The Solo But Not Alone 5 bundle is finally live! You can find it here: https://itch.io/b/2865/solo-but-not-alone-5

Here are a couple of bonus links for this week. First off, here's a link to YouTuber RamsesThePigeon's video about aluminum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob-PiPJBHdc

And here's an article talking about bathtub gin and why it was (potentially) really bad for you. Turns out James was right about the methyl alcohol making you go blind; what I was thinking of was tri-ortho-cresyl phosphate, which can cause partial paralysis or death.

This week, we're taking a step back to discuss where we see the podcast now, four years in, and what we're planning to do in the future. Join us as we talk about why we're stepping away from making content specifically geared towards D&D, what we're going to do instead, and how we aim to get from Point A to Point B.

The Solo But Not Alone 5 bundle is finally live! We got word from Cat that the bundle went live shortly before this episode released. Here is the new, functional link to find it: https://itch.io/b/2865/solo-but-not-alone-5

This week, we welcome back Michael Ross from The RPG Academy and Rob Hilferty from Worldbuild With Us to play Michael's Ennie-nominated game Action 12 Cinema to celebrate our podcast's fourth anniversary. Join us for the second part of our play session, where we complete the Production Phase of the game, engaging in bad B-movie hijinks to discover the identity of the leader of the Vampires gang and the location of the Last Operational Waffle House (which, for some reason, is in Neo New York City).

This is the second part of a two-part game. Please be sure to go back and listen to last week's episode "Recipe for Disaster" to catch the Pre-Production Phase, where we establish characters, world, and plot, or you might be lost when the game starts.

You can find Michael and his podcast over at therpgacademy.com, and copies of Action 12 Cinema at https://therpgacademy.com/action-12-cinema/. You can also find the portal to order tickets for AcadeCon, which will be November 8-10 in Dayton, Ohio, on the website.

Live from the Internet - Undercommon Taste Episode 6401 Dec 202101:15:19

This week, we went live on Twitch! Following the Thanksgiving holiday, we decided to do something with a little less prep, so we had our inaugural Twitch livestream. Join us as we discuss the State of the Podcast (TM) and upcoming projects, don our foil hats for a bit of D&D lore conspiracy, and do a Monster Mashup with just the two of us, which results in something completely Looney.

We also had some technical difficulties at the beginning of our stream, requiring us to re-record the intro. Many thanks to Rob over at Worldbuild With Us (worldbuildwithus.com) for helping us troubleshoot our issues with OBS - he's a friend of the show for certain, and you should totally go check out their podcast!

We have two sponsors for this week's episode - Of Mice and Men and Monsters (@OMAMAMshow) and Tale of the Manticore (@ManticoreTale). I've been enjoying both shows, so you should check them out for something a little bit different.

I Got Better, part 2 - Undercommon Taste Episode 6324 Nov 202101:37:20

This week, we dive back into the Heroic Domains of Ysgard to discuss the details of the individual layers of the Plane. It's a long one this week, as we touch on some of the stories from Norse mythology that influence the mechanics of Ysgard, such as why the petitioners revive each day at dawn, or how Odin got his eight-legged rainbow horse, Sleipnir. We also discuss a couple of the things we would change, from the elves of Alfheim to Merratet, the realm of the Egyptian/Mulhorandi goddess Bast.

We will be having our channel's inaugural Twitch stream on Sunday, November 28th, starting at 9:00 PM Eastern, where we will just have a live Q&A, and maybe create some homebrewed stuff. Drop by to say hi, and submit any questions you may have, or homebrew you'd like reviewed, to either our email or Twitter.

This week's episode has been sponsored by Of Mice and Men and Monsters, and actual play podcast. You can find them on Twitter at @OMAMAMshow.

This week, we begin our journey into the Heroic Domains of Ysgard, the Plane of neutral-good chaos, where warriors fight, die, and are reborn at dawn in an eternal cycle. Join us as we discuss the home of the Norse pantheon - and the other denizens that come with them - as well as the natural interplanar highway that is Yggdrasil the World Ash, and a pair of gods that seem to have been...misplaced.

We are preparing for a Q&A, and our inaugural appearance on our Twitch channel! If you have questions you would like to ask, including advice or feedback on homebrew, please send them to us as a direct message through our Twitter account, or email them to us at undercommontaste@gmail.com.

Uncanny Valley - Episode 14721 Aug 202401:05:30

This week, we're continuing our look at the rules changes for the D&D 5e 2024 ruleset. Join us as we talk about the changes to spellcasting, weapon properties, and - despite our best efforts - as many classes as we can manage in the time allowed.

As mentioned in the episode, one of the sources we're using to get our information about the new 2024 ruleset is the YouTube channel Treantmonk's Temple. You can find this channel at youtube.com/treantmonkstemple.

In our next episode, we will be celebrating our 4th podcast anniversary! We will be joined by friends of the show Michael Ross (The RPG Academy) and Rob Hilferty (Worldbuild With Us) to play Michael's Ennie-award nominated game Action 12 Cinema. This game will be split across two episodes over two weeks. It was a blast to play with them, so we hope you'll enjoy the game, too.

This week, we finish up our trek through the Inner Planes, visiting the Paraelemental Planes of Ice, Smoke, Magma, and Ooze, and talking about notable landmarks and denizens there. We also spend too little time talking about the Elemental Chaos (because it doesn't really fit into the Great Wheel cosmology), and give a brief overview of the Quasielemental Planes.

We begin our tour of the Inner Planes this week, discussing the Elemental Planes of Fire and Water. This week, we shift our planar discussion to the transitive planes: the Ethereal and Astral. We discuss how they work, what hazards you might find on them, how you might get to them without 7th-level spells, and some adventure hooks if you want to linger for a while.

We also geek out over Astral Dreadnaughts for a bit.

Resistance is Overrated - An Interview with u/MothProphet - Undercommon Taste Episode 3321 Apr 202100:58:40

This week, we invite Reddit creator Elliot (u/MothProphet) on to discuss the topic addressed in the bulk of his Reddit post An Exploration into 5e's Damage Types, in a little under 6000 words. We talk about the differences between devils and demons, why beasts don't like loud noises, and returning to a time when Cold Iron meant something to the fey. Topping it all off, we have the return of the Weird Bug Generator, where the dice help us create an oversized druid grove parasite.

Doom and Gloom - Undercommon Taste Episode 3214 Apr 202101:06:42

This week, we dive back into our planar travels with a journey to the Shadowfell, discussing what you might find there and how you can get your players through into the Material Plane's dark echo without resorting to 7th-level spells.

A content warning for this week's episode: the Shadowfell is a gloomy and depressing place. As such, any discussion going in depth in the Shadowfell will inevitably turn to topics that may negatively affect some people, especially those with PTSD or depressive conditions.

This week, we are joined by Rob, Chris, and Daniel from the Worldbuild With Us podcast to build a scenario in the world we helped design on their podcast last week. Faerie Tales and Secret Doors - Undercommon Taste Episode 3031 Mar 202101:17:41

This week, we start our in-depth tour of the planes by visiting the Feywild, talking about prominent locations within, and how to get there. We also spend no small amount of time discussing how to utilize the Feywild in your home game, and which classes we feel would benefit most from having a jaunt into the Feywild.

This episode ran a bit longer than normal, and we apologize for the audio quality dropping out in some spots. This is the last episode we are recording using our old method (using OBS to record over Discord), so hopefully our new method will result in more uniform, clearer audio in the future.

Consult the Oracle - Undercommon Taste Episode 2417 Feb 202101:00:06

This week, we begin our multi-part series where we dive into the 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide to find lesser known rules to highlight and discuss. This first episode covers the rules for social encounters, honor and sanity, and madness.

Content Warning: We spend most of the last 20 minutes of the episode covering the madness rules, wherein we discuss topics of mental health, specifically different forms of mental illness. We tried to remain as respectful of the topic as possible, but there may be elements of the conversation which could prove problematic to listeners.

The Way of the Swallow, a fighting style which focuses on utilizing thrown weapons, and

The Way of the Obsidian Fist, a tradition which draws upon the power of elemental earth to fortify the monk.
