Patreon Preview of Best Movie Year Ever: AMERICAN BEAUTY28 Aug 202400:06:47
If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999!

As usual one host works in a comic book origin story for AMERICAN BEAUTY as part of a clever ruse to avoid talking about Kevin Spacey in one of his Oscar-winning performances. The other host talks about aging out of being Mena Suvari's peer to Annette Bening. There is some hope of personal growth in this episode!

Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION!

American Pie (1999)29 Jun 202400:30:39
The First Part in our Sex Pact Trilogy

For our latest trilogy we make a sex pact. Not with each other but with three films on films where friends take "the next step" together. Unfortunately for our first entry in AMERICAN PIE it's the likes of Jason Biggs and Chris Klein awkwardly making these moves on the likes of the Alyson Hannigan and Mean Suvari. Thankfully all of them mostly come out unscathed as we remark on the strange sweetness of this perverted movie that was THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY for the blink-182 crowd. What we are saying is that in our 40s we are no better now than we were then. Especially when it comes to our fandom of Natasha Lyonne!

The Deer Hunter (1978)25 May 202200:42:37
We open the episode with no faith in the human race and end up with a passionate discussion on the musical GREASE.

Somewhere in between we talk about possibly the first Academy Award Best Picture winner on TiT in Michal Cimino's THE DEER HUNTER. Giving it the proper respect it deserves. But that Rizzo, my goodness, that brings back awkward school memories...

Five Deadly Venoms (1978)18 May 202200:28:11
A correction is issued by one host for fear of being tracked down by a venomous social club.

Meanwhile the other host maintains his composure by doing what most white male film fans do when confronted with an international film he doesn't understand by citing a Tarantino movie that ripped it off.

(This may also just be yet another excuse for him to think of Uma Thurman.)

Regardless of the mistakes that we made much merriment was have by watching THE FIVE VENOMS or FIVE DEADLY VENOMS because we need as much SEO help as possible on this little podcast.

Threesomes Can Be Awkward But Rewarding11 May 202200:29:32
In which even a trilogy of threesomes isn't enough... what about a foursome?

Emotional and sexual rumbles!

Flashback to one host's love triangle!

Another host proudly playing the part of the pervert!

All of this and slightly more as we discuss the functions of threesomes in AS GOOD AS IT GETS, THE STATION AGENT and VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)04 May 202200:28:21
In which Rebecca Hall gets her revenge.

Maybe this was a little THE NIGHT HOUSE buzz talking (currently taking HBO Max by storm... probably) but after her appearance on our episode for THE TOWN last month she gets to enjoy the company of Scarlett Johannson, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. And also two time featured player this month on TiT, the great Patricia Clarkson!

(Notice how these show notes are not mentioning writer and director Woody Allen NOR how many times his films have been featured on this very podcast. We are so good.)

Join us for our most sporting episode yet as we discuss who makes our starting threesome and who rides the bench. It is TiTillating.

The Station Agent (2003)27 Apr 202200:29:12
A film so good that two DVD copies are needed just in case of divorce.

We continue the least sexy threesome trilogy by going with the quiet, contemplative and platonic Tom McCarthy film THE STATION AGENT. Peter Dinklage and Patricia Clarkson don't contribute much to Bobby Cannavale's one man show of dialogue... which would normally set off two guys whose friendship is based on talking at great length BUT NO MATTER! This film is CHARMING and more importantly is the classic Mr. McCarthy wishes SPOTLIGHT could be!

That's the closest thing to a hot take you will find on a podcast on THE STATION AGENT. Respond with your titillation at the links below:

As Good As It Gets (1997)25 Apr 202200:30:21
Jack plus any other two equals a good time.

Even if the character Mr. Nicholson is playing is racist, homophobic, sexist and any other cancellable offense. The thing is though... he was offensive in 1997! But he's Jack Nicholson! Which excuses a lot.

(Disclaimer: but not everything.)

Since we are not Jack we have to work a little harder to out-charm this classic from James L. Brooks WITHOUT using the cheat of an adorable dog and multiple grand gesture monologues. Although this being a movie podcast... there's already some monologuing. Charming!

The Masks of the Batman21 Apr 202200:28:21
Batman is more than an HBO Max premiere. It's a podcast event.

And we celebrate all the Batmen in our lives. Mainly because one co-host wants the other to stop talking about Battinson (that unfortunately obsessive man has now watched the latest adventure three times) so he had to offer up these films to the podcast gods:

  • Michael Keaton as a hero fighting for squatter's rights in PACIFIC HEIGHTS!
  • Christian Bale attempting to elevate the discourse around pop music of the 80s in AMERICAN PSYCHO!
  • And last but not least (and the correct host's favorite Batman) Ben Affleck heroically turning down Blake Lively in THE TOWN so that the world may know a true martyr in this godforsaken world!

On that note... happy late Easter everyone!

The Town (2010)06 Apr 202200:37:10
In which we travel back to a time when people liked Jeremy Renner.

Though he's playing a character in Ben Affleck's THE TOWN that is only SLIGHTLY less likable than Hawkeye. Thankfully if Renner at his best is still not your cup of tea we have Blake Lively (at her worst... which is still really nice) and Rebecca Ferguson continuing her cinematic journey of being the straight arrow surrounded by shenanigans.

Boston shenanigans. Shamrocks! Fenway Park! All brought to you by two movie podcasters from Kentucky and Virginia. Brining some Southern hospitality to the massholes robbing banks. That's the ticket!

American Psycho (2000)02 Apr 202200:31:27
In which even a dork finds many horrific acts more appealing than Reese Witherspoon.

Thankfully we don't share Christian Bale's taste in romantic partners... or more importantly his love of HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS in the modern classic of a dark comedy AMERICAN PSYCHO.

Along the way we debate if this avoided becoming a college dorm room poster thanks to the sensibilities of director Mary Harron and NOT the author of the source material in Bret Easton Jack Ass.

Oh and did we mention the protagonist's hatred for Jared Leto in this film? Maybe we have more in common than we thought... Enjoy!

Pacific Heights (1990)24 Mar 202200:29:00
In which real estate thrillers aren't that thrilling.

Michael Keaton upset a young Batman fan back in 1990 but a lifelong devotion to Melanie Griffith was born with that VHS rental of PACIFIC HEIGHTS.

Unfortunately the same can't be said about Matthew Modine as the hosts spend a good few minutes searching for his charisma (answer: AND THE BAND PLAYS ON or when Julianna Moore is sans pants) and answers to the real estate market.

Exciting stuff in the latest episode of TRILOGY IN THEORY!

Patreon Preview of Best Movie Year Ever: THE SIXTH SENSE28 Jun 202400:05:44
If you have a buck instead of a book you too can time travel with us back to 1999!

Toni Collette should have won an Oscar for and Bruce Willis at his best in THE SIXTH SENSE! This is the episode where we do not trash a universally loved modern classic ("modern" so we don't feel so old on this film's twenty-fifth anniversary) HOWEVER... the show does open with a bit of some IT FOLLOWS rules lawyering. But then it's right back to the love fest for M. Night Shyamalan's biggest hit. No, it's not THE VILLAGE. We already played that hip card on a prior episode so please go download that after you listen. Enjoy!

Enjoy and catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION!

Holy New Release! It's... The Batman (2022)17 Mar 202200:44:49
In which one host caters to the other who really, really loves his funny books.

But also... we are pandering for listeners with the only new release around. Thankfully (?) director Matt Reeves is making the media rounds pulling from superior works such as SEVEN and ZODIAC. Alas, there is no David Fincher behind the camera but there is Colin Farrell in a lot of makeup hiding his pretty face.

I don't know if that's good or bad but enjoy the latest episode of TRILOGY IN THEORY!

Travels to a Second Love15 Mar 202200:32:17
A valentine episode with enough distance from that wretched holiday. Get drunk instead this week for St. Patrick's Day!

Traveling to a second love comes very naturally to this podcast especially when a Kevin Smith joint is included. A future month feature a trilogy on the amount of times this great auteur has been mentioned on this podcast... but today is all about Ben Affleck picking up garbage in JERSEY GIRL! Also the amusing nudity of Jason Segal in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL! And unfortunately (especially after those two previous sentences) we honor the loss of William Hurt as featured here in THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST.

Overall another depressing episode of TRILOGY IN THEORY perked up by male nudity and the appearance of Mr. Affleck. For a brief combination of the two we will program GONE GIRL at a later date. Enjoy!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)06 Mar 202200:29:46
In which we applaud the use of crying and male nudity in film.

While also still finding it very funny. Also some disagreement to be had in the applause a man deserves for calling off oral sex when having a crisis of conscious.

These show notes for FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL are going to do gangbuster numbers with the SEO material provided by Jason Segal, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill... let's see who else will provide some hits.

Paul Rudd and oral sex! But not really.

Bill Hader and comments about oral sex! Kind of! Enjoy!

Jersey Girl (2004)04 Mar 202200:28:58
In which Liv Tyler somehow makes us miss video stores even more.

One host could be forgiven for stopping with Ms. Tyler but apparently there are at least two other Jersey girls in Kevin Smith's much maligned JERSEY GIRL. We are glad that the world is a little more welcoming of a Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romance in 2022 but remain split on the idea of fatherhood and musicals being good for The One True DAREDEVIL. Enjoy!

The Accidental Tourist (1988)09 Feb 202200:33:12
In which it all comes down (or up) to height.

We can assume the above was the tipping point for Oscar voters when appraising the Academy Award performance of Geena Davis in Lawrence Kasdan's THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST. However Kathleen Turner is fine. Very fine.

Okay, we will eventually turn our attention to William Hurt. But not before an odd moment of stanning for Meg Tilly. Who is not in this movie. But remains in one co-host's heart.

(Shameless self-promotion in our own show notes: check out our prior episode on PSYCHO 2 for more Tilly fandom. Yes, it's odd.)

Enjoy!

Stolen Scraps of the Holidays02 Feb 202200:32:07
Ae winter holidays for an episode wondering why we can not be happy.

What began with a Thanksgiving feast Paul Newman's old beautiful blue eyes filled with youthful glee at his pranks in NOBODY's FOOL turned to Sam Raimi decidedly not having fun in the new year with his crime gone wrong in A SIMPLE PLAN.

And then we get to one of the biggest comedy actors of all time choosing to get his heart broken repeatedly on Valentine's Day in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Thanks, Jim Carrey.

Thanks, world.

Enjoy.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)20 Jan 202200:28:00
In which we look forward to Valentine's Day by looking back at memories we no longer have.

As part of the wretched film Internet community at large we ALSO tend to forget how we felt about films in our youth versus what we favor now. Thank god we have a podcast so we can work through those issues as well as assigning blame to this Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet starring classic... for POSSIBLY starting the manic pixie dream girl craze of the mid-2000s.

Don't @ us bro, this film is still better than GARDEN STATE and ELIZABETHTOWN.

In which we make a New Year's Resolution to eat the rich.

Billy Bob Thornton not included... as he is already playing a pretty sad dude in this Sam Raimi thriller. Bridget Fonda on the other hand as Lady Macbeth here...

Okay, enough shenanigans, In 2022 we tackle the American Dream. Simple enough podcasting for the new year as we continue to pick up the scraps in our latest TRILOGY IN THEORY!

Nobody's Fool (1994)18 Nov 202100:30:52
In which one host rediscovers Melanie Griffith.

And a few other things to be thankful for ahead of Thanksgiving. Such as:

  • The fact that this film is not the Tiffany Haddish comedy from a few years ago.
  • Although we haven't seen that flick so maybe we are wrong.
  • Wrong like the perennial loser character played by Paul Newman in THIS Nobody's Fool.
  • Although he is Paul Newman.
  • And we are not.
  • But we remain thankful for Melanie Griffith.
  • Very thankful.

A Second Stay in Horrible Hotels11 Nov 202100:32:28
We test our commitment to sequels as we choose to visit three horror franchise hotels again...

... and it's THE DEVIL'S REJECTS getting the poor Airbnb review. This is just one of many hot takes as we sing the praises of PSYCHO 2 and DOCTOR SLEEP. For that your favorite TRILOGY IN THEORY hosts assign blame on everyone but themselves:

  • A podcast history with not completing THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE stopped our HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES research team from completing their task.
  • A lack of travel over the last couple of years maybe, just maybe, has made the likes of Norman Bates or Rebecca Ferguson in a top hat much more appealing visits.
  • Sherri Moon Zombie is still starring in THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. We do not go out to the ice machine while she's... acting.

All of that and some life lessons from George Costanza!

The Straight Story (1999)27 Jun 202400:35:42
The Third Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy

Although David Lynch's THE STRAIGHT STORY didn't make the cut for our Book Club (shame on you Best Movie Year Ever!) but it's better than END OF DAYS (another strange omission from the book on 1999 in film) and so it gets to be included in a proper trilogy. On the definitive movie podcast on movie trilogies. That are not actually trilogies.

Okay, we are going a bit off the rails here so how about a hot take? This is better Lynch than MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Enjoy! Or don't!

Doctor Sleep (2019)03 Nov 202100:33:21
In which a director's cut almost causes a divorce...

...but thankfully Mike Flanagan's DOCTOR SLEEP is so good that both your hosts remain married. The tragedy of our respective wives lives is our listeners gain as we do a poor job of maintaining our glee for Stephen King's course correction of THE SHINING cinematic universe.

However... we still love Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film.

And we love Ewan McGregor as the grown up Danny in a sequel to said classic.

We even love Rebecca Ferguson in that ridiculous hat!

This is an episode full of swooning so one host must hate on Jacob Tremblay for a brief moment. Enjoy!

The Devil's Rejects (2005)28 Oct 202100:26:52
In which we support divorce for the Zombies.

That's a bit unfair to Sheri Moon Zombie as she represents only one third of THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. She is also not a clown.

And on this episode we encourage people to slap clowns.

But do we really want to slap clowns? Tim Curry was fine.

This is not fine. Stop playing Free Bird, Rob Zombie. It's beneath even clowns.

Psycho 2 (1983)25 Oct 202100:26:06
In which we have fun with gaslighting.

As long as that gaslighting is being done to a serial killer! It's fun we promise.

Along the way we talk about what many may perceive to be a great insult to classic cinema in the first sequel to PSYCHO but we look upon with great reverence for inspiring the likes of SCREAM 3 or more importantly... JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. The day that cinema was complete.

Enjoy!

Debunking Is No Fun (Tombstone, 1408 and The Girl on the Train)18 Oct 202100:55:10
We let a trilogy of films ask the questions...

...and then question why the characters in said films asked them. However we do manage to challenge each other on a few points:

  • Why has it taken one host THIS LONG to watch TOMBSTONE and does he feel like less of a man because of this absence in his life?
  • Is John Cusack more annoying than ghosts?
  • And can Emily Blunt ever be unattractive even or especially when she's mid-drunken rant?

All of this AND MORE is answered on the latest episode of TRILOGY IN THEORY!

Rashomon Again and Again13 Oct 202100:24:46
Doddering old podcast hosts try to remember the three films they watched last month.

And the only reminder we get from our friends on the Internet is that we discussed Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI. Those comments were pleasant, as usual. But fear not! For the them of this month that we stole from Akira Kurosawa's RASHOMON is that we can choose to remember fan feedback differently! We can remember Carla Gugino as a fine actress and a healthy figure in Brian De Palma's SNAKE EYES! And... actually we are going to hold on that memory for a moment. Enjoy the rest of the episode and leave us old men behind. Just like Yoda taught.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)29 Sep 202100:34:27
In which we discuss the movie that caused us to lose faith in our fellow man.

Among other things.

Anyway this is an episode about STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI which proved that once and for all that a small minority of obnoxiously loud Star Wars fans are neither fans of Star Wars nor movies. On the first part we can now agree with them as we are tired of the discourse surrounding this Rian Johnson entry in yet another Disney franchise.

However we have a podcast to produce. So THIS... is the final word on the Skywalker saga. Now leave us alone. But keep downloading.

Snake Eyes (1998)26 Sep 202100:26:58
In which we discuss an ample bosom.

And missiles. Also Brian De Palma's SNAKE EYES. We like to think that the director would be proud of this. For Nicolas Cage with runaway chest hair, hideous fashion sense and overall just being loud in every capacity calls for an episode...

...on the ample bosom of cinema. Enjoy!

Rashomon (1950)24 Sep 202100:26:54
In which we discover that Akira Kurosawa did not in fact make a film similar to BARBERSHOP.

As it's long been said by one host on this show "a Kurosawa film is the bran muffin of cinema."

Yes, dear listeners... it is probably time that we retreat back to yet another Tarantino film on this feed. However while we're here we might as well try and discuss the classic bowel movement aid of a film that is RASHOMON. At least three times!

This is a movie podcast on trilogies after all. Three is very important to us. As are bowel movements. We are old. And we are spending our dwindling days on this... whatever this is. Enjoy!

A Number of Arguments in One Room22 Sep 202100:32:51
As usual... this episode starts with our segment called Ask Women As Answered By Two Men.

And it goes horribly wrong for one co-host. While the other one giggles we get back to the online arguments that we are comfortable with: movie trilogies of our own making. This month it was a combination of Sidney Lumet's 12 ANGRY MEN, Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT and J.J. Abrams' (or one of his fellow silver spooned creatively deceased buddies) 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and how they all add up to A NUMBER OF ARGUMENTS IN ONE ROOM!

That's the title of this episode. We talk about that. And also womenfolk. But only briefly. Please listen.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)08 Sep 202100:26:53
If two movie podcast hosts find themselves in a bunker during the end of the world... they still grumble about J.J. Abrams.

...HOWEVER, we aren't total elitist snobs. An insult to Terrence Malick is included in the first two minutes of this episode. That means it only takes two minutes to conclude that your hosts can never be pleased. Except if you've hit play! And subscribe! Rate! Review! Five stars!

Or we will be forced to release an episode on THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX. You have been warned.

Speed (1994)26 Jun 202400:31:46
The Second Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy

They don't make them like they used to. Because every movie coming out now Is. Simply. Not. SPEED.

From the auteur Jan de Bone we were introduced to the next great Hollywood star in Sandra Bullock (apologies to DEMOLITION MAN) and Keanu was anointed as The Next Great Action Star (though THE MATRIX and JOHN WICK would still be some years away.) And then there's Jeff Daniels as the boozing, cynical Obi-Wan Kenobi who knows everything about bombs and almost nothing about sober love-making. Even these show notes are making me want to watch SPEED again. As. Should. You.

Catchup on last year's Movie Book Club from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION!

The Hateful Eight (2015)06 Sep 202100:34:37
This is a movie podcast hosted by two dudes. So here's another Tarantino movie.

The difference is that this time it's the lesser host Web's favorite QT flick. One could blame the better host (and author of these show notes) Mike for not seeing this coming... but the author of these show notes is far more comfortable blaming his partner on this podcast. In keeping with the theme of this month's trilogy there's plenty of blame to go around! Such as:

  • The Roadshow version on Netflix is now quite distasteful (no intermission!)
  • The attacks on Michael Madsen's looks are also quite distasteful (he just wants to visit his mother for Christmas!)
  • And not enough Zoe Bell (agreed!)

And if you still haven't had enough arguments... wait for the finale of this TRILOGY IN THEORY!

12 Angry Men (1957)19 Aug 202100:34:01
One host has a new favorite movie... and it's no longer Guy Ritchie's SNATCH.

Meanwhile the other host is hoping for a "sluttier" version of the classic 12 ANGRY MEN... and THANKFULLY there exists a cable tv version starring Jack Lemmon and James Gandolfini.

Sexy.

But that is for another episode of TRILOGY IN THEORY as this month's theme is kicked off by the Sidney Lumet "original" but not the crappy television version that both hosts couldn't be bothered to check out on their Criterion Collection discs.

We are busy men! Making podcasts. For you!

Historical Fiction Team-Ups... of the 60s12 Aug 202100:29:36
We start with funny books, hate on true stories and in the end save all the compliments for ourselves.

It's the ultimate team-up as your two hosts take on the likes of great artist such as Darwyn Cooke, Quentin Tarantino and then we throw in Guy Ritchie because even we make mistakes! But this matters not as we can rewrite our own reality with a historical fiction trilogy where Martian Manhunter, the man who played Superman and Brad Pitt is just around the corner to save the day in (take notes here, because we have three prior episodes that could use the downloads)

  • JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER
  • THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
  • ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD

All of those (and so many more!) can be found at the links below:

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019)04 Aug 202100:35:22
Not since the hosts of this very podcast has there been a more handsome team-up.

Slightly better hair on Leo and Brad, though. We should hate them. But we don't. Although it took one host a few rides out to the squatters known as the Manson family before it clicked.

This Brad Pitt guy really IS incredibly handsome. And cool.

We should just hang out with these guys in ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD every week. That's the medicine the brighter host takes. It hasn't helped with hair loss but pretty much everything else. Enjoy!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)31 Jul 202100:26:47
Your much beloved hosts team up to take down a cannibal...

... and also Guy Ritchie's film adaptation of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. which is just silly.

Silly in that the sell by date for this particular IP is well past relevancy?

Silly in that we find it more absurd than our previous selected film which features a shapeshifting martian saving the world?

Silly in... OKAY, we can admit that Henry Cavill really does wear a suit well. Worth a watch and a listen!

Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)21 Jul 202100:29:03
One host gets his way to take this podcast direct-to-video...

...and then keeps apologizing for it. Is it because he does not enjoy our selection of JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER?

No.

But he does admit that his reasoning is he bought a new toy to sit on his shelf and so here we are as we kick off a team-up trilogy with Darywn Cooke's all-hands-on-deck look at the DC Universe and the best comic book adaptation.

That also happens to be a cartoon. That went straight to video. We'll never do this again.

Maybe. Enjoy!

Hitchcockian Duality (Dressed to Kill, What Lies Beneath and Shutter Island)14 Jul 202100:53:38
We restrain ourselves... in a trilogy on film love excess.

The three films selected not only are a celebration of three prior months/trilogies on this podcast... I'll wait as you go back and download every single episode. Ahem... THEY ARE ALSO doing a cover of sort of The Master of Suspense as we get callbacks to PSYCHO in Brian De Palma's DRESSED TO KILL.

Some REAR WINDOW in Robert Zemeckis' WHAT LIES BENEATH... which is perhaps the greatest film ever featured on this podcast. REAR WINDOW would be #2.

And last but not least that hack Martin Scorsese gets in on the action with SHUTTER ISLAND. Would this be VERTIGO or THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY? At that point in the podcast we were having too much fun and may have lost the thread. Enjoy!

A Breakdown of a Trip26 Jun 202100:27:47
We take a trip based solely on our love for pudding.

And also Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. And Woody Allen's BLUE JASMINE... or Cate Blanchett's BLUE JASMINE if you'd rather. But in a third act twist (and one host hates that it comes to this) you have our resident Criterion Collection hater who waits for our wrap-up show to finally warm to Paul Thomas Anderson's PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.

This marks a year of the journey that is TRILOGY IN THEORY. Thank you for coming along for the ride and ending up not quite like Janet Leigh but you still met a couple of perverts with a weird and abrasive hobby called podcasting. Many thanks. Here's to another year.

Blue Jasmine (2013)17 Jun 202100:23:45
In which Cate Blanchett has more than a few financial problems but is still better off than people who spend their time podcasting.

Anytime now, Spotify. Anyway... Ms. Blanchett is great here. As is Sally Hawkins. And we suppose the director (WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS) does some fine work as well.

Casting Louis CK as The Other Man was a curious choice even in 2013.

But Cate Blanchett is so good!

Just to go back to that Louis CK point... he was The Other Man to... Bobby Cannavale.

That's it. This is the last Woody Allen episode. Thanks for listening.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)09 Jun 202100:26:34
In which we wonder what Paul Thomas Anderson saw in BILLY MADISON and/or HAPPY GILMORE.

And we don't stop questioning universally sanctioned arbiters of taste! One host continues to take the Criterion Collection to task for their choices while the other questions his co-host's mentioning of THE BIG BANG THEORY in relation to the modern classic that is PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. This is episode 50 of TRILOGY IN THEORY and thank you for taking this trip with us as we continue our breakdown trilogy.

Sorcerer (1977)25 Jun 202400:30:52
The First Part in our Driving with Death Trilogy

We open with an attack on Star Wars and then quickly move to expressing annoyance at the auteur Nicolas Winding Refn's interview style. Populist and independent cinema... no one is safe with us!

Much like the characters in William Friedkin's SORCERER. Just a bunch of dudes driving through the jungle with dynamite in the back of the truck and two brave podcasters airing their various grievances. Same same!

Psycho (1960)02 Jun 202100:32:35
In which we wonder if there is anything left to say about PSYCHO... and then spend a half hour talking about PSYCHO.

But mainly this episode is about one question... when is the right time to watch PSYCHO? And also... do spoilers matter for a film like this that has influenced so much that came after?

And the answer is now. And spoilers don't matter... as longs you are listening to a TRILOGY IN THEORY episode on it.

So now Alfred Hitchcock's film is worthy. That's how that works.

Grieving Mothers, Good Movies26 May 202100:31:48
In which one host still just wants to talk about ALIENS and refuses to honor mothers.

As much as I love throwing my co-host under the bus in these show notes (as it truly is the only contribution I make to this podcast) I believe he will suffer no hardship this week.

For neither of our mothers listen to this show. However YOU, dear listener, can fix that by highly recommending this very show to your mothers.

Especially if you have a less than ideal relationship with them.

Like one who abandoned you to hang out with a cat in space. Or maybe switched careers to end up on the more profitable side of the war on drugs. My pick? Always go with Anna Kendrick. This is our episode on ALIENS, TRAFFIC, and A SIMPLE FAVOR.
