| Jaclyn Lunaas and Chris Macaluso | Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership | Ep. 1032 | 13 oct. 2026 | 01:08:13 | |
One company owned by Canada’s Cooke Inc. is catching about 70% of all the Atlantic menhaden that can legally be harvested. The fish we love to chase depend on that bait to survive: striped bass, tarpon, redfish, cobia, king mackerel, and bluefin tuna all rely on menhaden, and so do ospreys and whales.
I sat down with Chris Macaluso and Jaclyn Lunaas of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) to find out how this works. They explain how Virginia ended up with 75% of the coast-wide quota, and how a leasing loophole lets a foreign-owned company fish under an American flag. We also cover the Louisiana bycatch study, which estimated that 140 to 160 million additional fish are killed in a single Gulf season, including about 30,000 redfish and 250,000 speckled trout.
We get into the science too. Regulators found that the Atlantic menhaden population had been overestimated by about 40%. The science called for a cut of more than 50%, but the commission took only a 20% cut for 2026. In the Gulf, Louisiana and Mississippi have no catch limits at all.
Most importantly, Chris and Jaclyn explain what you can do about it, even if you never catch a striped bass in your life.

| Dane Sanders | Men and Women of Discomfort | Ep. 1031 | 06 oct. 2026 | 01:11:41 | |
Full Article on Tomrowlandpodcast.com
Episode Description -
Most people drift their way into worse health, weaker relationships, and a life they don’t recognize. Dane Sanders says the answer isn’t another burst of motivation—it’s an operating system for becoming stronger in the middle of real life.
Tom Rowland sits down with Dane, founder of Men and Women of Discomfort (MWOD), for a conversation about why voluntary discomfort matters, how drift quietly erodes your gains, and why the hardest parts of life are often the ones that change you most. If you’ve ever started strong on a challenge, a fitness plan, or a personal reset—only to watch it fade—this episode will hit close to home.
Visit The Website: https://www.mwod.io/
You’ll discover:
Why Dane says MWOD is more than a challenge—and how it differs from programs built around a finish line
The difference between the drift and the storm, and why both are inevitable
How MWOD uses daily check-ins, weekly challenges, and a 12-week cadence to build momentum
The CREDO framework: commit, release, embrace, define, and own it
Why discomfort doesn’t have to be physical to be transformational
How a challenge called Ghostbusters helped people pursue forgiveness, reconnection, and meaningful conversations
Dane also shares how MWOD began with his friend Tim Kruger. Tim’s battle with cancer brought home a powerful idea: practice voluntary discomfort before involuntary discomfort chooses you. That became a turning point—transforming a fitness experiment into a lasting philosophy about faith, purpose, and becoming the kind of person who can handle what comes next.
This conversation goes far beyond workouts. It’s about identity, belonging, resilience, and the small choices that shape your future—whether in your health, relationships, work, faith, or the conversations you’ve been avoiding.
Dane Sanders is the founder of Men and Women of Discomfort, a community built around deliberate discomfort, accountability, and sustainable growth. The goal: to become strong and awake for love’s sake.
If you’re tired of starting over and ready to build something that lasts, this conversation is for you.

| Jere Hartman | "RangeOars Row" | Ep. 1029 | 22 sept. 2026 | 01:06:36 | |
Jere Hartman spent 19 years in the Army, including time as an Army Ranger, then went straight into the FBI's Terrorist Screening Center. Two years later he'd put on 50 pounds and was spending his nights sitting in the dark. So he walked into his performance review and resigned.
What came next was a six-month thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (trail name: Clincher, and he'll tell you why). Ten years later, he answered a Facebook post in the Ranger community and signed on to row across the Pacific Ocean.
In this episode, Jere and I talk about:
Why leaving a structured military life with no transition nearly broke him
Trail magic, trail families, and what the AT gave him that he didn't expect
Rowing from Monterey to Kauai in 35 days with a five-man crew in the World's Toughest Row
Keeping the boat's water maker alive after it broke on day three
Riding out 30-foot seas at night in a rowboat, and the crew pact that "it's 100% or we don't make that decision"
Weeks of glowing phosphorescence, hundreds of dolphins, and a pint of rum split five ways
Corsair Racing, the nonprofit he helped build to get veterans out on the ocean, and the crew now training for a 3,000-mile Atlantic row from La Gomera to Antigua
Coaching CrossFit in Chattanooga, and why he believes it's for everyone, no matter how beat up you are

| Rhett Morris | Beyond Borders Outfitters | Ep. 1028 | 16 sept. 2026 | 01:24:14 | |
Captain Rhett Morris of morefishflorida.com has guided the greater Charlotte Harbor area for three decades — and he kept a catch log almost every day of it. That data now tells a story the numbers on Florida's coast are backing up: a steady, decades-long decline in snook, redfish, and trout that's accelerated since the mid-2000s.
In this episode, Rhett walks Tom through what his records reveal, what actually caused the collapse (the record-shattering 2018 red tide, the nitrogen overload, and the algae that smothered the seagrass), and why Hurricane Milton turned out to be one of the best things to happen to the fishery in years. Then he lays out his proposal: treat Charlotte Harbor as a test zone, change the redfish and snook slot limits, and let the fishery become its own hatchery. It's not a mandate — it's the start of a conversation, and it comes with a real economic case for why even the developers should care.
If it resonates, there's a petition at morefishflorida.com. As Rhett says, sharing it may matter even more than signing it.

| David Moss | The Nature Conservancy | Ep. 1027 | 09 sept. 2026 | 01:11:38 | |
Red snapper season in the South Atlantic got shut down the night before it opened — and most anglers still don't really know why. In this one, I sit down with David Moss, Fisheries Project Manager for The Nature Conservancy, to break the whole thing down in plain English: what an EFP actually is, the lawsuit that closed the season, why managers and anglers see two completely different oceans, and the surprising reason keeping your spots secret might be the very thing costing you fishing days.
David's a Florida-born fisherman first and a fisheries guy second, and he makes the case for why the catch data you throw away — including the days you get skunked — is exactly what the fishery needs to open more seasons, not fewer.
We get into:
Why red snapper are stacked up in the Atlantic but you can't keep one
How "rare event species" like tilefish and snowy grouper get shortchanged by old data
The truth about whether your secret numbers are actually safe in reporting apps
Gulf vs. Atlantic red snapper — two fisheries, same fish
The Goliath grouper problem everyone sees but no one can prove
How to actually get involved if you're fed up

| Capt Dylan Hubbard | Hubbard's Marina | Ep. 1026 | 02 sept. 2026 | 01:24:53 | |
Everybody keeps asking me about red snapper — why they're everywhere and you can't keep them in one place, and nowhere to be found in another. So I brought on someone who lives on both sides of that fight.
Dylan Hubbard is VP of Hubbard's Marina in Madeira Beach — a fourth-generation, nearly 100-year-old operation — and he's also president of the Florida Guides Association, VP of the Charter Fisherman's Association, and chair of the Gulf Council Reef Fish Advisory Panel. He's one of the only guests we've had who's both a working charter operator and deeply embedded in the federal fisheries decision-making process. That combination makes this one of the clearest breakdowns of what's really happening with our fishery that I've heard.
In this conversation we get into:
Why red snapper is a Gulf success story but a crisis in the South Atlantic — and how discard mortality quietly shrinks the season every year
The EFP fight, the 11th-hour injunction, and MRIP vs. state (SRFS) data — why "letting them guess" hurts anglers
How his grandfather's handwritten notes from a 1988 meeting let Dylan change federal law in two meetings to save his 39-hour trips
The gag grouper rebound, the lag between what we see on the water and what the science says, and where AI is starting to change fisheries research
Getting fired by his own dad — and reopening the marina five days after Hurricane Helene
"If you're not in the room, you're on the menu." If you care about the future of the fishery, this is the one to watch.

Rich Hernandez can do 5,000 push-ups without ever touching his knees — and he's
chasing a world record that hasn't been broken since 1980. But as he tells me
here, it was never really about the push-ups. This time we're in person, right
after a morning workout together, digging into how an MIT engineer with a Yale
MBA walked away from the aerospace world to preach the gospel of hard work — and
why the same process that took him from 40 push-ups to 5,000 (and a 7-minute
plank to a 4-hour one) applies just as much to your business, your parenting,
and anything else you're trying to get better at.

| Dr. John Carlson | NOAA Fish Biologist and Shark Assessment Expert | Ep. 1023 | 12 août 2026 | 01:14:54 | |
Shark depredation is when a shark eats a hooked or landed fish before an angler can bring it in, and in Florida it has become one of the most contested issues on the water. In this episode I sit down with Dr. John Carlson, a research fish biologist with NOAA Fisheries who has spent 25 years studying shark and sawfish populations, to work through the question anglers keep asking me: how can there be too many sharks and a global shark decline at the same time?

Andy Strelcheck is the Regional Administrator for NOAA Fisheries’ Southeast Regional Office, working with federal fisheries throughout the Gulf, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean. I brought Andy back on the podcast to get a direct explanation of what happened when the proposed South Atlantic red snapper season was stopped less than a day before Florida’s opening date.
We break down exempted fishing permits, recreational catch surveys, discard mortality, descending devices, fish tagging, red snapper stock assessments, and the frustrating situation where fishermen can see more fish while receiving less access. Andy also explains why anglers should participate in fishing surveys, how missing information increases uncertainty, and why there is encouraging news for several grouper and snapper fisheries.

| Ed Emory | Snake River Guide | Ep. 1016 | 24 juin 2026 | 00:54:48 | |
Ed Emory is a fishing guide on the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho who guides out of South Fork Lodge. He has guided for 36 seasons and logged about 67,000 guided river miles, which he points out is roughly 2.8 times the circumference of the globe with clients in his boat. He is known for targeting and landing exceptionally large brown trout and for an analytical, psychology-driven approach to guiding and fighting big fish. How big was the brown trout Ed Emory's client caught on the South Fork?
The fish measured 30.5 inches, with a girth Ed describes as about as big around as his thigh and a pectoral fin large enough to cover his client's entire hand. It is the largest brown trout he has landed on the South Fork since his 31.2-inch brown in 2011, and it cleared the 30-inch mark that Idaho recognizes for a catch-and-release state record. The fish was caught, measured, photographed, and released on film.
Who caught the 30.5-inch brown trout?
A client named Caroline Langdale, whom Ed describes as a petite angler from Georgia, on her first-ever day fishing the South Fork. She turkey hunts and had caught saltwater fish such as tarpon and redfish before, and Ed credits that saltwater experience for how she fought and landed the fish, keeping the rod bent at the right angle and sliding the fish sideways into the net rather than trying to lift it.
What is Ed Emory's approach to fighting a big trout? Ed treats it like a prize fight. He throws a jab to test what the fish will do, reads its response, and refuses to accelerate the fight, letting the fish tire itself rather than forcing it. He stresses situational awareness, knowing the river bottom, the hazards, and the depth where the fish lives, and keeping big fish in the 10-to-15-foot water they are comfortable in rather than dragging them into deep holes. He says landing big fish is mostly between the ears.
Why is the South Fork producing so many big fish this year?
Ed's theory is that the population of smaller guardian fish is near a historic low, so a fly reaches the largest trout instead of being intercepted by the many smaller fish that would normally feed first. With fewer fish between the angler and the big ones, anglers are gaining access to trophy browns that usually sit concealed at depth, feeding on the easy food that drifts to them.
What is the conservation debate on the South Fork of the Snake River? Idaho Fish and Game has worked to remove rainbow and hybrid trout, including by electroshocking, which was halted when funding ran out, to favor cutthroat. Ed argues the river is no longer a native cutthroat fishery but a wild, naturally reproducing one, since hatchery Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat have passed through the dam from Palisades Reservoir for decades. He favors cutthroat-centric management, such as placing egg boxes with Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat eggs in the river, and letting anglers decide what they keep.
| Seafue | Fortnite Streamer Turned Fishing Addict | Ep. 1015 | 17 juin 2026 | 01:15:34 | |
Tfue was the most-watched Fortnite streamer on the planet. Eleven million Twitch followers. Eleven million YouTube subscribers. Over 1.7 billion views. And in 2023, he walked away from it all. Not because he failed. Because he was done.
Now he's running 120 miles offshore in the Gulf chasing swordfish, flats fishing in Indian Rocks Beach, and building one of the fastest-growing fishing channels on YouTube under the name C-Few.
I really loved this conversation. Some of the moments that stood out to me:
- The way Tfue talks about gaming and fishing as two sides of the same obsession — when he's in, he's ALL in. Whether that's streaming 15 hours a day or going 4-for-5 on swordfish before noon.
- His take on what it actually takes to be the best in the world at something — genetics, age, reflexes, mindset — and how a lot of it applies far beyond gaming.
- The moment he realized a flats boat was too dangerous for anyone he invited on it, and how that pushed him into bigger water and bigger fish.
- How he learned sword fishing almost entirely on his own — YouTube, trial and error, and just going 120 miles out into the Gulf until he figured it out.
- His honest answer when I asked if competitive gaming and competitive fishing are comparable. He doesn't sugarcoat it. The answer surprised me.

| Jameson Reeder | Shark Attack Survivor | Ep. 1014 | 10 juin 2026 | 01:29:51 | |
Jameson Reeder is a shark attack survivor who was bitten while snorkeling in waist-deep water at a sandbar in the Florida Keys. After five years of living in the Florida Keys with his wife, a perfect day on the water turned into a life-threatening emergency when a shark grabbed his leg. In this powerful episode, Jameson reveals the immediate moments of the attack, the extensive emergency medical treatment and multiple surgeries that followed, and the long road to physical and mental recovery. What's most remarkable is his perspective: despite the trauma, he maintains deep respect for sharks and has become an advocate for ocean safety awareness and marine conservation.

| Dustin Nichols | Caffeine Overdose, BMX Comeback at 54, and the State of Kayak Fishing | EP 1012 | 28 mai 2026 | 00:59:05 | |
Episode 1012 of the Tom Rowland Podcast is a catch-up conversation with kayak fishing tournament angler Dustin Nichols that turned into something I did not see coming — a 192 BPM heart rate at 51, the energy drinks that put him in the back of an ambulance, the BMX comeback that has taken 50 pounds off him at 54, and his honest take on where kayak fishing is headed.
Five years ago Dustin came on the podcast for the first time. I had him back this week to find out what had happened since. What he told me ended up being one of the more honest comeback stories I have heard on this show in a while, and I wanted to share why.
| Jamie Howard | Chasing Silver, Running the Coast & the Cameras Off Podcast | Ep. 1011 | 20 mai 2026 | 01:00:08 | |
Jamie Howard is the filmmaker behind Chasing Silver, Running the Coast, Location X, Black Salmon, and Bass The Movie — and yesterday he sat down with me to talk about his new podcast Cameras Off, the Tarpon Diaries series he's launching inside it, and where the show is going next as it expands beyond fishing
Jamie and I have been crossing paths for more than twenty years. He pulled me into Location X back when I was figuring out the film world, and he's still the kind of person who looks at the water like he's seeing it for the first time. That's part of why his films land.
The reason I want you to listen to this one is simple. The article gives you the topics. The audio gives you Jamie — his timing, his hedge, the way he laughed when I told him I thought there was a foot in the frame of his most famous shot. None of that translates to text. Hear it from him.
Follow Cameras Off on Spotify — Season 1 is out, the Tarpon Diaries series drops on Thursdays, and the channel is widening out to include adventure photographers, Red Bull wingsuit flyers, and outdoor stories beyond fishing. Animation is rolling out on Jamie's Instagram as well. Everything is also at howardfilms.com.

| Bouncer Smith | Legendary Miami Guide and Author | Ep. 1009 | 15 avr. 2026 | 01:14:46 | |
Bouncer Smith is one of the true legends of South Florida fishing — a charter captain, author, conservationist, and storyteller with over six decades on the water. He's written five books, guided thousands of anglers, and pioneered techniques that changed the way we rig lures and release fish. And now, in retirement, he's catching some of the best fish of his life.
In this conversation, we get into Bouncer's recent adventures — from bass fishing in the headwaters to landing two 100-pound tarpon in one afternoon on 80-pound braid in Biscayne Bay. We talk about the five biggest changes in fishing over the last 60 years, from depth finders to forward-facing sonar, from monofilament to braid, from J hooks to circle hooks. We get into his genius circle-hook-in-front-of-the-lure rigging method, solunar tables and how to use them, and Project CSafe — the massive conservation and fishing event happening April 17–26 in Grant, Florida, presented by Star Brite.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
Bouncer landing two tarpon over 100 pounds in retirement — and admitting he thought those days were behind him
His breakdown of the five biggest changes in fishing: electronics, GPS, bottom mapping, braid, and modern drags
The circle hook rigging trick that took his tarpon catch rate from 10% to over 90%
His commitment to solunar tables and how he's used moon rise timing to predict bite windows for decades
The power of listening to every angler — because a bass technique might solve a tarpon problem

| Nick Honachefsky | "Saltwater Underground" | Ep. 1008 | 08 avr. 2026 | 01:18:44 | |
Nick Cheskey is the host of Saltwater Underground, now in its
sixth season on ESPN2, Discovery Channel, Sportsman's Channel,
and Waypoint TV. He's one of the most versatile anglers in the
country — a guy who grew up fishing, surfing, and ice skating
on frozen Jersey swamps, and who pioneered surf shark fishing
on the Northeast coast before anyone else was even trying.
In this conversation, Nick and I catch up after three years and
cover a lot of ground — from saltwater rivers freezing over in
central Jersey to thresher sharks hunting with their tails to
prehistoric megalodon teeth in freshwater streams. This one goes
everywhere, and I loved every minute of it.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation:
- Nick describing the first night he ever tried surf shark fishing
in 1998 — paddling bunker bait out on a surfboard in the dark,
alone, and having a thresher tail come whipping out of the water
right next to him
- How thresher sharks actually hunt — corralling bait with that
massive tail and using it like a weapon, which is unlike anything
else in the ocean
- The species showing up in Jersey waters that have no business
being there — tarpon off Cape Cod, cobia inshore, pompano in
the surf, and Spanish mackerel everywhere
- Nick's obsession with fossil hunting in New Jersey freshwater
streams and finding a Hell Pig tooth that nobody had ever
pulled out of Jersey before — 15 to 30 million years old
- A real conversation about the future of fishing media, social
media's effect on spot burning and content quality, and why
both of us think the pendulum is starting to swing back toward
expertise

Monty Burke writes about the best of the best — college football coaches, saltwater fly fishing legends, and the obsessed individuals who reach the top of whatever they pursue. In this episode of the Tom Rowland Podcast, Monty breaks down what Pete Carroll got right at USC that he couldn't pull off in the NFL, why Steve Huff at 80 years old is still one of the most fascinating people in fly fishing, and what the relationship between a great guide and an elite angler has in common with a great coach and his players. They also get into AI and why Monty thinks the removal of friction — of doing hard things — is one of the worst things that could happen to a generation trying to find purpose. Honest, wide-ranging, and the kind of conversation you'll still be thinking about the next time you're on the water.

| Michael Holland | M I N D B O D Y E N E R G Y | Ep. 1004 | 22 janv. 2026 | 01:15:46 | |
Mike Holland is the creator of the MINDBODY Energy Movement — a daily practice that blends movement, breathwork, and mindset into a simple system you can do anywhere, with zero equipment. In just 8 months, Mike went from posting on a personal account to building an audience of nearly 900,000 people, all around one mission: help people take control of their health and live life on their own terms.
In this conversation, we talk about why movement is medicine, why breath is the bridge between mind and body, and how discipline compounds the same way money does — one small decision at a time. We also get into what Mike’s doing with ManyChat, why he wasn’t charging anyone while it was blowing up, and how he’s building an app to turn this into a real community.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
The simplest reframe that changes everything: you don’t have to do it — you get to do it.
Why breathwork can unlock performance (and how it keeps you calm even when your heart rate is high).
Movement + rhythm = clarity — the way your brain settles when your body gets in sync.
“What you consume is what you become.” Not just food — information, people, and energy.
The real goal isn’t followers. It’s a million people taking ownership of their health.

| Mike Loughran | "Fish Like Mike" | Ep. 1003 | 14 janv. 2026 | 01:03:19 | |
Fish Like Mike — is a former PE teacher and varsity hockey coach from Buffalo, New York who built a massive audience by doing what he genuinely loves: getting outside, learning the woods, and telling the story like a buddy would. He started fishing in high school with a cheap kayak and a GoPro duct-taped to a hockey stick… and years later, he made the big call to step away from a “safe” career to go all-in on content, travel, and the freedom to fish on a Tuesday when nobody’s around.
In this conversation, we get into the real stuff: the grind of teaching + coaching + building content on weekends, the moment he knew it was time to rip the band-aid off, why Instagram views don’t pay like people think, and why those “little creeks” in New York might be one of the most underrated fisheries in the country.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
How he built his entire audience with almost no “fancy” gear — just consistency, curiosity, and telling the truth on camera.
The mindset shift from “posting videos” to “building a business” — and why reputation matters more than follower count.
The possum video lesson: when your face is on camera and you teach like a friend, people stick around.
Great Lakes tributaries that can give you a 5-pound smallmouth and a 30-inch “steelhead” in the same day.
Leaving teaching wasn’t about money — it was about freedom, time, and not waiting until retirement to live the life.

| Aquaphobix: The Full Q&A! | Ep. 1002 | 02 janv. 2026 | 00:54:14 | |
As saltwater anglers, we've all dealt with the ugly reality of bottom paint. You spend six figures on a beautiful boat, only to have someone slap what looks like an "ugly wig" on the hull. Then you're paying divers constantly to scrape it clean, dealing with toxic chemicals leaching into our fishing waters, and repeating this expensive, environmentally damaging cycle every single year.
But what if I told you there's a game-changing technology that could eliminate bottom paint forever while actually protecting our marine environment? That's exactly what Dan Dillon from Aquaphobix has developed, and it's unlike anything I've seen in 30+ years of saltwater fishing.

| Sam Root | Fishing Photographer and Social Media Star | Ep. 1001 | 17 déc. 2025 | 01:05:01 | |
Sam Root is a content creator in the fishing industry and a key part of the team at Pure Fishing — one of the biggest fishing companies on the planet. We go way back (forums, early DSLR days, the first years of Saltwater Experience), and in this conversation we get into what’s actually changed in fishing media… and what hasn’t.
We talk about the death of gatekeeping, why attention spans are getting weird (3 seconds or 3 hours), why polished “commercial-looking” videos often underperform, how AI is already changing photo/video work, and the wild travel stories that remind you fishing is fishing — whether you’re in the Everglades or 30 hours from the nearest runway.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
The gatekeeping is gone — and that’s a blessing and a whole new kind of grind.
High-end production can actually hurt performance because people can smell an ad in half a second.
New product hype sells… until it doesn’t — credibility is what carries the long game.
AI is powerful, but the “soulless” stuff gets blocked fast (and I’m with him on that).
The Everglades might be the best “short trip” fishing on earth — but the sharks have changed the whole release game.
00:00 Introduction + “Apollo Beach Sam”
02:05 How we first met (forums, early show days)
06:10 Gatekeeping is dead — and what replaced it
10:35 3 seconds vs 3 hours (attention span whiplash)
14:10 How Sam ended up at Pure Fishing (and what he does)
18:15 What actually sells product now (and why “polished” can flop)
23:40 YouTube/shorts vs longform — and how channels get confused
28:55 Travel fishing: Indonesia, Seychelles, Amazon, Argentina
37:40 The “sketchy mothership” story (28 hours back in a storm)
41:30 Weirdest food: sea turtle eggs + coconut crabs
46:10 AI in fishing content (Nano Banana + photo fixes)
52:15 Sharks in the Everglades/Keys — what’s happening?
58:05 Rapid fire: best, worst, strangest, bucket list

| The Best of the Tom Rowland Podcast | Ep. 1000 | 03 déc. 2025 | 00:52:55 | |
When I started the Tom Rowland Podcast, I never imagined we’d hit this milestone… and definitely not with a lineup like this.
To celebrate 1,000 episodes, we put together a best-of conversation reel featuring some of the most impactful guests to ever sit down with me:
Bill Dance – The legend himself. We talk about joy, longevity, and why fishing is still fun after a lifetime on the water.
Michael Chandler – UFC superstar. Discipline, doubt, and what it really means to bet on yourself when the lights are brightest.
Monte Burke – Author of Lords of the Fly. The obsession, history, and culture behind chasing truly giant fish.
Michael Waddell – “Bone Collector.” Family, faith, hunting culture, and how to stay grounded when the cameras turn on.
Chris Fischer – Founder of OCEARCH. Great white sharks, conservation, and why wild places still matter.
These aren’t just highlight clips. They’re the moments that stuck with me long after we stopped recording – the stories, one-liners, and mindset shifts that changed how I think about fishing, work, family, and life.
The real Bill Dance behind the bloopers and the TV fame
How Michael Chandler turns fear into fuel before he walks into the Octagon
Why Monte Burke thinks certain anglers cross the line from “interested” to “obsessed”
Michael Waddell’s take on raising kids, building a brand, and still loving the hunt
How Chris Fischer and OCEARCH are using science and storytelling to protect the ocean
If you’ve listened since the early days: thank you. If you’re new here: this is a great place to start.

| Chris James | "A Healthy Alternative" | Ep. 999 | 26 nov. 2025 | 01:29:07 | |
Chris James is a self-taught holistic wellness coach and the creator of A Healthy Alternative, a fasting-based wellness community that’s helped thousands of people lose 100+ pounds, reverse disease symptoms, and feel at home in their body again. A Healthy Alternative+1
In this conversation, we get into how Chris helped his brother lose 100 pounds in just 90 days without loose skin, how his own mysterious infection disappeared when nothing else worked, and why strategic fasting and hydration might be the most underrated tools for getting truly healthy — not just “less sick.”
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
When Chris broke down how his brother went from 420 pounds to losing 100 pounds in 90 days — and what they learned about autophagy, plateaus, and that “shrink week” in a long fast.
His story of battling a 10-year infection doctors couldn’t diagnose, trying every pill and test, and finally seeing it disappear when he changed his diet and started water fasting.
The way he explains distilled water, hydration, and cellular water — and why so many of us are drinking water but still walking around dehydrated and tired. A Healthy Alternative
How extended fasts triggered intense cravings, emotional memories, and even childhood foods — and what that taught him about the emotional side of eating and detox.
His vision for wellness centers with fasting support, testing, and gardens—places where normal people can actually succeed with fasting instead of trying to white-knuckle it alone.
If you’ve ever wondered:
“Is fasting just starving myself?”
“Can you really lose 100+ pounds without loose skin?”
“What about electrolytes, distilled water, and training while fasted?”
“How do I use fasting if I’m not obese but want less inflammation and better performance?”
…this episode is going to give you a ton to think about and some very practical starting points.

| Taylor Shropshire | FishCast | Ep. 998 | 19 nov. 2025 | 00:59:55 | |
What happens when you give an oceanographer a pile of ROFFS® fishing reports, decades of ocean data, and access to Simrad® electronics? You get FishCast® — an AI-powered offshore fishing forecast that can highlight high-probability zones days before you ever leave the dock.
In this conversation, Dr. Taylor Shropshire from Fathom Science and I break down how FishCast works on Simrad MFDs, how 3-day, 3-hour forecasts help you plan offshore trips, and why AI should be a tool that makes fishing more fun rather than a shortcut that replaces hard-earned experience. We also talk about ocean models, hurricane prediction, safety, and what better forecasting might mean for anyone who lives and fishes on the coast.

How a pool coating ended up on boats — and why the blowtorch is part of the magic
The honest breakdown of copper paints, “ablative” flakes, and microplastics in our water and fish
Certifications that actually matter (not greenwashing): marine life and drinking-water safe
Real-world cases: SeaWorld exhibits, a 102-year-old public pool, and what marinas care about (hint: sanding revenue)

| Capt. Scott Moore | "Moore Fishing" | Ep. 995 | 15 oct. 2025 | 01:33:17 | |
Captain Scott Moore is a West Coast Florida legend — 50+ years on the water, a conservation bulldog, and the namesake of Manatee County’s finest public boat ramp. He’s guided through countless cycles of boom-and-bust fisheries, fought for preserves, and helped push pivotal policy from the snook/redfish era to today’s water-quality battles.
We talk hurricanes and recovery on Anna Maria Island, why mangroves are the best windbreak on earth, the real “groceries” fish need, and how law, science, and local knowledge collide on the water. We also get into gear evolution (from nylon cast nets to braid), guiding as the entertainment business, snook lights, canal aeration, aquaculture at Mote Marine, and why respectful advocacy beats shouting every time.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
The community response after four feet of storm surge — and how a true island steps up.
Why trimmed mangroves often fare better in storms, and what black mangroves need to survive.
“It’s about the groceries”: managing forage and estuaries, not just gamefish.
Guiding wisdom: safety, teaching, hospitality — then fish.
The net-ban era, law enforcement realities, and what policy actually moves the needle.
Practical water quality fixes: septic conversions, canal aeration, turf buffers, and realistic tradeoffs.
Honoring legacy: why the county named a boat ramp after Scott — and what that really means.

| Carey Chen | Legendary Marine Artist | Ep. 994 | 01 oct. 2025 | 01:21:41 | |
Carey Chen is a world-traveled marine artist and lifelong fisherman who turned a passion for blue water into a career—painting billfish from memory and chasing giants with some of the best crews on earth. Born in Los Angeles to Jamaican parents, raised in Jamaica, and later based in Miami, Carey went from motorcycles and video stores to fishing tournaments across the Caribbean, licensing deals, and live painting at world-class events.
In this conversation, we get into how a first sailfish on a kite lit the fuse, why sonar is changing offshore fishing (and why he thinks it’ll soon be on every boat), what it’s like to fish with the Bad Company program, and how a lifetime of travel turned into 3,000+ paintings “stuck in his head.”
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
The first sailfish on a kite off Miami—and how one fish can change your life
From fisherman to painter: leaving retail, painting live, and getting “discovered” at boat shows
Fishing the world with Bad Company: Mag Bay marlin numbers that sound impossible until you see them
The sonar debate: why new tech doesn’t replace skill—but rewards crews who master it
Big-fish mindset: chasing granders, tagging programs, and letting the big breeders go

| Jameson Reeder | 13 Year Old Shark Attack Survivor | Ep. 987 | 06 août 2025 | 01:38:26 | |
Jameson Reeder Jr. is a shark attack survivor, amputee, surfer, and one of the most courageous young men I’ve ever spoken with. At just 10 years old, Jameson was attacked by a 9-foot bull shark while snorkeling in the Florida Keys. What followed was a miraculous chain of events involving strangers, a nurse who swam through shark-infested waters, a faster boat, and a powerful spiritual encounter that Jameson says saved his life. He and his father Jamon recount the entire journey in their new book, Rescue at the Reef.
In this conversation, we talk about trauma, faith, family, facing your fears, and how this young man chose purpose over fear—and joy over bitterness.
Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were:
The unbelievable moment Jameson said, “Jesus is going to save me,” moments after losing his leg
Jamon’s impossible decision to hand off his son to a stranger on a faster boat
Jameson’s vision of Jesus and the peace that carried him through the ride back
The family’s return to the reef just weeks later to reclaim joy and face fear
How Jameson now comforts others with trauma, proving strength can come in small packages

| Mark The Shark: The Darth Vader Of Sportfishing! | 09 juil. 2025 | 01:16:20 | |
I have followed Mark Quartiano who is better known as Mark The Shark for a couple of years. To say that Mark is controversial is an understatement. Mark seems to relish the role as the bad boy of Sportfishing and referred to himself as the Darth Vader of Sportfishing.
This was interesting to me because he also seems to have a lot of kind of contrary opinions and actions to being the badboy. For example, Mark has no problem killing big sharks and posting the pictures on Instagram, however after talking to him for a while I also learned that he has tagged more sharks than anyone in the world.
He doesn't just kill sharks for no reason, they are sent to biologists or he takes them to the homeless shelter.
I wanted to learn more about what made him tick so I took a chance and sent him a message. To my surprise, he responded right away and we set up the podcast even though he didn't know what a podcast was. When I met him at his iconic office in Miami it was literally jammed with shark jaws, pictures stacked 2 feet high of previous catches were all over his desk. There was so much stuff in his office that it was impossible to take it all in.
Mark sat down and talked about anything I wanted to talk about and by the end of the conversation I knew way more about Mark the Shark than before. I understood where he was coming from and I understood his motivations for what he does.
We discussed sharks, of course, tournaments, water quality and family as well as many other subjects. We may disagree on a few things but we also agree on probably way more than we disagree. In fact, at the end of the conversation I really liked Mark and respected his work ethic that has him working 450 trips a year…every year.
There is no doubt that this will be the most controversial podcast I have ever done, but I am very happy that I get a chance to talk to Mark and was very impressed with his willingness to do this interview and answer any questions I had.
