Joel Dry and Melissa Downes (9News Queensland)16 Aug 202500:35:20

A New Era for 9News Queensland

9News Queensland is turning the page on an exciting new chapter following the retirement of Andrew “Lofty” Lofthouse earlier this year. Joining Melissa Downes at the 6.00pm desk is highly respected journalist Joel Dry — a familiar face to viewers and a trusted storyteller whose career spans natural disasters, Olympic Games, and the halls of Parliament House in Canberra.

In this episode of TV Central: One on One, host Aaron Ryan sits down with Melissa and Joel to talk about the fresh dynamic ahead, their careers, and what Queensland audiences can expect from the new-look bulletin.

Here’s what you’ll hear in the episode:

  • Joel’s return to Nine — his early days in Adelaide, move to Brisbane, years in Canberra covering federal politics, and what it means to be back in Queensland news.
  • Lessons from the field — from bushfires to the Olympics, the moments that shaped Joel’s reporting style and approach to news.
  • Melissa’s reflections — two decades at Nine, the qualities that make a strong news desk partnership, and her thoughts on Joel’s style.
  • The new on-air pairing — how the two presenters first met, their early professional interactions, and the energy they hope to bring to the 6.00pm bulletin.
  • Connecting with Queensland audiences — how they balance hard-hitting journalism with warmth and trust, and ensure their coverage speaks to metro and regional viewers alike.
  • Personal touches — Joel reuniting in the same newsroom with his wife, Nine Europe Correspondent Jessica Milward, plus their favourite Queensland places to unwind.
  • Quickfire wrap-up — their first jobs in media, dream stories to cover, and personal messages to viewers as they begin this new chapter.

🎙 Episode highlight: Joel’s first bulletin as weeknight co-presenter airs Monday 18 August on Nine and 9Now.

Dan Monaghan (Senior Vice President of Programming and Content at Paramount ANZ)17 Apr 202500:30:47

Over the past few months, Paramount has been making waves across the Australian media landscape—reshaping how news and entertainment are delivered to viewers nationwide.

Network 10, a key pillar of the Paramount portfolio, has taken bold steps to solidify its position, from expanding its regional reach to ramping up its programming slate and strengthening its news offering.

The network recently acquired regional TV assets from Southern Cross Austereo, increasing its presence in Southern New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. And they’re not done yet—with a proposed acquisition of assets from WIN Television in Northern New South Wales currently under review. All this points to a clear strategy: deeper regional engagement and broader national reach.

At a time when other broadcasters are scaling back, 10 is investing. It has launched three new news bulletins—10 News First: Lunchtime, Afternoon, and Late News—giving Australians more access to breaking stories throughout the day.

On the entertainment front, 2025 has launched with major momentum. From reality juggernauts like I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here and Australian Survivor: Brains vs Brawn, to fresh comedy (Taskmaster Australia) and fan-favourites like Gogglebox, 10 has delivered a strong, varied lineup. The highly anticipated Sam Pang Tonight is now on air—bringing something uniquely Australian to the late-night talk space.

Joining me to unpack all of this and more is Dan Monaghan, Senior Vice President of Programming and Content at Paramount ANZ.

In this episode, we’ll dive into:

  • Why 10 is expanding its news division—with new bulletins, while competitors are cutting back

Luke Arnold (Scrublands: Silver)12 Apr 202500:19:47

With the highly anticipated second season of Scrublands premiering on Stan April 17, we’re joined by one of Australia's most compelling actors, Luke Arnold, for a deep dive into the new chapter of this critically acclaimed series.

Titled Scrublands: Silver, the new season continues the journey of investigative journalist Martin Scarsden, played with nuance and depth by Arnold. After the first season’s stunning debut on Stan in November 2023—and its successful run on the Nine Network, reaching over 1.5 million viewers—this next instalment brings a more intimate and emotionally charged mystery to the forefront.

Luke Arnold, whose resume spans roles as Michael Hutchence (INXS: Never Tear Us Apart), John Silver (Black Sails), and a string of standout performances both in Australia and abroad, joins Aaron Ryan at TV Central to unpack the evolution of Scrublands, his career, and the man behind the roles.

🔹 In this episode, we chat about:

  • What initially drew Luke to Scrublands: was it the script, the cast, or those breathtaking rural landscapes?
  • How Scrublands: Silver dives deeper into Martin’s past with childhood flashbacks and emotional stakes
  • The challenges and rewards of playing such a layered, conflicted character
  • A spoiler-free tease of what viewers can expect in Season 2
  • Working alongside iconic Australian actors like Debra Lawrence, Tasma Walton, and Luke Carroll

  • How the Australian setting enhances the series’ tone and visual storytelling
  • Luke’s life journey across the country—Adelaide to Sydney, QLD to WAAPA—and how that shaped his identity
  • Is Luke selective with his roles, or just lucky? Reflecting on Black Sails, The End, and INXS
  • Dream roles and creative goals still on the horizon
  • A humorous nod to a live-action Mighty Morphin Power Rangers... maybe?
  • A fascinating family tale: the story of his great-great-grandmother, Jane or Jean
  • Insights from an SMH interview about the strong women in Luke’s life, and the zigzag paths people take
  • A candid conversation about public perception vs. personal truth—who is the real Luke Arnold?
  • Misconceptions people have about him—and what they often get wrong
  • How acting has shaped his understanding of relationships and emotional complexity
  • Personal growth: what Luke is still working on within himself
  • His passions beyond acting: writing, creativity, and a unique TikTok habit involving pajamas and literature
  • Upcoming projects outside of Scrublands: Silver
