Session 374: Black Women In Sports Media28 Aug 202400:51:11

Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha’Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women’s sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what’s needed to correct some of these biased narratives.

Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS’s SC6. And Jemele, making her return to the TBG Podcast, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic where she covers the intersection between sports, race, politics, gender and culture. During our conversation, we discussed the barriers that exist for Black women to enter the sports media space, the importance of cultural competency when covering women’s sports, and why we can’t just “stick to sports” when talking about female athletes.

TBG U Girl Chat: Let's Talk Summer 202427 Aug 202400:43:04

Summer, is that you? Sure, it’s August, but we have a few more weeks to enjoy this weather, so let’s celebrate accordingly.

Welcome to the TBG University podcast, tailored for the 20-something who’s still obsessing over the finale of Love Island, replaying the hottest song of the summer, getting her tote bag packed for the first day of classes, and everything in between. Here at TBG, we believe in the healing power of sisterhood, and one of our favorite parts of female friendship is getting to sit down and kiki about everything that’s going on in our lives at the moment. So in this special girl chat episode, Jayna Ellis, TBG Coordinator and the Associate Producer of the TBG Podcast, Zariah Taylor, took some time to reflect on our summers.

In our girl chat today, we explore the pressure to have a “productive” summer, dive in to some recent pop culture, and share some advice for both the people going back to school and the post-graduate whose feeling unsure about their new normal.

BONUS: Black Girls React to The Little Mermaid12 Jun 202300:14:18

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

So many of us have been patiently waiting for the arrival of the live action remake of Disney’s Little Mermaid. The 1989 classic has finally sailed back to the big screen but this time reimagined with a new leading lady, a Black Ariel, brought to life by Halle Bailey. To celebrate the release of the film, we partnered with Valencia Seuell, the founder of Elite 23 International, a non-profit Chicago-based organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting women and young girls around the world to send a group of young lades to see the film on opening weekend. Four of them then joined me on the podcast to share about their experiences watching the film and what the film taught them about life. Today on the podcast I’m joined by Caleigh, Sa’Mya, Ameri, and Kennedee.

This episode does contain spoilers so if you haven’t had the opportunity to see the film yet, put this episode on pause and come back to it later.

Session 310: Catching Up On Queen Charlotte07 Jun 202300:54:54

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

We first meet Queen Charlotte in Season 1 of Shonda Rhimes’ hit show ‘Bridgerton’ as a commanding and dignified queen consort on a ruthless pursuit to name the social season's diamond. But the prequel spin-off shows a different side to the Queen’s rise to prominence and power. We see a young Charlotte betrothed against her will, her budding relationships with King George and Lady Danbury, and navigating the ins and outs of her newfound queendom.

To discuss Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in-depth, this week, I'm joined once again by my partner in pop culture, sex & relationship therapist, Dr. Donna Oriowo. We explore the complexities of mental health, sisterhood, and race relations present in the series, comment on storylines we were surprised and delighted by, and make predictions for the future of the Bridgerton franchise.

Whether your beauty routine simply includes sunscreen and a scrunchie or is a bit more complex with lash extensions and lasers, Black women consumers continue to play a major role in the beauty industry. Session 306: Becoming A Therapist, Part II10 May 202300:57:30

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

We’ve had dozens of therapists on the podcast sharing their perspectives on various topics, from friendships to mediation and even horror movies. But have you ever wondered what it takes to become a licensed therapist? Well, the road isn’t paved in gold…more like a few years of school and thousands of hours of supervised practice. But don’t fret; this second installment of our Becoming A Therapist series is for our community members who are therapists, sisters looking to enter the field, and everyone in between.

Joining me today are psychologists Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, based in Utah, and Dr. D’Andria Jackson based in Ohio.  My colleagues and I got candid about our journeys and talked all things personal development, business administration, insurance paneling, and more.

If you’re all caught up on Hulu’s new hit, Unprisoned, then this is the episode for you. Starring Kerry Washington as Paige Alexander and Delroy Lindo as her father Edwin, Unprisoned is a funny and realistic look at what happens when Edwin is released from prison and moves in with Paige and her son Finn. Joining me today to chat about what might happen if Paige came to her office for therapy is Dr. Lexx Brown-James. Dr. Lexx is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist and an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator and Supervisor.

Dr. Lexx and I chatted about some of the issues she’d explore with Paige in therapy, how attachment styles impact our relationships, what reparenting and inner child work looks like in therapy, and how Paige’s career as a therapist might impact how she showed up as a client. Session 303: How Trauma Affects the Brain19 Apr 202300:40:43

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Due to the dedicated work of so many brilliant scientists like our guest today, we have learned and continue to learn so much about how the traumatic experiences of our parents, grandparents and other ancestors are passed down. Today we’re diving into an exploration of intergenerational trauma with our guest, Dr. Bianca Jones Marlin.

Dr. Marlin is a neuroscientist and Herbert and Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Cell Research at the Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University in New York City. She studies how information learned can be passed down to future generations through transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. It's all about understanding how traits and behaviors are passed on through generations, shaping how we act and behave. During our conversation she breaks down the science behind generational trauma and how trauma manifests in our bodies, brains, and everyday lives.

Session 301: Protecting Your Mental Health As A Black Woman Attorney05 Apr 202300:52:52

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Last week we shared part 1 of a conversation about exploring non traditional pathways as a Black woman in the legal field and this week we’re back with part 2. For this conversation, I’m joined by Patrice Perkins, a business and intellectual property attorney with a focus on arts and culture, new media, and entertainment. She is also the founder of Creative Genius Law® -- a strategic legal partner that helps traditionally disempowered creatives use their intellectual property to build impact, generational wealth, and legacy. Patrice and I discussed the path to becoming a partner or opening your own firm, the importance of setting boundaries as an attorney, how she protects her mental health, and the importance of protecting your ideas as a creative entrepreneur.

Session 298: Church Hurt with Dr. Thema Bryant15 Mar 202300:44:37

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

For many, the church represents healing, faith, and community. But what happens when our church communities have been responsible for our harm instead of our healing? To discuss this complex and sensitive topic, this week we're joined by Dr. Thema Bryant a Licensed Psychologist, Ordained Minister, and the 2023 president of the American Psychological Association. In our conversation, we discussed why it is important for faith communities and psychological communities to align, how religious institutions can create more ethical standards to protect members from abuse, and how to navigate feelings of anger toward God after surviving abuse in the church.

Session 366: A Guide to Getting Started On Becoming A Therapist03 Jul 202400:51:41

Some of you may know that July is one of my favorite months of the year, and that’s because it’s when we observe Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, we’ve chosen the theme, Holding Space for Healers, putting the spotlight on the therapists and all those who’ve dedicated their careers to holding space for others. All month long, you can expect conversations centered around the experiences and perspectives of mental health professionals.

To kick the month off, we’re sharing a compilation of some of the greatest gems, tips, and insights from our 3-part “Becoming a Therapist” series. You’ll hear from my accomplished and brilliant colleagues — Josephine Ampaw Greene, Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, Dr. D’Andria Jackson, and Dr. Donna Oriowo – as they share their advice on navigating the licensure process, doing the internal work necessary before seeing clients, some of the practical and financial concerns involved with being a therapist, and what it looks like to take care of yourself outside of your work as a therapist.

Session 295: A Conversation On Healthy Friendships with Devi Brown22 Feb 202300:57:23

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Y’all! My debut book, Sisterhood Heals, will be out on June 27, 2023 and you can officially pre-order your copy right now at sisterhoodheals.com! This is such a huge accomplishment and I can’t wait for all of the incredible conversations I know we’re going to have once you get your copy and can check it out.

In honor of this huge milestone, I wanted to share a very special conversation with you this week. At the end of last year, Wellness educator, Author, and Podcast Host, Devi Brown, who’s been a guest here on the podcast a few times, invited me to be a guest on her podcast, Dropping Gems. Devi didn’t know it at the time but I was struggling with edits to the book and this one conversation with her reinvigorated my spirit and gave me a whole new excitement about the material. It felt like she had seen the pages even though it wasn’t yet done. I feel like that’s how sisterhood works sometimes, you don’t always know what you need and then a sister shows up with an answer you weren’t expecting. In this conversation we chatted about setting boundaries with compassion in friendship, reciprocity in friendship, and how having difficult conversations can often bring us closer.

              Session 294: Understanding Anti-Fat Bias15 Feb 202300:38:55

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

In the recent news cycle, there have been a handful of videos trending that participate in Anti-Fat rhetoric. These pieces of media work to diminish the fat acceptance movement utilizing scare tactics like shame and ridicule under the guise of “tough love.” In actuality, these methods of behavior are rooted in fatphobia and highlight how much body shaming has been indoctrinated into all of us.

To discuss Anti-Fat bias more at length, this week I’m joined by Author, Advocate, and Yoga Teacher Jessamyn Stanley. As a Fat Black Femme navigating the predominantly white, able-bodied, cisgender world of Yoga, Jessamyn has spent her career breaking down barriers in the wellness industry and showing that all bodies are worthy. In our conversation, we discuss the importance of reclaiming the word Fat, the yoga industrial complex, the power of listening to the teacher that lives inside us all, and how practicing self-care and self-acceptance is an act of service to the community around you.

Session 293: Black Women & The Superwoman Schema08 Feb 202300:32:19

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

We often sing praises of the “strong Black woman,” but the moniker is a double-edged sword. Black women are strong, calm, and nurturing while constantly pushing aside our well-being and surviving in silence. There’s a name for this phenomenon, the Superwoman Schema or Syndrome. Today I'm joined by Dr. Cheryl Woods- Giscombe, the woman who developed the groundbreaking conceptual framework to explore how Black women experience stress. Dr. Woods- Giscombe is a distinguished associate professor of quality of life, health promotion, and wellness at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on how stress leads to health disparities among African Americans. In our conversation, we discuss the origins of the Black “Superwoman” trope, how the effects of “Superwoman” syndrome show up in our everyday lives, and tips for those struggling with taking off their capes.

Bonus, The Best Man: Final Chapters03 Feb 202300:51:48

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Since its 1999 theatrical premiere The Best Man franchise has been a beloved staple within our community. It was the talk of the town once again when the sequel, The Best Man Holiday, debuted in 2013. And now, 24 years later, under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee and featuring the original acclaimed cast aka the “Justice League of Black Hollywood.” The Best Man Final Chapters has once again ignited our conversations on what it means to be in community with friends and family. The kind of interpersonal relationships that know you well enough to tell you about yourself and hold space for you when you’ve lost who you are.

To discuss The Best Man: Final Chapters in-depth, this week, I'm in conversation with 2 more incredible members of the team, Content Director, Kamron Taylor and Content Specialist, Gorgeous West.  In our conversation we explore, how the limited series met and missed our expectations, which character dynamics we were most enthralled by and disappointed in, and how we feel knowing that these are our final moments with Quentin, Shelby, Harper, Robyn, Murch, Candace, Lance, and Jordan. This episode does contain spoilers.

Session 292: Quiet Firing & Life After Layoffs01 Feb 202300:46:34

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Within the last few months you might have seen or heard the term “quiet firing” circulating on your local news stations, LinkedIn profiles, or social media accounts. The term refers to a method used by employers to drive employees to quit on their own volition. To discuss quiet firing more at length, this week I’m joined by Dr. Ella F. Washington, an organizational psychologist, DEI expert, and Professor of Practice at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. In Part 1 of our conversation we discuss how to identify if quiet firing is happening in your workplace, the psychological effects of being quietly fired, and how biases and a lack of managerial training in the workplace impact how managers give critical feedback to employees. In Part 2 of our conversation we also hear the first hand testimony of TBG Community Member, Flo, who found herself out of work in the midst of the pandemic.

For many, the beginning of a new year can evoke feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. How do I start a new year on the right foot when I’m still so utterly exhausted from the previous year?  To assist us with centering ourselves for 2023, I’m thrilled to be joined again by Wellness Educator, Meditation Teacher, Reiki Healer, Author, and host of the Dropping Gems podcast, Devi Brown. During our conversation, we explore how to craft a schedule that allows for self-care practices, narrowing down your focus as you prepare for a new year,  and affirmations to recite to feel grounded and whole. Devi also leads us through a beautiful meditation to assist us in tapping into our power and who we are being called to be in the new year.

Session 285: Wakanda Forever, Producers' Chat30 Nov 202200:46:33

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

In our first introduction to Wakanda, we flocked to the theaters with jubilation and pride to revel in the on-screen magnificence. The characters, costumes, and world-building. But, this time, the experience of going to the movies with family and friends to see the new Black Panther film felt fundamentally different. Many of us were adorned in white, bodies calm, and hearts steady as we prepared for what we knew would be both a cinematic gem and a grieving experience. Grief for the loss of our beloved Chadwick Boseman, our Black Panther, grief for the world that has drastically changed since the original film premiered in 2018, and the private grief we all hold in our hearts for our own meaningful reasons. It all felt like seeing your favorite cousins at a funeral. You're happy to see them because it's been a minute, but you wish it were under different circumstances.

This week, our beloved podcast production team, Cindy, Ellice, and Fredia join me to discuss Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever. We explored the complexities of grief displayed across characters in the film, comment on storylines we were surprised and delighted by, and make predictions for the future of the Black Panther franchise. This episode does contain spoilers.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

This week we’re circling back on an episode from our archive that not only matches the literal season we are in but also reflects the world we’re still trying to figure out how to navigate. Growing up, you might have heard that people’s moods change with the season. But did you know that there’s actually some science behind that? Despite Fall & Winter being a time for family traditions and celebrations, it’s also a time when more people may experience feelings of sadness, irritability, and fatigue. In this conversation with Dr. Allycin Powell-Hicks, we talked about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), tips for managing depressive symptoms, how we can tell if symptoms are something we should be concerned about, how to support ourselves in this reimagined holiday season, and some of the relationship challenges that arose during the pandemic and how to manage them.

Session 280: The Criminalization of Black Youth19 Oct 202200:42:49

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

If you’re joining us in the United States, our local elections are right around the corner. A time to advocate for what we believe in and call for reform in this country, a political right many Black women fought for in the past and continue to fight  for today. For some of us, the ballots will include options to promote criminal justice reform and, more specifically, police reform. The history of police activity within the Black American community is lengthy and muddled with trauma. Yet, one facet of that history that is too often overlooked is the police’s history with Black children.

This week I’m joined by Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law and former Lead Attorney of the Juvenile Unit at the D.C. Public Defender Service, Kristin Henning. We discussed the narrative that exists around fearing Black children, how Black children are criminalized for adolescent behavior, how over-policing impacts mental health and identify formation, and how public health approaches in schools and within our communities can remove the footprint of police in the everyday lives of Black children.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

It’s officially spooky season y’all! For many of us, the idea of gazing into the darkest parts of ourselves is more terrifying than any Halloween thriller or monster movie we could ever watch. It can difficult emotional work to dig up the parts of ourselves that we’d rather bury six feet under. The repressed parts of ourselves often challenge who we think we are and bring up feelings we’d rather forget. But what if we learned to integrate and accept the parts of ourselves we hide in the dark? What if uncovering the parts of ourselves we’re hiding in the shadows will illuminate who we really want to be?

This week I’m joined by licensed therapist and author of The Shadow Work Workbook: Self-Care Exercises for Healing Your Trauma and Exploring Your Hidden Self, Jor-El Caraballo. Our conversation explores how shadow work allows for more self acceptance and living a more aligned life and the hidden gifts and talents that may be locked away in our shadow selves.

Session 278: ICYMI, What You Need to Know About Domestic Violence05 Oct 202200:33:04

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Historically, Black women are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence. However, the pandemic has exacerbated violence and abuse toward Black women. Due to the health and financial challenges of COVID-19, many Black women have been isolated in their homes and unable to find safety from abusive partners. As we commemorate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month this month, I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss the critical conversation I had with Dr. Shanita Brown in 2019. Dr. Brown is a licensed professional counselor, speaker, educator and trainer in NC that fosters transformative and empowering dialogue about intimate partner violence & mental health wellness.

She and I chatted about how you can recognize the signs of domestic violence, why it’s important to understand domestic violence in the context of power and control as opposed to anger management, and how you can support a loved one who may be in a relationship with an abusive partner. Plus, Dr. Brown shared tons of incredible resources for anyone seeking additional help.

                TBG U: Neurodivergency In College25 Jun 202400:35:22

Congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the inaugural class of Therapy for Black Girls University. Whether packing for a new year on campus, thinking through your gap year, enrolling in a community college, or grabbing your stoles for graduation, TBG U is here to help you thrive at this stage of your life and beyond.

College, an experience already notorious for its difficulty, can be a lot harder to navigate if you’re also dealing with a medical disorder or learning disability. These experiences are covered under the term neurodivergent, and today we’re shining light on what it looks like to pursue an education as a neurodivergent person.

Joining us today to talk about their experience as a neurodivergent college student is Chicago-based creative, Kai Foster. Kai has humorously documented the ups and downs of young adulthood via sit-down chats, vlogs, and poetry since 2017. Beyond the camera, Kai attends film school and pursues independent documentary projects.

During our conversation, we discuss what it means to be neurodivergent, the importance of on-campus accommodations, and how to advocate for your needs when a professor is reluctant to understand them.

Session 277: Cultivating Friendships In Adulthood28 Sep 202200:55:39

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Whether you’re looking to make new friends, maintaining an existing friendship, or wanting to remove yourself from a friend group all together, the process of cultivating healthy friendships is a lesson often overlooked in our textbooks and general life skills. But, why is that? When having and being a friend is a core aspect of so many of our adult lives.

This week, Psychologist, friendship expert, and NY Times Best Selling Author Dr. Marisa G. Franco joins us again to discuss her new book, Platonic, How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make And Keep Friends. Our conversation explores how avoiding conflict is not helping your friendships, how your attachment style is showing up in your platonic relationships, the difference between dependency and friendship, and how to break up with a friend amicably.
