In this episode we WadeOutThere with Mickey Anderson, from Salt Lake City, Utah.  Mickey grew up in Utah, and was introduced to fly fishing on a trip into the Uinta Mountains with his wrestling team in high school.  He went on to work in the fly fishing industry as an early fly shop owner with Anglers Den and later Fish Tech. 

He has been teaching and instructing fly fishing, fly tying, and fly casting in one way or another for nearly fifty years, and he still finds the time to get out over a hundred times a year, these days spending much of that time exploring the mountains via hiking, backpacking and in his side by side.  

He also has been an avid designer for companies such as William Joseph, and later Rising, where he has won awards for his products and helped introduce the world to things such as the chest pack and net holsters.  

If you have been a member of a fly fishing club, committee, class, or expo in the Wasatch area of Utah… you’ve probably met Mickey.  

We discuss explorations of Utah’s Uinta mountain lakes and tactics for fishing them, including the importance of depth control and fly retrieve.  We also talk about the gear that will make your job easier.  Mickey shares his take on what makes a good fly fishing gear storage system (whether it's a vest, a hip pack, a sling, or just where you put your net) and how to find what works for you.

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Piper Nunn from Fort Collins, CO.  Piper grew up in Colorado, spending time alone on the river even before she found fishing.  It was after she began working in a local bagel shop in Fort Collins, that her co-workers talked her into giving fly fishing a shot. 

She loved it from day one, and from then on, much of her spare time in school was spent on the Poudre River, fishing and finding inspiration for her art.  She loved fly fishing so much actually, that it inspired her to change her college major to fisheries.  It also inspired her to paint more; using the details of her studies to help inform her art, while simultaneously allowing her art to help her move through school. 

Piper began sharing her paintings with the world and soon was receiving numerous commission requests and making a full time living from her art.  But eventually the grind of production, forced her to take a step back from art and realign her passion with the inspiration that started it all. 

We discuss tactics for the Poudre River and how sometimes taking a step back can move you forward in art and fishing.

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Bill Dell from Western Pennsylvania.  Bill grew up fishing the blue gill pond on his family’s farm in Pennsylvania as a boy, and continued to passionately fish through high school and college.  

It was his introduction to steelhead fishing in the Great Lakes that convinced him that his future was in fly fishing.  Bill takes an analytical mind to fly fishing.  Early on, he used his love of numbers to help him organize details about his time on the water, and develop systems for where and how to fish.  Bill also has a passion for photography and has been taking his camera with him in nature from the beginning.  

Today Bill continues his photography and interest in fly fishing tactics as a guide and contributor at Troutbitten. 

We discuss finding the small things that stand out in nature, how to methodically assess which river might be fishing best in Pennsylvania on any given day, and Bill’s thoughts on intentionality in the pace you take while wading a trout stream.

After college in Pennsylvania, Tim moved to Utah to finish his degree in 1977.  He was 21 years old.  He continued learning and fishing in his new trout waters while honing his fly tying skills in an auto repair shop that also sold fly tying and rod building materials.  Tim tied professionally for years while working and fishing in Utah and Idaho.

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Nick Thompson from the Finger Lakes Area of New York.  Nick learned how to fly fish on a fiberglass rod, in a warehouse, on his lunch break, after his boss insisted he take some time away from working twelve hour days.  That was after his first kidney transplant.

As Nick’s relationship with fly fishing grew and his health began to decline, he started an organization called Saved by the Fly to help spread the word about organ donation and connect others to the sport that had helped him through his illness.

Now Nick is healthy again.  On his second kidney transplant, and even more excited to spread the word on how fly fishing helped save his life.

We discuss streamers on the Ausable River and why Nick reminds us all, “don’t forget to live today.”

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Jennings Hester, from Denver, Colorado.  Jennings grew up in the south fishing for bass with spinning gear.  After playing football for Alabama in college, he began going on hikes to help with the depression and anxiety he had been dealing with from an early age. 

When his brother-in-law handed him a fly rod to take into the woods, Jennings realized he had found something important enough for his mental health that he moved his entire family to Colorado to be closer to that environment he was thriving in. 

After the move Jennings began fly fishing more and tying flies.  He also founded the non-profit, Fishing the Good Fight, to help other men dealing with mental health issues through fly fishing. 

We discuss streamer fishing on the North Platte River, and the importance of community in fly fishing and mental health.

In this episode we Wadeouthere with Norm Maktima from Rio Rancho, New Mexico.  Norm grew up fly fishing on his local river after school and in the summers.  At seventeen his father signed him up for an outfitter program in Montana, on the Clark Fork River.  When he came back, he had a job at the local fly shop, and it didn’t take long for him to start guiding and competing in fly fishing. 

In part two of our discussion, Norm talks about how he uses the observations we covered in our last conversation to adapt and change on the river.  He also shares some stories and tactics from fly fishing in Northern New Mexico.

In this episode we Wadeoutthere with Jesse Males from Central Florida.  Jesse grew up with a love of fly fishing, and decided to build his future in the fly fishing community after college.  He left his promising career and spent years learning to fly fish his home waters, while simultaneously refining his fly tying, photography, and videography skills.  

When Jesse moved his family to Costa Rica, there was no turning back.  His saltwater fly tying and guide business took off, and he pushed his film making to award winning new levels.  

We discuss fly fishing the salt water fisheries of Central Florida, the art and function of tying saltwater flies, and scrapping “plan B” to chase your dreams.

In this episode we Wadeoutthere with Camille Egdorf from Bozeman, Montana.  Camille grew up learning to row a drift boat and fly fish on the Bighorn River as a child.  By the time she was a teenager she was guiding in Alaska.  Camille has been working in the fly fishing world her entire life, chasing fly fishing adventures for herself and others around the world.

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Patrick Kilby, from Western Washington.  Patrick’s love of fishing started in Eastern Washington, fishing bobbers with his grandfather.  A photo of a rising trout in a magazine inspired a passion for fly fishing that soon had Patrick tying flies and driving from stream to stream as a teenager.  

After an initial career path in law enforcement didn’t feel like the right fit, he knew that he wanted to try to make a living in the fishing industry.  Patrick began by building fly rods himself, then for an accomplished custom rod builder. 

He became a fly shop manager in Oregon, and finally landed as a fly designer at Rio Flies.  We discuss humility in fly fishing and the under appreciated elements of fly design.

In this episode we Wadeoutthere with Marcos Mazzola from South Florida.  Marcos began his fly fishing journey wading and fishing from a skiff in the saltwater flats with his close friend from school who also became his fly fishing mentor.  As he progressed as a fly fisher, his photography passion began to become more and more intertwined with his love of the outdoors. 

We discuss wade fishing the saltwater flats of South Florida and how fly fishing can help all of us gain perspective and bring down our emotional levels.
