| Episode 757: The Courage To Be Together Alone with Dorith Mous | 21 Sep 2023 | 00:43:18 | |
Multiple award-winning, Dutch multi-hyphenate Dorith Mous (1986), was seemingly born into her art, gaining beautiful knowledge of physical form and capturing depth from a subject through her own nomadic experience as a fashion model for two decades. Having moved fluidly from a storied career in front of the lens to one behind it, as a photographer and filmmaker, Dorith elicits an artful finesse of the soul – one in which her subjects both exude and challenge the archetypes of beauty, while provoking ideas, ideals and ideologies. With her successful anti-discriminatory exhibition in New York City, entitled IamYOU, and her ongoing cinematic series Together-Alone, which focuses on destigmatizing mental health, Dorith continues to create awareness by means of harvesting the honesty that permeates through her portraiture of subjects. | Episode 755: Transforming Couples Therapy with David Mars, PhD | 18 Sep 2023 | 00:35:00
As a young therapist, Dr. David Mars went into couples therapy looking for help. Instead, he found that the models offered seemed to make matters worse by unnecessarily drawing out and evoking the vicious cycle of distress. He found that instead of offering help and support, most couples therapy sessions focused on what is wrong in a relationship instead of what is right. This set into motion four decades of dedicating himself to developing a couples treatment model that works in a kind, effective, pleasurable and time-efficient way. This is a republishing of an archived episode with Carl Waggett. There are some people who are able to articulate concepts and feelings in a kind of perfect, let’s-get-to-the-heart-of-the-matter way for a particular group of people, and Carl is that person for the first responder tribe. Carl’s been a full-time firefighter for the past 14 years, and Acting Captain for 4 of them. After a fellow firefighter and close friend of Carl’s ended his own life, Carl removed himself from the front line trucks only to be diagnosed with PTSD a short time afterward. Carl says he’s learning that there are many sides to this very intelligent disorder, and would simply like to share his experiences in the hope that others understand that PTSD is more of a winnable battle than you think. Carl started his podcast, PTSD Bunker Gear For Your Brain, after his experiences with PTSD and to help other first responders. In This Episode: --- What’s new with The Trauma Therapist Project!

| Episode 754: Disembodied Eating with Michelle Cleary | 11 Sep 2023 | 00:39:57 | |
Michelle Cleary (she/her) is a licensed psychotherapist who is trained in EMDR, holds a certificate in Somatic Experiencing™ (SE), assists at SE trainings throughout the year, is a former adjunct professor for SUNY Stony Brook, School of Social Welfare, and maintains a full time private practice that focuses on treating trauma and eating disorders. Why? Why so much learning and work? Well, because after decades of her own life saving, nurturing therapy, Michelle still struggled with strong eating disorder behaviors, regular bouts of depression, mood shifts, anxiety, and overwhelm. These challenging experiences were interspersed during a time when she was also succeeding, building healthy relationships, learning, and creating. Michelle was happier and healthier than ever but was STILL living with a lot of challenging experiences. Michelle is now dedicated to discovering, understanding, and teaching others the way our nervous system and brain-body development contributes to our moods, behaviors, relationships, mental health, and productivity. | Episode 751: Project 2 Heal with Charlie Petrizzo | 24 Aug 2023 | 00:42:40
Charlie was born and raised in Staten Island, New York and as a young adult he moved to Old Bridge and later Millstone, New Jersey. His success in the financial services industry allowed him to rise through the ranks of First Union/Wachovia, ultimately leading him and his wife, Sandy, of 30 years, and their two daughters, Melissa and Kristen, to Charlotte. He assumed the role of the director of sales, marketing and product development for the Wachovia Insurance Group, a legacy Wells Fargo company; he left the company in 2003. His story of surviving two tragic accidents, including the major brain trauma of a car accident and an “electrocution” in which he burned over two thirds of his body, became the focus of the 2012 award winning docu-drama called Charlie’s Scars. The inspiration for the founding of Project 2 Heal came in part from Charlie’s recognition of the care he needed and received from his parents during, and after, his two trials from the accidents, but also from the recognition of how many friends offered to help his family during that time. | The Body Keeps The Score. Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D: from the archives | 23 Aug 2023 | 00:41:04
This is a republishing of an archived episode with Bessel A. van der Kolk. Bessel A. van der Kolk M.D. is a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress. His work integrates developmental, neurobiological, psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment. Dr. van der Kolk and his various collaborators have published extensively on the impact of trauma on development, such as dissociative problems, borderline personality and self-mutilation, cognitive development, memory, and the psychobiology of trauma. He has published over 150 peer reviewed scientific articles on such diverse topics as neuroimaging, self-injury, memory, neurofeedback, Developmental Trauma, yoga, theater and EMDR. He is founder of the Trauma Center in Boston; past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. He regularly teaches at universities and hospitals around the world. His most recent 2014 New York Times Science best seller, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neurofeedback, mindfulness techniques, play, yoga, and other therapies. I remember I first encountered Dr. van der Kolk’s work in graduate school. I came across his article, The Body Keeps The Score, and thought to myself, "Oh my God, this is it. This makes perfect sense. This is what I want to do." I went on to read his other book, Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on Mind, Body, and Society, and was equally inspired by that. Now, of course, his most recent work, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma, has been informing and inspiring not just trauma workers, but individuals who’ve been impacted by trauma, as well. | Capturing The Present Moment with David Carr: from the archives | 09 Aug 2023 | 00:34:22
This is a republishing of an archived episode with Sarah Peyton. "Continuous effort — not strength or intelligence — is the key to unlocking our potential." -Winston Churchill I’m going to let you in on a secret. The Trauma Therapist Podcast isn’t really about trauma. It’s actually a podcast about the human spirit. It’s about the incredible people who’ve experienced trauma and the people who work with those people. This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with David Carr and there is no doubt that David’s story is one of inspiration. Devastation, yes. But resilience, motivation and inspiration, too. David has written an exposé titled, 'We Can Overcome: An American Trauma.' This is riveting, and at times hard to read, and yet also inspiring and empowering. (And I’m not getting paid to say that.) As a boy, David heard the stories of what his father endured as a boy: Fists appearing like unexpected rain, kicks in the side, and nails in his skin. But Carr’s father never set a hand on him. The cycle of abuse, however, was not broken: David suffered mental and physical abuse from the people that were supposed to protect him. As an adult, he realizes that his continuing mental anguish was self-inflicted. In challenging himself to see his life in a new way, David realized that the story of his childhood trauma did not consist of what happened to him, but rather way he responded to what happened. This realization set the stage for him to embark on a transformative journey—one that began as a terrified child—but has since included him as a mixed martial artist, as the vice chairman of The Joyful Child Foundation, and as an advocate for children’s rights nationwide, and he has built two successful international companies. He lives on a Southern California ranch style home with his wife of twenty years and three children. I loved speaking with David. His strength and courage is pretty palpable, and so too is his recognition and acceptance of his own vulnerability. In This Episode

| Episode 749: Getting Back In The Game with Colleen Ryan-Hensley | 07 Aug 2023 | 00:32:55 | |
Colleen Ryan-Hensley is a 10-year Navy Veteran, an advocate for mental health and expert in mental toughness who created the online educational resource BingingSober. Colleen struggled with depression since she was a teenager and instead of expressing her feelings and getting help, she was taught to "rub some dirt on it and get back in the game." To cope with depression, she started drinking and going on long runs to escape the things that hurt. When she joined the Navy, she brought this mental and physical toughness with her. Sure, it was the perfect combo for being a great sailor, but not so great for relationships, health and overall wellbeing. It wasn't until well after her Navy days that she started focusing more on the feelings she kept bottled up and peeling away the decades of toughness she had built up around her. Today, Colleen shows others how to avoid making these costly decisions and live a balanced life where escape and reality can live in harmony. | Meeting Young People Where They’re At with Rob Morris | 29 Jul 2024 | 00:30:44
Rob Morris is the co-founder and CEO of Koko, whose mission is to combat the youth mental health crisis by meeting young people where they’re at—online. Rob's journey with Koko began during his graduate studies at MIT, a period marked by personal struggles with mental health. It was out of this challenging experience that the seeds of Koko were planted. Hailing from the heart of Silicon Valley, Rob's early interests diverged from technology towards a fascination with humanity. This led Rob to delve into psychology during Rob's time at Princeton, a passion that endured even as Rob later developed an interest in computers, design, and technology. Pursuing graduate studies at MIT was a transformative experience, supported by dedicated advisors and inspiring peers who propelled Rob forward despite the challenges. To them, and to all who believed in Rob, Rob is eternally grateful. | Episode 738: We Are All Just Shaky Beings with Jan Winhall, MSW | 29 Jun 2023 | 00:33:22
Jan began her career as a social worker and psychotherapist 40 years ago. She began listening with non-pathologizing ears and heard shocking stories of sexual torture, and responses that confused her. As she continued to listen she learned that somehow these self-harming behaviors were “helping” individuals to escape intolerable emotional states. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa. Because these behaviors were so helpful they were compulsively repeated and often became addictions. Jan’s book Treating Trauma and Addiction with The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model: A Bottom Up Approach is the result of rethinking the Felt Sense Experience Model that she wrote about in her book, Emerging Practice in Focusing- Oriented Psychotherapy, 2014. Jan’s integrated the Polyvagal lens Theory to create a more sophisticated way of understanding emotional regulation, where addictive behavior is an embodied response to emotional dysregulation. | Episode 737: When The Trauma Comes Knocking with Dean Yates | 26 Jun 2023 | 00:38:42
Dean Yates led the Reuters teams that covered the 2002 Bali bombings and the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia’s Aceh province. He was Reuters deputy bureau chief for Israel and Palestine in 2006 – during the Lebanon War – and bureau chief in Iraq – responsible for 100 people – from 2007-2008. It was during this time that a U.S. Apache gunship killed two Reuters journalists in Baghdad on July 12, 2007. Julian Assange published footage of that attack in 2010, shocking millions. Dean's new book, Line in The Sand, is a "raw, gritty account of my seven-year odyssey to find the best ways to treat my PTSD and moral injury and reconnect with my family. I take you inside the Ward 17 psych unit in Melbourne, where I spent 77 days and nights over a two-year period with scores of veterans and first responders. I show how moral injury fits into the broader narrative of PTSD." "My book contains messages for anyone living with trauma and mental illness and their loved ones. I believe my story is a powerful testament to having a strong support network. It might be tough to read. It’s also uplifting. I hope it will inspire and bring about change. What worked for me was approaching my trauma with curiosity. Total honesty with my partner Mary. Never giving up. Understanding the nature of my identity wound, my anger, and seeking meaning from life. I show how employers are brutalizing and abandoning a cohort of workers — veterans, first responders and journalists." In This Episode
