Rambo: First Blood Part 2 is an action movie with an identity crisis. The real battle happens between the film's two credited writers: Sly and Jimmy Cameron. This movie doesn't ever fully commit to what it wants to be or what it wants to comment on, instead choosing to lean heavily on signs and signifiers of good and evil. A far cry from the morally amorphous, deep and intense emotional exploration of the first film. Rambo 2 does ultimately deliver on some excellent and compelling mindless action. Rhinestone is such an interesting outlier in the Stallone cannon in that it is basically a musical and fully a Dolly Parton vehicle. A classic fish out of water story with some zany and silly twists! Dolly radiates in this role. She is compelling every moment she is on screen and her voice is pristine. Not to mention the 18 track soundtrack she wrote for this movie which is fantastic. Really this is an episode dedicated to Dolly Parton. Rambo the icon does a great disservice to Rambo the main character from First Blood - a fascinating portrayal of a Vietnam war vet and the depths of PTSD along with a full throated critique of authoritative over reaching structures of power. It's a riveting and gripping adventure movie with realistic high stakes and it coupled with such a compelling dramatic story of a hurt and damaged human. Beautiful film. Rocky III continues the familiar in-world movie trope of beginning the film with the glorious ending of the last film. At this time in 1982 we get an interesting parallel where both the character of Rocky and Stallone the actor have transcended into super stardom and this movie sort of winks at the audience a bit with some knowing internal Rocky universe acknowledgments. Kays returns to Rocky analysis duties providing the brothers with some compelling parallels between Thirsty For More fav Schwartzy (Arnold) and Sly at this time. And thus the true cross comparisons between these two actors can truly begin.

Nighthawks is a gritty cop drama with an international terrorist twist. Originally intended to be part 3 of The French Connection this film has an amazing breakout Rutger Hauer performance and an ok Sly performance with excellent back up by Billy Dee. It is a strange movie tonally. Never quite gets there, but somehow manages to be gripping until the very end. Get into it!!!

Rocky II picks up right where the first Rocky left off. Anything that is lost in the calculated money making decision to create a franchise based on this beloved underdog is made up for by the competent direction and storytelling of Stallone. The stakes are interestingly raised because in the first film Rocky and it was about his hunger to prove himself. This film hits us with an economic reality where Rocky has a taste of the money he could be making and in true American underdog fashion wants to transcend his class. What ultimately makes the sequelization of this series work is Stallone's dedication to and intimate understanding of this iconic character. Interesting movie. Even though Kays was supposed to guest on all of the Rocky episodes he wasn't able to make it this episode so we had an impromptu guest replacement with T4M official 3rd host Leila

Paradise Alley is a weird 70s movie written and directed by Sly. This is when he was still trying to be Pacino. Also it’s all about 3 brothers. And fans of the show know that we love brothers. It’s an unusual and zany film that works really well despite some tonal problems. The premise is that three working class Italian American brothers are trying to make it in 1940’s NYC. Very fun episode!

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a mess. Everyone knows it. The CGI is weird, the anthropomorphic animals are off putting and we have the inter-dimensional beings fiasco. However this movie does a lot of things right: the casting, performances and stunts are all great. This more modern iteration goes to great lengths to maintain the integrity of the character of Indy and it is successful, but somewhat haphazardly so. This episode is actually incredible. We have the triumphant return of 3rd host Leila! Who is back to provide some biting critiques, sober observations and hilarious commentary. Strap in for this one because it is a wild ride and much less disappointing than the actual movie.

Last Crusade is the best one. The movie and franchise are enriched by the complex father/son relationship that is effortlessly woven into the search for the holy grail. Some might even say that the holy grail turns out to be their rekindled relationship. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the most racist Indy film. By far. So much so that it was banned in India when it was released. And rightfully so. But it has some classic beloved characters in the trio of Indy, Shortround and Willie. There are some redeeming qualities as this movie is well directed and fun. It plays out almost like a video game with non-stop action and fun. But it is extremely racist and colonially fetishistic. Almost outrageously so. Enjoy hearing the brothers pan and scan this movie.

The last official episode of the Alien franchise mini dive! And what a note to end on! AvP: Requiem is a weird mid 2000s Alien and Predator movie masquerading as teen horror thriller/disaster movie. It's sort of like if someone tried to mash up Riverdale/Scream/Armageddon and then just put Aliens and Predators. The movie answers a bunch of questions that no one asked such as: What would happen if a Predator/Alien hybrid forcibly impregnated people at the maternity ward with triplet aliens that bust out of a preggo belly? Another question that is answered is: What would happen if we just callously got a small vulnerable child facehugged? For no reason. Anyway the gang has a lot of fun eye-rolling to this movie while providing a veritable cornucopia of fresh references and drops in this ultimately disappointing campy sequel! Enjoy!!

What could we possibly say about Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" that hasn't already been said by a million online think-pieces and deep youtube divers? A lot apparently. In many ways Prometheus is the perfect movie to hate because it encapsulates just how spectacular a failure can be. You can have a brilliant well directed piece of shit especially if you trust Damon Lidelof to write your script! This movie is profoundly shitty. But one must not gloss over the profundity of its shittiness. It is a brilliant exemplification of that tired cliche: so bad it's good. Except with Prometheus it's actually so bad: it's legendary. This conversation about this movie makes for the greatest almost standalone episode of the series! Brilliant talk! Jolly good fun! Enjoy!

Alien Resurrection is a movie that needs to justify its own existence to its audience especially on the heels of Ripley's ultimate sacrifice. But what better way to continue our heroine's story than to lean into the Christ metaphor and resurrect her with late 90s-era cloning hysteria? Jean Pierre Jeunet earns his audience trust in this film by striking a decidedly goofier tone in this bizarre/grotesque romp that ends up demystifying the alien while honouring the Ripley narrative in a surprisingly satisfying way. Once again we get a stellar ensemble of misfits and some very impersonate-able moments that will leave you thirsty for more. Aleks wears the dunce cap in this ep for losing his audio and causing the gang to rerecord the episode and then having crunchy audio in his re-recording, but he makes up for it by yelling a lot. The gang gives Ripley a fitting send off as they finally complete the Quadrilogy including an emotional tribute from Leila at the end of the episode. You don't want to miss this one!

The final episode of the Jean Pod Van Damme season of the show. The film the brothers chosen for the last episode of the season is The Bouncer. A gritty low budget Euro art film take on the classic Van Damme style plot of 'saving a loved one" This film roots that story in the reality of a working class single father with a sordid past. Van Damme is very stoic Van Damme in this movie. He is kind of intense but very calm and collected. The main crime boss, Jan calls Van Damme a survivor in this movie and honestly that's the perfect way to describe him both on and off screen. An excellent and emotional ending to a fantastic JCVD season!

In another first for the show the brothers cover an original series called: Jean Claude Van Johnson. In this somewhat off beat action comedy Van Damme gets to show a lot of range as the meek Filip, as the badass Van Johnson and as the vulnerable Van Varenberg. Another meta outing for Van Damme that avoids getting stale by really committing to the meta self-parody to the point of sincerity. A very strange an interesting show with a great support cast. Not an episode to miss for fans of JCVD.

Kickboxer Vengeance is an outlier. A remake of a classic JCVD movie that is very dear to the brothers. Kurt and Eric Sloan are back only this time way less charming and interesting! And this time Van Damme is the teacher and the real Tong Po is in jail. One night after a failed attempt to download the remake and record the episode of the show the brothers decide to do a walk and talk preamble where they discuss their expectations for the movie. They have a loose conversation about the institution of remakes in general, comparing biopics to remakes and talking about the merits of a remake with a visionary director vs someone who doesn't have the fire! The brothers have a strikingly opinions about this soft reboot and it plays out over an endearing conversation before and after having seen the movie. Stay for the hilarious jokes.

Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning is a really strange, violent and thoughtful art movie. John Hyams gives the viewer the beloved franchise characters in a meta way using the first film's own mythos to comment back on itself, filmmaking, violence and culture while also just being really cool and fun. Van Damme is subdued, regal and almost godlike in this role while Dolph doles out the enterainment. Scott Adkins does an impressive job at humbly but expertly taking the torch from his revered predecessor. The brothers are joined once again by special guest star Keenan Marr Tamblyn who discusses his new trading card art project that you can find @discodromeart Enjoy this really fun episode!

The brothers took their John Hyams film journey slightly out of order positioning the Universal Soldier: Regeneration episode after the Dragon Eyes ep. This proved to be a smart choice because all of the glimmers of excellence observable in Dragon Eyes were on FULL DISPLAY in Regeneration. A gritty sequel that doesn't focus on the logistics of the scifi aspect for too long. This film takes all the best aspects of the first Universal Soldier film and turns them up. High octane. Dragon Eyes is a little disappointing after the massive performance of our previous film: JCVD but the show must go on! Milenko is really disappointed out of the gate with this movie however Aleks ends up bringing him back around. There's a lot to get excited about this John Hyams feature: Peter Weller gives a strange gonzo performance. JCVD gets "and" credit status! And we get a slew of amazing MMA fighter performances not the least of which is the breakout role of Cung Le! Who does a fantastic job in his first role.

When you all heard that we'd be doing a Van Damme season this was undoubtedly the top movie on your minds. JCVD (2008) is the movie that turned Van Damme into: JCVD... Truly bringing him into the 21st century by giving him an enviable renaissance and a chance to flex his acting biceps. Director Mabrouk el Mechri does a masterful job in capturing the essence of what has made JCVD a lasting global phenomenon and why he has enjoyed a sustained cross-cultural appeal as opposed to some of his other contemporaries. This film has become a model for a perfect gritty indie comeback. Perspective shifting all over the place while playing fast and loose with the fourth wall and an uninterrupted 6 min career defining monologue that could have been its own award winning short film. To quote the Times: Don't give him a blackbelt! Give him an Oscar! The brothers wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. One of the best podcast episodes we've ever done! Big film! JCVD.

Is "In Hell" a metaphorical musing on the pervasiveness and all encompassing dangers of toxic masculinity that affects every single person that comes in contact with it? Is the hell that the title speaks of: a world in which we are all sentenced to a predetermined prison of violence and patriarchy at the hands of many others and sometimes even ourselves included? Milenko seems to think this is the case. Listen as Milenko makes the case for his thesis to a more skeptical Aleks. Listen to the bros dissect veteran JCVD director Ringo Lam's final film with the actor. Classic prison movie set up with many familiar (and sometimes unfortunate) tropes. However this film is able to transcend some tropes as it reaches for greatness ultimately failing, but making a valiant effort. A more heady ep from the bros. Enjoy!

Listen to find out. Back to the movie tho... Ringo Lam's pseudo-scfi action romp doesn't live up to the legendary status of Maximum Risk, but tests the range limitations of its wonderful cast. An extremely watchable highly kinetic film that the brothers loved. Not an episode to miss!

After a brief pause on the JCVD season the bros are back with Inferno (1999). They take the show on another walking ASMR adventure. Join them in the suburbs of southern Ontario as the snow gentle crunches beneath their feet while they discuss this decidedly low budget but interesting film. Rocky director: John G. Avildsen's last feature film. He was reportedly so dismayed by this movie that he asked for an Alan Smithee credit but was ultimately rejected. Inferno is an exercise in semiotics: the good the bad and the ugly. (In this case the ugly being the movie's horrendous racism). A strange late century take on a Western, or maybe more accurately a Southern. We see some familiar T4M faces show up in this one: including Danny Trejo and a surprise Home Alone alum sure to excite the most devoted of our fans.

As many of you have undoubtedly heard just last week there was a failed attempt at an insurrection by white supremacists at the Capitol in the United States. This call to arms was led by outgoing US president and disgrace of a human being Donald Trump who has spent the last four years reinventing the notion of what a piece of shit is. Famed Republican (lite) and our childhood hero Arnold Schwarzenegger (Schwartzy) decided to weigh in on the issue releasing a well produced and compelling rebuke that harkens back to a "simpler" time when deep partisanship could be put away in the service of a common good. The video's message, like Schwartzy himself, comes off as fairly idealistic and naive, but provokes a stimulating conversation that ranges from American politics to attempts at deeper sociological themes with the brothers. And allows them to get more political within the framework of the show's theme!

You loved part one! Now come relive many of your fav moments in a diluted cash grab sequel that despite its vapidness still manages to be pretty gall darn hilarious! The brothers talk more about the way class is represented in this movie through the contrasts of the excesses of the plaza hotel juxtaposed against the poverty stricken pigeon lady. Also she looks like Susan Boyle and Piers Morgan. Revisit your fav dysfunctional family and see the logical conclusion of being consistently neglected as a child! Kevin goes full on antagonistic socio in this film and it's rather interesting. Plus Tim Curry is an absolutely delightful performer. For what this film lacks in spirit it makes up for in decent oneliners and some pretty fun gags! Definitely still Pantheon! Definitely still classic childhood. Just not as good as the first despite what some people try to tell you. Hear the bros make that case in this fucking hilarious episode. Seriously funny ep. Don't miss it! Imagine the first Universal Soldier film without any of the interesting character development and social commentary. Imagine instead all of the camp of the first film turned up to 11, That's what The Return delivers! An exciting lean action romp. This film is not without its merits though. The brothers had no idea that Legionnaire (1998) would be the war time epic melodrama that both of them needed. This subtle slow burn masterpiece was directed Peter MacDonald one of the first directors to really trust Van Damme's acting abilities. It is a thoughtful exploration of various intersections of masculinity and addresses the nuances of the toxicity within all on the back drop of the devastation of imperialism and war. Very thought provoking film. With some amazing casting and great performances. The brothers cannot speak of it highly enough!

Knock Off is a total diamond in the rough. Our second Van Damme pairing with Hong Kong director Tsui Hark. Also our second comically odd Van Damme coupling this time with Happy Madison alum Rob Schneider. This film fires on all cylinders! With wild action, kooky comedy and one of the best theme songs ever written for a movie. The outlandish performance given by Van Damme is enough to make this movie and T4M episode the stuff of legend! While officially the end of Silver Era Van Damme Aleks makes the argument for this to be included in Pantheon Van Damme. Did we mention the theme song?

Double Team is one of those weird late 90s anomalies. Is it a comedy? Is it sci-fi? Is it action? Is it basketball? Also North Korea's most famous ambassador: Dennis Rodman gives a solid debut performance despite what critics and razzie awards say. Ultimately this movie doesn't know what it wants to be and flounders around a bit, but how can you argue with a Mickey Rourke villain performance? You can't that's how.
