This book is set in England in the 60s when young women are working in the cities and living on their own. However, apartments are expensive and two friends might try to rent a room by advertising in the paper for a Third Girl.

It is New Years Eve and a house party is taking place somewhere in England. A group of friends are discussing the suicide of the man who previously lived in the house they are currently in. Suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Mr Quin has arrived!
