QC Queen, calm diplomat, and unofficial backbone of the entire operation.

On December 22nd the wallboard turns red, the VIP line collapses, agents are in tears, and the CEO shows up unannounced… just in time to take a call he’s absolutely not ready for. Amina doesn’t rescue him.

She reveals the truth.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • The sound of collective panic when the wallboard hits “Queue: 198”
  • How emotional labour keeps entire industries running
  • The CEO learning more in five minutes than in five strategy decks
  • The moment frontline expertise becomes undeniable

Power Move:

Be Seen Little Move: Make the truth visible to the person who needs to see it. What You’ll Take Away: Leadership isn’t title. It’s clarity under pressure. And sometimes the smallest act (showing someone the reality) changes everything.

#35 | How Small Acts of Clarity Build Influence and Create Promotion Momentum09 Dec 202500:13:27

Episode 2 brings us to the Marketing department, where a mystery Christmas hamper lands on Desk 14, belonging to the formidable Margaret - patron saint of “I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.”

Cue panic, silence, and the kind of tension only a British office can generate over chutney, cheese wheels, and a questionable ribbon.

A tiny moment of misplaced gifting turns into a masterclass in pattern spotting, calm thinking, and stepping up when no one else will.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • A whole office freeze because Margaret simply asks a question
  • The Business Development junior’s walk of shame
  • The “Bold move” whisper that tells you everything about workplace politics
  • Why small acts of courage create huge ripples

Power Move: Make It Matter
Little Move: Deliver clarity when everyone else is dithering.

What You’ll Take Away:
Office drama is never about the hamper. It’s about ownership, expectations, and knowing when to act instead of stare.

#34 | What a Christmas Temp Can Teach You About Influence, Visibility, and Promotion02 Dec 202500:12:01

In Episode 1 we meet Holly - a 19-year-old Christmas temp who gets dropped into a chaotic consultancy in December… the exact moment clients start demanding miracles before close-down.

Holly doesn’t shout, she doesn’t flail, she doesn’t grandstand.
She notices.
She organises.
She builds the one thing the entire team needed and didn’t realise: a list that prevented a full-blown Christmas Eve catastrophe.

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • Why outsider perspective is a secret superpower
  • How quiet clarity outperforms loud panic every time
  • The hilarious moment Holly accidentally becomes the most competent person in the building
  • Why the 2mm Difference is often just… writing the list

Power Move: Spot & Solve
Little Move: Notice the mess no one else is looking at.

What You’ll Take Away:
The smallest interventions (especially from unexpected people) can completely shift a team’s trajectory. Visibility isn’t noise. Visibility is impact.

#27 | How Women in Leadership Build Influence Without Changing Who They Are at Work11 Nov 202500:28:28

Ever been told you need to tone it down, stay in your lane, or “just fit in first”?

This episode of Little Moves, Big Careers is your permission slip to stop sanding down your edges.

Caroline dives deep into the Maverick’s Survival Guide - a bold, honest look at how people who think differently can survive (and actually thrive) inside systems that aren’t built for them.

She explores what happens when “inclusion” quietly becomes “assimilation,” and why true belonging means being valued because of your difference.

You’ll hear Carolin's personal story of being labelled a “maverick” (not as a compliment), the quiet damage that caused, and the lessons she’s learned about turning individuality into impact.

In this episode:

  • The Maverick’s Dilemma: You want to belong but not at the cost of your value.
  • Culture of Sameness vs. Culture of Difference: How to feel the energy shift when a team truly values individuality.
  • The Three Traps of Maverick Thinking:
The Lone Wolf Trap - when independence becomes isolation.
The Volume Trap - why louder doesn’t mean clearer.
The Translation Trap - how passion can make you sound vague (and how to fix it).
  • The Collaboration Code: What happens when difference becomes strength, not threat and why true collaboration is productive friction, not endless harmony.
  • People Aren’t Difficult, Just Different: The mindset shift that transforms conflict into curiosity.
  • Quote Crime: “You just need to fit in before you stand out.” Nope. Stop sanding down your edges. They’re the reason you sparkle.

#44 | Why Ego Undermines Influence, Fuels Imposter Syndrome and Delays Promotion for Great Leaders10 Feb 202600:41:39

What if leadership isn’t about having the answers at all?

In this episode, I’m joined by leadership coach and former senior police leader Zoe Thompson, whose 20-year career in policing offers some of the most honest, grounded lessons I’ve heard about trust, ego, and what leadership really looks like when the pressure is on.

We talk about leading people who know more than you, being comfortable saying “I don’t know”, and why ego (not a lack of capability) is often the thing that quietly undermines teams and performance.

We also reframe imposter syndrome, explore why decision-making feels so hard in modern organisations, and unpack what great leaders actually do when things are messy, uncertain, or emotionally charged.

This is a reflective, practical conversation for anyone who leads others,  or is figuring out how they want to lead.

What We Cover

  • Why leadership isn’t about expertise (and what it is about instead)
  • How ego shows up as control, certainty, and defensiveness at work
  • The difference between psychological safety and “open door” policies
  • A powerful reframe of imposter syndrome as self-awareness, not weakness
  • How good leaders make decisions without waiting for perfect information
  • What it really means to clear the way for your team
  • Trust as a two-way relationship (and how quickly it can be lost)
  • Navigating redundancy, identity shifts, and values-led career moves

Key Takeaway

Great leadership doesn’t come from knowing more. Instead, it comes from listening better, letting go of ego, and creating the conditions for other people to do their best work.

Often, the smallest shift - one better question, one moment of restraint, one honest conversation - is where the real change begins.

#26 | How to Perform Under Pressure, Build Influence, and Overcome Imposter Syndrome at Work04 Nov 202500:33:55

What if excellence isn’t about working harder… but managing your energy, pride, and discipline smarter?

This week, Caroline dives into the difference between commitment and compliance and why whole teams leak energy when excellence turns into exhaustion.

You’ll Learn

  • How to spot when effort has become self-harm, not self-respect
  • Why excellence starts with calm clarity
  • What “energy leaks” are, and how to plug them fast
  • The simple shift from “I have to” → “I want to” that transforms culture
  • Why real professionals run on pride, not pressure

Research says

  • Consistent energy from leaders = +53% engagement (Gallup)
  • Emotional regulation = +24% better decision-making (Journal of Applied Psychology)
  • Calm brains are creative brains (Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence)

Quickfire Career Moves

  • Rewrite one update from effort → outcome
  •  Book a 45-minute 'craft' block to protect your best work
  •  Run the 5-minute Leak Audit - check your calm clarity after every meeting

The Takeaway

You can’t fix “bare minimum” people by doing more. You fix them by showing what smart excellence looks like - visible outcomes, calm energy, and boundaries that say: “I care about results, not theatrics.”

Because compliance runs on rules. Commitment runs on pride.

Listen now: Caroline on excellence, energy, and the quiet power of staying disciplined when everyone else is distracted.

#24 | How to Turn Quiet Effort Into Influence, Visibility, and Promotion Momentum21 Oct 202500:21:44

In this episode, Caroline expands the conversation on the career flywheel, turning focus to two critical and often overlooked power moves: Find Your Friends and Be Seen. While many professionals focus on the tangible aspects of work like spotting problems, solving them, and delivering results, careers rarely accelerate without visibility and connection.

Caroline explores why hard work alone doesn’t travel, the psychology behind recognition gaps, and how reputation and relationships carry your impact further. Drawing on research from McKinsey, LeanIn.org, and Harvard, she unpacks the hidden dynamics of trust, credibility, and informal influence and offers practical steps to turn quiet effort into visible impact.

TAKEAWAYS

  • Most careers don’t stall from lack of skill, but from lack of visibility and connection.
  • Networking isn’t about collecting contacts; it’s about building trust.
  • People can’t value what they can’t see.
  • Women are 43% less likely to be recognised for their ideas, even when contributing equally - a visibility gap, not a capability gap. Many men experience this too, especially those conditioned to believe their work “speaks for itself.”
  • The strongest networks are built on Amplifiers, Anchors, and Challengers - people who mention your name in rooms you’re not in, ground you when doubt hits, and push you to play bigger.
  • Consistent visibility habits (from sharing progress updates to amplifying others) turn effort into evidence and contacts into champions.
  • Quiet credibility becomes unstoppable when it’s seen, shared, and supported.

SOUND BITES

  • “Hard work doesn’t travel, reputation does.”
  • “Networking isn’t collecting contacts; it’s curating trust.”
  • “Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s clarity.”
  • “If people can’t see what you bring, they can’t value it.”
  • “Turn effort into evidence, and contacts into champions.”
  • “Quiet brilliance doesn’t get noticed, visible impact does.”

#23 | How Visible Value Builds Influence and Gets You Noticed for Promotion14 Oct 202500:21:11

In this episode, Caroline Esterson explores how to apply insights from the previous conversation with Declan Allen into actionable steps for career development. She introduces the concept of the career flywheel, emphasising the importance of adding value over merely being busy, spotting and solving workplace issues, and creating space for deep work. Practical moves are suggested to enhance productivity and challenge the 'do more with less' mindset, ultimately encouraging listeners to focus on what truly matters in their careers.

TAKEAWAYS

  • The importance of getting noticed for results, not intentions.
  • Understanding the difference between doing your job and adding real value is crucial.
  • Most people operate within their job description, missing opportunities for growth.
  • Organisations value those who can cut through noise and focus on what matters.
  • Creating friction in workflows can lead to better outcomes.
  • Tracking time spent on tasks can reveal areas for improvement.

SOUND BITES

  • "You can't fix what you won't name."
  • "Make the move, even if it's tiny."

#9 | How to Build Career Resilience, Strengthen Influence, and Quiet Imposter Syndrome at Work29 Jul 202500:18:54

Ever smiled through a team meeting while mentally planning your escape to a remote cottage in Wales? Or replied “No worries!” to a Friday 5pm request while quietly Googling “how to become a llama farmer”?

This episode is not about pretending everything’s fine. It’s about real optimism - the kind that doesn’t require vision boards, scented candles, or toxic positivity. Just one honest check-in, one tiny shift, and one decision to climb above the line.

If you’ve ever felt flat, burnt out, or stuck smiling through the madness, this one’s for you.

  • Burnout doesn't always look like collapse. Sometimes it looks like “fine.”
  • Real resilience comes from reflection, not denial.
  • Protecting your spark is leadership, not laziness.
  • You don’t have to feel great to move - you just need to move with intention.

#8 | Why Perfectionism Is Blocking Your Promotion, Influence, and Confidence at Work22 Jul 202500:15:47
  • Ever spent hours watching webinars, highlighting your notes, colour-coding your to-do list… and still felt stuck? That’s planning disguised as progress, and it’s one of the sneakiest ways we stall our careers. In this episode, we call out perfectionism for the joy-thieving con it is, and champion messy, scrappy, unpolished action that actually gets results.

Caroline spills some of her most cringe-worthy (but career-defining) moments, including mismatched shoes at a pitch, a coffee-soaked disaster, and the reply-all apocalypse and prove that magic doesn’t come from polished plans… it comes from movement. Even wobbly ones.

Key Takeaways

  • Messy action beats perfect planning every time, especially when it comes to career momentum.
  • Perfectionism is productivity in a tuxedo, it looks smart but gets you nowhere.
  • Procrastination isn’t laziness, it’s emotional self-protection. Understand the brain science behind why we stall.
  • Every cringe is a clue. Mistakes aren’t failure, they’re intel.
  • Clarity is earned through action, not overthinking.

Ready to ditch the pressure to be perfect?

Hit play and take the messiest little move you’ve got. It might just be the one that changes everything.

  • From rising fast in the leisure industry to having her career derailed by a serious car accident…
  • From leadership roles in education to facing cancer and completely rethinking what “success” means…

Sonia’s story is a masterclass in adaptability, transferable skills, and choosing to keep moving forward when life throws serious curveballs.

In Part One, we explore:

  • Why “making it work” became Sonia’s default response to setbacks
  • The bold move she made at 22 that changed her career trajectory
  • How leadership is really about people, not job titles
  • What happens when your identity is wrapped up in your work and it’s suddenly taken away
  • How illness forced a rethink of priorities, purpose, and pace

This is not a neat, linear career story.
It’s a real one. And that’s exactly why it matters.

🎧 Part Two drops next week, where we dive into transferable skills, bounce-back-ability, and how Sonia rebuilt a whole new working life on her own terms.

#6 | Why Confidence Alone Won’t Get You Promotion or Influence - Curiosity Will08 Jul 202500:21:09

The boldest careers aren’t built on perfect plans; they’re built by people who stay curious. Strategically. Unapologetically. And often, just a little cheekily.

In this episode of Little Moves, Big Careers, Caro unpacks why curiosity beats confidence every time and how to use it as your secret career edge.

You’ll hear:

  •  A story about 208 seconds that proves calm curiosity saves the day
  •  A listener wondering if trying something new makes them “flaky” (spoiler: nope)
  •  The truth about “Jack of all trades” and why it’s time for its redemption arc

This episode will get you thinking differently, asking smarter questions, and spotting opportunities before everyone else does.

Because you don’t need to be fearless.
You just need to stay curious long enough to find out what’s possible.

#5 | Why Chasing Promotion the Traditional Way Fuels Imposter Syndrome and Limits Your Influence01 Jul 202500:21:24

In this episode of Little Moves, Big Careers, Caroline Esterson gets gloriously real about the messy truth of career paths, emphasising that success is not linear, no matter what the old-school career ladder crowd wants you to believe. Instead, we’re talking zigzag moves, surprise sliding doors moments, and the wild power of zigging when you're told to zag.

Caroline takes aim at the myth of the straight line and hands you a better map, one where detours, pivots, and “Wait, how did I end up here?” moments are actually rocket fuel for personal and professional growth. If you've ever felt like you took the long way round, good news: you’re not lost, you’re levelling up.

You’ll walk away with practical advice, a dash of cheek, and full permission to define success on your own (gloriously unpredictable) terms.

Key takeaways

  • Careers are not straight lines; they are weather systems.
  • Success is often found in unexpected pivots.
  • Recognising sliding doors moments can change your career trajectory.
  • The traditional career ladder is becoming obsolete.
  • Zigzagging through your career can lead to valuable experiences.
  • Chase experiences rather than titles or positions.
  • Curiosity and awareness are key to spotting opportunities.
  • It's important to trust patterns over rigid plans.
  • Don't let conventional wisdom limit your potential.
  • Progress is not always perfect, but it is still progress.

Sound Bites

"Progress doesn't always look like sunshine."
"Chase experiences, not jobs."
"Start trusting pattern over plan."

Quick Fire Career Moves You’ll Learn

  • Stop asking “Is this the right move?”, start asking “What will I learn?”
  • Trust the pattern over the plan. Your instincts are wiser than your CV.
  • Ask people how they really got where they are. Note to self: it’s never the five-year plan.

Listen if You’re:

  • Second-guessing a job change that doesn’t look neat
  • Tired of chasing titles and ready to chase truth
  • Trying to explain your zigzag to your Dad, your boss, or your inner critic
  • Ready to make the brave, weird move… and own it

#3 | How The Club Shapes Your Promotion and Influence Without You Even Knowing17 Jun 202500:25:28

Ever had that sinking feeling that the real meeting happened before the meeting?
Or that someone less capable got the nod while you’re still “being patient”?

Welcome to The Club; no badges, no invites, just power.

In this episode of Little Moves, Big Careers, Caroline Esterson lifts the velvet rope on how influence really works at work. You’ll learn how unspoken rules, subtle loyalties, and quiet confidence shape who gets picked, praised, and promoted; and how to stop waiting for permission to join.

You’ll discover:

  • Why effort doesn’t equal visibility (and what does)
  • The neuroscience of exclusion — and why it literally hurts to be left out
  •  How to spot informal power patterns and play smarter, not louder
  •  Why The Club isn’t always evil — it’s often emotional
  •  Three bold-but-doable moves to get noticed without faking it

Inside the episode:

  •  Are YOU in The Club?  Take the cheeky, too-close-to-home quiz
  •  Real or Rubbish? Decode whether that weird workplace moment is Club Code or just corporate chaos
  •  What Would Caro Do?  A listener from Preston is done being overlooked.
  •  Quickfire Career Moves: 3 fast shifts to move from helpful to highly strategic
  •  Career Quote Crime: “If you work hard, you’ll be recognised.” Nope. You’ll be tired. Caro serves the smarter truth.

This episode exposes the unspoken rulebook of modern careers and helps you rewrite it with intention, clarity, and a bit of sass.

#2 | 4 Bad Managers You Need to Stop Trusting With Your Promotion and Influence11 Jun 202500:12:42

If you've ever felt like your manager was more “in the way” than “in your corner,” this one’s for you. You'll learn how to handle difficult managers to help your career flourish.

In this sharp-tongued but clear-eyed bonus episode, Caroline takes you on a safari through the modern workplace zoo, spotting typical leadership characters like The Deflector, The Bouncer, The Squirrel, The Chameleon, and yes, even the elusive Amplifier.

It’s not about moaning. It’s about naming the pattern so you can stop internalising the chaos and start working around it like the savvy human you are.

Learn how to:

  • Handle managers who deflect, dodge, and disappear
  • Respond (not react) to dodgy leadership
  • Use E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome) to take back control
  • Amplify yourself—even if no one else is

You’ll laugh, wince, and probably recognise a few of your former line managers… but most importantly, you’ll leave equipped with cheeky scripts, smart strategies, and a whole lot more control over your career than you thought you had.

Because waiting to be noticed? That’s a system that’s failed you before.
This time, you’re moving first. With style.

Listen now and reclaim your agency, one bold move at a time.

#1 | A Simple Mindset Shift to Build Influence and Earn a Promotion10 Jun 202500:21:20

Are you a high-performing woman in corporate leadership who keeps delivering, keeps proving yourself, and still wonders why promotion and influence feel just out of reach?

In this episode, Caroline Esterson challenges one of the biggest workplace myths women are still being sold: that doing a good job is enough. For women navigating corporate leadership, promotion is rarely about effort alone. It is about visibility, clarity, influence, and learning how to communicate your value without letting imposter syndrome keep you small.

  • Discover why hard work alone does not lead to promotion or greater influence in corporate leadership
  • Learn how to shift from being seen as reliable to being recognised as a strategic, promotable leader
  • Understand how imposter syndrome quietly affects visibility, self-advocacy, and leadership presence at work

Play this episode to learn how to build influence, overcome imposter syndrome, and make the small strategic moves that lead to real promotion momentum.

#41 | Why Influence, Learning and Small Career Moves Matter More Than Perfect Plans for Promotion20 Jan 202601:04:10

This is a very special episode of the podcast.

Today’s conversation is with Jon Turner, Managing Director of Siemens Electrification & Automation in the UK and Ireland AND the very first person I interviewed for the book research that sparked this whole project. It was in this conversation that the “little moves” pattern first became impossible to ignore.

Jon’s career was shaped by sliding-door moments, chance conversations, small risks, great mentors, and a deep willingness to learn. From a lift conversation that led to a life-changing opportunity, to navigating career pivots, leadership challenges, and glass ceilings, Jon’s story is a powerful reminder that careers are rarely linear and that patience, curiosity and relationships matter more than perfect plans.

What really stands out in this interview, though, isn’t just what Jon did; it’s how he did it.

He talks openly about:

  • Why making mistakes early in your career is not just normal, but essential
  • The danger of ambition running ahead of learning
  • Why authenticity matters more than trying to “fit the mould”
  • How mentoring (and reverse mentoring) shapes better leaders
  • Why strong teams are built on trust, energy and everyday human connection
  • And why being an avid learner is the most important career strategy of all

Jon also speaks beautifully and proudly about his wife, Alison, and the partnership behind his career, reminding us that success is never a solo sport, and that the people who support us matter just as much as the roles we hold.

Very sadly, Jon passed away suddenly in November after a short battle with kidney cancer. With the generous blessing of his wife, Alison, I am honoured to share his words in this episode and to help keep Jon’s legacy of warmth, curiosity, generosity and belief in people alive.

If you’ve ever felt pressure to have your whole career mapped out…
If you’ve ever worried about making the “wrong” move…
Or if you simply want a reminder that great careers are built one small, human step at a time…

This episode is for you.

🎧 And if you take something from Jon’s words, Ali and I would love to hear it. You can share your reflections with me at caroline@inspireyourgenius.com

#40 | How To Spot the Career Signals That Help You Build Influence for Promotion13 Jan 202600:22:49

Before we dive into real-life career stories, let’s talk about something seriously underrated: noticing.

Big career changes rarely start with big decisions.  They start with small signals we almost ignore.

In this short, punchy bridge episode, Caroline shares a personal story and explains why the moments that don’t look like turning points often matter most.

You’ll learn

  • Why your emotional reactions at work are actually useful data
  • How to spot early career signals before frustration turns into burnout
  • The simple CPR check (Content, Process, Reaction) to decode what’s really going on
  • And how to turn tiny clues into 2mm career moves that build momentum

Plus, there’s a quick game of Signal or Static? to help you practise spotting what’s worth paying attention to ... and what’s just background noise.

This is your warm-up before we launch into real career stories next week.
Listen like a detective. Your future self will thank you.

What We Cover

  • Why meaningful things often start with random, tiny moments
  • The brain’s habit of explaining away other people’s success
  • Emotional reactions as early warning signs (or growth signals)
  • The CPR Career Check: Content, Process, Reaction
  • Game time: Signal or Static?
  • Turning noticing into small, brave, practical next moves

Ah, the office Christmas party.
Less “festive joy,” more “performance review with glitter.”

Nia (our quietly brilliant operations manager ) positions herself near the buffet like a tactical genius. But when Gareth from Sales knocks the cable out of the snow machine mid-brag, the night descends into festive chaos.

  • One-woman peacekeeping forces
  • Gareth being… Gareth
  • Why quiet leaders are the ones we follow without realising

Power Move: Build Your Circle

#89 | Why AI Is Exposing the Leadership Gap and What Every Smart Leader Needs To Do Right Now To Secure Their Influence15 Jun 202600:19:01

Are you worried that AI could replace your job, or wondering what makes some people more valuable while others become easier to replace?

As AI rapidly changes the workplace, many professionals are focusing on learning new tools, earning certifications, and proving they're adaptable. But there’s a critical factor that most people overlook. The real differentiator isn't how well you use AI; it's how effectively you apply judgment. In this episode, you'll discover why some professionals are becoming more indispensable as AI adoption grows and how you can strengthen your own job security.

You'll discover:

  1. The specific parts of your role AI can automate (and the parts it simply cannot replace).
  2. Why making your judgment visible is more valuable than producing more output.
  3. A simple framework for increasing your job security by highlighting the expertise, context, and decision-making that only humans can provide.

If you want to stay relevant, valuable, and difficult to replace in an AI-powered workplace, this episode will show you exactly where to focus your attention.
