Have you ever felt like there is a dormant, creative part of you just waiting to get out? Something you buried years, or even decades ago because life got in the way? Careers, family commitments, the daily grind, all very important but it’s so easy to push our real passions to the back burner while we go about our everyday life.
Sometimes, though, life makes the big decisions for us.
My guest today spent decades in a demanding corporate career that had nothing to do with making music. He carried melodies spinning around in his head for over twenty years, but reality meant those dreams had to wait. Then, in his middle age, redundancy hit.
Instead of seeing it purely as an ending, it ignited something that had been lying dormant inside him. It gave him the permission and the time, to step into his studio, pick up his instruments, and finally give those melodies a voice. Today, he writes, plays every instrument, records, and produces entirely on his own terms.
We’re going to be talking about creativity, reinvention, and what it actually takes to unlock that latent spark inside yourself.
So I want to ask you today: What is that creative thing inside of you that’s waiting to get out?

Ben Phillips is a jazz rock studio musician who, following a 20-year career in Customer Experience Management for global companies, made the transition to a full-time career in music following redundancy in 2025. This opened the opportunity to explore his true passion for music recording and production. He has released 1 full album and 1 EP to date, with more releases to follow this year and next. He works and lives in Milton Keynes, England with his wife and 5 sons.
Stuart Ward: The Brit Who Became a Swedish Broadcasting Legend

Stuart Ward grew up on a council estate in Exeter, England, obsessed with pirate radio, chart positions, and — oddly — record labels. That obsession, plus a teenage belief that Sweden had cracked the code on a fairer society, eventually carried him across the North Sea, first as a chartered accountant, then as one of Swedish television and radio's most recognisable voices for decades.
Stuart hosted Night Flight Scandinavia and Top Gear Nordic (a name he lifted straight from John Peel's old BBC show, nothing to do with cars), interviewed everyone from Paul McCartney to Barry Humphries to Pelé, ran the Polar Music Prize — often called the Nobel Prize of music — and, in between all of it, tried and failed to build a political career in the UK Labour Party before finding his footing instead in Swedish politics. He also spent over a decade at the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok and lived in Thailand for eighteen years.
In this episode, Stuart and host Bob Wells talk about chasing a dream with zero self-confidence, what changes when you go from radio to television, the etiquette of never looking starstruck, and why curiosity — not talent — might be the real secret behind a rich life.

How much do you know about what’s going in Ukraine? Obviously we get daily news bulletins from the mainstream media which give a view on major events but what about the stuff we don't hear about? What everyday life is like for civilians? Why people from other countries volunteer either on a humanitarian basis or as a soldier? What are their backgrounds? How are they received? How do the Ukrainian people see an end to the war?
To help answer these questions and many more, I am joined by Matt Gallagher. Matt is a US Army veteran who volunteered and helped civilians at the start of the war in 2022 and then returned again in 2023 as a journalist. His experiences led him to publish his fourth novel, Daybreak which takes place in present day Ukraine and features a disillusioned American volunteering for the war and to reconnect with a woman from his past.
I found the novel very powerful as it is set in the present with a war still going on. It certainly helped me understand it from a human level.

Drawing on her own tragic family experiences Sandra hopes that the book will help teenagers navigate adolescence and feel able to talk about their emotions and what's going on inside. Studies from Emory University and University of Rochester have shown that teenagers who communicate their emotions are less likely to fall into depression and have suicidal thoughts.
Today’s guest is Stewart Hill former Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army.
On the 4th of July in 2009, Stewart led 160 men in a close combat fight against the Taliban in some of the fiercest fighting seen by UK forces in Afghanistan. Eight hours later, medics battled to save his life after shrapnel from an (IED) tore in to his brain.
Not surprisingly, he returned a different man, but, incredibly, he has converted his experiences into a catalyst for new possibilities and a fascination with how we can use our brains more effectively in the workplace or in our personal lives, which he talks about through motivational speaking and his mantra Making Lives Better
He suggests that living in the moment and exercising mindfulness—acknowledging, accepting and parking negative thoughts, is the most efficient way to do this.
I have to say in the course of this conversation like me you will be forgiven for concluding that Stewart’s eloquence and ease of talking about his subject equates to a full recovery however, as the conversation developed and I learned more about a severe brain injury the battle to overcome the injury is a constant for Stewart which he faces with courage and is a lesson for us all.
At the end of the conversation Stewart and I were conscious that there were many other subjects that we wanted to discuss such as mental health, resilience and neuroplasticity and this will make up the basis for another conversation in the near future.

For seventeen years, Joseph owned and operated The Primadonna Restaurant in McKees Rocks, PA. The Primadonna was frequently voted the best Italian restaurant in Pittsburgh, receiving glowing acclaim in local the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and City Paper as well as national publications like The New York Times, New York Daily News, and Playboy. Joseph used his marketing genius to create his own bottled Italian salad dressing sold in stores and offered a Primadonna apparel line, essentially turning supporters into walking billboards. The restaurant’s recipes have been published in many cookbooks, including critically acclaimed food critic Mike Kalina’s Pittsburgh Cookbook. In 2001, The Primadonna became known across the nation as one of the premiere Italian restaurants, earning the prestigious DiRōNA Award. In 2005, after a targeted public investigation, Joseph lost his restaurant and spent time in federal prison. His life and the lives of his family members have never been the same.
Writing a book isn't a walk in the park, as Maria and her co-author Ruthie Robbins found out. Spending many years to meticulously put together their labour of love, On the Rocks (The Primadonna Story). they faced many challenges along the way. Maria opens up about the changes they made, the feedback they received, and the cutthroat competition they faced in the book publishing world. She also gives us a generous helping of the secrets behind the unique recipes included in the book, most of which are family heirlooms or inspired by the vast menu of their restaurant.

We discuss Jason’s very own example of the use of a bedtime story which he made up and used to encourage his young daughters to fall asleep! ' Weird Bob' tells the story of a giraffe that is different from the rest of the herd. It left such an impression on his now grown up daughters, that they persuaded Jason to publish the story for other young children to enjoy!

Today's show features the legendary Gary Moat who was best known as the drummer in the famous 1980s rock band Heavy Pettin.’ The band toured alongside Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Magnum and many more.
Today Gary is the lead singer, frontman and musical creator for rock band, Burnt out Wreck. Gary talks about his lifelong passion for music, how he started playing drums, his life in Heavy Pettin' and 'Burnt Out Wreck' the band he created in 2016.
I would describe Burnt Out Wreck's music as unpretentious classic hard rock but with a raw freshness. If you haven't heard the band yet and like bands such as AC/DC listen to the 3 albums, 'Swallow' 2017, 'This is Hell' 2019 and 2022's 'Stand and Fight.' I was introduced to the band earlier this year and it didn't take me long to get to know the songs and enjoy the cool guitar riffs and subtly clever song lyrics. Enjoy the episode!
