The NTSP's Prof Sarah Wallace was recently speaking in Cancun, Mexico at the Sociedad Latinoamericano de Disfagia (SLAD, the Latin American Dysphagia Conference).
Sarah bumped into SLP legend Dr Martin Brodsky, PhD, ScM, CCC-SLP, F-ASHA. Martin is Section Head of Speech-Language Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and an internationally recognised clinician and researcher in swallowing, voice and airway disorders. His work has a particular focus on the consequences of critical illness, including swallowing problems and laryngeal injury following intubation and mechanical ventilation. Before joining Cleveland Clinic in 2022, Martin spent around 15 years at Johns Hopkins University, where he retains adjunct academic appointments in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. A Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, his research brings speech and language pathology firmly into the multidisciplinary critical care environment, exploring how we can better identify, understand and treat airway, voice and swallowing problems in patients recovering from critical illness.

Sarah also ran into Professor Valeria Ton. Valeria is an Argentinian speech and language pathologist who is currently the President of the Asociación Argentina de Disfagia and Clinical Coordinator of Speech Therapy at CIAREC in Buenos Aires. Valeria is a well known expert in adult swallowing disorders, neurogenic dysphagia, and airway rehabilitation.

ACV is a way of enabling patients with cuff-inflated tracheostomies to talk again! While the headline is speech, there is lots more going on that helps recovery of swallowing, coughing and communication.

NTSP Literature Review Podcast: Feb 2026 (S7, Ep1)
This months papers cover:
First— a huge global survey from the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative showed the biggest problems in trach care aren’t always technical. They’re education, staffing, access, and caregiver support.
Second — fasting before percutaneous tracheostomy. A Turkish ICU study found longer fasting did not reduce aspiration risk, but did delay nutrition recovery and increase oxygen requirements, supporting our approach at the NTSP for tracheostomy in recovering critically ill patients.
Third — a German team showed minimally invasive tracheostomy could be safely performed even in patients with previous neck surgery using ultrasound, bronchoscopy, and blunt dissection techniques.
Fourth — a Korean study looked at landmark-guided PDT without bronchoscopy or ultrasound in resource-limited settings. It appeared feasible and safe after an initial learning curve — but adjuncts still matter in high-risk patients.
And finally… tracheostomy in cats. Yes, really.

Helen is a community-based SLT who looks after children with complex needs, including children with tracheostomies. Helen works at the Vale Federation- a group of special schools in Aylesbury in the UK.
Brendan and Helen discuss practical advice of where parents should start in their efforts to find local support once they're home from hospital with a young child who will have on going complex needs. Helen outlines the support available from schools (for school-age kids) and Health Visitors (for pre-schoolers) and the GP and the Paediatric services. Importantly, Helen discusses what help could and should be available, and how Helen and the team at the Vale Federation deliver that support - essential listening for parents, families and staff in the sector.

The team were in India in February 2026 and had the privelege to meet patients, families and staff who were working to improve tracheostomy care. This special interview is a conversation between Prof Brendan McGrath and Prof Sarah Wallace from the NTSP, reflecting on their time in India. Tracy is Professor of Healthcare & Implementation Science in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery & Health, Northumbria University, UK. Tracy’s research focuses on how we can understand and support the implementation of complex interventions in health, care and wellbeing. Tracy is known for her work in implementation science, most notably Normalization Process Theory (NPT), of which she is co-developer, and for developing tools and assessment instruments to support non-academic users conducting implementation work in practice settings.Tracy was part of the team leading the Improving Tracheostomy Care program in the UK. Neil is a paediatric ENT (or ORL if you are in America!) surgeon who works at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, UK. You will see Neil in some of our paediatric videos, and he has been working with the NTSP for many years. Ganesh was President of the UK Intensive Care Society during the COVID-19 pandemic which impacted globally in 2020. Ganesh had already established himself as a medical leader and an airway expert, but he tells us all about the impact of the pandemic on our services in the UK and how they managed to deliver high qualiuty care to so many people. Ganesh was awarded an OBE for his services to the NHS in 2021.
