The One Thing 97% of Expats Don't Do04 Jun 202400:36:50

The number of U.S. expats living abroad is equivalent to being the 11th-largest state in the country. But barely 4% of us turn out to vote! Expats have the lowest voter turnout of any demographic in the United States - lower than high school students - and the same phenomena is probably happening in every country. If you're living outside of your home country right now (or planning to move abroad someday), this episode is a must-listen!

Tune in to hear from Nicole Greenfield, aka The Nomad Activist, a digital nomad and political activist who reached out to Kristin to speak about this topic and how we can change it.

Your vote matters. If every American expat voted, we would easily change the outcomes of current and future elections.

Vote absentee, vote early, and spread the word to your expat friends! Let’s make a change!

Special Offers:

Topics Discussed:

  • Why the US media doesn’t talk about expats not voting.
  • Why it’s still important to vote if you live abroad.
  • How politics impact travel and digital nomads.
  • The #1 easiest way to vote from abroad.
  • How digital nomads and expats can get involved and spread the word about voting.

Questions Answered:

  • What got you into political activism?
  • How do you practice activism as a full-time digital nomad?
  • Are American expats more liberal/Democrat or conservative/Republican?
  • What are the easiest ways to vote from abroad?
  • Can expats really sway election outcomes?
  • How do you balance being a traveler and digital nomad who also wants to make a difference in the US?

How can you use your phone in another country? What is the best way to make phone calls when abroad? Kristin answers listener questions about what to do with your cell phone when traveling. Plus, she answers questions about travel insurance and showing proof of return travel when traveling on a one-way ticket.

Questions Answered:

  • How can you use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger if there's no Wi-Fi nearby?

  • When you buy a ticket to a destination but you don't know how long you have to stay, should you buy a one-way ticket, a round-trip ticket, or a one-way ticket to another destination?

  • Do you have to buy a round trip ticket entering and leaving the same country, or can you buy the entry ticket for one country and the exit ticket for another?

  • What type of travel insurance do you recommend? Is it better to use credit card insurance or buy a separate policy?

Traveling with World as a Surf Photographer with Jimmy Wilson07 Jun 202201:05:16

Kristin's brother, Jimmy, shares how he created a flexible, untraditional lifestyle that allows him to work from home, co-parent his daughter, and travel the world as a surf photographer.

Jimmy also shares what a day in the life of a surf photographer is like, including stories from his travels around the world (like the time he saw professional surfer, Mick Fanning, get attacked by a shark in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa).

In the Lightning Round, find out:

  • Which camera and equipment Jimmy uses
  • His favorite surf destination and non-surf destination
  • Cheap flight/travel hacks
  • Jet Lag tips
  • How to stay motivated working at home
  • A photography tip everyone should know
  • What his future goals include

Meet the Ingrams – a “typical” American family who documented their journey to become expats living abroad in London, Singapore, and Taiwan. Their new reality TV show, “The Expats International Ingrams,” has been streamed more than 2.3 million times on Amazon Prime, but it wasn’t always that way…

Series Creator and Producer, Juanita Ingram, sits down with Kristin from her home in Taipei to share her advice (learned the hard way) of overcoming the many challenges of moving to a new country.
