| EP. 403: Power of Presence & Visualization | Cody D'Acquisto | 28 Aug 2024 | 02:17:18 | |
Hey gang - In this episode, I sit down with Cody to talk about staying sharp, all while gearing up for the upcoming hunting season. We dive into our favorite equipment—from bows and arrows to broad heads—and Cody shares his excitement about his new micro longbow and its compact benefits. We both stress the importance of finding gear that fits well and builds confidence out in the field.
But it’s not just about the gear. Cody and I explore what it means to truly be present during a hunt, discussing how technology can sometimes pull us away from the experience. We emphasize the value of stripping away distractions to connect deeply with nature and enjoy the challenge of the hunt. We also touch on the pressures of the hunting industry and remind ourselves to focus on the essence of hunting itself. From understanding deer behavior and honing our strategies to the importance of visualization and thinking outside the box, this conversation is packed with insights.

| EP. 297: Stick Bow State Record | Arkansas Giant | 17 Aug 2022 | 01:23:13 | |
Today I'm joined by Johnathan Moreland from Arkansas. Johnathan is a die hard traditional bowhunter who has put some hammers on his wall...from public, to permission pieces, to private, he is a woodsman thru and thru. His quest for a stick-bow state record was something of a once in a life-time experience (and maybe took years off his life)...the proof is in the video! And what sealed that deers fate, was observing him go back to his bed. Then, to up the stakes the following year, he kills a hammer with a self bow (that he made himself...naturally). I hope you all dig the conversation as much as I did - thanks for listening!

| EP. 289: Hard Access Equals Big Bucks | Kentucky & Indiana Hammers | 22 Jun 2022 | 01:39:01 | |
Today on the podcast I’m joined by Jacob Emery. Jacob’s from Kentucky and has a no nonsense refreshing approach to hunting. He broke a 3 year drought in style with two public land hammers…one in Kentucky and one In Indiana. Both relied on hunting hard to reach areas that required water access. Even still…the water access wasn’t a nice Sunday paddle. Most wouldn’t even go into to hunt these areas. As the work to get a deer out required transferring deer to boat, from boat to ground, move boat around log jam, drag buck back to boat…reload buck in boat…and continue paddling. I really enjoyed this conversation and hope you all do too - thanks for listening!

Today on the podcast I’m joined by Justin Hollandsworth. Justin is a legit big buck killer from Ohio. His consistency of taking a target buck and surgically removing him from the landscape is second to few. What I like most about Justin's approach is his lifelong commitment to continue learning the craft of bowhunting. A new trick or tactic can come from anywhere...experienced hunters or the newbie who is resurfacing something you've maybe placed in the back of your mind. Or maybe paying attention to how coon dogs drift a track...is the big deer you're after drifting your track? I hope you dig the conversation as much as I did - thanks for listening!

If you’ve not seen the Day Six films on their YouTube channel…you’re missing out, and I’d make a point to give them a watch. Always an interesting conversation with Bryan, and I hope you all dig it as much as it did - thanks for listening!

I’ll be headed to pay him a visit this fall for an elk hunt, and look forward to spending some time in the wilderness with my buddy. Today on the podcast I’m joined by Kevin Estela from Fieldcraft Survival. Kevin is a wilderness survival and bushcraft expert and is the Director of Training at Fieldcraft Survival. As I’m preparing for an elk hunt in Grizzly country this fall, preparedness and survival has been on my mind. Truthfully, the events of the past 2 years should have everyone thinking about how prepared they are if they need to go it alone, or secure their loved ones for a period of time. I began reading Kevin’s book “101 Skills You Need To Survive In The Woods” and wanted to learn straight from the source. Kevin has a great way of teaching and communicating that comes natural and made this conversation one of my favorites to date. Hope you all dig it as much as I did - thanks for listening!

Today on the podcast I’m joined by Jake Downs. Jake is one of those guys folks may not be aware of, but the guy has put more tags on critters than anyone I can think of. Everything from Brown bear and Bison with traditional archery equipment, to grueling sheep hunts. In a day and age where it seems hunters are divided by nearly everything from weapon of choice to public vs private hunting vs outfitter vs guided etc., Jake enjoys all forms…kills in all forms…and makes no apologies. | EP. 277: Hunting Mature Bucks & Assuming I'm Always Wrong | Joe Rentmeester | 06 Apr 2022 | 01:41:52 | |
Today on the podcast I’m joined by my Joe Rentmeester. Many of you probably know Joe from the Hunting Beast or the Hunting Public's Public Land Challenge. Joe is one of those guys who seems to have a habit of finding, and killing mature deer...even in hard to hunt places. More than that, what I appreciate most is his insatiable need to continue learning...and questioning every piece of sign or intel he sees. I think his approach to assume his assumptions are incorrect until proven otherwise is why he's so successful. He's never closed off from new possibilities...or afraid to be wrong. This approach often end with a mature buck on the ground and a new mount on the wall for Joe. I really dug this conversation and hope you do too - thanks for listening!

| EP. 275: Don't Bug-Out | 30 Mar 2022 | 01:12:12 | |
Today on the podcast I’m joined by my Chris Derrick. Chris is the Whitetail Product Manager at Sitka gear. Today however, we are talking about the new turkey vest they recently launched along with their Equinox Guard gear. If avoiding ticks and mosquitos while you hunt is something that interests you...then these new Equinox Guard pieces are gong to be right up your alley. Personally I hunt a lot of swampy/buggy areas...and am good for a handful of tick bites a year even if I spray down. Ticks are my least favorite part of spring or early fall hunting...or summer scouting. I'm personally always a little nervous about getting a tick related illness. I really enjoyed the conversation, and think it's pretty rad that Sitka is making the effort to provide hunters some protection from ticks and related illnesses by building solutions into their gear. Hope you dig the show - thanks for listening!

| EP. 270: Killing Next Year's Buck w/ This Year's Sheds | 23 Feb 2022 | 01:52:59 | |
Today on the podcast I’m joined by my buddy Troy Pottenger. As a reminder, Troy is hunting some of the hardest to kill whitetails in the mountains of Idaho. He's not the only predator in the mountains, where deer are more often hunting by mountain lions, wolves and Grizzly. Few mistakes can be made, and Troy has to really be dialed in. What's more, he usually is hunting a specific buck. Hard enough to accomplish in the best of circumstances. For Troy, shed hunting isn't just something to do to pass the time during winter and spring. It's a key puzzle piece to determine when and where he may kill his next wall hanger. Today on the podcast I'm joined by my buddy Corey McKinney. One of my favorite things about traveling is meeting other hunters, particularly the locals. I met Corey in an Iowa public land parking lot…and then again, appropriately, at Casey’s. We shared what intel we each had about the piece of public we were both hunting, swapped a few trail camera pictures, and have stayed in touch since. This year Corey killed a killer Iowa hammer in that same area. Super cool hunt, and super cool story. Thanks for listening!

Today’s podcast is a little different. I wanted to revisit parts of conversations from the past year. Every year I go back and revisit episodes that I found to be extremely valuable…as a way to brush up on things I may have forgotten. Or identify holes in my approach I need to work on this coming off season. I thought creating a few “year in review" episodes would be fun…and may help you too. Thanks for listening!

| EP. 389: Adapting & Creating a Process For Killing Big Deer | Rendell Erik | 22 May 2024 | 01:40:01 | |
On today’s episode, I'm joined by Rendell, and we're diving into our recent hunting adventures across different states. We tackle the challenges of long drives, varying deer populations, and what makes certain states our top picks for hunting. Scouting, finding secondary food sources, and reading historical sign are key topics we cover.
Rendell shares an intense story about a 180-incher that got away, highlighting the challenges of open terrain hunting. We also discuss the mistakes made, lessons learned, and the importance of being aggressive and not overthinking when hunting mature bucks. Our strategies include hunting low in trees and using back cover for concealment.
Scouting and visualizing the hunt are crucial, and we talk about how taking phone videos during scouting of key spots can aid in planning. Trusting your instincts and sticking to your system without second-guessing is essential for success.
