Carlyle's Head of Global Wealth, Shane Clifford on Why It's Time to Rethink Private Markets08 Nov 202501:00:13

Send us Fan Mail

We are thrilled to present a SPECIAL EDITION of The Wall Street Skinny. This episode, recorded live at Carlyle’s NYC offices, is a candid interview with one of our most impressive (yet shockingly down-to-earth) guests to-date: Shane Clifford, Carlyle’s Head of Global Wealth.

If you’re wondering how “Global Wealth” fits into one of the world’s most prestigious private equity mega funds, you’re not alone. We set the record straight about what Global Wealth is, how it relates to the rest of the business, and how it is reshaping the investing landscape.  Historically, access to private markets was typically reserved for institutional investors. Today, Carlyle is opening select private market capabilities to the wealth channel, all while raising the bar on transparency and education.

We discuss the shifting market environment, explain why the term “alternatives” has become anachronistic, and dig into what “responsible democratization” really requires: specific fund structures (think evergreen/perpetual vs. interval funds), liquidity education, disclosure, and portfolio construction that behaves differently than it does in the public markets.

Shane explains areas which areas he thinks may see the most growth in the near term, and we dig into what allowing individuals to access the private capital markets via defined contribution plans (i.e., 401(k) investments) *might* mean for everyday investors should those changes come to pass.

This is also a “Distribution 101” playbook, where we learn the ropes of a career path that wasn’t even an option to us during our time in the industry.

If you advise clients or want to work in the private capital ecosystem, take note. Carlyle is changing how the world accesses the private markets, and this episode will change how you think about private capital altogether.

TWSS is not a client of, or investor in funds managed by, Carlyle. Compensation was paid in connection with this social promotion. Statements made reflect the opinion of the speaker(s) and may not be representative of all views, and compensation may give rise to conflicts of interest. Breaking Down Meta and xAI's "Creative" Off-Balance-Sheet Data Center Financing Plus Deep Dive into The Fed's Insane Press Conference01 Nov 202500:51:18

Send us Fan Mail

In this week’s episode, we get into the Fed’s 25 basis point rate cut, Powell’s chaotic press conference before diving into Meta’s creative data center financing which is a lesson on project financing and lease accounting, and finally the growing blur between public and private credit.

The Fed’s October meeting delivered the expected 25 bps cut but Powell’s tone afterward left markets rattled. While announcing a pause in quantitative tightening, he hinted that December isn’t a done deal, sparking confusion and volatility. Jen breaks down the mechanics behind QT, the Fed’s balance sheet strategy, and why even subtle changes in how they handle T-bill reinvestments could ripple across the yield curve.

Then we shift to earnings season and Meta’s fascinating case study in project finance. Their $30 billion Hyperion data center project with Blue Owl blends corporate finance, lease accounting, and private credit innovation, raising questions about off-balance-sheet leverage, credit spreads, and who really wins in these structures.

We wrap with thoughts on how every firm on Wall Street is morphing into everything else—private credit arms at hedge funds, PE firms doing lending, and why that might both dilute and amplify systemic risk. All that, plus Halloween costumes, pumpkin parades, and the realities of parenting in chaos.

89. The Real Life “Billions": Equity Long/Short Hedge Fund Legends feat. Kat Sosnick03 Aug 202401:18:43

Send us Fan Mail

We had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Kat Sosnick, a woman whose impressive career spans three decades running portfolios of up to a billion dollars at some of the world’s most legendary Equity Long/Short Hedge Funds, including Tiger Management, Pequot, and Perry Capital.  Kat is a specialist in the consumer retail space, and shares stories with us of how she applied her passion for investigative journalism to doing “grassroots” analysis at the core of her investment theses.  Kat gave us the scoop on how she decided to invest in winners like Costco and Amazon, how she earned the nickname "The Grim Reaper" for her fearless shorts of other companies, how she beat stage four cancer and navigated motherhood in one of the most secretive and notoriously male dominated segments of high finance, and how she combats imposter syndrome in her current coaching business.  She tells us how she had to stop watching "Billions" because it hit too close to home!

Whether you are considering a career as an investor or simply want the inside scoop on some of the most prominent hedge funds of all time, you'll want to listen to Kat's invaluable advice gleaned from decades of personal experience.

*Correction: the Investment Banker mentioned in the context of the Jeff Bezos meeting was at Deutsche Bank, not Morgan Stanley.

86. Private Credit 101: Asset-Based Lending Feat. Keri Findley, Founder and CEO of Tacora Capital20 Jul 202400:56:57

Send us Fan Mail

We are kicking off our multi-part foray into the world of Private Credit --- arguably the most talked-about investment vertical of 2024 --- with brilliant and hilarious Keri Findley, founder and CEO of Tacora Capital.  If you're interested in learning about Securitized Products, prestigious exit opportunities from the Sales, Trading, & Research division of an Investment Bank, or the career path towards landing a job in Private Credit, this episode is a MUST LISTEN.

Keri is our first guest who has a background in Securitized Products, and she has a superpower of being able to explain complex concepts in a simple way.  Keri walks us through her early career in ABS CDO research at Morgan Stanley, her quick exit to the buyside --- where she was a Portfolio Manager at Third Point in her mid-20s (!!) --- and the journey of starting her own Private Capital Firm.

With Keri, we also explore the themes of how blurred the lines can be between our personal and professional lives on Wall Street.  Her candid discussion of what she did to fit in early on in her career, how she handles gossip and negativity, and her decision to have her employees sign prenups on their carry illuminates the complexities of being a senior female investor in today's world.

85. The Skinny on Citadel White Label Sales & Trading18 Jul 202400:26:06

Send us Fan Mail

In today's episode, we discuss Citadel's potential white label offering of their Equities trading operations to investment banks --- discussed in this article as something to fill the gap of banks pulling back from Equities Sales & Trading:  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-11/citadel-securities-crafts-plan-to-shake-up-banks-trading-desks

We also discuss the theoretical possibility that something similar might emerge in the Fixed Income space as well as capital requirements remain a challenge for banks.  We know banks are continually thinking about how to strategically allocate balance sheet in light of a previous article discussing how they've already established a pattern of outsourcing balance sheet to the Private Equity & Private Credit realm.

84. How to Rob a Bank: Inside Financial Fraud Red Teams13 Jul 202400:40:53

Send us Fan Mail

Financial fraud is something we hear about ALL the time.  It feels like there's a new headline about losses stemming from a hack at a financial institution constantly, and we've all seen shows like The Tinder Swindler where scams of individual consumers can have huge consequences.

The problem with most fraud prevention?  It's backward-looking.  By the time you solve one problem, criminals have found a new way to steal your money.  We sat down with Greenway Solutions, a firm working to revolutionize the space not only for financial institutions, but also for their customers, via the use of "red teams".  These red teams can at times sound like complex spy operations --- yet at other times are deceptively simple in their approach.  We talk about the (terrifying!) magnitude of the financial fraud landscape, how it is changing in the face of AI and deepfakes, and some of the most surprising ways that fraudsters are staying ahead of conventional security measures.

ALEX RODRIGUEZ: On the Timberwolves, Sports Investing, Real Estate and VC06 Sep 202501:13:41

Send us Fan Mail

Alex Rodriguez is not only one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history, 22 seasons, 14 All-Star selections, and three American League MVP award, but also the founder and CEO of A-Rod Corp. Through A-Rod Corp, he has built a diversified platform across three pillars: sports, real estate, and venture capital. His portfolio spans ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx, more than $2 billion invested in multifamily and other real estate, and over 60 venture investments in technology, fitness, media, and consumer brands.

In this episode, Rodriguez explains how his interest in investing began at a young age, shaped by both his upbringing and the hard data he studied about professional baseball careers. Growing up in a single-parent household, he watched his mother juggle two jobs to make ends meet, which instilled in him both a fear of financial insecurity and a drive to build long-term stability. He breaks down how he approaches each asset class, from viewing team ownership as a long-duration, low-leverage asset, to focusing on levered cash flows in real estate, to applying his “VCP” filter, Vision, Capital, People, for venture investments. He also shares the story of setting the then-record $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers in 2001 and how Warren Buffett personally insured the final years of that deal.

Finally he  talks about the importance of investing early and often, lessons he instilled in his daughters when they were in elementary school, and why it's so important to invest early and often. It’s a conversation that connects the mindset of an elite athlete with the discipline of a savvy investor.

Happy 4th of July!  We wanted to discuss an article from Fortune Magazine that's been making the rounds, where the COO of Blackrock said "We have more and more conviction that we need people who majored in history, in English, and things that have nothing to do with finance or technology" (article linked below).  We discuss the pros and cons of coming to finance with a background in the humanities, especially in the context of how AI will impact jobs at junior levels in different ways.

We also took a trip down memory lane to celebrate the 19th anniversary of Kristen's calamitous, yet ultimately fortuitous, visit to NYC to visit Jen during her junior year summer internship.

79. What’s the Max Age to Break into Wall Street and Tech | TWSS x IGLE27 Jun 202401:13:31

Send us Fan Mail

We get asked every day by listeners of ALL ages, "am I too old to start a career in finance??"  When you ostensibly need to have internships on your resume by the time you are 19 years old, and when on-cycle PE recruiting starts before new college grads even set foot in IBD training, it's easy to feel that way.  But on the flipside, young people are often dismissed as inexperienced and excluded from the big conversations when their age is deemed to be a negative.  So, let's talk about age in the industry.

We have a special crossover episode for you today with tech industry expert and TWSS bestie Maureen Wiley Clough, the host of "It Gets Late Early", a podcast devoted to exploring themes of age and experience in the tech world.  We discuss age related hiring issues across the spectrum of elite jobs like tech and high finance, share personal stories, and outline specific tips for breaking into the industry at older ages.

78. What It Takes to Become the Most Powerful Woman on Wall Street Feat. Zoe Cruz, Founder and CEO of Menai Financial Group. 22 Jun 202400:54:50

Send us Fan Mail

Today we are speaking with Zoe Cruz, who was the Head of the Fixed Income Division at Morgan Stanley when Jen started her career as a summer intern back in 2005, and who ultimately went on to become President of the firm when Kristen started full-time at MS in 2007.  She rose to the absolute upper echelons of high finance at a time when it was virtually unheard of for a woman to reach that level of leadership.

Zoe has an incredible story.  She started her Wall Street career as a young mother and built the FX business from scratch at one of the world's most elite investment banks.  Zoe was at one point ranked number 10 on the Forbes list of the world’s top 100 most powerful women, has previously topped Fortune magazine’s list of highest paid women in the world, has served on countless boards and advisory councils, started a macro hedge fund (cue Elle Woods…”I mean, what, like it’s hard?”), and she is currently the founder and CEO of Menai Financial Group, a firm focused on the world of “defi” (or decentralized finance).

Our conversation with Zoe is both a candid look at evolving gender roles on Wall Street and an exciting glimpse into "the next big thing" in finance from the perspective of one of the industry's biggest trailblazers.

Parallels Between Managing a Hedge Fund and a Baseball Team | "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis Deep Dive30 Aug 202501:26:38

Send us Fan Mail

In this week’s episode of The Wall Street Skinny, Kristen and Jen return to one of their favorite formats: dissecting the finance lessons hidden inside pop culture. This time, they take on Moneyball, a Michael Lewis classic that at first glance looks like a baseball story, but in reality is a masterclass in statistics, valuation, and market inefficiencies. Far more than just a sports narrative, Moneyball is about how disciplined analysis and data-driven decision-making can disrupt entrenched orthodoxy, whether on Wall Street or on the baseball field.

Kristen and Jen break down how Billy Beane transformed the Oakland A’s into one of the most competitive teams in baseball despite having one of the smallest budgets. From identifying undervalued assets (players) through on-base percentage and walks, to gaming the draft system with the savvy of a hedge fund trader, the discussion highlights how Beane’s approach mirrors the strategies of top portfolio managers. The episode draws explicit parallels between constructing a winning baseball roster and building a resilient investment portfolio, making it essential listening for anyone serious about finance.

The conversation also zooms out to compare the economics of MLB with the NFL and NBA, where league structures, revenue sharing, and salary caps create vastly different financial dynamics. Along the way, the hosts spotlight themes of efficiency, market psychology, and the importance of independent thinking in both sports and investing. It’s the perfect prelude to next week’s special episode featuring one of the greatest Major League players of all time.

67. Finance, Philosophy, and the Yen Carry Trade feat. John Normand11 May 202400:53:23

Send us Fan Mail

We often talk about institutional investors as the allocators of capital to the public and private markets.  They are huge, active participants driving supply and demand dynamics in the fixed income and equity markets, and they often make sizable investments as LPs in private equity and private credit funds.  But what exactly are they trying to accomplish, and why?

We sat down with John Normand --- the former head of Cross-Asset Strategy at JP Morgan and the current head of Investment Strategy at Australian Super --- to discuss investment strategy at a superannuation fund (what we in the US think of as a "pension fund").  John is one of our most accomplished and distinguished guests to date.   Not only does he explain the mechanics of defined benefit / defined contribution plans, but he also shares his philosophical perspective on the ethics of investing, his current views on the macro environment, and a crash course in one of the staples of fixed income markets: the Yen carry trade.  This episode is a must listen for anyone who wants to understand how some of the biggest allocators of capital in both the public and private markets approach investment strategy.

63. Credit Strategy 101 feat. Dominique Toublan27 Apr 202401:08:43

Send us Fan Mail

Credit Strategy: how does it work, who are the players, and what are the career opportunities?  Today we are discussing the structure of the Credit Strategy desk at an Investment Bank with Dominique Toublan, head of US Credit Strategy at Barclays Capital.

We discuss how you approach the vast world of corporate bonds and distill trends as a strategist, how you reconcile investor sentiment with supply/demand dynamics, and what role are you serving within the ecosystem of Wall Street.  The US Credit market --- meaning, where corporate bonds trade after they've been issued --- is orders of magnitude larger than the US Equities market.  Credit spreads, which are a measure of the riskiness associated with the debt of an individual corporate borrower, are a critical barometer of economic strength/weakness and investor risk appetite.  Understanding these dynamics is essential not only to those who wish to pursue a career in credit strategy, trading, or sales, but also for those who wish to understand the Private Credit markets and the funding dynamics that influence deal making and investment on the Private Equity and Hedge Fund side of the industry.

178. Emergency Episode: Is This The End of the Federal Reserve?27 Aug 202500:34:29

Send us Fan Mail

In this emergency episode of The Skinny on Wall Street, Kristen and Jen dive into the breaking news that President Trump has moved to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over accusations of mortgage fraud. Using this moment as a springboard, they break down the fundamentals of how the Fed works, why its independence is so important, and how politics intersects with monetary policy.

The discussion covers the structure of the Federal Reserve System, the difference between Governors and Presidents, and how the powerful Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) sets interest rates. Kristen and Jen also explain the Fed funds rate, the dot plot, and the toolkit the central bank uses to manage short-term and long-term rates.

Finally, they unpack the risks of political interference in the Fed, why central bank credibility rests as much on perception as on reality, and what this unprecedented move could mean for the future of U.S. monetary policy. 55. Women on Wall Street: Is There a Problem with Female Managers? 03 Apr 202401:10:52

Send us Fan Mail

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article titled "Women Aren't Getting the Big Jobs at Goldman Sachs, and They're Heading for the Exits" (linked below).  That same day, we were asked by our social media community whether our best managers were male or female when we were working at investment banks.  Our answer?  Male.

We received HUNDREDS of messages from our community --- from mostly women --- saying their experience with female managers on Wall Street was overwhelmingly negative.

So we wanted to have a frank, open discussion of these two distinct but very related topics in a public forum to discern what the nature of the problem is and to try and suggest possible solutions.

We are joined by two amazing women for this conversation: Carissa Jordan and Nikki Boulukos, currently the co-founders of Benjamin Talks, a company on a mission to facilitate financial literacy for people of all ages starting with children.  Carissa and Nikki started their careers in Fixed Income and Equities Sales & Trading at Goldman Sachs, and rose through the ranks before exiting for individual reasons we will discuss.

177. The Potential Financial Crisis No One is Talking About: Repocalypse 2.0?26 Aug 202500:40:30

Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of The Wall Street Skinny, Jen unpacks an overlooked risk brewing beneath the surface of financial markets. Why did Jerome Powell, head of the Fed, deliver such a surprisingly “dovish” speech at Jackson Hole? Jen suggests it may be because he sees this liquidity problem coming.

Looking ahead, Kristen and Jen walk listeners through what to watch: not just whether the Fed cuts rates in September (they signaled pretty strongly that is coming) but also whether regulators adjust rules to make it easier for banks to hold Treasuries. Both moves could help ease the pressure.

By breaking down complex concepts like “quantitative tightening” and “repo markets” into plain language, this episode shows how plumbing deep in the financial system can ripple out into markets and the economy, and why these behind-the-scenes moves matter for everyone.
