Historic Labour GAIN in Earlsdon ft. Cllr Anthony Tucker
25 Jun 2021
00:24:30
Last month's local elections left much to be desired for many Labour Party members, particularly those in the West Midlands. From many Labour Councillors across the region losing their seats to Liam Byrne's unfortunate loss in the Mayoral race - it's hard to imagine much to feel hopeful about. However, over in Earlsdon, a leafy ward in the suburbs of Coventry, Anthony Tucker gained a council seat from the Conservatives to complete a set of three Labour councillors for the ward; an historic first for Earlsdon!
In this episode, Nathan and Marie from the West Midlands Young Fabians chat with Cllr Anthony Tucker to find out about Earlsdon, what went right in his campaign and what we can learn from it, the importance of young people standing as councillors and much more.
This week's episode is an interview with Thom Brooks. Thom is an award-winning author, columnist, policy advisor, and political philosopher who is President of the Society of Legal Scholars and a member of the Fabian Society executive committee.

Gareth tells us his favourite things about Stoke; from the city's historic pottery industry to their famous oatcakes, giving a real insight into the area and the issues that are key to the constituents which Gareth once represented. We asked Gareth for his thoughts on why Stoke-on-Trent Central turned blue in 2019 as well as his ideas on how to reconnect with and win back voters in The Potteries.
With the Scottish Parliament elections fast approaching, we are joined by Albie, Cecily, and John from the Young Scottish Fabians to discuss all things Scottish Labour and what their path to success will look like in Scotland's everchanging political landscape.

Of course, we couldn't avoid the recent political theatrics within Scottish politics, discussing the Holyrood Inquiry, the emergence of Alex Salmond's Alba Party, the ebb and flow of Independence polling and what this all means for Labour, The Union, and Scotland itself.

In the third episode in our International Women's Day series on the theme #choosetochallenge, we are joined by fellow Young Fabians and podcast regulars Emily Batchelor and Amy Dwyer!
Emily and Amy spoke with Marie about the different ways in which our patriarchal society is failing women and girls, discussing issues such as public sexual harassment, revenge porn, objectification of women and girls, lack of provision for domestic abuse survivors and male control over female sexuality. They propose ideas to tackle these issues with educational and legislative reform to improve the rights of women and girls.
In the second instalment of our International Women's Day series, our Women's Officer Nicki Adeleke is joined by Taiwo Owatemi MP for a chat about her experience and journey from being a pharmacist to becoming an MP in 2019. Taiwo also spoke about her time within the Young Fabians, her experience being a woman in politics and much more.
For our first episode in our International Women's Day series on the theme #choosetochallenge, we discuss the importance of embedding gender equality in our schools and our education system and ideas for how to achieve this.
Our discussion focused on three key ideas: Introducing gender equality into the curriculum implicitly by addressing the gender data gap; To explicitly challenge gender inequality and everyday sexism, and to embed specific/explicit gender equality education into the curriculum with the aim to stop making feminism a ‘dirty’ word.
This episode idea was suggested to us by YF member Katharine Roddy as part of our IWD series. Over the next two weeks, we will be releasing many episodes centred around the theme #choosetochallenge.
This week we are joined by Maria Eagle MP, Sally Gimson and George Richmond to discuss the problems facing Labour within rural communities and what must be done to address this to connect with voters in these areas. The BBC is undeniably one of Britains greatest cultural institutions, having produced some of the greatest shows and services of all time. However, having experienced extreme funding cuts within the past 10 years and faced with a government who actively want to dismantle it, it is in peril. Many hostile forces have risen against the BBC, with recent calls to #DefundTheBBC and the claims that it is no longer fit for purpose and cannot rival the new subscriptions giants Netflix or Amazon Prime, many people (overwhelmingly from the right) are calling for an end to the license fee and for the BBC to find other funding avenues.
Not to mention the huge debate around the supposed impartiality of the BBC, with attacks from the right claiming it is too left-wing, liberal and woke - to some on the left calling it a mouthpiece for the establishment.
In today’s episode, I am joined by Patrick Barwise, Emeritus Professor in Management and Marketing at London Business School, former chairman of consumer organisation Which? and co-author, alongside Peter York, of the book 'The War Against the BBC'.
'The War Against the BBC' looks into many of the threats the BBC is facing, it debunks common myths and attacks against the BBC, the dangers of introducing advertising or a subscription-based service to the BBC and makes the case on so many fronts for why it’s so important for us to protect the BBC and the license fee.
I spoke to Patrick Barwise earlier this week for a discussion about his book and all of these different aspects!

Black British History and Diversifying the Labour Party w/ Jermain Jackman & Nicki Adeleke
06 Nov 2020
00:47:20
This year's events have brought many conversations regarding Black issues to the forefront. With the BLM protests sparking discussions about police brutality and racial profiling; Coronavirus exposing the deep, existing inequalities against Black people in the UK; and the first Black History Month debate in Parliament in 5 years, addressing the growing calls to decolonise the school curriculum and make UK education more representative of BAME history.
In this week's episode, we are joined by political activist and singer-songwriter Jermain Jackman, who is running to become the first black male member of The Labour Party's NEC, as well as newly-elected YF Exec member, Nicki Adeleke.
We talked about Black British History, the importance of teaching Britain's colonial past, the underlying issues within the Labour Party and what needs to be done to make it a more representative and inclusive place for Black members, and much more!
The North of England has been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Having the highest amount of cases and deaths in the country has led to strict lockdown restrictions for months on end, understandably causing tensions in the North to grow. However, last week another sharp blow was delivered by the government to Andy Burnham and the people of Greater Manchester through an insufficient amount of funding to support the area and reverse the damage that Tier 3 will bring to the area.
It's worth remembering that Boris Johnson, in his first speech as Prime Minister, made clear that he would not take the support from the 'red wall' for granted and expressed his intent to 'level up' the North, but so far it's been quite the opposite, with more attention and support being afforded to London and parts of the North feeling dejected and forgotten.
The North-South divide is a very real thing which more than ever represents deep inequality and growing disillusionment - with the Covid crisis exposing the many gaps between the two sides of England.
This week I'm joined by three fellow Young Fabians: Donya Jeyabalasingham, Amy Dwyer and Tom Laing for a chat about all of these different factors behind the exacerbation of the North-South Divide in recent months.
Interview w/ Shadow Education Secretary, Kate Green MP
22 Oct 2020
00:34:42
For the past 10 years, consecutive governments have certainly not made life any easier for young people. From the hike in tuition costs and removal of maintenance grants to the funding cuts for schools and rising class numbers, the list goes on. However, in recent months, the government has been so clearly ineffective and incompetent in their inability to provide the basic support that school children, students and the whole education sector deserves throughout this crisis.
In this week's episode, I'm joined by Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, to discuss the ways which consecutive governments have failed young people and the education sector, as well as throughout the pandemic and what the Labour Party's vision for education reform looks like.
We also talked about Kate's work in tackling child poverty and social and educational inequalities prior to becoming an MP, as well as her experience within the Fabian Society, of which she is a member of the Executive Committee and former Chair!
With just a week to go until New Zealand's general election, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Party seem set for a historic victory after a campaign focused on their highly effective response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
This week we spoke to Kiri Allan, a New Zealand Labour Party MP and Samantha Wood, the President of New Zealand Young Labour about their successes within their time in government, what a victory in the upcoming election would mean for them as well as what the UK Labour Party and other left-wing parties around the world can learn from the NZ Labour Party.
We also spoke to Joe Pagani, a former Comms Advisor at Progressive Centre UK and New Zealand Labour Party activist, who gave us more of an insight into the campaign trail and the vast support from the public garnered by Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Party.

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is often been referred to as Europe's last dictator. But could this all be about to change? Earlier this month, Belarus held a presidential election which it was announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation undemocratically since 1994, had once again won with a huge majority. From then until now, Belarusians have taken to the streets in their masses through protests, rallies and worker strikes, on an unprecedented scale, calling for Lukashenko's resignation.

This week, as we all look on, horrified, at police brutality in the US, we discuss racial inequalities in the UK, in the Labour Party and in all aspects of our lives. What, if anything, can we do about it politically and policy-wise? Joining the podcast are Lewis Iwu, CEO and co-founder of Prospect Union; Leon Alleyne-McLaughlin, Young Fabians secretary and co-founder of the YF BAME advocacy group; and Redha Rubaie and Mark McVitie, podcast regulars. Moderating is producer Carolina Saludes.
To all our female listeners: we want you in our podcast, so if you’re passionate about a topic just get in touch with us at podcast@youngfabians.org.uk. We want to hear from you.
