Today, let's explore the difference between traditional yoga and somatic yoga. While traditional yoga focuses on alignment, somatic yoga allows you to process and deeply feel your emotions. I will never tell you not to do a traditional yoga class, There is an incredible amount of value there and I have so much love for yogic tradition. But, I would like to encourage you to bring more somatic movement into your practice. Let's discuss: 🔹Traditional yoga's focus on alignment, strength, and breath control, while somatic yoga emphasizes embodiment, emotional processing, and non-habitual movement. 🔹Five common yoga poses that can be made more somatic: sufi grind, spinal flex, cat-cow, downward dog, and janu sirsasana. 🔹How somatic yoga allows individuals to deepen their connection with their bodies and process difficult emotions.

Living with chronic pain can be a nightmare. Teaching a yoga student with chronic pain can feel intimidating. Today, I'm joined by Uplifted 200-Hour and 300-Hour graduate, Kim Patel, to unpack how chronic pain is different from acute pain, and how to work with chronic pain in a yoga context. This fascinating conversation leads us into an in-depth conversation about the brain, the nervous system, phantom limb syndrome, as well as stories from my own life as the daughter of a war veteran with chronic pain. Kim was working as a nurse when she developed a long-term pain condition related to her pregnancy which first sparked her interest in pain management. Kim offers one-to-one bespoke pain management blending her nursing knowledge and pain management qualifications with counseling, mindfulness, meditation and movement including yoga. She's now in the final stages of her doctorate looking at chronic pain and self-concept related to acceptance. This is a must-listen for any yoga teacher looking to support students with injury, illness or pain.

Emotional processing is essential for humans, but our society doesn't value or provide time for it. This is why when you finally have some space, like on a vacation perhaps, you may get hit with a trauma response seemingly out of nowhere. Just like it did for me on my recent trip to Paris. I'm not just talking about the ones we all know, fight, flight, and freeze. There are three more "F"s that belong to that system! Today I want to share with you the DENT(Dynamic Experiential Narrative Theory) model of trauma. Let's discuss: 🔹Your body's different responses to trauma, stress, and anxiety, including flight, fight, freeze, fawn, flood, and fatigue. 🔹How somatic or embodied yoga practices can be helpful for emotional processing and regulation. 🔹Why listening to your body and practicing self-care is crucial for maintaining balance and well-being.
