EA listens to fans, there will be no new F1 video game in 202629 Dec 202500:15:29

There will not be an official Formula 1 game in 2026. Confirmed.

Instead, there will be an F1 26 DLC pack for EA SPORTS F1 25 - including the new cars, liveries and presumably, the Madrid circuit. During a year of significant change for the sport, the official video game will also go through some drastic steps.

Then, the sim racing series will return in 2027, but in a “reimagined” form.

John Munro and Thomas Harrison-Lord react to the news and provide their predictions

Why Assetto Corsa Competizione is so popular | S02E0421 Jun 202100:30:17

It’s been a long journey, from Early Access back in 2018, to PS4 and Xbox One versions in 2020 and finally – for now – the British GT DLC in 2021, but Assetto Corsa Competizione seems to be in the form of its life right now.

With extraordinarily active player counts, and next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X version slated for later in the year, this latest episode of The Traxion Podcast explores why such a serious game that only includes one slightly obscure racing series has become such a smash it for developer KUNOS-Simulazioni and publisher 505 Games.

If you’re already playing it extensively, we discuss the highs and lows and if you have not yet tried it, then let us regale you with tales of why it is so good.

Hosted by John Munro, with guest Thomas Harrison-Lord.

Racing games that have aged like a fine wine | S02E0314 Jun 202100:41:19

We’re back with a brand new episode of the Traxion.GG podcast, and this week we discuss games that have aged like a fine wine.

Dodgy episode title aside, this is pertinent, as we live in an age where games are updated, refined, patched and added to post-launch, which means that the original Metacritic becomes less and less relevant.

‘Games as a service’ is a term that exists. Some simulators work on a subscription basis. Games have a second life beyond the initial release.

So, here are just some games that we think fit the bill as something that has got better with age. Like Ryan Gosling or Sienna Miller, but in video game form.

Be sure to let us know some games that you think have got better the older they become and we may revisit this topic in a future episode.

Hosted by Justin Sutton, with guest Thomas Harrison-Lord.

Game development and winning rallies with Jon Armstrong | S02E0107 Jun 202100:44:39

Jon Armstrong is a busy person. Alongside competing in the 2021 Junior World Rally Championship alongside co-driver Phil Hall for the Codemasters DiRT Rally Team, he’s also a game designer at Codemasters during the week.

For those who perhaps aren’t aware, Jon starting rallying and working is way up the championships, competing in Ireland, the British Rally Championship, the Junior European Rally Championship, and then onto the Drive DMACK Cup and the WRC 2 competition.

But then, faced with the difficulty of raising the budget required to compete at the very top of rallying, he turned to esports, winning the 2018 (and finishing second in 2019) WRC esports competition. This then led to working on the later stages of DiRT Rally 2.0 development, a full-time role at the company and now the opportunity to compete on the world stage once again.

The season is going well too, winning the first JWRC round on the Croatia Rally. With all of that in mind, we talked to Jon on this latest podcast episode, discussing his early career, sim rallying and his curent JWRC season so far.

Episode 12: Sim vs Arcade10 May 202100:56:35

We all love a great arcade racing game, right? Using power-ups, bashing off walls, drifting to victory. Or, do we?

Are we all enabling our best race face, complaining about track limits and tweaking our bump stop rates instead?

What about those games that fit in between the two?

Or, how about this for a revolutionary idea… you can enjoy all three types of games? This is what we propose in the latest episode of the Traxion podcast, alongside charting the rise of the simulator and the origin of the aforementioned terms.

Let us know in the comments below if you are a sim racer that also enjoys Mario Kart, or you play touch-based drag racing games on your phone and are also handy on rFactor 2.

Episode 11: What we would do as EA CEO26 Apr 202100:52:22

Andrew Wilson has a lot on his plate. There are the yearly Madden NFL, FIFA and NBA sports titles, the ever-popular free-to-play battle royale title Apex Legends, upcoming Mass Effect remasters, the EA Play subscription and the recent $1.2 billion purchase of British racing game studio, Codemasters.

Home to GRID, DIRT, Micro Machines, Formula 1 and Slightly Mad Studios, there is now a long list of racing game and sim franchises that are under EA’s umbrella.

So, in the latest episode of the Traxion.GG Podcast, we play fantasy CEO. If we were Andrew Wilson, what would we do with the Codemasters and current EA racing games? Will we bring back old classics, or push onwards with fresh titles?

Our team considers the possibilities, but we’d like to hear from you too. What would you like to see from EA and Codemasters? Let us know in the comments below.

"I've done everything I can to chase my dream" - Jardier interview10 Nov 202400:47:19

Jaroslav Honzik, aka Jardier, entered some races in the Czech Republic 18 years ago. But, his motorsport dream ended there, until earlier this year, when he put his (and sponsor's) money where his mouth is and went for his dream - a season of touring car racing.

Competing the Clio Cup, Jardier still adores Assetto Corsa, in particular Assetto Corsa Competizione. Naturally, we also discuss what the future may hold for ACC, but also hopes and dreams for Assetto Corsa EVO.

All this, and more, in the latest episode of the Traxion Podcast, plus we answer your questions.

The Voice of World RX: Andrew Coley Interview 21 Apr 202100:31:33

How does a former graphic designer get to travel the world and talk about motorsport for a living?

Well, to answer that question we sat down for a chat with the only ex-designer-come-commentator that was free the other week – Andrew Coley.

The only person to commentate on every World Rallycross event held to date and part of the Extreme E team for the inaugural season, he oozes motorsport. His ‘mega’ style of describing what is happening for viewers is completely unique – you're on the edge of your seat even if there’s not much happening in the race.

We sat down with the enigmatic rallycross nutter to discuss his career, the current state of WorldRX, the future of rallying and how it all fits into the virtual world and esports. What camera angles does he use and how is life adapting from controller to a steering wheel? Watch to find out.

It’s a Monday and that means time for another episode of The Traxion podcast!

We hope you enjoyed our bonus episode last Thursday which saw Tom and Justin react to the F1 2021 launch. So for this week’s regular podcast episode, number nine in this season, it’s Tom and John. They discuss the differences between a ‘remaster’ and a ‘remake’ and how the lines are more blurred than ever.

Then they go through which racing video games they’d each like to be remade or remastered and get confused in the process. But that’s not all, if you’ve listened to this episode please let us know in our brand new comments section on the Traxion website which games you’d like to see get the 4K treatment. F1 2021 Trailer - Reaction and Deep Dive Analysis15 Apr 202100:41:53

F1 2021, this season’s official Formula 1 game, has been revealed by EA and Codemasters and there is plenty to talk about – not least of which the title releasing on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC.

The lead feature seems to be Braking Point, a brand-new story mode featuring the return of Devon Butler who first appeared in F1 2019. That game was the first attempt by the F1 games to introduce a story, and while it was fun, it was over in a flash.

Tellingly, the trailer focuses purely on this element of the game. No gameplay or in-game screens have been revealed at this point, and the video is a snazzy CGI affair that hints at intense rivalries which will be against fictional racers Devon Butler, Aiden Jackson, and Casper Akkerman.

Last season’s game introduced the superb My Team mode where you could create your own team and rise through the ranks. There’s very little information in the way of any improvements to that for 2021, although its return is confirmed.

What is new, however, is a two-player career. Assuming this is online, you and a friend can play this either co-operatively or competitively. To us, that indicates being able to race through a career, but perhaps not My Team, on either the same or opposing teams.

The Algarve, Imola and Jeddah circuits are to be included, but as a free update post-launch. Speaking of free, there will be a free next-gen upgrade for those who purchase on either PS4 or Xbox One, further details on any exclusions are to follow.

Last of the ‘big ticket’ items is the ‘Real-Season Start’ which allows players to jump into a season that reflects the current live standings of the real-world F1 year. How that works if some of the tracks are being added later though, remains to be seen.

There are plenty of other smaller details, though, which you may see on the pre-order landing pages.

Alongside the standard edition, a Deluxe Edition will be available which provides three days early access and a suite of cosmetic bonuses. Of which victory radio calls are included and seven iconic drivers to “enhance you’re my Team game experience”. Both are very intriguing to us, and we hope to find out how these work closer to the release date.

Likewise, assist options, driver stats and multiplayer are said to be “refined”, but little is known about exactly how at this date. Split-screen, shorter seasons and F2 all return from the last game, but again, there’s no confirmation which F1 season is included at launch.

The game launches on all platforms on the 16th July 2021 – unless you order the Deluxe Edition for $15/£15 extra – and stay tuned as we’ll have lots of F1 2021 information and opinions coming very soon.

Episode 8: Over the Horizon? Why a game from 2018 is still number one12 Apr 202100:54:50

Forza Horizon 4, aka the game that keeps on giving. Created by Playground Games, supported by Sumo Digital, as we approach its third year on sale there are still monthly car additions.

On top of that, the game was recently released on Steam and an even larger PC audience can now experience the UK-based open-world racer.

All three of our podcast team have played this game recently, with Justin Sutton being our resident Forza Horizon 4 expert and leading us through why its appeal is so enduring but also, what could be improved in the future.

The future of KartKraft, Zach Griffin interview07 Apr 202100:23:55

KartKraft, a karting simulator currently in Early Access on PC, has been making waves in the sim community of late thanks to its staggering attention to detail and realistic driving physics.

Recently acquired by Motorsport Games, we spoke to the Director of Studio for the newly formed Motorsport Games Australia to learn more about the game's origins story, but also what the future holds.

Quite a lot it turns out. Wet weather, ranked online racing, a new circuit and assists for those new to the genre. Plus, maybe even console versions further down the line.

Listen to this latest Traxion interview to hear what it’s like to be a formerly independent game developer with an idea and how that dream is about to be realised.

Episode 7: Do esports have a place in real-world motorsport?05 Apr 202100:42:22

A controversial topic, spurred on by the GT World Challenge using esports to form part of the Teams’ Championship points within 2021 and with many esports competitions previously offering real-world driving or training, we dive in head-first on the latest Traxion Podcast episode.

Does sim racing open more doors? Is there a genuine crossover between the virtual world and the real one? What skills are transferable, if any? To help navigate us through this potential minefield, our very own John Munro is a sim racer and a real racer – which is handy!

That’s a big dump of headline news for LMU drivers, oh and there’s going to be an in-game livery shop. Join John Munro and Thomas Harrison-Lord as they break down the latest updates, not forgetting that a career mode should arrive in early 2026.

The console porting deal is said to be in the “late state negotiations” with development work set to commence in the “coming weeks”.

It all comes from Motorsport Games and Studio 397 CEO Stephen Hood, who dropped the updates during a positive earnings call where a second successive quarter of profit was recorded for the once floundering outfit.

The importance of My Team, F1 World and anti-cheat – F1 23’s Lee Mather | S7 E1324 Jul 202300:29:18

A Traxion Podcast interview with Senior Creative Director at Electronic Arts, Codemasters, Lee Mather – who’s responsible for the official Formula 1 game’s direction each year.

Mather has worked on the F1 games since 2008, spanning a 15-year stint. We asked him about his time working on the yearly motorsport titles, but also what the thinking was behind the F1 World game mode, if we’ll see more Braking Point in the future and how the new car handling was developed.

We also touch upon the importance of esports and league racing, and the company’s plans to implement anti-cheat measures. Will classic cars ever make a return? Is My Team and Driver Career still important for the franchise? Are we to expect more limited-time liveries?

All of these key questions are answered – but of course, be sure to leave your F1 23 feedback in the comments below!
