A Tale of Two Rail Terminals: Boston's Century Old Transit Quirk
Saison 2 · Épisode 86
mardi 19 août 2025 • Durée 27:04
Boston's North and South stations serve as critical transit hubs but remain disconnected despite a century of failed attempts to link them.
• North Station serves 40,000 daily commuters from northern suburbs and connects to Amtrak's Downeaster route
• South Station handles 60,000 daily commuters and serves as terminus for multiple Amtrak routes including Acela
• Transferring between stations requires a 16-25 minute journey using multiple subway lines
• Five major attempts to connect the stations have failed since the 1930s due to funding issues and political obstacles
• The Big Dig highway project complicated future connection possibilities by placing a tunnel between the stations
• Current estimated costs for connecting the stations range from $12-21 billion
• Engineering challenges include tunneling under existing infrastructure, electrifying commuter rail, and working in a dense urban environment
• Advocates continue pushing for the connection citing climate goals and regional transit equity

Derailed Dreams: The Rise and Fall of Minnesota's North Star Rail
Saison 2 · Épisode 85
mardi 12 août 2025 • Durée 27:29
The North Star Rail line in Minnesota is being canceled after struggling with ridership, particularly following a devastating 98% drop during the pandemic. Though originally conceived as an 80-mile connection between Minneapolis and St. Cloud, budget constraints limited it to just 40 miles ending in Big Lake, setting the project up for challenges from the start.
• 40-mile commuter rail line with seven stations running from Minneapolis to Big Lake
• Pre-pandemic ridership approached 800,000 annually but collapsed to just 400 daily riders today
• Service reduction from six to four daily round trips further hampered recovery efforts
• Recent transit-oriented development along the route now threatened by line's cancellation
• Metropolitan Council replacing rail service with buses, reducing operating budget from $12M to $2M
• Original plan to extend to St. Cloud (population 70,000) never materialized
• Lack of stations in key areas like north Minneapolis likely limited potential ridership
• Political pressure accelerated the cancellation

Rethinking Car Ownership with Car Sharing
Saison 2 · Épisode 84
mardi 5 août 2025 • Durée 24:37
We explore how car-sharing services like Zipcar are changing urban mobility patterns and helping people reduce or eliminate personal car ownership while maintaining flexibility for special trips.
• Car sharing complements public transit with each shared vehicle taking up to 13 privately owned cars off the street
• 83% of Zipcar members don't own cars, and 27% sell their cars within a year of joining
• 63% of car-sharing members are regular transit riders who use cars for occasional needs
• Most common uses: errands (49%), grocery shopping (47%), leaving the city (41%)
• Car sharing fills the gaps in transit systems for bulky purchases, multiple errands, and time-sensitive appointments
• The service differs from ride-hailing by allowing users to keep items in the car between stops
• Car ownership typically costs $500+ monthly, making car sharing a cost-effective alternative
• Car sharing reduces parking demand and helps create more space-efficient cities

Can Philadelphia Save Its Transit System Before August?
Saison 2 · Épisode 82
mardi 22 juillet 2025 • Durée 25:38
Philadelphia's public transit agency, SEPTA, faces devastating 45% budget cuts if Pennsylvania doesn't pass adequate funding, threatening to eliminate 50 bus routes, end rail service at 9 pm, and cancel five suburban rail lines. We are joined by Steve, a Transit advocate from How We Get Around, to discuss the crisis and ongoing fight to save the system.
• SEPTA's funding crisis stems from Act 89's reduction from $450 million to $50 million for public transit statewide
• COVID relief funds temporarily kept service running, but are now depleted
• Proposed cuts would eliminate 50 bus routes and end all rail service at 9 pm
• Five of thirteen suburban rail lines would be canceled entirely, including the busy Paoli-Thorndale line
• Pennsylvania Senate remains the primary obstacle to passing transit funding
• Several Republican senators from transit-served areas have emerged as advocates
• State budget negotiations continue, but without a clear timeline for resolution
• Advocacy groups, including Save the Train, Transit for All PA, and Transit Forward Philadelphia are mobilizing public pressure
• New SEPTA GM Charles Sauer, who started as a trolley operator, brings operational experience to leadership
• Advocates stress the importance of creating permanent funding solutions beyond the current crisis

• SEPTA's tap-to-pay system proves convenient for making connections across multiple modes
• Roosevelt Boulevard corridor plans include potential BRT, light rail, or subway extensions by 2040
• Historic trolley system provides frequent service but faces capacity challenges with packed cars
• Visiting Camden via PATCO and returning by ferry adds a multistate dimension to Philadelphia transit
• SEPTA faces a critical funding crisis with potential 45% service cuts and fare increases threatening system viability
