Gideon Levy: A Rare Israeli Journalist Opposed To 'The Killing Of Gaza'25 oct. 202400:41:34

Host Kevin Gosztola welcomes Israeli journalist Gideon Levy to the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast to discuss his new book from Verso, "The Killing Of Gaza: Reports On A Catastrophe" (available here).

He is a distinguished and well-known dissenting voice in Israeli media. During the conversation, he describes how there are very few journalists who show interest in the ongoing war in Gaza.

Gideon also addresses attacks on press freedom within Israel, such as the shutdown of Al Jazeera. He recalls how he was banned from a popular liberal-leaning current affairs program because he said Israel's treatment of Palestinian prisoners is as bad as Hamas' treatment of Israeli captives—or worse.

US-Israel's War On Gaza Expands To Lebanon (w/ Matthew Hoh)06 oct. 202400:59:56

Matthew Hoh, a a former United States Marine, a former State Department official who resigned in protest against the Afghanistan War, and the associate director for the Eisenhower Media Network, returns to the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast to discuss the latest terrifying developments in the Middle East. We begin with clips from the conversation that Rania Khalek had with CODEPINK about Israel's war on Lebanon. Rania started this show with host Kevin Gosztola back in 2014, and she's a longtime journalist based in Beirut. Matthew and Kevin also break down the death and destruction of the past week with a focus on the artillery that President Joe Biden's administration has supplied to Israel over the past year. *For the full interview, become a patron at Patreon.com/UnauthorizedDisclosure or subscribe to the show at TheDissenter.org

A Year Of War In Gaza (w/ Norman Solomon)24 sept. 202400:50:06

Norman Solomon, co-founder of RootsAction.org, returns to the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast to talk about the afterword for his book "War Made Invisible: How America Hides The Human Toll Of Its Military Machine," which is now available in paperback.
The book is a follow-up to his 2005 book "War Made Easy: How Presidents And Pundits Keep Spinning Us To Death."

In 2023, Norman discussed the book on the podcast. But it was released before Israel launched its genocidal war on Palestinians in Gaza. We spend the hour discussing how the US government has worked to make US involvement in the war invisible.

Norman responds to Israel blowing up pagers in Lebanon—twice. This was an act of terror that killed dozens and wounded thousands of civilians. The explosions occurred far away from any battlefield. It was hardly "precise" warfare.

Later in the show, Norman briefly departs from the topic of the war on Gaza to address Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and other U.S. officials granting Ukraine permission to launch deadly military strikes deep inside Russia with arms from the U.S. or NATO.

Andy discusses the formation of Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws and why the coalition is marching against the DNC. He also addresses the rich history of Chicago police attacking protesters and trampling on people's First Amendment rights.

And Andy highlights several additional demonstrations that will take place during the DNC and how the city, even under progressive Mayor Brandon Johnson, frustrated requests for march permits.

Victory For Prison Phone Justice: FCC Caps Prison Phone Call Rates (w/ Wanda Bertram)30 juil. 202400:38:55

The movement for fair and equitable policies in United States jails and prisons notched a major victory a little more than a week ago: prison and jail calling rates were cut dramatically by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Joining the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast to discuss this victory is Wanda Bertram, a communications strategist for the Prison Policy Initiative. Wanda describes this development as the product of a "decades-long fight for prison and jail communication justice." Wanda outlines the price caps, how something called "ancillary fees" were eliminated, and how most corporate kickbacks were banned as a result of the FCC's order. Later in the episode, Wanda talks about the increased use of prison tablets and the way that jail or prison administrators seize upon this technology to justify doing away with a range of services for detainees or prisoners.

Two US Air Force Members Speak Out Against the War On Gaza25 juil. 202400:48:56

On this week's edition of the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast, host Kevin Gosztola talks with Juan Betancourt and Larry Hebert, who are both United States Air Force members who applied to become "conscientious objectors." Juan and Larry were moved to apply for "conscientious objector" status when they observed the Israeli military's genocidal violence against Palestinians in Gaza. They discuss becoming a part of a long tradition of U.S. military resistance and dissent. Both interviews were recorded before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington to address the U.S. Congress and meet with officials in President Joe Biden's administration. Given Biden and the wider U.S. government's unwavering support for the genocidal violence against Palestinians, their opposition is courageous and inspiring.

War Drags On In Ukraine As State Department-Linked Group Blacklists Antiwar Opponents (w/ Dave DeCamp)18 juin 202400:38:24

This week, Dave DeCamp, the news editor for Antiwar.com and host of the daily podcast "Antiwar News", appears on "Unauthorized Disclosure" to discuss the latest in the war in Ukraine and a list that a United States State Department-linked group put together, which smeared Antiwar News and hundreds of foreign policy experts, politicians, journalists, and media organizations. David and Kevin describe the absurd nature of this list and particularly how it blames nearly 400 individuals and groups for stalling U.S. military aid to Ukraine. They additionally ask, why did this group put out a list now? President Joe Biden's administration has fueled escalations in the war by authorizing Ukraine to launch attacks against targets inside Russia with U.S. weapons. Given recent developments—and especially because groups like this State Department-linked NGO don't want us to have this conversation, Dave and Kevin spend the rest of the episode discussing what is at stake as the war drags on.

David Beito On FDR's Concentration Camps, Censorship, and Mass Surveillance10 juin 202400:46:22

On this week's podcast episode, David Beito, the author of The New Deal's War on the Bill of Rights: FDR's Concentration Camps, Censorship, and Mass Surveillance, joined the show to discuss his book. David is a history professor at the University of Alabama, and he spent 15 years researching and compiling archival materials for this thorough examination of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's attacks on civil liberties. During the interview, David describes how historical accounts tend to downplay the racism that drove FDR to roundup Japanese Americans during World War II and put them in camps. He articulates the ends-justify-the-means approach that FDR and his administration had to the New Deal, which helped officials justify trampling rights to privacy and freedom of expression. ***NOTE*** This is the free edition of the episode. Mohamed covered the latest Assange hearing at the British High Court of Justice for The Dissenter—another reason why it made sense to offer him a platform to share his reporting and analysis of what happened.

During the episode, Mohamed breaks down the specific legal issues that were at issue and will be part of Assange's limited but important appeal. A particular problem for the United States government is the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Mohamed and Kevin highlight why this appeal could finally be an opening for defeating the U.S. government's push to extradite Assange and put a journalist on trial.

No Peace For US Officials Who Back Israel's Genocide (w/ Ann Wright & Medea Benjamin22 mai 202400:59:37

In this free edition of the "Unauthorized Disclosure" weekly podcast, Kevin Gosztola talks with CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright, a retired Army colonel and former State Department diplomat. Medea discusses CODEPINK's actions on Capitol Hill against U.S. support for Israel's war on Gaza. Ann offers an update on efforts to break the siege with the Freedom Flotilla. Both Medea and Ann respond to the propaganda coming from President Joe Biden's administration that justifies genocidal violence as well as the climate of repression that is intensifying daily. In particular, CODEPINK and other U.S.-based nonprofits face a bill in Congress that would potentially result in their organizations being labeled "terrorism supporters" if passed.

Retaliation Against Media Workers In The War On Gaza: Interview With Khawla Nakua15 mai 202400:43:48

For this episode of "Unauthorized Disclosure," Kevin Gosztola speaks with Khawla Nakua, an organizer with the National Writers Union (NWU) and a criminal justice reporter.
Nakua joins the show to discuss a report from NWU called "Red Lines: retaliation in the media industry during the war on Gaza."
The NWU "tracked 44 cases of retaliation that impacted more than 100 media workers, who are disproportionately people of color," according to the report. Retaliation has particularly impacted media workers of Middle Eastern or North African descent.
Nakua describes the different types of retaliation that media workers have endured during Israel's assault on Gaza and addresses the intense climate of censorship. Various examples of retaliation mentioned in the report are highlighted throughout the conversation.

Cuban Journalist Liz Oliva Fernández: How Biden Embraced Trump's War On Cuba06 mai 202400:37:56

Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola interview Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández about two documentaries that cover United States policy toward Cuba. Liz, who worked with Belly of the Beast on the films, obtained a visa to travel to the U.S. and confront the very politicians, who are behind the embargo and other measures that disproportionately impact Black Cubans. She spent time in Washington, D.C., and New Jersey, where she spoke to a number of everyday Americans about their attitudes toward Cuba. The first film, "Hardliner on the Hudson," premieres on May 13. It covers corrupt Senator Bob Menendez and his instrumental role in shaping the U.S. agenda against Cuba. The second film, "Uphill on the Hill," examines the "political interests" that have led President Joe Biden to "embrace Trump's economic war on Cuba." It premieres on May 20. For this week's episode of the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast, Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola are joined by human rights and environmental attorney Steven Donziger.
Steven was the target of a political case sponsored by Chevron. The super-major oil corporation hijacked the judiciary to stop Steven from standing up for the indigenous people of Ecuador, who had their land destroyed by Chevron.

Later in the episode, Steven addresses the use of a "domestic terrorism" law in Georgia to try and stop the #StopCopCity protest against the construction of a police compound that would destroy forested land. The Bloodshed In Sudan (Guest: Eugene Puryear)24 avr. 202300:55:09

Eugene Puryear, host on BreakThrough News, joins Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola to discuss the violence that has unfolded this past week in Sudan.
Fighting has escalated between General Abdel Fattah Burhan and Sudan's military and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti) and a paramilitary force known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
During the conversation, Eugene describes who the players are and how the people of Sudan are caught in between their jostling for power. He also addresses the widespread claim that somehow Russia must be behind the skirmishes.
Later, Kevin asks Eugene and Rania to comment on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and their partnership with the Sesame Workshop on programming for children in Iraq. Samantha Power, a warmonger and poser for human rights who leads USAID, characterized the project in a very nauseating way.
The show concludes with Eugene reacting to the U.S. Justice Department indicting Chairman Omali Yeshitela of the African People's Socialist Party and at least two other members affiliated with the Black liberation group. In 2022, the FBI targeted them in raids.
Yeshitela spoke at an antiwar rally in Washington, D.C., on the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The demonstration, which was livestreamed by BreakThrough News, also called for diplomatic negotiations instead of further escalation in the war in Ukraine.

Kari Lydersen, a Chicago-based reporter, author, and journalist instructor, joins the Unauthorized Disclosure podcast to discuss her feature story for In These Times, "The Case For Nationalizing the Railroads."

Lydersen has covered labor in Chicago and throughout the United States for many years. In this interview, she shares the experiences of railroad workers who united around a strike to help them win paid sick days in their contract. But President Joe Biden sided with the railroad barons and helped corporate executives stop the strike.  Profit margins for the major railroad companies are staggering.

Later, Lydersen highlights the four corporations that control US railroads. She describes some of the health and safety struggles that railroad workers deal with daily. She talks about why we see around 1,700 train derailments in any given year. She also addresses what nationalization of the US railroad system might look like and also why so many shipments of goods are transported by trucks than trains, even though trains are more efficient.

Unauthorized Disclosure: US-Backed Coup Regime In Peru (w/ Ollie Vargas)20 févr. 202300:42:07

This is an edited version. For full episodes, subscribe to the podcast at TheDissenter.org.

Ollie Vargas, a contributor to Kawsachun News and co-host of Latin America Review, returns to the Unauthorized Disclosure podcast to discuss the latest developments in Peru.

Back in 2022, a right-wing coup removed Peru President Pedro Castillo from power. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, who had been his vice president. Boluarte has chosen to serve the interests of the oligarchy over indigenous and working class people the country.

As part of our conversation, Ollie provides an overview of the violence and repression that Boluarte's US-backed regime has inflicted upon Peruvians in the past months.

General strikes have unfolded for several weeks. He offers a recap of this resistance. Ollie addresses the US role in propping up the government, and he describes what grassroots groups have learned as they reflect on what they must do when they regain power in order to prevent a coup from happening again.

High Stakes Of Perpetuating War In Ukraine (with Medea Benjamin & Ann Wright)06 févr. 202300:54:46

Medea Benjamin, CODEPINK co-founder and co-author of War In Ukraine: Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict, and Ann Wright, a CODEPINK member, retired Army colonel, and former State Department diplomat, join “Unauthorized Disclosure” hosts Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola to discuss the high stakes of a protracted conflict in Ukraine.

Initially, President Joe Biden said the United States would not ship tank to Ukraine. That line was crossed, and now Ukraine would like fighter jets. Both Medea and Ann address the issue of escalating with more and more weapons and military equipment and crossing red lines that are drawn by officials.

Medea draws from her experience in antiwar organizing to share how difficult it has been to advocate for a diplomatic settlement and mobilize Americans to oppose fueling this war.

Later in the conversation, Ann, who lives in Hawaii, responds to the prevalent idea that the conflict in Ukraine against Russia has been a test run for a war over Taiwan against China. Hawaii is a US military launchpad for Asia-Pacific exercises and actions intended to curtail China’s influence in the region.

The Chinese “spy balloon” incident shows just how rapidly a scenario could develop that resulted in a devastating conflict.

US-Backed 'Hybrid Warfare' Against Peru, Argentina (With Guest Ben Norton)19 déc. 202201:04:05

Please enjoy free access to a full and uncut episode of the Unauthorized Disclosure weekly podcast typically available for only subscribers.

Ben Norton, editor for Multipolarista, returns to the podcast to discuss the United States-backed coups and lawfare in Peru and Argentina. Peru President Pedro Castillo, who came from a background as an indigenous peasant, was removed from power by the right-wing legislature and arrested. A show trial was held, and he has been sentenced to 18 months of "preventative detention."

In Argentina, Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was barred by the judiciary from running for president again. The political charge against her bears a lot of similarity to the political charge that was leveled by the right-wing in Brazil against President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Ben challenges several misconceptions about Castillo and the coup in Peru while also recounting events that led up to the third impeachment against him that created the conditions for his removal. He also highlights how the US ambassador to Peru was in the CIA. While providing an overview of recent events in Argentina, Ben details the extent to which oligarchs in the country hold influence over the judiciary.

Italian Journalist Stefania Maurizi On Her Book, 'Secret Power: WikiLeaks And Its Enemies'05 déc. 202200:48:34

NOTE: This interview was not produced as part of the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast, but it is shared here to help give Stefania and her book some additional exposure.

Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi partnered with WikiLeaks and covered military reports on the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars and US diplomatic cables related to Italy and the Vatican. She met WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange multiple times. She saw firsthand how WikiLeaks worked on publications, even as the United States government ramped up its efforts to target and suppress the media organization.

Asa Winstanley On "Labour Files" And What Unprecedented Leak Revealed16 oct. 202200:59:59

Asa Winstanley, associate editor for Electronic Intifada and co-host of the website's podcast, appeared on "Unauthorized Disclosure" to discuss The Labour Files, a bombshell documentary series from Al Jazeera English based on an unprecedented leak of files from within the UK's Labour Party.

Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola pay particular attention to the second part of the series that delves into the manner in which Labour Party officials manufactured an "antisemitism crisis" and weaponized the issue to purge the party of left-leaning members, including Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and Jewish members who oppose Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.

The documentary series that outlines clear corruption has been virtually ignored by the British establishment media. The Labour Party is hoping the series just fades away. By highlighting a few clips and highlighting some of the damning revelations in the Labour Files, we are doing what little we can do to challenge the media blackout.

Finally, Kevin shares some clips from a recent Callin episode that he recorded, where he explored the question of what we all think is the left. Rania responds and adds her own insights.

Alan MacLeod On The Spies Curating What You See On Social Media 24 août 202200:50:13

On this week’s “Unauthorized Disclosure” episode, Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola are joined by journalist and MintPress News senior staff writer Alan MacLeod.

Alan has spent the past few months digging through LinkedIn profiles to expose the revolving door between United States security agencies (CIA, FBI, etc) and social media companies. In particular, his reporting calls attention to the sheer number of people from the CIA who are at Facebook, including one notable former agent who is developing content moderation policies for the corporation.

Facebook, as Alan points out, is “the most important news source around the world. Around 3 billion use Facebook every month for news, which means that something like forty percent of the world’s population is dependent on their news feeds. And that gives Facebook an enormous amount of leverage and influence.”

We also asked Alan to break down his coverage of the so-called fact checking organizations that Facebook relies upon, particularly to moderate content related to the war in Ukraine, and how most of them receive direct funding from the US government.
