Lapse, Relapse, and Collapse13 Nov 202400:45:25

Get excited! DoctorXDietitian is now The Weight Loss Collab! Dr. Dovec and Hannah are still here to bring you all the fun while helping you along your weight loss and health journey!

In this episode, Dr. Betsy Dovec and dietitian Hannah Schuyler dive into three common phases in any weight loss or personal transformation journey: lapse, relapse, and collapse. They discuss how these setbacks naturally show up in the lives of those preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery, pursuing medical weight loss, or even just aiming for personal growth. Through real-life examples and expert advice, Betsy and Hannah explore why each of these stages happens and how they can become stepping stones rather than obstacles.

They define lapse as a minor slip from your plan, such as an unplanned meal or missed workout, emphasizing self-compassion and learning from triggers. Relapse occurs when these slips become more frequent, often due to stress or life challenges. In these cases, reconnecting with support, reassessing goals, and breaking the relapse pattern are key strategies. Finally, they address collapse, when old habits take over entirely, sharing how to reignite commitment by starting with small steps and refocusing on your original motivation.

Each setback, they explain, offers an opportunity for growth, not just in weight loss but in all areas of personal development. By listening in, you’ll learn practical strategies to approach any setback with resilience and a growth mindset. Join us in this episode of The Weight Loss Collab for an empowering look at handling setbacks, staying on track, and achieving lasting transformation.

For the Fellas18 Jun 202300:47:24

The DoctorXDietitian duo chat with Jason about his emotional childhood struggles and sneaking food to cope, succeeding on Fen-Phen only to regain all the weight back. He felt trapped, scared, and alone in his 520-pound body.

Being unable to drive his young daughters alone was the breaking point that led him to bariatric surgery. Dr. Dovec recounts one of the most challenging conversations she’s ever had with a patient in the pre-op waiting area and Jason’s reaction to her tough love.

Jason vulnerably recounts life’s highs and lows and how he’s maintaining a 300-pound weight loss these days at a fit 220 pounds.

June is Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day marks the end of Men’s Health Week which raises awareness for a man’s physical and mental health, and social connection.

Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity. It significantly lowers BMI, improves comorbidity severity, and decreases mortality. Despite these benefits, there is a marked gender difference in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Nationally, only 19% of all bariatric surgeries were performed on men despite them having higher BMIs and comorbidities than female patients.

Men, this is your reminder to take charge of your health! Jason hopes he inspires someone to change their life - maybe, it’s yours.

Transfer of Addiction After Bariatric Surgery10 Feb 202300:44:37

Why are we doing an episode about addiction?

Because for many patients, food is their drug. The transfer of compulsive eating behavior to other forms of addiction is more common than you'd think. It can occur in up to 30% of post-op bariatric surgery patients.

The DoctorXDietitian team tackles the risk factors for developing addictive behaviors after weight loss surgery.

Just like obesity, addiction does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone, so identifying the signs and symptoms and, most importantly, knowing how and where to reach out for help is critical.

To improve ourselves, we must first know ourselves. Admitting you are struggling is a courageous first step. The bariatric community can be a safe haven with a multitude of resources to help you cope and get through life's most challenging times.

Pasta, Potatoes, & Breads, Oh My!20 Jan 202300:51:20

So, what is the deal with carbs? Good, bad, overhyped?

This DoctorXDietitian episode breaks down carbohydrates in the diet - the different types, how much you need, and the best ways to incorporate them into a balanced diet

Along with proteins and fats, carbohydrates are one of three main nutrients (macronutrients or “macros”) found in foods and drinks.

The DoctorXDietitian duo will round out their macronutrient conversation with the oh-so-confusing and sometimes scary carbs. However, it is important to learn how to embrace carbs in the diet, regardless of where you are in your bariatric and weight loss journey.

Carbohydrates, aka carbs, are the body's preferred source of fuel. Your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose, or blood sugar, is the main source of energy for your cells, tissues, and organs. Not having enough carbs in your diet can make you feel sluggish, experience digestive issues and even have bad breath. Fun times! ;)

Standing on the Edge01 Oct 202400:57:46

In this episode, Dr. Betsy Dovec and Hannah Schuyler, RD, tackle one of the most significant challenges bariatric patients face—doubt. Standing on the edge of a life-changing decision like bariatric surgery is a mix of excitement and fear, where the line between breakthroughs and setbacks can feel razor-thin. But is that fear enough to hold you back, or could it propel you toward the life you’ve always wanted?

Key Topics Discussed:

1. The Fear of the Unknown:

  • Bariatric surgery represents a profound transformation, but the doubts are real: Will I fail? What will eating be like? Will my friends and family support me? Dr. Dovec and Hannah explore these common questions and share why they’re normal—yet surmountable.

2. Addressing Emotional Fears:

  • The fear of failure can be paralyzing, but it’s important to remember that this journey is about reclaiming your life, not just losing weight. The hosts discuss how bariatric surgery is more than a physical tool—it’s an opportunity for deep mental and emotional transformation.

3. Project Reset & Emotional Eating:

  • How Project Reset helps participants confront bariatric grief and emotional eating. By using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, patients learn to reshape their relationship with food and move beyond self-doubt.

4. Physical Concerns:

  • Dr. Dovec and Hannah address concerns about post-surgery changes like hair loss and potential weight regain. The great news: hair grows back, and with the right guidance, maintaining long-term success is achievable.

5. Overcoming External Judgments:

  • One of the hardest parts of this journey is managing the opinions of others. Dr. Dovec emphasizes that this decision is about you, not anyone else’s judgment. The support you need will be there, but this journey starts with your own commitment to a healthier, happier life.

6. What If You Succeed?

  • The hosts encourage listeners to shift their mindset from “What if I fail?” to “What if I fly?” This decision could lead to a healthier body, more confidence, and a life free from self-doubt.

7. Taking the Leap:

  • Standing on the edge of change is terrifying, but it’s also exhilarating. Dr. Dovec and Hannah challenge listeners to ask themselves: What if staying the same is more terrifying than the leap? Sometimes, saying yes to comfort means saying no to transformation.
