video: https://youtu.be/V4r7fCFLP6A

This week in Linux, GNOME 51 is here with a faster, more polished desktop and a long list of upgrades across the environment. Asahi Linux pulled off another major Apple Silicon milestone with M3 Macs. Valve is building one of the wildest compatibility stacks we've seen yet for the Steam Frame. And Open Source projects are now setting traps for AI coding agents that can make lazy submissions snitch on themselves. Plus, Jellyfin 12 is a huge upgrade for self-hosted media. All of this and more on this week's episode, so let's jump into Your Source for Linux GNews and see what's happened This Week in Linux.

Plus, Audacity gets one of its biggest updates in years, OpenShot levels up in a big way, and Linux From Scratch has a brand new release for everyone who thinks installing Linux should require just a little more suffering.

video: https://youtu.be/tksoVnYTz1c

This week in Linux, we learned that NVIDIA might be buying Hugging Face and this AI community platform reportedly rejected extra investment from NVIDIA because they didn't want one company having too much influence. Now NVIDIA may be buying the entire company. Someone dumped more than 125 bug reports into QEMU in under ten minutes, leading one maintainer to call it an effective denial-of-service attack. Debian finished their debate on what to do with AI contributions and their decision was surprising. LibreOffice has a new release where they made it very clear they aren't interested in adding Ai tools to summarize the document you just wrote. Plus Flatpak is getting more than half a million euros to improve Linux app security and sandboxing, so that's awesome. And all of this is happening while Linux celebrates 35 years of the kernel. This is Your Source for Linux GNews so let's see what happened This Week in Linux.

video: https://youtu.be/lBJDyzkJbCI

Linux 7.2 is here with a ton of new kernel improvements. Desktop Linux has crossed a major milestone for usage with more than 10% in North America and 7% globally. Arch Linux has announced some changes they are making to the way the AUR works because of the latest Malware attacks. Plus there's some big KDE news this week. KDE is bringing back LTS support with a much bigger "Bullet-Proof KDE" approach, and Framework has announced the next edition of the Framework Laptop 12 and it's coming with a preinstalled option of Fedora KDE.

There is a LOT happening in the Linux world right now, and some of these stories get pretty wild. So here's Your Source for Linux GNews and see what's happened This Week in Linux.

This week in Linux, was a HUGE week for Linux news and it was also a HUGE week for me because today marks the 10th anniversary of TuxDigital. That's right I started TuxDigital back in 2016 so it's just crazy to think I've been making content for 10 years. Also KDE has a brand new version of their desktop with Plasma 6.6. We've also got a new version of Linux game manager, Lutris. Then we've got an update from the Asahi Linux project for their work on getting Linux on Apple hardware. Later in the show, we've got everyone's favorite with Legal News, although seriously this is good news about Valve winning a lawsuit against a Patent Troll. All of this and more on This Week in Linux, the weekly news show that keeps you up to date with what’s going on in the Linux and Open Source world. This week in Linux, we have a brand new version of the Linux kernel with Linux 6.19. Discord is in the news this week because they decided to roll out age verification to the entire world and received a lot of backlash for it... which is very much deserved. Linux Mint is talking about changing how they do releases of their distros and how they might do fewer of them. Then we'll take a look at the upcoming KDE Linux distro and what they've got cooking in their immutable oven. So there is a fiasco happening with Secure Boot and how it may be affecting Linux users. Also, the EU is proposing a law that is pretty close to being passed that is very scary and a step towards mass surveillance. We'll talk about that. Then also we have some good news and that the Pebble watches are back and we have some beta releases from Linux Mint and Ubuntu Touch as well as SyncThing is back, which is a really cool tool to sync your files across multiple devices. This week in Linux, we've got a bit of bad news from Intel as they abruptly ended Clear Linux out of no where and Arch Linux warned users that malware was found in the AUR. It's not all bad this week though because Wayback is back on the show with the first preview release for keeping X11 desktops alive in our future Wayland powered world. Plus according to one source, Linux usage is even higher than we already thought it was. A couple of episodes ago I reported that we broke the 5% threshold on the US desktop market based on StatCounter data but according to one source it's already climbed passed 6%. What source you ask? The analytics of U.S. federal government websites. Speaking of governments, GitHub is trying to get EU lawmakers to scale Germany’s Sovereign Tech Fund into a EU wide program to fund critical open‑source projects. This week in Linux is packed! It's an extra long episode. So if you were wanting more and more TWIL, then you're going to get it this week because Steam Summer Sale is here and it is torching bank accounts. Fedora developers are talking about getting rid of 32-bit support and there's a little bit of controversy around that. We're going to break all of that down. Also, Fairphone 6 has been announced and it comes with kernel patches, an upstream Linux kernel on day one. Firefox 140 has arrived as the new ESR, and there's also some exciting news coming in the next release of Firefox as well. And later in the show, KDE's Wayland wave is continuing to grow to about 70% of users these days. Kubuntu drops X11 by default, and KDE is working on a slick first run wizard. All of this and more on This Week in Linux, the weekly news show that keeps you up to date with what's going on in the Linux and Open Source world. Now let's jump right into Your Source for Linux GNews.

This week in Linux, was just crazy... I just got back from the Red Hat Summit last night, now I'm making a jam packed episode of TWIL with stuff from the Red Hat Summit like them announcing RHEL 10. While I was out of time, we entered into the Twilight Zone because Microsoft apparently open sourced WSL, kind of. Mozilla announced they are shutting down some services. And the giant guitar company Fender, announced a new music creation tool that, yep, it supports Linux. With the walking through airports, a convention center, and the streets of Boston...my feet hurt but you want TWIL right so I'm powering through to bring you all of this and more on This Week in Linux, the weekly news show that keeps you up to date with what’s going on in the Linux and Open Source world.
