Why School Phone Bans Fail: A Principal's Four-Question Test YOUR policy05 Aug 202600:35:51

Send us Fan Mail

I Banned Phones Before My State Did. Here Is What Actually Happened.

Twenty-six states now have laws requiring schools to ban or restrict student cellphone use, and twenty-two of those laws passed in 2025 alone. Florida passed the first one in May 2023. Utah's bell-to-bell ban took effect July 1, 2026. New Jersey's statewide policy takes effect this September. Public support is strong and bipartisan, with 74 percent of American adults backing phone bans during class according to Pew Research.

And a 2025 University of Southern California study found that most students are still using their phones during the school day anyway.

M.A. Aponte is the executive director of a charter school in Gainesville, Florida. He wrote and implemented a phone policy at his school before the state of Florida required one, which means he has been living with this longer than almost anyone covering it.

In this episode he makes an argument that is almost entirely missing from the national conversation: phones are not primarily a distraction problem. He watched students pressure other students into physical fights specifically so the fights could be recorded. Those fights did not happen and then get filmed. They happened because they could be filmed. The phone did not divert behavior. It created behavior that would not otherwise have happened.

That reframes a phone ban from an academic policy into a safety policy.

WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS

The current state of school phone legislation, including which states have bell-to-bell bans, which leave it to districts, and what the early research from Harvard Kennedy School actually shows.

The three distinct problems phones create in a school building: attention, integrity, and incentive. Why the third one is the most serious and the least discussed.

Why phone bans fail. Rules with holes that students find in the first week. Inconsistent enforcement, where one adult who does not enforce does not create one weak classroom but a weak school. Consequences that exist on paper and never in practice. And confusing removing the option with building the skill.

THE BELL TEST, a four-question framework for evaluating any school phone policy:

  B. BOUNDARY. Does the rule have holes students can find?

  E. ENFORCEMENT. Does every adult enforce it identically, every time?

  L. LEVERAGE. Are consequences real, escalating, and actually executed?

  L. LEARNING. Are we building self-regulation or just removing the option?

Aponte also addresses the most common parent objection directly, which is emergency communication, and explains what he got wrong in his own school's first year of enforcement.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many states ban cellphones in schools?

A: As of 2026, twenty-six states have laws requiring school districts to ban or limit student cellphone use, with twenty-two of those laws enacted in 2025 alone. Florida passed the first statewide school phone ban in May 2023. States with the strictest bell-to-bell bans, meaning phones must be off and stored for the entire school day, include Texas, New York, Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama, Nebraska, and Utah. Other states including California, Minnesota, and Ohio require districts to create policies but allow local flexibility. New Jersey's statewide policy takes effect in the 2026-27 school year.

Q: Do school phone bans actually work?

A: Early evidence is mixed. Harvard Kennedy School researchers report that preliminary findings suggest possible long-term benefits for learning outcomes and absenteeism, and teachers consistently report improved focus and fewer disruptions. However, a 2025 University of Southern California study found compliance remains uneven and most students continue using phones during the school day regardless of restrictions. According to charter school director M.A. Aponte, the determining factor is not the ban itself but whether enforcement is consistent across every adult in the building and whether consequences are real and actually executed.

Q: Why do school phone bans fail?

A: Four common reasons. First, the rule has holes, such as allowing phones between classes or at lunch, which teaches students the rule is situational. Second, enforcement is inconsistent, and because students identify which adults enforce and which do not within days, a single non-enforcing adult undermines the policy building-wide. Third, consequences are not real or are written but never executed, which proves to students that the policy is theater. Fourth, schools confuse removing the phone with teaching self-regulation, leaving students unprepared when they graduate into environments where no one takes the device away.

Q: Are phones a safety problem in schools, not just a distraction?

A: Charter school director M.A. Aponte argues the distraction framing is incomplete. He has observed students pressuring other students into physical fights specifically so the fights could be recorded, meaning the phone did not divert existing behavior but created an incentive for violence that would not otherwise have existed. Phones also enable exam cheating at scale, since a photographed test can be distributed to every student taking it later that day. This reframes phone policy from an academic issue into a safety issue.

Q: What about emergencies? Should students have phones to contact parents?

A: This is the most common parent objection to school phone bans. The counterargument from school leaders is that during an actual emergency, students on phones spread panic and misinformation and divert attention from the adult giving safety instructions. A student on a phone during a crisis is generally less safe, not more. Schools implementing bans are expected to maintain a reliable direct channel for communicating with families during emergencies that does not depend on student devices.

Q: What questions should parents ask about their school's phone policy?

A: Five questions. Is the rule bell to bell or are there times phones are allowed? What is the actual consequence for a first, second, and third violation? Is it enforced identically by every teacher? What does the school teach about self-regulation rather than only what it forbids? And in an emergency, how will the school communicate with families without relying on student phones?

27 States Are Writing AI Rules for Your Kid's School. I Run One. Here's What They're All Missing.29 Jul 202600:43:38

Send us Fan Mail

27 States Are Writing AI Rules for Your Kid's School. I Run One. Here's What They're All Missing.

Twenty-seven states have active AI-in-education bills in 2026. Five are already law. Ohio's House Bill 96 required every public, community, and STEM school district in the state, more than 600 of them, to adopt a formal board-approved AI policy by July 1, 2026. California released a statewide model AI policy for districts on June 25. Virginia's law took effect July 1. And on August 5, the Florida State Board of Education takes up a rule that would require public and charter schools to address artificial intelligence in their internet safety policies.

M.A. Aponte is the Executive Director of a charter school in Gainesville, Florida. That Florida rule governs his building.

So this is not policy analysis from the outside. This is a practitioner explaining what happens when a mandate lands on a real school: what he has to tell teachers, how he answers parents, and what he does when a student turns in an essay a machine wrote.

His concern is simple and uncomfortable. A mandate produces a document. It does not produce a change in practice. And if districts confuse those two things, the next two years will be spent celebrating paperwork while nothing improves for a single student.

  WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS

The full national map of school AI legislation, including Ohio's July 1 deadline, California's model policy, Idaho's AI literacy standards, Oklahoma's parental opt-out provision, Maryland Senate Bill 720 requiring teacher professional development, Connecticut's AI instruction mandate, and South Carolina House Bill 5253, which would establish the strongest guardrails in the country.

What is happening in Florida specifically, including the Department of Education's internet safety directive, the August 5 State Board workshop, and the AI Bill of Rights that passed the Florida Senate 37 to 1 before dying in the House.

The strongest argument against moving this fast. MIT professor Justin Reich has said that writing a guide for AI in 2026 is like writing a guide for aviation in 1905, before there were airlines, airports, or commercial flight. Aponte takes that seriously and explains where he lands anyway.

The four things most school AI policies get wrong:
  1. They regulate tools instead of teaching thinking. The real question is not whether a student used AI. It is whether AI helped them think or thought for them.
  2. They assume detection works. AI detection tools flag authentic student work at rates that make them unusable as the basis for a disciplinary finding.
  3. They do not fund the training. Teachers repeatedly report having to navigate AI entirely on their own.
  4. They confuse having a document with having made a change.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Which states require schools to have an AI policy in 2026?

A: As of mid-2026, 27 states have active AI-in-education bills and five have enacted laws. Ohio House Bill 96 required every public, community, and STEM school district to adopt a board-approved AI policy by July 1, 2026. Idaho requires districts and charter schools to create AI policies and ensures AI cannot replace a human teacher. Oklahoma requires age-appropriate AI tools, teacher review of AI output, and parental opt-out. Maryland Senate Bill 720 requires state-provided teacher professional development on AI. Virginia Senate Bill 394 directs its education department to issue guidance. Connecticut mandated AI instruction. California released a model AI policy for districts on June 25, 2026.

Q: What should a school AI policy include?

A: According to the AUDIT framework developed by charter school director M.A. Aponte, an effective school AI policy must address five areas. Assumptions: does it reflect how students actually use AI, including gradual over-reliance rather than only deliberate cheating. Usability: can a teacher apply it in real time without stopping instruction. Detection: does it acknowledge that AI detection software produces false positives, and does it rely on process artifacts and oral defense instead. Instruction: does it teach AI literacy rather than only restricting tools. Training: is there a funded, dated, ongoing professional development plan for teachers.

Q: Is Florida requiring schools to have an AI policy?

A: The Florida Department of Education has directed school districts to add artificial intelligence use to their existing internet safety policies. A rule development workshop was held June 22, 2026, and the Florida State Board of Education scheduled a workshop for August 5, 2026 on a proposed rule requiring public and charter schools to include AI in their internet safety guidelines. Separately, Florida's proposed AI Bill of Rights, which would have restricted student access to AI instructional tools before sixth grade, passed the Florida Senate 37 to 1 but died in the House.

Q: Do AI detection tools work in schools?

A: AI detection tools produce false positives at rates that make them unreliable as the basis for academic dishonesty findings, flagging authentic student work as AI-generated. Education leaders recommend assessment design strategies instead of detection strategies: requiring drafts and revision history, conducting device-free in-class writing, and asking students to orally defend submitted work. A student who wrote the work can explain their reasoning. A student who outsourced it cannot.

Q: What questions should parents ask their school about AI?

A: Five questions. Does our school have an AI policy, and can families read it? Has a classroom teacher reviewed it for whether it is usable during instruction? What happens if a student is wrongly accused by AI detection software? What are we teaching students about AI, not just what are we forbidding? When are teachers trained on this, how often, and who pays for that time? If a school cannot answer the last question, that is the gap that determines everything else.

Q: Why do most school AI policies fail?

A: Four reasons. They regulate tools instead of teaching thinking, so they cannot distinguish between a student using AI to learn and a student using AI to avoid learning. They assume detection is possible when detection software is unreliable. They do not fund teacher training, leaving educators to navigate AI on their own. And they confuse producing a compliant document with changing classroom practice. A mandate produces a document. It does not produce a change in practice.

How Jamie Dimon Thinks: The Mental Habits Behind the World's Most Powerful Banker15 Jul 202600:19:05

How Jamie Dimon Thinks — And What a Former JPMorgan Banker Wants You to Know

I worked at JPMorgan Chase as a banker, under Jamie Dimon. I wasn't in his inner circle, but I was close enough to watch how that organization thought, moved, and made decisions under pressure. And it changed how I think about money, leadership, and risk forever.

In this episode, I break down the five mental habits behind Dimon's 20-year run as the most powerful banker in the world, the same habits that let JPMorgan not just survive the 2008 financial crisis, but profit from it while every other major bank was collapsing or getting bailed out.

Right now, while every headline celebrates JPMorgan's record $16.5 billion Q1 profit, Dimon is warning about tectonic shifts in the global economy, a possible credit recession, and risks that most people aren't preparing for. There's a reason he sees what others miss. Today I'm going to show you how.

   In this episode:

  • Why Dimon plans for scenarios instead of making predictions — and how to apply this to your own decisions

  • The military OODA Loop he uses to make faster, better decisions than his competitors

  • Why he dedicates Sunday mornings to thinking — and why you should too

  • His 'cognitive diversity' practice: actively seeking people who will tell him he's wrong

  • The fortress balance sheet philosophy — and what it means for YOUR financial life

  • What Dimon's 2026 warnings actually mean for regular people — and what to do about them

These aren't Wall Street habits. They're thinking habits. They work at JPMorgan because they work everywhere.

Show notes:

Q: How does Jamie Dimon make decisions?

Jamie Dimon uses a system of scenario planning, the military OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), and weekly Sunday thinking sessions to make decisions under pressure. Rather than predicting outcomes, he prepares for a wide range of possibilities and maintains what he calls a 'fortress balance sheet' — holding more reserves than necessary so JPMorgan is never caught unprepared. Former JPMorgan banker M.A. Aponte breaks down Dimon's five thinking habits in this episode of Thinking 2 Think.

Q: What is Jamie Dimon warning about in 2026?

In his 2026 annual shareholder letter, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned of 'tectonic shifts' in the global order, including rising inflation risk, geopolitical instability from the Iran conflict, trade uncertainty, and a possible credit recession. He issued these warnings despite JPMorgan reporting a record $16.5 billion profit in Q1 2026, saying he prefers to 'hope for the best and plan for the worst.'

Q: What is the OODA Loop and how does Jamie Dimon use it?

The OODA Loop — Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — is a decision-making framework created by military strategist John Boyd. Jamie Dimon applies it to banking: continuously gathering new data, updating his understanding of the situation, making decisions, and checking how reality responded before cycling through again. This approach allowed JPMorgan to acquire Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual during the 2008 crisis while competitors were still assessing the damage.

Q: What is Jamie Dimon's leadership philosophy?

Jamie Dimon's core leadership philosophy centers on five principles: brutal honesty in assessment ('facts, analysis, detail — repeat'), scenario planning over prediction, cognitive diversity (actively seeking people who will disagree with him), separating optimism from preparation (hoping for the best while planning for the worst), and long-term thinking over short-term optimization ('we're not here to hit the quarter — we're here to build a business that lasts decades').

You Can Learn To Detect A Lie In Minutes08 Jul 202600:33:25

Send us Fan Mail

The scariest manipulators aren’t the ones who look like villains. They’re the ones who look normal, sound polite, and make you feel unreasonable for asking a basic question. We start with a true late-night subway call that taught me how easily a smooth story can hide control and harm, and why “surface-level instincts” can fail when someone is managing the space, the narrative, and the other person’s voice.

Then we zoom out to the modern manipulation landscape: AI-generated war videos, stolen accounts dressed up like news outlets, coordinated influence networks, and the most overlooked trick of all, real images paired with false captions. We talk about how misinformation spreads at scale on social platforms, how rage bait monetization works, and why the hardest lies to catch are the ones built on something real. If you care about media literacy, critical thinking, propaganda detection, and protecting yourself from online scams, this is the core skill set.

Finally, I teach the RADAR method, a practical framework inspired by Robert Cialdini’s persuasion research and sharpened through real-world experience. You’ll learn to spot reciprocity traps, fake authority, manufactured urgency, anchoring and framing, and reframing or gaslighting. We run a quick RADAR scan on a viral post and end with simple homework you can use for three days online and in one relationship that feels off. If this helps, subscribe, share it with someone you care about, and leave a review so more people can build a stronger radar.

The AI Illiteracy Crisis: We Taught Kids to Google. Now We Need to Teach Them to Think With AI01 Jul 202600:15:12

Send us Fan Mail

Artificial Intelligence is already transforming education, business, leadership, and society.

But while schools debate AI cheating, plagiarism detection, and classroom policies, they're missing a far bigger problem:

AI illiteracy.

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, Executive Director and High-Stakes Decision Advisor M.A. Aponte explores why the future belongs not to people who avoid AI—but to those who know how to think with it.

The question is no longer whether students should use artificial intelligence.

The question is whether they can evaluate it, challenge it, verify it, and build upon it.

You'll discover:

✅ What AI literacy actually means—and why most people misunderstand it
✅ The difference between AI fluency and AI literacy
✅ Why AI cheating is the wrong conversation
✅ The four cognitive skills every student must develop in the AI era
✅ How schools can teach critical thinking alongside AI tools
✅ Why prompt engineering alone is not enough
✅ How parents can prepare children for an AI-driven future
✅ The connection between AI literacy, leadership, and decision-making
✅ Why organizations that develop AI-augmented thinkers will outperform competitors

This episode explores the future of education, critical thinking, workforce readiness, leadership development, and artificial intelligence through the lens of one essential question:

Are we teaching students how to use AI—or how to think with AI?

Whether you're a parent, teacher, school administrator, entrepreneur, CEO, or lifelong learner, this conversation will challenge how you think about education and human intelligence in the age of artificial intelligence.

Because in the future, the most valuable skill may not be knowing the answer.

It may be knowing how to ask better questions.

Think Clearly. Lead Boldly. Stay Logical.

Why Smart Leaders Fail: The Hidden Psychology of Bad Decisions24 Jun 202600:13:19

Send us Fan Mail

Why do intelligent leaders make disastrous decisions?

It happens in corporations, schools, governments, nonprofits, startups, and even military organizations. The problem is rarely a lack of intelligence, experience, or information. More often, leaders unknowingly build systems that filter reality before it reaches them.

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, Executive Director, leadership advisor, and former NYPD officer M.A. Aponte explores The Leadership Failure Nobody Names—the hidden organizational dynamics that cause smart leaders to make catastrophically bad decisions despite having access to vast amounts of data and expertise.

You'll discover:

✅ The Intelligence-Failure Paradox and why power often reduces information quality
✅ How organizations create leadership echo chambers
✅ The dangers of sycophancy, groupthink, and yes-men cultures
✅ Why executives often receive filtered or distorted information
✅ The psychology behind premature certainty and cognitive closure
✅ Real-world examples from education, business, military leadership, and finance
✅ The Honest Signal Audit framework for improving decision-making
✅ How pre-mortems, dissent, and disagreement improve organizational outcomes
✅ Practical tools leaders can use to avoid blind spots and strategic failure

Whether you're a CEO, superintendent, principal, entrepreneur, executive, manager, board member, military leader, or aspiring leader, this episode will challenge how you think about information, influence, leadership, and decision-making under pressure.

Because the greatest threat to leadership is often not what you don't know.

It's what your organization prevents you from seeing.

Think Clearly. Lead Boldly. Stay Logical.

Why are so many students disengaged in school? Why are employees doing the bare minimum at work? Why do organizations struggle to build initiative, innovation, and genuine commitment?

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, Executive Director, leadership advisor, and former NYPD officer M.A. Aponte explores what he calls The Compliance Trap—the hidden system that rewards obedience, discourages intellectual risk-taking, and produces disengaged students, quiet quitting employees, and stagnant workplace cultures.

Drawing from research on intrinsic motivation, employee engagement, psychological safety, organizational culture, and modern education systems, this episode examines how schools and workplaces often reward compliance instead of critical thinking, initiative, creativity, and ownership.

You'll learn:

✅ Why rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation

How Leaders Confuse Data Noise for Signal (And Make Million-Dollar Mistakes) 11 Jun 202600:20:20

Send us Fan Mail

More information does not produce better decisions. This episode of Thinking 2 Think makes the case that data overload -- not data scarcity -- is the real leadership crisis of 2026. Executive Director and author M.A. Aponte draws on his experience in charter school leadership, Wall Street, and law enforcement to break down exactly how cognitive bias corrupts data interpretation and what the most effective leaders do differently when the signals are unclear.

What You Will Learn:

•         The critical difference between signal vs. noise in organizational data

•         Why confirmation bias, availability bias, anchoring bias, and overconfidence are the four most dangerous cognitive biases in leadership decision making

•         What Bayesian thinking actually means for leaders -- without the statistics

•         How to apply the Three-Gate Signal Filter before drawing any conclusion from ambiguous data

•         A real case study of an organization that confused noise for signal -- and built a strategic plan around the wrong conclusion

Q&A: What This Episode Answers

Q: What is the difference between signal and noise in leadership data?

A: Signal is data that meaningfully changes a decision. Noise is everything else. The same data point can be signal through one lens and noise through another -- depending entirely on the decision you are trying to make. Most leaders skip defining the decision first. That is how they end up treating noise like signal.

Q: How do cognitive biases affect leadership decisions?

A: Four biases are most damaging: Confirmation bias leads you to favor data that confirms what you already believe. Availability bias overweights recent, vivid events over slow-building trends. Anchoring bias locks you to the first number you see. Overconfidence bias makes leaders express ninety percent certainty on sixty-five percent evidence. Each of these is documented, measurable, and correctable -- but only if you know which one is running.

Q: What is Bayesian thinking for leaders?

A: Bayesian thinking means your confidence in any conclusion should be proportional to the quality and quantity of your evidence -- and should update continuously as new evidence arrives. In practice, it means defining in advance what would cause you to change your mind. That single discipline protects against confirmation bias after the fact.

The Three-Gate Signal Filter (from this episode):

•         Gate One: What specific decision does this data inform?

•         Gate Two: What is the base rate -- what would I expect without any intervention?

•         Gate Three: What evidence would cause me to revise this conclusion?

The Math and Literacy Crisis: What Schools Should Actually Teach03 Jun 202600:22:02

Test scores are declining, governors are calling for reform, and policy leaders are debating how to fix math and reading instruction—but the deepest problem in K-12 education isn't what we're teaching. It's that we've built a system optimized for narrow test performance instead of genuine intellectual development. In this episode, executive director and educator M.A. Aponte draws on lived experience running a charter school to examine what the research actually says works—and makes a principled case for why critical thinking must be the foundation of everything we teach. Includes a 3-Question Curriculum Audit any teacher, leader, or parent can apply right now.

Most people think they’re thinking independently.

They’re not.

They’re picking a side.

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, M.A. Aponte breaks down the psychology of tribal thinking—why your brain is wired to divide the world into “us vs them,” how media and algorithms exploit that instinct, and why people today hate each other more than they actually disagree.

This isn’t theory. It’s personal.

After the assassination of two NYPD officers in 2014, Aponte shares how his own thinking changed—how fear and identity reshaped how he saw the world, and what it cost him.

You’ll learn:

  • Why your brain automatically forms teams
  • The truth about political polarization (it’s not what you think)
  • How algorithms amplify division for profit
  • What “affective polarization” really means
  • How to think clearly without losing your humanity

If you want to think independently, communicate better, and avoid being controlled by group identity, this episode gives you the framework.

Most people think manipulation is obvious.

It’s not.

Real manipulation is subtle, logical, and often feels like your own decision.

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, M.A. Aponte breaks down the hidden psychology behind manipulation—how it works, why it works, and how to recognize it before it impacts your decisions, relationships, and leadership.

Drawing from experience across finance, law enforcement, and education leadership, this episode explores the real-world patterns manipulators use—and how to think clearly when it matters most.

Inside this episode:

  • The 5 most common manipulation tactics (gaslighting, urgency, social proof, and more)
  • Why intelligent people still get manipulated
  • How emotional pressure overrides logical thinking
  • A practical framework to protect your decision-making in real time

I break down how the smoothest manipulators hide in plain sight, from a late-night domestic call to AI-driven war propaganda and everyday pressure tactics. I teach the RADAR method so you can spot influence moves quickly and keep your thinking brain in charge.

• warning signs of coercive control that look “normal” at first glance
• how AI misinformation and misframing spread through real footage and false context
• why outrage and fear outperform truth on social media algorithms
• RADAR explained as five repeatable manipulation patterns
• reciprocity traps and the question did I ask for this

Appeasement vs Aggression: Why Most Leaders Fail When Pressure Hits; Where Should The Iran Story Begin?18 Mar 202600:50:07

Send us Fan Mail

In high-pressure environments, leaders are often forced into what feels like a binary choice: appease or confront.

But what if both options are flawed?

In this episode of Thinking 2 Think, M.A. Aponte breaks down one of the most dangerous traps in decision-making—false dichotomies under pressure—through the lens of appeasement vs aggression.

Drawing from history, leadership psychology, and real-world decision frameworks, this episode explores how poor judgment in high-stakes moments leads to long-term consequences in business, education, and leadership.

Inside this episode:

  • The psychology behind appeasement and aggression
  • Why leaders default to extremes under pressure
  • Historical examples of appeasement vs confrontation
  • The hidden cost of “short-term peace” decisions
  • A third-path framework for better decision-making
  • How to maintain clarity when emotions and stakes are high

If you're a leader, educator, entrepreneur, or decision-maker navigating uncertainty, this episode will help you think more clearly when it matters most.

We trace the full chain behind the Iran conflict from early oil concessions and Cold War pressure to the 1953 coup, the 1979 revolution, and the nuclear standoff driving today’s war. We steel man both sides of the military-action argument and pull out the thinking errors that keep people certain, loud, and wrong.

• the two common Iran origin stories and what each leaves out
• the 1901 oil concession and why resource control shapes identity
• WWII occupation, Soviet pressure, and why geography becomes destiny
• the Tudeh Party as a case study in holding complexity
• Mossadegh’s nationalization and the competing claims about his rule
• the 1953 coup as a convergence of interests not one motive
• the Shah’s dictatorship, SAVAK repression, and the path to 1979
• the embassy hostage crisis as first-order thinking with long costs
• proxy wars, Iran-Contra, Flight 655, and the escalation feedback loop
• the nuclear timeline from AMAD to the JCPOA to post-2018 breaches
• steel manning the pro-strike case and the anti-strike case
• four thinking failures: narrative manipulation, first-order thinking, sunk cost fallacy, confirmation bias
• practical homework: question the starting point, steel man the other side, find your sunk cost

Why Your Solution Created 3 New Problems | Systems Thinking04 Mar 202600:20:06

We trace how a well-meant math intervention backfired, then build a clear method to predict ripple effects, delays, and unintended outcomes before they hit. Stories from school leadership and finance ground a practical playbook for mapping systems, reading feedback loops, and choosing better levers.

 You'll learn:
• Linear fixes versus interconnected systems
• Second and third order consequences
• Delays, leading and lagging indicators
• Reinforcing and balancing feedback loops
• Mapping decisions and stakeholder incentives
• Case studies from education and wealth management
• A four-step systems playbook for leaders
• A systemic solution to improve math without harming engagement

REAL CASE STUDY: How I fixed the math problem with systems thinking:

❌ Linear solution: Extended time → 6% improvement, teacher burnout, attendance drop

✅ Systems solution: Partner with middle schools, summer bridge program, better instruction quality, diagnostic assessments → 12% improvement, 4% attendance increase, 94% teacher retention (up from 78%)

Linear thinking: Problem → Solution → Problem solved. Systems thinking: Problem → Solution → Creates new problems → Which create new problems → Which loop back to the original problem.

KEY INSIGHT: Most organizational problems are caused by unintentional reinforcing loops creating vicious cycles. Most solutions fail because they ignore balancing loops that counteract your change.

KEY FRAMEWORKS:

  1. Second-order thinking: Ask "And then what?" three times
  2. Feedback loops: Reinforcing (amplifies) vs Balancing (dampens)
  3. Leading vs lagging indicators: Watch attendance/stress (leading) not just test scores (lagging)
  4. Root cause vs symptom: Solve the problem, not the signal

How Elon Musk Thinks: First Principles Problem Solving25 Feb 202600:20:10

Send us Fan Mail

📧 Weekly First Principles frameworks: maaponte.substack.com

Most people think by analogy: "This is like that, so I'll do what worked before."

But when context changes, analogy fails. And you don't even realize it's failing.

First Principles Thinking is different. Instead of asking "What's this similar to?" you ask "What's actually true here?" You strip away assumptions, get to fundamental truths, and rebuild from logic.

This is how Elon Musk proved electric cars could be affordable. This is how great scientists solve impossible problems. And you can learn it too.

In this episode, I break down the exact process for First Principles Thinking—and show you how I used it to cut school suspensions by 60% in one year.

Real story: Early in my finance career, an investor stopped my pitch and asked: "Why does the stock market exist?" I didn't know. I'd been trained on HOW markets work, not WHY they exist. He walked me through first principles—and it changed my entire approach to investing.
You'll learn:
• Why markets exist and what that means for investing
• First principles versus thinking by analogy
• Foundational truths in physics, math, behavior, and organizations
• Uncovering hidden assumptions in education structures
• Rebuilding methods around exposure, practice, and feedback
• Applying principles to hiring, training budgets, and staff conflict
• Common traps and counters that block clear thinking
• Practical exercises: five whys, start from zero, question constraints
• A restorative approach to discipline that lowers suspensions
• Simple prompts to apply the mindset this week

CRITICAL EXAMPLE: Traditional discipline assumption = "students need punishment to learn." First principle = "behavior is communication of unmet needs." Rebuilt discipline system around connection, competence, autonomy, safety instead of punishment. Suspensions dropped 60% because we stopped solving the wrong problem.

Most constraints aren't real—they're assumed. "We can't because of budget/regulations/time" usually means "we've assumed we can't."

Strip it down. Question everything. Rebuild from fundamentals.

If you want to go deeper on first principles thinking, if you want frameworks for identifying hidden assumptions and rebuilding from fundamentals, I write about this every week in my Substack. maaponte.substack.com

From Fast Reactions To Wise Choices: How System 1 And System 2 Shape Your Life18 Feb 202600:25:21

Send us Fan Mail

You have two completely different thinking systems in your head. Most of the time, you don't even know which one is in control.

  • System 1: Fast, emotional, automatic, always on
  • System 2: Slow, logical, deliberate, requires effort

Here's the problem: System 1 makes most of your decisions in 0.3 seconds. Then System 2 creates a story to justify it. You THINK you're being rational. But you're not.

In this episode, I break down how these two systems work—and why System 1 hijacks your decisions before System 2 even shows up.

Real story from my NYPD days: Standing in a doorway at 2am, domestic disturbance call. Brain 1 said, "Threat. Draw weapon." Brain 2 said "Wait. Look closer. This is a crisis, not aggression." Switching systems changed the outcome.

You'll learn:

  1. The 4 massive blindspots of System 1 thinking (why propaganda works, why you're terrible at probability, why you want the donut NOW)
  2. Why hiring managers decide in 10 seconds then spend the rest of the interview confirming their bias
  3. How to recognize which system you're in (certainty without analysis = System 1)
  4. 5 strategies to activate System 2 when it matters (pause, name emotions, ask questions, pre-commit, change environment)
  5. When you NEED System 1 (emergencies, performance) vs when you NEED System 2 (strategy, hiring, complex decisions)

CRITICAL INSIGHT: The skill isn't "always use System 2." The skill is recognizing which system you're in and which system you need—then making the shift.

Please sign up. I have additional resources and behind-the-scenes in my $10-a-month subscription, but there are a lot of resources in the free one, so please, please sign up

We explore why identity is not a job title but the pattern of thought that runs your choices when the pressure hits. We map three layers of identity, show how unconscious drivers hijack decisions, and lay out practical steps to build a resilient thinking identity.

• story of shifting roles without changing core thinking
• difference between roles and identity
• three layers of identity: surface, aspirational, operating
• identity wounds and how they drive decisions
• common operating identities and their costs
• case studies in school leadership and crisis choices
• questions to diagnose your operating identity
• a four-step method to change identity
• if-then plans, evidence journals, and community
• personal shift from proving to learning

I share my own journey from "Prove you're not a failure" to "Someone who learns from everything"—and how that shift changed every decision I make. You'll learn:

  • How to diagnose your current operating identity
  • Why your identity sabotages your thinking under stress
  • The 5-step process to build a new identity deliberately
  • Common operating identities that hold leaders back ("Prove you're smart enough," "Fix everything yourself," "Don't make waves")
  • Why shame-based aspirational identities paralyze instead of motivate

Not all thinking is created equal. There are five distinct levels—and most people get stuck at Level 3 without realizing it.

In this episode, I break down the Cognitive Ladder: from recall to comprehension to application to transfer to evaluation. I share the story of a student who could memorize the Constitution but couldn't apply it to modern life, a teacher who transferred literary analysis skills to crisis intervention, and the Level 5 judgment call I had to make when deciding whether to fire a beloved teacher.

What you'll learn:

  • The five levels of thinking (and how to diagnose where you are)
  • Why smart people struggle when the context changes
  • Traps at each level and how to avoid them
  • How I transferred thinking skills across four different careers
  • The difference between knowing how to do something and being able to adapt it
  • How to move up the ladder one rung at a time
  • step-by-step methods to move up a level
  • aligning tasks with levels to lead and teach better
  • building tolerance for ambiguity and owning decisions

If you want to go deeper on this, if you want to diagnose your thinking level and frameworks for moving up the ladder, I write about this every week in my Substack. If you want the insider of Substack, that's a $10 a month, and the link is in the show.

Why Smart People Make Dumb Decisions: The Knowing-Thinking Gap in Leadership28 Jan 202600:23:39

Send us Fan Mail

Why do highly educated people make catastrophically bad decisions? In this episode, Mike Aponte reveals the "knowing-thinking gap"—the critical difference between memorizing information and actually thinking critically.

Drawing on his experience as a Merrill Lynch wealth manager during the 2008 financial crisis, Mike shares the story of a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon who "knew" finance but couldn't think strategically about his portfolio. He also explores why high school students can memorize facts about clean energy but fail to think through second-order consequences.

You'll discover:

  • - Why expertise in one domain doesn't transfer to critical thinking skills
  • - The cognitive bias that makes smart people overconfident in unfamiliar areas
  • - How to recognize when you're "knowing" vs. actually "thinking"
  • - A framework for developing true critical thinking beyond knowledge accumulation
  • - Real examples from Wall Street, education, and law enforcement

Perfect for educators, leaders, executives, and anyone who wants to move beyond surface-level knowledge to deep strategic thinking. Learn the decision-making frameworks used by top performers across industries.

How Your Brain Actually Works (And Why Smart People Make Dumb Decisions)21 Jan 202600:28:16

Send us Fan Mail

A split-second police simulation shows how fast the brain can be wrong, then we map the same mechanics onto work, parenting, and leadership. We break down cognitive budgets, working memory limits, mental models, load types, and four practical strategies to decide better under pressure.

Your brain has 4-7 slots of working memory. That's it. And every decision you make, every problem you solve, every conversation you have is competing for those slots.

In this episode, I break down the architecture of thought—how working memory actually works, what cognitive load is, and why intelligence and wisdom are not the same thing.

You'll learn:

  • Why you can only hold 4-7 things in your head at once (and what happens when you exceed that limit)
  • How to offload cognitive load to free up mental space (and why writing things down literally makes you smarter)
  • The difference between knowing something and being able to apply it under pressure
  • Why the smartest person in the room often makes the worst decisions

This isn't abstract neuroscience—this is practical framework for understanding why you forgot what you walked into a room for, why meetings drain you even when you're just listening, and why your best ideas come in the shower (not at your desk).

Plus: The one habit that instantly upgrades your thinking capacity (it takes 2 minutes and costs nothing).

Artificial intelligence didn’t break education, work, or leadership.
It revealed a gap we avoided teaching.

We map the shift from answer-getting to judgment-making and name the unease many students and leaders feel when certainty disappears. We explain how AI exposed the gap, why identity gets shaken, and how to practice critical thinking as a teachable discipline.

• naming the unease across education and work
• shift from correctness to judgment under uncertainty
• how structure disappears as responsibility arrives
• intelligence versus judgment under pressure
• adaptability as identity revision, not bravado
• AI as clarity engine exposing where value lives
• education–work mismatch and its real costs
• a clear definition of critical thinking and habits
• building spaces to practice public reasoning

Narcissism: No One Clapped, Would You Still Matter?20 Oct 202500:21:48

Send us Fan Mail

A missed title at a conference shouldn’t spark a crisis of identity—yet for Elena, a decorated senior research fellow, it did. We follow that sharp sting and instant correction to uncover a deeper pattern: when confidence depends on credentials, minor slights can feel like existential threats. Using a vivid case from Aponte’s “The Mask of Credentials,” we explore how ego maintenance becomes brittle, how vulnerable narcissism hides behind quiet competence, and why the chase for recognition keeps failing to deliver durable self-worth.

We unpack the psychology from several angles. Freud gives us the frame for ego defenses, while contemporary research maps narcissism as a spectrum with grandiose and vulnerable forms. Kohut’s theory of missing mirroring explains the craving for external validation, and Kernberg’s model clarifies the split between a polished public image and a hidden core of shame. We trace two development pathways—chronic invalidation and overindulgence—and show how both can produce entitlement, poor frustration tolerance, and hypersensitivity to status cues. Then we widen the lens to culture: social media rewards the mask of success, driving a cycle of short-lived highs, escalating corrections, and brittle relationships.

Along the way, we examine the relational cost. When identity is outsourced to others’ reactions, people become instruments—mirrors to reflect a preferred image—rather than partners. Miss the cue, and value plummets. To break the loop, we share concrete practices: catch the surge when status feels threatened, pause before correcting, and ask, “Would I still believe in my value if no one noticed?” We introduce logical humility—the discipline of letting ideas stand on their own—so credentials become tools, not life support. Finally, we challenge a subtler mask: grandiose suffering, the move to claim specialness through hardship rather than achievement.

If you’ve ever felt your mood hinge on recognition, this conversation offers a path to steadier ground. Subscribe, share with a friend who loves psychology deep dives, and leave a review with your answer to our core question: what remains when no one is watching?

Your Brain is Being Rewired While You Scroll28 Jul 202500:12:46

Send us Fan Mail

We dive deep into how digital algorithms shape our thinking and behavior through subtle reward systems rather than direct commands, exploring Michael Aponte's concept of "digitally optimized obedience" and its far-reaching implications for individual autonomy and society. Drawing from Aponte's research, the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, and Harvard Medical School findings, we examine how technology is fundamentally reshaping our sense of morality and acceptable speech through invisible algorithmic nudges.

• Digitally optimized obedience works through rewards and incentives, not direct commands or fear
• Algorithms create feedback loops that train users to behave in ways that generate engagement
• Content amplification functions as implicit moral approval while shadow-banning marks ideas as unacceptable
• Echo chambers and filter bubbles create the illusion of information while narrowing our perspectives
• Algorithms deliberately escalate content toward more extreme versions to maintain engagement
• Digital platforms known to target children's developing brains despite awareness of potential harm
• Self-censorship emerges as users internalize algorithmic preferences to gain social rewards
• Reclaiming autonomy requires conscious awareness of how algorithms shape our choices

Take a moment to consider how deeply algorithms are influencing your thoughts and behaviors. What does genuine freedom of choice look like in our digitally optimized world? Please like, comment, share, and subscribe to Thinking2Think for more explorations into the forces shaping our minds.

What Makes Ordinary People Capable of Extraordinary Cruelty?24 Jul 202500:16:39

Send us Fan Mail

The Stanford Prison Experiment reveals how ordinary people transform under situational power, challenging our understanding of good versus evil.

• Philip Zimbardo's childhood in the South Bronx shaped his interest in how good people do bad things
• 24 normal college students were randomly assigned as guards or prisoners in a basement "prison" at Stanford
• Guards quickly embraced authority, implementing degradation rituals and psychological domination
• The experiment shows three levels of influence: personal traits, situational context, and systemic forces
• Mechanisms of corruption include moral disengagement, deindividuation, conformity, and dehumanization
• Abu Ghraib prison abuses directly parallel the experiment's findings, even cited in the official investigation
• Resistance is possible through mindfulness, questioning authority, and understanding influence tactics
• Whistleblowers like Joe Darby (Abu Ghraib) and Christina Maslach (SPE) show the power of moral courage
• The "banality of heroism" concept suggests anyone can choose ethical action even in difficult situations
• Breaking free from situational scripts requires awareness and critical thinking - your true superpowers

Break the script. You were meant to think freely.

Sacred Science: When Questioning Became Dangerous17 Jul 202500:20:08

Send us Fan Mail

We dive deep into the psychology of collective obedience during the COVID-19 pandemic, examining how fear, authority, and group dynamics influenced behavior on a massive scale. Michael Aponsis' paper "Six Feet of Separation from Reality" serves as our guide for understanding how societies fell in line with unprecedented uniformity.

• The COVID-19 response characterized as a "global obedience experiment" where policies spread alongside the virus
• Comparison to Stanley Milgram's obedience studies, with pandemic compliance driven by internal fear rather than direct commands
• How fear served as the primary engine for compliance, creating visceral rather than rational responses
• The transformation of science into "sacred science" where questioning became taboo
• Matthias Desmet's concept of "mass formation" explaining how isolated, anxious populations gravitate toward unifying narratives
• The shift from seeing obedience as following orders to "emotional obedience" where moral pressure drives compliance
• The costs beyond restrictions: loss of intellectual humility, curiosity, and interpersonal trust
• People reduced to potential threats rather than fellow humans, fundamentally changing social dynamics
• The dangerous elevation of obedience as the highest virtue and questioning as harmful
• Aponte's call to action: normalizing dissent, embracing nuance, and rebuilding tolerance for uncertainty

Are You Afraid to Question Your Tribe? The Hidden Cost of Social Acceptance14 Jul 202500:35:21

Send us Fan Mail

The profound psychological mechanisms that make cults effective operate invisibly throughout our society, from social media platforms to political movements, creating powerful pressures that silence independent thought.

• Cult psychology extends far beyond stereotypical fringe groups, operating in corporate boardrooms, political rallies, and even school classrooms
• Robert Lifton's eight characteristics of cult environments include milieu control, demand for purity, confession, and sacred science
• Stephen Hassan's BITE model examines how groups control behavior, information, thought, and emotions
• Social media algorithms create echo chambers that reward ideological purity and punish nuance
• The human need for belonging makes even intelligent people vulnerable to group pressure
• Modern groups enforce "moral conformity" where dissent becomes a character flaw rather than intellectual disagreement
• Breaking free from high-control groups feels like "social suicide" but offers the ultimate liberation
• Truly healthy communities normalize doubt, reward nuance, and honor the courage to say "I'm not sure"

The Psychology of Obedience10 Jul 202500:27:34

Send us Fan Mail

Series: Obedient Nation

Episode 1 of 5: The Psychology of Obedience

Hosts:  Dr. Elias Quinn and Lyra Morgan

We explore the startling capacity of ordinary people to obey authority figures, even when directed to perform acts that violate their personal conscience and moral codes.

• Drawing from Michael Aponte's "The Shock Heard Around the World," we examine Milgram's famous obedience experiments
• 65% of participants administered what they believed were potentially lethal shocks simply because an authority figure instructed them to continue
• Three psychological mechanisms enable blind obedience: the agentic state, incremental compliance, and moral framing
• These same forces operate in cults, political tribalism, and groupthink scenarios
• The COVID-19 pandemic revealed similar patterns of compliance, social pressure, and suppression of dissent
• Understanding these mechanisms within ourselves is the first step toward maintaining independent critical thinking
• Cultivating awareness and discernment helps us resist harmful influence while holding true to our values

Subscribe, like, and share this episode to help spread these important conversations about human psychology and critical thinking in today's complex world.

Are You Thinking or Just Obeying?07 Jul 202500:18:34

Send us Fan Mail

We dig into the psychology of blind obedience, exploring how the findings from Milgram's famous shock experiment continue to echo powerfully in today's world from cults to pandemic responses and political tribalism.

• The Milgram experiment revealed 65% of participants would deliver maximum "shocks" when instructed by an authority figure
• Three key conditions facilitate obedience: legitimate-seeming authority, diffused responsibility, and gradual escalation
• The "agentic state" allows people to transfer responsibility to authority figures and bypass their own moral judgment
• Cult dynamics weaponize the same psychological principles found in Milgram's experiment
• During the pandemic, social pressure and fear of being labeled "anti-science" discouraged questioning of changing directives
• Political tribalism mirrors cult psychology with blind loyalty, moral framing, and punishment of dissenters
• The Dunning-Kruger effect combines with obedience to create people who are confidently wrong yet resistant to correction
• Critical thinking and self-awareness are the antidotes to blind obedience
• We should reframe dissent as a form of care rather than rebellion or betrayal
• Understanding these psychological mechanisms gives us power to consciously choose whether to be influenced by them

Keep thinking to think and practicing conscious, critical engagement with the authorities in your life.

The Outrage Effect: Understanding Selective Indignation and Social Media Bias05 May 202400:19:31

Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to a special episode of "Thinking 2 Think" with your host, M.A. Aponte. In this thought-provoking installment, we embark on a journey to unravel the complexities of selective outrage and its intertwining with the power of social media.

Throughout this episode, we delve deep into the phenomenon of selective outrage, exploring how individuals and societies often express moral indignation selectively, focusing on certain issues while neglecting others. We examine the psychological and sociological factors that drive this behavior, from cognitive biases to tribal instincts, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms at play.

But our exploration doesn't end there. We also examine the role of social media in amplifying and perpetuating selective outrage. With its algorithms, echo chambers, and viral dynamics, social media has the power to shape our perceptions, influence our opinions, and drive collective action. We dissect how platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram can both unite and divide us, fueling moral indignation while simultaneously blurring the lines between genuine concern and performative outrage.

As we navigate these complex issues, we'll also touch upon pressing global events, from the conflict in Ukraine to the Israeli-Palestinian tensions, and explore how they intersect with selective outrage and social media dynamics. Additionally, we'll examine domestic controversies, such as protests and immigration policies, and analyze their resonance in the digital sphere.

Join M.A. Aponte on this intellectual journey as we think critically, question everything, and unravel the layers of selective outrage and social media influence. Whether you're a seasoned thinker or just beginning your exploration of these topics, this episode offers valuable insights and perspectives to ponder.

Tune in to "Thinking 2 Think" and embark on a quest to engage your mind, challenge your assumptions, and navigate the complexities of our modern world.
