When All Your Hard Work is Not Showing Up in Your Golf Scores08 Nov 202300:11:40

In this episode,  Kathy addresses the dilemma many golfers face when they've put in a lot of effort and time into their game but aren't seeing the desired results.

She discusses the emotions that arise, such as feeling defeated and wanting to quit.

Kathy emphasizes that quitting to escape negative emotions isn't the best solution and encourages golfers to shift their perspective.

She highlights that golf doesn't always have a direct correlation between effort and results, unlike some other areas in life.

Managing one's mind and emotions on the golf course is crucial, and unrealistic expectations can lead to frustration.

Kathy suggests that before quitting, golfers should consider what they truly want from the game and how it makes them feel.
The key is to manage one's emotions and embrace the journey rather than rushing for results.

Before you throw in the towel, make sure you listen to this episode.

4 Ways You Mentally Self-Sabotage in Golf01 Nov 202300:13:28

In this podcast,  Kathy discusses the mental aspects of golf and how golfers can self-sabotage mentally on the course. She emphasizes the importance of continuous mental practice, regardless of the season or tournaments.  Kathy identifies four common ways golfers sabotage themselves mentally:

1. Failing to self-reflect and be aware of repeating patterns and habits.
2. Waiting for external situations to change to feel better, giving away power to circumstances.
3. Not setting intentions for the round, allowing the mind to wander.
4. Creating unnecessary mental turmoil by not preparing for certain shots or situations.

She encourages golfers to proactively address these issues and be more aware of their mental game to avoid self-sabotage. If you want assistance with your mental management on the course,   contact Kathy at KathyHartWood.com

3 Things I Learned as a Caddie in a USGA Event with Tori Totlis18 Oct 202300:43:51

This podcast is a conversation that Tori Totlis of T-Time with Tori had with me about my experience caddying in the USGA Senior Women's Amateur this year in Scottsdale, AZ.

We get into how our brains can be either our biggest asset or biggest barrier in golf, discussing the importance of effective instruction and how it can be tailored to resonate with different learners.

“The fastest way to get better is to manage your mind first.  Don’t wait to become a certain handicap before you decide to work on your brain and how you think out on the course. Work on it now.”

Tori and I dive into my three biggest takeaways on caddying for USGA events: being prepared mentally for the pace of play, understanding group dynamics, and setting up your course conditions.

How to Make a Birdie27 Sep 202300:07:48

Have you ever told yourself you needed to make a couple birdies on the last few holes?

Or maybe you categorize holes as "birdie holes" and up your expectations on short par fours or fives.

Chances are it did NOT turn out the way you planned.

You may have even made a bogey or two instead.

So the question is “How do you make a birdie?”

The quick answer is hit is close and make as short a putt as possible.

This is for sure an easier way to go about it but in this episode I want to shift the way you think about making a birdie so that you can open yourself up to more creativity and possibilities on the golf course.

And in the process help prevent you from make random mistakes and ugly swings on those last few holes or short part fives.

A New Way to Score For Your Golf Brain19 Sep 202300:11:26

Scoring can be mental. How you think about par, birdie, bogey can affect how you show up over the ball.  You can put unnecessary pressure on yourself to make a putt for par or give yourself a "3-putt pass" on a par 5 if you hit the green in two.

In this episode, I share a different way to think about scoring so that you can stand over as many shots as possible from a calm, certain or confident place.

Listen in and gain a paradigm shift on scoring with 3 key concepts.

How to Play Golf One Shot at a Time13 Sep 202300:11:46

"Just play golf one shot at a time."
It is common advice but most golfers don't know how to exactly get that done.

In this episode, I first break down what it means to NOT play golf one shot at a time.

By understanding what happens when you get ahead of yourself on the course, ruminate over a previous hole or shot,  or argue with the reality of the situation in front of you,  you can better understand what is required to play in the present moment.

I share with you the 3 steps required to hit golf shots "one at a time."

If you have a one day qualifier on your schedule this season whether it is a USGA or club championship qualifier, I have three tips to help you get through these rounds easier and with more success.

One of the keys is to not make the event too big of a deal for the sake of your brain.  The bigger of a deal you make the tournament the more your brain is going to freak you out.

I share three mental hurdles that typically show up on qualifying days. If you are aware of them and have some strategies to pivot back to a more calm or certain state, you will produce better and easier results.

How Distance Chasing Sabotages Your Golf Swing and Confidence06 Aug 202500:13:12

You ever play with someone who hits it farther and suddenly your swing disappears? Yep, we’re talking about the sneaky mind game of chasing distance. In this episode, I’m breaking down why trying to keep up off the tee messes with your tempo, trashes your confidence, and takes you completely out of your own game. I’ll share a few Pro-Am stories (spoiler: fragile male egos ahead), and help you spot when your brain starts spiraling into “I’m not enough” mode. If you’ve ever gripped it and ripped it just to prove something, this one’s for you. Let’s ditch the comparison trap and play smarter, not harder.

Many people sign up for tournaments or competitions and then don't enjoy the event - regardless of how they score.

Then, I simply reverse engineer it all and show you how to create more enjoyment around those golf tournaments you sign up for.

Crappy Golf Question You Ask Yourself26 Apr 202300:12:49

We tend to ask ourselves bad questions about ourselves and our golf game.

They are questions that make us feel crappy.

They lead to a bit of hopelessness, doubt, fear, pressure.

They sound like:

  • What is wrong with me?
  • What if I score bad?
  • Why can't I ever play well?
  • What If I get off to a bad start?
  • Why do I suck?
  • Why is everyone better than me?

The thing is that our brains will just ask these questions by default...if we let it.

In this episode, I bring light to these common crappy golf questions, share with you why they aren't helpful and show you how to ask better questions.

If you ask powerful questions, you get powerful answers from your brain. When you get better answers, you will feel better and play better.

The 4 Stages to Unleash Your Golf Game19 Apr 202300:15:44

To play to your potential means to take what you own at this given moment in time out onto the golf course.

Most golfers get in their own way with negative thoughts and emotions that leash their game.  It is stuck behind  a mismanaged mind and thoughts and beliefs most of which we don't even notice.

In this episode, I talk about the 4 stages of unleashing your golf game.

  • First is to unleash your brain from negative thoughts patterns
  • Second unleash your swing from pressure, frustration, doubt, ets
  • Third, play unleashed by minimizing your focus on results or fears
  • Fourth is to unleash your confidence and play in this state regardless of how you are hitting the ball.

There is nothing more frustrating than knowing you have more talent than you take to the course. I share the steps to getting out of your own way and unleashing your game on the course.

A Concept to Change Your Negative Golf Moments22 Mar 202300:12:22

Golf isn't always great. I know you know this. We certainly wish that everyday was amazing.  But if everyday was awesome then no day would be. We want the contrast.
If we don't know what bad shots are we won't know what good shots are.

If we don't know what hopeless feels like, we won't recognize hope when it happens.

This is a concept of 50/50 that shows up in our lives and on the course.

In this episode, I explain how to use this concept to make the most of the inevitable negative moments that we will experience with the game of golf.

A Golf Lens Challenge08 Mar 202300:14:17

In this episode I challenge you to try on different lenses in any area of your life and your golf game where you are aggravated, annoyed, or upset.

Those emotions are indicators that perhaps you are "wearing" glasses that are filtering your world in a way that doesn't serve you.

This works on and off the golf course. By trying this challenge and finding evidence of shifting your lens, you give your brain more proof that it works.

And then, you will be inspired to do it over and over again.

Listen in as I walk your through different scenarios for you to explore and shift your lens so that YOU get to have more control over your experience.

How to Know When You Take Golf Too Seriously01 Mar 202300:10:49

Have you been accused of taking the game too seriously?

In this episode, I talk about how to differentiate the difference between being a passionate golfer and a "too passionate" golfer.

It could be that you spend most of your days practicing and playing the game, all of your conversations revolve around golf,  and all your spare time is spent watching videos and taking lessons.

It could be that you take a few extra looks at putts and double check your yardage.

But how do you really know if you have gone to the land of too serious?
I'll share with you what to look for in this episode.

Changing Your Golf Brain is Like Changing Your Golf Swing08 Feb 202300:15:42

I wish I could wave a magic wand and give everyone a beautiful swing and a peaceful mind full of useful thoughts.

Unfortunately, our brains like to create habits and once we create them in our swing or in our brains, it takes some work to break the habits and replace them with new ones.

While we may not have a problem with doing the work, we are actually working against our own brain’s desire NOT to change.

In this episode, I share with you what to expect and how changing your negative thoughts  and swing mechanics have a lot in common.
