The theme of Season 4 (happy hour and coffee date conversations) continued with this week’s guest, Sarah Bernard. After she had her three children, Sarah wanted more flexibility in her career and made the decision to leave her corporate job and venture into entrepreneurship. Sarah is now a Luxury Home Realtor & Second Home Specialist. Jill Devine and Sarah discussed the pivot she made from the corporate world to being your own boss.
Amid a pandemic, Sarah has been able to connect people to Innsbrook Resort, located in Innsbrook, Missouri, a gated resort community just 1 hour from Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis, 75 minutes from Columbia, Missouri, and 3 hours from Kansas City. Sarah has two sons and one daughter. All three children live outside the St. Louis area. One son is in college and her other son and daughter are in the early stages of their careers. Jill and Sarah talked about the dynamics of having older children and what it’s like having all three children living in different states. Sarah said despite them living many miles away, she feels very connected with them and she believes technology has made it easier to stay in touch. She said they are all very close and she’s excited to see them leading their own lives. She told Jill she’s careful not to judge her children, but to let them make their own decisions and make their own mistakes.
When she isn’t at the office, Sara hosts “The Issues” on STL TV and she’s active in the St. Louis art district.

Jen Cowan, A.K.A. And Hattie Makes Three, joined Jill Devine this week on the podcast. This was technically the second conversation Jill had with Jen. Jill explained what happened to the missing audio in the episode.
If you aren’t familiar with Jen, she loves to share things her family loves and places they go. Her goal is to help you create memories for your family. She is always searching for how she can make your life easier; is there a tip she can provide, a trick, or something you can buy that might make life easier.
Jill noticed Jen on social media because she’s so real. You notice so many digital content creators that hide behind the filters and only put the “good” times on social media. Jen is the opposite of that. She won’t wear makeup in some situations, and she embraces being a plus-size blogger. She suffers from PCOS and has a very hard time losing weight:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.
Jen did admit when she is out in public with other bloggers, she doesn’t feel like she fits in. She said she doesn’t feel like she fits the “typical” blogger mold. To Jen, that mold means pretty, skinny, and blonde. Another reminder, you never know how a person is feeling. She has insecurities just like the rest of us and again, that’s why Jill started following her because she is so real.

Hey Jill! I’m new to your podcast and binge listening to them. Love them!! I wanted to put a bug in your ear about a local mom that is the new rage on Instagram. Her handle is @the_car_mom. She and her family are in car sales. She does reviews on vehicles for moms to let you know what car seats fit good in vehicles, the luggage room and tells you her personal opinion about the bells & whistles of the vehicles. She is in the St. Louis area. I thought you both could be very useful for each other. I know she is about ready to have a baby, but I bet she would love to be a guest!
Kelly Suntrup Stumpe, A.K.A., The Car Mom, joined Jill on this week’s episode. Before Kelly and Jill talked about how The Car Mom was created, they talked briefly about the dynamics between siblings and what it’s like to have multiple children. Kelly is 38 weeks pregnant with her second child, a baby girl, and her first born is a boy and he’s 16-months old.
The Suntrup Automotive Group family have been servicing and selling cars since 1957 for the St Louis area. Kelly is third generation of the Suntrup family. She started selling cars right out of college and when she became a mom, being in the car business was extremely difficult because of the hours. She cut back her hours to work part-time and she started thinking about how difficult it is for moms to buy a vehicle, taking into consideration moms need to bring their car seats and strollers to the dealership to make sure they would fit in the vehicle she was considering purchasing. Kelly wanted to streamline the process for busy moms. She enjoys breaking down the car buying process, how to get a good deal, and how to not get taken advantage of as a mom, but more importantly a woman. All of this led to the creation of The Car Mom.

In previous episodes, Jill Devine has talked about how she’s growing her faith. She started attending Messiah Lutheran (located in a suburb outside of St. Louis, Missouri) when she was pregnant with her oldest daughter. One Sunday morning at church, Jill noticed a woman singing on stage. The woman had a tattoo on her wrist, and it caught Jill’s eye because Jill had been thinking about getting a tattoo on her wrist as well, but for some reason Jill kept thinking the visible tattoo would be frowned upon by Christians.
Fast forward, randomly, the woman on stage started following Jill on Instagram and now they are friends. The woman’s name is Laura Fleetwood and she created Seeking The Still after she was taken down by depression and anxiety at the age of 37. Jill and Laura talked about Laura’s journey and the process towards healing. While she still suffers with depression and anxiety, she is more equipped to handle it now than before.
In the episode, Jill also asked Laura a lot questions about Christianity/Faith and why Jill would even think Christians would frown upon visible tattoos. Laura reminded Jill that Jesus is for everyone … no matter what you look like, no matter what music you like, no matter what! Laura said she has noticed the church has been typically known for what the church is against and not what the church is for. Laura would like to spread more awareness about what the church is for so more people know they are welcome, no matter what.

She's an amazing photographer who ran a photog business while going through a difficult time of infertility (in-between the 13-year-old and 4-year-old she had several miscarriages and was certain she would never conceive again). She used her photography business as a way to help herself grieve the realization (or so she thought) of never having more children.

Welcome to Emmy Lou Styles! I’m Emily, a work from home wife + mom of two kids living in the suburbs of Saint Louis, MO. I started this blog in the summer of 2017 (side note – I had another blog before this one from 2011-2013) to use as a virtual journey of my life, highlighting everything from the ups and downs of motherhood, style, beauty, travel, and beyond. The name “Emmy Lou Styles” is a combination of a nickname friends and family have for me +part of my middle name (Louise)…and well, in the words of Nelly, I’m from the “Lou” and I’m proud.
When I started, I was working full time in the ecommerce space for a large corporate shoe company. As my blog grew, so did my passion for creating, along with social media as a business began to take over. My husband and I talked at length about how I could take the leap from corporate marketing to self-employment, and I’m happy to say I officially made the switch in March 2019.
Emily gave some great advice on how to handle social media and digital content as a business owner, as well as how to handle it personally. Her advice, “utilize that mute button”. The ladies also had a great discussion about perceptions made by others when it comes to women (who also happen to be mothers) working from inside their homes.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Now more than ever, the discussion surrounding suicide prevention and mental illness must be a priority.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. We use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention. NAMI is here to help.
This week’s guest is Gina Schuster. She lost her husband, Corey Schuster, to suicide. Jill Devine went to middle and high school with both Gina and Corey, so this conversation was very special to Jill. She was incredibly honored that Gina was willing and ready to share Corey’s story.
In the episode, Gina opened up to Jill about the ongoing struggles Corey dealt with and the different treatments he tried up until his death. Corey and Gina have three children: Evan (13), Tessa (11), and Mason (8). In 2011, Corey was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Both Corey and Gina agreed they wanted the kids to know about his diagnosis because of the ups and downs Corey faced regularly.
Gina provided some resources for those who are suffering from mental illness, suicide loss survivors, and family activities to help ease the pain.

Jill Devine took some time over the last couple of weeks to reflect on Seasons 1, 2, & 3 and think about what she loved and what she felt was missing from those Seasons. That reflection led to some changes for Season 4.

Fast forward, she ended up having 2 boys back to back all the while FINALLY going through therapy for sexual abuse that happened to her as a child. You might be thinking, why would I tell you this? Well, she started a social media/photography campaign to erase the stigma around sexual abuse. The campaign is called Project Ember 2020, you can find it on Facebook. Jenn is a killer mom of 3 sweet, crazy, loud and adventures kiddos! She manages all three (under the age of 7) most days on her very own. Her hubby travels in and out of town and you’ll never hear her complain about a single thing. Since March we had both been working from home while also keeping a 3 year old safe and (relatively) content. While we identified the privilege of having that option, it was still stressful navigating all of it with an immuno-compromised daughter.
Now that classes are back in session, Robyn is working extra hard. She's a clinical nursing instructor at Maryville University and took on a behavioral health class (that she's never taught) this semester to help with the transition to online many schools are taking. She is typically talking to herself about how she can make things easier for her students without sacrificing quality. I am also in classes, so a few nights a week she solo-parents after work so I can focus on my own schooling.
