Da Brat: Funkdafied (1994). A Platinum Plaque Fit For A Lady.02 Jul 202400:34:44

In our Season 6 finale, B. Cox is joined by Mac from MacTasticTV to review Chicago lady emcee Da Brat's debut album Funkdafied as it turns 30. Hailing from the west side of "The Chi", Da Brat got her chance at a deal when she won a Chicago rap contest and met the teen group Kriss Kross, who were signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def record label based in Atlanta. At the urging of the group, Dupri listened to her music and signed her to a deal.

The debut album, produced entirely by Dupri, is packed with funk based beats driven by heavy bass lines and punctuated by Da Brat's sharp witted rhymes and barbs on record. The short album was carried by two popular radio singles: The title track "Funkdafied" featuring Dupri and "Give It To You".

The public took to Da Brat and what she had to offer. The album went platinum making her the first solo female emcee to achieve that feat, setting the stage for the rest of the decade and other female counterparts who would follow in her footsteps. It is also the first major rap album from a rap artist from Chicago that broke into mainstream success.

Kanye West-The College Dropout: A Birth Within "The Dynasty"05 Feb 202400:55:44

In our premiere of Season 6, we welcome Van Everette from The Scenario Radio Show review Kanye West's debut classic album The College Dropout as it turns 20. After serving in the background as a producer for many of Roc-A-Fella Records best albums through the early 2000s, the Chicago-based producer took his turn as a feature act. The album was recorded over a four year period from 1999 to 2003 and is constructed during the period of many memorable moments of his life, including his near-catastrophe car accident.

For his debut effort, West produced the entire album himself and also enlisted the likes of many talented artists and musicians: Jay-Z, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Luda, Freeway, Consequence, GLC, Syleena Johnson, John Legend, Miri Ben-Ari, J. Ivy and the Boys Choir of Harlem. Mixing his unique production style that was dubbed "chipmunk soul", he impressed with his depth, wittiness and more than capable rhymes and flow as he talked the rap game, life, expectations, insecurities, injustices and more.

The album was backed by many notable singles including the debut "Through The Wire", the R&B collabo "All Falls Down" featuring Syleena Johnson, the moving "Jesus Walks" and his first #1 Billboard single "Slow Jamz" featuring Jamie Foxx and Twista. The album was certified 4x platinum and is noted as both the launching West's legendary recording career and also a iconic album of a new movement in the new millenium.

Makaveli (2Pac): The Don Killuminati-The 7 Day Theory (1996). Rap's Revolutionary Lives On In Death08 Nov 202100:35:34

B. Cox & J. Owe look back at the late Tupac Shakur's (recording under the alias Makaveli) fifth studio album and his first posthumous album The Don Killuminati-The 7 Day Theory. Released on Death Row Records not even two months after his fatal shooting in Las Vegas which shook up the entertainment industy, the album featured little features other than the Outlawz and R&B singers Danny Boy, Aaron Hall and K-Ci and Jo-Jo of Jodeci. It also featureed a less heralded group of producers from Death Row (Hurt-M-Badd, Quincy Jones III, Big D & Reggie Moore) who were tasked to keep up with the rapper's legendary work ethic and pace. The album was reportedly finished recording in only 7 days during the first week in August of 1996. Adding to the mystique and dark clouds over his death, Tupac delivers his usual hard-cutting and, at times, thought provoking lyrics as his final message to the world before departing. The album would sell over 600K albums in its first work, debut #1 on the charts and would go on to be certified quadruple platinum.

Ice Cube: Death Certificate (1991). "Death is The Mirror...Life is The Direction"01 Nov 202100:38:25

B. Cox & J. Owe review Ice Cube's classic, but controversial second album Death Certificate. After splitting with NWA and dropping his highly acclaimed debut AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Cube followed up with a busy 1991 starting his label, kicking off the careers of fellow West Coast emcees Yo-Yo and Del The Funky Homosapien as well as making his acting debut in the cult classic film Boyz In the Hood.

He released his sophomore album with new production help from producers Sir Jinx and Boogiemen. Over 20 tracks, he continues his tales on life in the hood and the ills of the ghetto and poor black America, but also detail tough social commentary and the injustices of the day which still mirror an imperfect America in the present It's an album that is still highly regarded and is on the shortlist of many for the best 10-20 hip-hop albums of all-time.

Ghostface Killah: Ironman (1996). The Wu's Fortress Is Fortified By Iron25 Oct 202100:38:17

The crew take a look back at Wu Tang Clan crew member Ghostface Killah's debut classic album Ironman. After a four year run of excellence that started with the group's groundshifting debut Enter the 36 Chambers followed up by acclaimed solo releases by various group members, the release by the proclaimed Pretty Tone aka Tony Starks was the final solo release from a group member before the groups second album, Forever, in 1997.

Backed my soulful, but at times gritty beats, Ghostface showcases his witty yet entertaining flow packed equally with a stream of consciousness vibe and acerbic lyrical darts. He was also joined by his fellow Wu-Tang brethren, most notably by Raekwon, who would feature prominently on Ironman as Ghostface did on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. It would go on to debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 and go platinum, serving as Ghostface's best selling album to date.

A Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory (1991). Bass Is The Weapon...27 Sep 202100:39:58

B. Cox reviews A Tribe Called Quest's seismic second album The Low End Theory as it turns 30. Fresh of their successful debut People's Instinctive Travels And Their Paths of Rhythm, the quartet-turned-trio from Queens sought to make a deeper impact on their sophomore album. Buoyed by the presence of inventive jazz samples, stirring and sense tingling basslines, and the emergence of emcee and group member Phife Dawg, the album laid the groundwork of what many thought was possible with the fusion of jazz and hip-hop inspiring a key segment of the next generation of hip-hop artists, beatmakers and producers. Lauded and critically acclaimed upon its release, it has maintained its reputation being universally accepted as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.

The Roots: Illadelph Halflife (1996). "Breaking Emcess Down to Fractions..."20 Sep 202100:29:53

B. Cox reviews The Roots' third studio album, 1996's Illadelph Halflife. After a respectable success and notoriety from their sophomore offering Do You Want More?!!!???!, the hip-hop band and outfit from Philadelphia found themselves moving a little bit away from their live instrumentation 100 percent output and experimented with samples and drum programming. The sound of a more traditional hip-hop album helped to popularize the group with an hardcore hip-hop audience and the emergence of Black Thought and Malik B as A Level emcees let the industry know that the "jazz guys" could stick with anyone in the game. They were assisted by a wide variety of guests; from rappers Common, Q-Tip and Bahamadia and frequent collaborator Dice Raw as well as singers such as Raphael Saadiq, D'Angelo, Cassandra Wilson and instrumentalists like jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman and former Roots crew member Scott Storch.

Jay-Z: The Blueprint (2001). A Day of Infamy, An Album Like No Other.13 Sep 202100:35:32

The crew discusses Jay-Z's sixth studio album, 2001's The Blueprint. The album was released ironically on the same day of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S., leaving it overshadowed by tragedy. After the smoke cleared (literally and figuratively), the album emerged as one of the most revered and acclaimed projects to drop in the new millennium, catapulting the Roc-A-Fella CEO and emcee into a another galaxy of success and carrying on the momentum from the end of the 90s. Backed the production prowess of the likes of Just Blaze, Kanye West, Timbaland, Bink and Eminem, Jay-Z's braggadocios and confident persona shone through with razor sharp lyrics and an impeccable flow. It combined street sensibilities with commercial appeal and also started his infamous feud with fellow rap icon Nas in a battle that would define the next half decade.

Since it's release, it has continuously been hailed among the best music releases o the new millennium and is consistently mentioned with Jay-Z best releases in his illustrious career.

B. Cox welcomes 12Kyle of The 12Kyle Podcast to review OutKast's sophomore hit album ATLiens. After shaking up and introducing themselves on the hip-hop scene with their classic debut album Southernplayaisticadillacmuzik, Dre and Big Boi sought to make a project that would solidify their position as major players in the hip-hop scene nationally and internationally. Spurned once again by production from Organized Noize and also their debut into self-production, the duo spun tales of growth, cautionary stories, life in a changing Atlanta landscape and their desire to reach the top with lyrics and a flow that had advanced past the ambitious offering of their debut.

Cypress Hill: Cypress Hill (1991). Street Life Goes "Up In Smoke"16 Aug 202100:33:33

B. Cox & J. Owe review West Coast and Hispanic iconic group Cypress Hill's self-titled debut album Cypress Hill. After undergoing a couple iterations with group members, the trio of B. Real, Sen Dog and DJ Muggs brought their debut album onto the seed over snapped and hard production over rhymes filled with references of life in the streets on the West Coast, dark humor and most of all, weed. B. Cox once again welcomes Nathan "The Professor" Rideaux of Food Dope Podcast to review UGK's third album, the southern classic Ridin' Dirty. After feeling neglected, underutilized and underfunded by their record label Jive, the Texas duo went to work to lay their classic album to prove them and the industry wrong. Over soulful, funky and bass heavy production by Pimp C and N.O. Joe, they sought to bring the industry to a slice of life in their corner of the world in Texas; life riddled with hard times, drug problems and war, murder and struggling to get by. The reality in their raps backed by the superb production gave Bun B and Pimp C their best selling album to date.

A Tribe Called Quest: Beats, Rhymes & Life (1996). Something You Can't Quite Put Your Finger On...02 Aug 202100:33:55

B. Cox reviews A Tribe Called Quest's fourth studio album Beats, Rhymes & Life. It was Tribe's first album since their classic third album Midnight Marauders and a three year gap between projects. In their return, the group grabbed their first No. 1 album on the charts which went platinum. While promising at first, the album suffered from a noticeable lack of cohesion and disjointedness. While the album's production (handled by the new production trio the Ummah) and lyrical content was a bright spot, there were key additions and omissions that prevented it from being a standout like the groups previous two efforts.

Main Source: Breaking Atoms (1991). "All of The Pieces Fit..."26 Jul 202100:28:38

B. Cox reviews Main Source's classic debut album 1991's Breaking Atoms. It was a wildly creative and sonically pleasing debut combining the exploits of twin brother DJs K-Cut and Sir Scratch along with emcee and soon to be legendary producer Large Professor. Behind funky and soulful sample based beats teamed up with Large Professor's prolific rhymes, the album tackled issues such failed relationships, emcee double crossing, police brutality, violence in the community and even featured the now-fabled debut of an unknown MC named Nas on a track that would be become more popular than the album itself. Initially rated a 4.5 Mic album by The Source upon release, the critically acclaimed album was re-rated as a 5 Mic Classic and named as one of the Best 100 Albums by the publication upon later editions.

Bilal: 1st Born Second (2001). A Soulquarian Experience19 Jul 202100:31:09

B. Cox & Domo review Philly neo soul singer and Soulquarian member Bilal and his debut studio album 1st Born Second. After spending the latter part of the previous decade collaborating with various artists and linking up with his soon-to-be Soulqaurian counterparts, his debut album was a sprawling journey of funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop, an ambitious overtaking only matched by his unique and versatile voice. Over production from the likes of Megahertz, Aaron Comess, Dr. Dre, Dre & Vidal, Rapheal Saadiq and the late J. Dilla, Bilal spends 75 minutes taking us on an experience while exceptional in every aspect, was largely forgotten by a public whose attention was hard to keep

De La Soul: Stakes Is High (1996). "You Know The End of this Movie..." (featuring 12Kyle of the 12 Kyle Podcast)12 Jul 202100:59:29

B. Cox welcomes special guest 12Kyle of the 12Kyle Podcast to review De La Soul's seemingly prophetic fourth album Stakes Is High. It was their first album without the production prowess of Prince Paul, who helmed their first three projects.

Faced both with the uncertainty of their recording career after a lukewarm public perception to their third album, Buhloone Mindstate, and with ever changing environment of hip-hop towards a more obscene, vulgar and commercial sound, the group charged through an effort marked by striking back for the sake of hip-hop and sought to warn an industry and culture of the destructive path that it was headed towards.

Nas: It Was Written (1996). The "Golden Child" Strikes Gold05 Jul 202100:35:20

B. Cox & J. Owe review Nas' second studio album It Was Written. It was his highly anticipated follow to his classic debut Illmatic. Upon release, the reviews were mostly mixed as most noticed the album had a more commercial feel and mixed with Mafioso and mob themes, and produced largely by the Trackmasters, which were seen by some as a departure from his debut. Despite some criticism, it became his best selling-album buoyed by a incredibly successful single with "If I Ruled The World" featuring Lauryn Hill.

Since then, the perception of the album has improved, with praise for Nas' improved lyricism and ability to tell stories with vivid imagery. A few emcees actually cite this work as their favorite Nas album over Illmatic.

Jay-Z: Reasonable Doubt (1996). The First Diamond in "The Dynasty"28 Jun 202100:43:32

B. Cox and J. Owe discuss Jay-Z's now-classic debut Reasonable Doubt as it turns 25. The album released on his, Dame Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke label Roc-A-Fella Records, was the first building block on what would become a dynasty in the hip-hop industry. While initially hailed as a solid to dope project upon its release, the project's acclaim only grew as his standing as one of the greatest emcees was confirmed through increased critical and commercial success in the new millenium. As Jay-Z's profile grew, so did the profile of his debut, which in the 25 years since its release, is now considered ahead of it time and among the greatest hip-hop albums of all-time.

Heltah Skeltah: Nocturnal (1996). A Rap Duo By No Other Name.21 Jun 202100:27:35

B. Cox & J. Owe look back at Heltah Skeltah's debut album Nocturnal. It was the first offering by Rock and Ruck (bka the late Sean Price) and the 3rd album released by the hip-hop collective Boot Camp Clik (BCC). Following the success and acclaim of Enta Tha Stage and Dah Shinin by their labelmates, the duo cranked out a project narrated by rugged, yet skilled rhymes over dark and haunting production by the Beatminerz, Buckshot, Lord Jamar, Shawn J Period, E-Swift and others. While not commercially acclaimed, the album became an underground and cult classic.

DMX: Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1998). The Era of X18 Dec 202300:26:21

B. Cox and J Owe look back at the late DMX's second studio album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood as it turns 25. After setting the industry on fire during the previous year and a half and the explosive success of his debut It's Dark and Hell Is Hot earlier in the year, the Yonkers emcee was taking full advantage of his star while on fire. Less than seven months from his debut's release and about a six weeks from the release of his acting debut in the hood drama Belly, he released his sophomore album before the end of year.

In a slight change from It's Dark, he employed more production from Swiss Beatz, whose production made up the majority of the album. While a few songs took a more commercial approach than those in the debut, the rest of the album lined up with what his persona and style came to embody. His lyrics were candid, personal, raw and unapologetic and his theme was a bit more spiritual as well. He collaborated with the likes of fellow Yonkers and Ruff Ryders affliates the LOX, Drag-On, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z and even rock star Marilyn Manson.

The album featured his signature song "Slippin" and also "No Love 4 Me". The album debuted as #1 on the Billboard 200 and also was certified triple platinum. He became the 2nd artists to have two albums released in the same year debut as #1, the other being the late Tupac Shakur in 1996.

B. Cox and Domo look back at Toni Braxton's mega hit second album Secrets. Coming off her massively successful self-titled debut album released three years prior containing several charting singles, she avoided the dreaded sophomore slump by putting forth a phenomenal effort that was once again produced by Babyface. Featuring a all-star cast of musicians', engineers and background vocalist, she rode the wave of two No. 1 Billboard 100 hits to her best selling album with 15 million records sold worldwide. B. Cox looks back at NWA's 2nd and final album Niggaz4Life (stylized as Efil4Zaggin). Dubbed "The World's Most Dangerous Group" after their classic debut, the outfit entered their last LP minus their most prolific emcee Ice Cube and was poised to show the hip-hop world that they could do it without him. Led by the prolific pen and sinister rhymes of MC Ren, focused and hard hitting production by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella and the ever witty Eazy E, their 2nd effort stepped up the intensity in terms of raw and vulgar lyrics as well as their customary tales of street life in Southern California.

Jodeci-Forever My Lady (1991): "It's A New Day..."24 May 202100:35:03

The crew reviews Jodeci's smash debut album Forever My Lady as it turns 30. The group was quintessential to shaping a standard for male R&B groups in 1990s with their distinctive melodies, sharp production and street style not seen by R&B acts at the time. Their style harkened more towards hip-hop as they became the standard bearers for R&B of that period and became a model that many groups sought to duplicate though the 1990s and beyond.

The album was once again produced by the group and Prince Paul that utilized inventive samples and unique wordplay with creativity and storytelling.

In a special bonus episode, the crew takes time out to memorialize a fallen legend. Earl Simmons bka DMX, who passed away at the age of 50 after being in a vegetative state after a heart attack. He was a transcendent emcee and artist that ushered hip-hop back into the streets who became the first artist in history to have his first five albums all reach No.1 on the Billboard 200.

He would later craft a countless number of hits for the club and the streets with a unique personality and live performances not seen before in hip-hop. He also starred in a number of movies and became a pop culture icon. He was a rarity in an age where authenticity was small supply, revealing his flaws, demons and vulnerability to his fans and the world. The crew remembers his career and legacy of not just the emcee, but the man.

B. Cox and Domo review Maxwell's groundbreaking and culture-shifting debut album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. It was an album that signaled a paradigm shift from R&B music of the day that featured a more hip-hop sound back to a traditional feel that combined soul, jazz and funk in a way that changed the game. Jay-Z: The Black Album (2003). "On that note, I'm leavin' after this song"27 Nov 202300:28:36

B. Cox reminisces about Jay-Z's eight album The Black Album as it turns 20. Heading into this album, it was being touted as Jay-Z last album as he was to "retire" to take up the mantle of president of Def Jam Records after the album was released. The news and fallout from it lead to a acrimonious split of the three founders and owners of Roc-A-Fella Records: Jay, Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. The news of Jay-Z's impending retirement while he was still on top of his game in every aspect, raised the profile of this album to another level.

Teaming up with an all-star cast of producers, it was an epic album to say goodbye: mainstays Just Blaze, Kanye West, the Neptunes, Timbaland were on board to produce songs along with newcomers 9th Wonder and the Buchanans along with industry veterans DJ Quik and Rick Rubin. Focusing on his last album, Jay-Z toed the line of lyrically exclaiming his career in review as proud veteran while simultaneously giving us his trademark varied flow and style to show he could still make a hit and be hungry. Noted in the album is a more mature and at peace vibe from Jay-Z as he celebrated and reflected.

The album was boosted by three singles: "Change Clothes" feat. Pharrell Williams, "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "99 Problems". The anticipation and acclaimed pushed the album to triple platinum certification. It is noted along with 1996's Reasonable Doubt and 2001's The Blueprint with being Jay-Z's classic albums. The album was also supported by a documentary feature film Fade To Black, which chronicled Jay-Z's "farewell" concert at Madison Square Garden in 2004.

Snoop Doggy Dogg: Doggystyle (1993). It's More Than Hype...20 Nov 202300:36:26

B. Cox and J. Owe look back at at the momentous occasion of Snoop Doggy Dogg's classic debut album Doggystyle as it turns 30. Fresh off the heels of his breakthrough performance on several tracks on Dr. Dre's The Chronic released not even a year prior, he set to set the game on fire with what was, to that point, the most highly anticipated debut for a new hip-hop artist. Working hard with Dr. Dre and a handful of fellow Death Row Records collaborators such Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage, the DOC, RBX, Warren G and Nate Dogg, the young Long Beach emcee was looking to top all expectations bestowed upon him.

In spades, he delivered. Along a three hugely successful singles in "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)", "Gin and Juice" and "Doggy Dogg World", Snoop dropped 54 minutes of G-Funk laced fire with his trademark, lazy, yet casual and sharp flow and lyrics that served as the backdrop to a growing hip-hop and pop culture phenomenon. His infectious hooks, what would be become classic and quotable bars, the outlandish and even vulgar skits and humor all made the album a a part of popular culture and lexicon and still lingers to this day. It all played a part of a dominant two-to-three years of Snoop being recognized as the hottest rapper in the game and one of the biggest stars in music.

The debut numbers were unprecedented. It sold over 800K its first week and by the end of the year, it was approaching 2 million records sold. As of today, it stands as 7x RIAA platinum certified. It is widely known today as such: 1) The biggest and most anticipated debut album of any hip-hop album that exceeded such hype 2) One of the most influential albums of any genre released in the last 30 years and 3) Universally accepted as a classic, a West Coast living landmark and legacy that defined 90s West Coast hip-hop and the success of Death Row Records at its peak.
