Is This The Best Golf In Scotland? Dumbarnie Links Review
04 Nov 2025
00:48:27
A wee dram on the first tee, sea air in your lungs, and a fairway that seems to help your ball find grass instead of trouble—some days hint they’ll be special before you’ve swung a club. Our 50th milestone took us to Dumbarnie Golf Links, where hospitality and modern links design come together in a way that made us ask, out loud: is this the best golf experience in Scotland?
We break down the course, the clubhouse, and the value.
• how the arrival, bag drop, and clubhouse music set a relaxed tone • why the first tee view and service calm nerves • the whisky tradition and the limited-edition course bottle • design that gathers shots and creates birdie chances • split fairways and three drivable par fours explained • the eighth and ninth stretch and a standout halfway house • tee selection advice for different handicaps • Dumbarnie vs St Andrews logistics and feel • course build: 600 man-made dunes from on-site material • wind, scoring set-up, and pace considerations • value at £336 and who will love this round

Surviving Golf's Toughest Test - Carnoustie Preview
28 Oct 2025
00:42:23
Carnoustie doesn’t host championships so much as it interrogates you. We tee up our most anticipated round yet with a blend of lore, strategy, and honesty about what it takes to survive the toughest mile in golf. From Hogan’s Alley to the Barry Burn, we map the decisions that separate a tidy bogey from a card-wrecker, and we share the member insights that reveal where the real trouble hides.
*****
our gracious hosts Paul & Barry are attempting to play all of the golf courses in Scotland for charity - if any cause is dear to your heart as both of these causes were close to Nish's heart - you can donate here -
Three hosts set the stakes for Carnoustie, mixing humour with hard truths about a course that demands precision, patience and humility. We revisit the legends and the scars, share local insight, and explain how a net-score mindset can turn survival into satisfaction.
• Carnoustie preview and why survival matters • Van de Velde’s collapse unpacked and lessons drawn • Hogan’s Alley, Barry Burn and the ruthless closing stretch • Wind patterns, fair setup and member tips • Bunkers as true penalties and strategy over power • Architecture lineage from Old Tom Morris to Braid • No range, simulator warm-up and mental preparation • Handicap strategy, net score framing and Stableford • Side bet on par threes and signature 18th focus • Clubhouse, town lore and what makes the experience special
Please can I ask you just to hit subscribe on YouTube or wherever you're listening to this podcast so we can get a little bit of extra clout with the clubs
Our 2nd course in our Scottish triple header was Trump International Aberdeen, which is and has been, a divisive course for many reasons. We wanted to give this course a fair chance and see what we thought of it.
It's been a round that has been on, then off, then on again, so the excitement was already palpable at being able to play.
So we made sure we recorded our preview in the early hours on our drive over to the course.
In this preview, we cover;
- How the round came about
- Discussions of the course only as it's so new
- What has piqued our interest from looking up the course online
- Addressing how much this course, and the other 2 Trump courses, have triggered the most questions
- Our signature hole challenge and side bet
Be sure to have catch up with the review when we do it.
Part One of our Scottish triple header was Gullane No 1 at Gullane Golf Club, in East Lothian, Scotland.
This parcel of golfing land is home to no fewer than 5 top 100 golf courses, and in the wider region, more than 10.
Golf has been played at Gullane in some form since 1650, so this really is the cradle of golf. We're going back to the beginning of this great game of golf.
In this preview, we cover;
- How to say Gullane properly - The incredible course and club history - What we're looking forward to at the course - A special welcome we're set to receive from Dylan, one of the managers at the club - Our signature hole challenge and side bet
Be sure to catch up with the review when we do it.
We're also going up for an award at the British Podcast Awards, the People's Choice Award - we'd be grateful for a nomination, which you can do here https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/voting
The Most Under-Ranked In The UK? Hindhead Golf Club Review
12 Aug 2025
01:12:19
Is this the MOST under-ranked golf course in the UK? We review Hindhead Golf Club, which we played as part of a Surrey double-header, where we were invited to play by friend of the Pod, Andrew, and his buddy Tony.
In our preview, we waxed lyrical about the front 9 and how spectacular it looked. Did it live up to our expectations?
We also got a great welcome to the club by everyone there, which added to the overall impression of the members, and the club, and the Club President, Mr Jack Buchanan joined us for a chat about Hindhead Golf Club and his numerous roles.
What a great ambassador he is for the club, we hope yo enjoy this extra special episode
We're also going up for an award at the British Podcast Awards, the People's Choice Award - we've be grateful for a nomination - which you can do here
Billed as a "unique and unforgettable experience", Cruden Bay Golf Club is a very interesting course that we are really looking forward to playing.
It's part of a Scottish trip we're making up to the Aberdeenshire coast, and this is the 3rd Scottish golf course we are playing. It feels like its a proper Scottish golf test, with a dramatic cliffy backdrop with views over Cruden Bay.
We're expecting a complete visual feast, and the course is described as the 2nd most fun in Scotland!
We review our first ever open competition at West Lancs Golf Club.
Learn about our thoughts on the golf course, as well as the lovely welcome we received from the members and staff.
We also took the time to chat about Scottie Scheffler winning The Open at Royal Portrush.
We're also going up for an award, and are looking for your nominations for the People's Choice Award at the British Podcast Awards - you can vote for us here - if you feel inclined
Part 2 of our Surrey double-header is Hankley Common Golf Club. Andrew, who messaged us about playing at Hindhead, has arranged this with a friend of his who is a member at Hankley Common. We can't wait to play here.
The course looks like a proper grown-up test of golf. But what else are we looking forward to? Find out in this preview episode.
We're also going up for an award, and are looking for your nominations for the People's Choice Award at the British Podcast Awards - you can vote for us here - if you feel inclined
We've been invited to play at the glorious Hindhead Golf Club by Andrew, who is a member there. He is a fellow Top 100-er and listened to our episode after playing Aberdovey, which compelled him to reach out and extend the invitation.
In our preview, we discover why this golf club is one we're really looking forward to, in particular, a spectacular looking front 9 holes that look like a roller coaster.
We're also going up for an award, and are looking for your nominations for the People's Choice Award at the British Podcast Awards - you can vote for us here - if you feel inclined

We're joined by Lee from Harbs7Golf, who's a big friend of the podcast, and he loves putting money on sport. He's here to combine his knowledge of betting and his love of golf to give you a bit of an idea as to where the smart money is for anyone looking to bet on this year's Open.
The Open betting tips and predictions in the episode are designed to give you good value, with an eye for an outside bet.
We dive into the highs and lows of the fifth annual Nish Invitational golf tournament held at Worsley Park Golf Club, where twelve players battled Singapore-like heat, competitive tension, and occasional controversy.
• Custom welcome packs including personalised Titleist Pro V1 balls, tees, ball markers, and divot tools set the tone for a special day • Extreme heat forced even the most traditional golfers to break their own rules and wear shorts • Worsley Park proves the perfect venue with its playable course, practice facilities, and communal spaces • Nearest to pin competition created drama when one player celebrated too early only to be beaten by mere inches • The competition format using Squabbit tracking included a hidden leaderboard after hole 15 for added suspense • Paul's controversial practice round the week before became a running joke throughout the day • Debates over gimme putts showed the friendly but competitive nature of the group • Players universally enjoyed the experience despite varied performances on the course
We're already planning next year's event which promises to be even bigger with more participants and potentially some format adjustments. Join us at West Lancs where the trophy will hopefully be returned to its rightful owner!
People in the know and in and around golf their entire lives know about the reputation and allure of Ganton, but as it's not an Open rota course or host of major tournaments, Nish had never heard of it.
We found out what was so special about this great, historic golf course and club.

We're playing in our FIRST EVER Open competition at the famous, but unheralded, West Lancs Golf Club
Invited along by friends of the Podcast, Paul (Jim's friend) and Matt, we're excited about the day ahead at the 9th oldest golf club in England.
A golf course that is known for its stunning golf, and one of the courses on the celebrated and feted "Golf Coast" in and around Southport, we can't wait to test ourselves out there and report back to you.
Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire is steeped in history. It is a patch of golfing turf that is revered and respected in equal measure.
Ranked 25th on our list, it punches with the big boys, but it's one that only a lot of golf people have heard of. The casual fan may not know of its place in history or that it even exists.
We will be playing Ganton as part of the Mizuno golf pairs competition, so find out what we think lies in store for us at historic Ganton.
It's our 2025 U.S Open top picks & preview episode, with our special guest, Shawn Massie, from The FairWagers and the Must Play Podcast.
Shawn gave us a fantastic overview of Oakmont Country Club, where this year's edition of the US Open is being played, and despite its mighty reputation, history, and the fact that it's hosted the U.S Open the most times, very few people know too much about it.
Shawn was good enough to give us a rundown of the top contenders and the kind of attributes that the winner will probably need.
The Must Play Podcast is one you definitely should check out, we've been meaning to get these guys on for quite a while now.
Who is Golf's GOAT? It's a debate that rages on. We looked in AWE at Tiger in our Christmas Special episode, we even had an Instagram post go viral because of it...
So we looked into Jack Nicklaus and his INSANE stats! And we were STUNNED at how good Jack was. The man was a machine. What do you think about the Jack vs Tiger debate? We're BIG Tiger Woods fans, but this got us seriously questioning where we lay in the debate.
Is Jack Nicklaus the GOAT, or is Tiger Woods the GOAT?

Was Woodhall Spa Hotchkin Course The Hardest In The UK?
22 Apr 2025
00:58:41
We played and this is the review for our round at the hardest golf course in the UK, Woodhall Spa Hotchkin Course, Lincolnshire, England
Have a look at our scorecard & pictures from the day in our blog
On a stunningly glorious day, we had a blast on these challenging fairways (when we found them) but it must be said, the fearsome reputation that the Hotchkin Course has, is well warranted.
Find out how we did, but also our thoughts on the course, along with our regular side bet, and signature hole challenge
This is a tale of differing rounds and fortunes amongst the 142 bunkers at what is the National Golf Centre for England.
The facilites to wamrn up and practice were second to none, and set the tone for what was to come.
Catch our unfiltered raw reaction to the final round of the 2025 US Masters.
We're calling it Rory's Redemption, where Rory McIlroy buried the ghosts of the past with a nervy, but drama-packed final round performance to seal his career Grand Slam, thereby joining the pantheon of golfing greats.

Join us in our preview of the hardest rated course in England, Woodhall Spa Hotchkin Course!
We talk about why it's rated so hard, and the challenges we will face, and we talk more in depth with Jim about his first experience playing a top 100 course and also a links course.
It was really enlightening to get his perspective on both, because it dawned on us that a lot of our listeners may be in a similar boat and his experience may resonate.
A round and experience for the ages! This episode is our Aberdovey Golf Club review, and what a day it was.
Accompanied by our trusted guide, Gareth, the Chair of Memberships at the club, we took on this stunning golf course, and you'll be surprised to learn of our golf on the way.
We tried to do this great golf course justice in our review, so hear about how we navigated the highs and lows, and you'll hear from the main man himself, Gareth too.
We discuss our signature hole challenge, our side bet, and the acquaintances you make along the journey we call golf.
If we could bottle this golf, feeling, welcome and experience up and take it everywhere with us, we would be very lucky indeed.
A big shout out to all the team at the club, who made us so welcome, and Gareth, who you will be hearing about more in the future too, a true friend of the pod.
We're back playing golf, and we start with a bang at Royal St David's Golf Club in Gwynedd, Wales!

A golf weekend or trip... it's a thing of beauty! In this episode, we discuss why it's so good, and the key differences between a golf trip in the UK and US.
We've got 2 special guests to help us in our task, the hosts of friends of the podcast, TJ & Gary from The Basic Bogeys Podcast
They joined us to talk golf trips, and as usual, we drifted and meandered and ended up talking all things golf and life.
I (Nish) am fascinated by golf culture abroad, and nowhere captures my interest more than Golf in Japan!
It feels very different to how we play golf in the UK, and I wanted to explore that.
In a chat with Kieron from Golf In Japan, The comprehensive guide and service for golfing in Japan, we discovered the golfing customs of Japan, the history of Golf in Japan, and the little touches around a round of golf there that make it so different and so special!
We weren't prepared for just how much knowledge Kieron had, and you can see how that would come in handy when his company is organising golf trips and experiences for visitors from around the world.
We headed over to Sheffield to meet Will at Zen Green Stage to chat about what they are doing with immersive indoor golf experiences at a time when TGL is in its first season and grabbing headlines for the technology, particularly THAT green!
In a wide-ranging, and ultimately thoroughly interesting chat, we talked about how technology is impacting golf today and how Zen Golf are using things like the Zen Green Stage and the Swing Stage to improve your game and make you a better all-round golfer.
Will Stubbs is the Managing Director at Zen Golf, where they're leading the charge to make golf more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for players of all levels. Zen Golf’s vision of More People, Playing Better, For Longer is at the heart of everything they do. Through products like the Green Stage and Swing Stage, Zen Golf helps golfers train in conditions that replicate real golf courses, enhancing the transfer of learning from practice to play.
Will’s MSc in Sport & Exercise Science gave him a deeper understanding of how sports science can improve coaching methods. His research underscored the importance of adapting golf coaching to the dynamic, unpredictable nature of the sport, moving away from rigid, technique-driven practices.
Will’s passion for creating research-backed, effective learning platforms has helped shape Zen Golf’s approach. By bringing the golf course indoors and enriching it with data they're encouraging golfers to embrace instinctive movement that harnesses their human nature. By fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusive growth, Zen Golf is on a mission to ensure that golfers continue to grow and enjoy the game for years to come.

He has been on American Golf diversity TV adverts on Sky Sports, he's a Junior Ambassador for Foresight Sports - UpNext Program and he's also a Junior Ambassador for Capto Putting Technology!
Add to that, he's a very level-headed young man.
This is an episode we've been really looking forward to. A chance to speak to a real emerging talent in golf in the UK.
Ellis told us about his golfing journey so far, how he approaches the game, and the challenges he faces as he tries to carve out a career at the pinnacle of golf.
We discussed aspects like balancing his life at 15, training and help available to golfers his age, and what it's like being a member at a Top 100 golf course, Royal Liverpool (Hoylake)
This was a jam-packed episode and Ellis is really one to watch. Give him a follow on Instagram @elliscourtnellgolf
Make Golf Great Again! Trump International Golf Links Review
07 Oct 2025
00:50:14
We set out to play Trump International Links Aberdeen ready to be critical and left stunned by the course’s strategy, conditioning, and theatre. The dunes, the angles, and the par-5 finish combined to move it to our top spot, even with a polarising name and price tag.
• our top 100 in 10 years challenge • divisive reputation versus on-course reality • slope ratings, tees, and managing fear • strategy over ego: position play that works • conditioning and maintenance philosophy • front nine highlights and elevated tee vistas • the hook-shaped 10th and amphitheatre green • signature 14th: beauty, pressure, coastline • 18th hole: extreme length and design drama • scoring, side bets, and net results • pro shop pricing and visitor experience • ranking, value, and comparisons to other Scottish heavyweights • Ryder Cup reactions: tension, behaviour, and future venues

We're playing a pair competition at Ganton Golf Club in June, in this episode, we chat about comps in general.
They can sound intimidating for the casual, social golfer, but are they really?
Nish & Chris have a chat to find out.

We had a great chat with him, talking all things Top 100!
Guess who's back! Denika's back - our resident Physio!
She's here to discuss all things golf physio related and golf pilates related.
We had a great chat about her general help for us golfers coming out of our winter slumbers, she recommends a quick warm up YOU can do immediately and then she does a great golf physio question & answer session to answer some of your questions.
We've had a great chat with Harbs from @harbs7golf about his experiences playing Golf in the UAE.
In what turned into a very insightful look into a different golf culture, we discussed how he got into the game, his earliest memories, and how the golfing landscape is developing in a part of the world where more tournaments and money is arriving by the day.
We also talked about how our lives are impacted by golf and what the next few years have in store for us.
In the first episode of 2025, we discuss the annual Nish Invitational, and all that entails.
The Nish Invitational is an annual golf day we organise for Nish's birthday. It's a great fun day, with a bit of healthy competition, and a lot of time spent in the 19th Hole!

Merry Christmas from The Top 100 in 10 Golf Podcast team!
It's always one of the first questions to come up on any top 100 golf courses discussion... how do they compile the rankings? Here's your chance to find out...
We did the hard work and dug out the rating and golf course ranking system used by the official top 100 list we're using, and here it is, in all it's glory - for you to digest.
Of course, we take an irreverent look at it, and we also go on to discuss our own ranking "system" and the Dream 18 - our takeaway of the 18 best holes we play as we navigate our way to 100 golf courses in 10 years.
We also never realised how much innuendo we'd in our trawling of the official top 100 website! It's worth listening just to find that out
Brrrr... it's here... WINTER! How will we go about keeping everything progressing over these colder months. And we don't just mean the quest, but also our games.
We've started grappling with our respective golf games as we bed in the challenge to play the top 100 golf courses in 10 years. Maybe the scores are starting to matter a bit more.
In this episode, we chat about what we've booked next year, our experience of golf simulators, and check in with Chris about his progress with his golf lessons.
In this special episode of the Top 100 in 10 Golf Podcast, we answer some the great questions we were sent in by our listeners.
We had a fantastic time answering these and so much so, that we had to do it as a 2 part episode.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we do, and THANK YOU for caring enough to send these through, it means a lot to have the chance to have this kind of interaction with you all out there.

30 Oct 2024
00:54:57
Join us in this episode of the Top 100 in 10 Golf Podcast, as we play round THREE of 100 at the famous Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club.
With our gracious hosts Matt and Paul, we discuss our experience on the day, how we played, our side challenge, and the excellent facilities of this great club.
A twice host of the Ryder Cup, S&A is rightly held in high regard, but what would our review of the round be?
As usual, it's never a smooth path, and there are plenty of ups and downs, and that's not restricted to the golf!
We had a great day and would like to thank Matt and Paul, and we may have them join us for more courses on the journey ahead.
