I’m not exactly sure how, but my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, Rachel G. Scott, must have 30 hours in each of her days.  It's the only logical explanation for how many creative areas she excels in.  

Rachel’s love of creativity was established at a very young age and grew with every new creative outlet she tried.  Learning the flute, teaching herself the piano, singing in the church choir, on top of loving to draw and write poetry, all led her to feel connected to God's presence.    

Of course, not every season of our lives is filled with perfect harmony.  For a long period, Rachel felt unable to connect to her gift of singing.  And that's the story I really want y'all to listen to in this episode.

I believe there’s a key way to discern the truth of what you’re hearing, and it involves the tone and tenor of the message you’re receiving.  The character of God is to give invitations, not accusations.  

If the voice you’re hearing is accusing you of not being good enough, or of not being deserving of success, or words like that, you know that’s not the Lord.  It’s time to tune that out.

Have you ever met a kindred soul, someone who just gets you?  That’s how I felt when I met my guest on the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, Chris Lumry.  Chris and I share a love for Jesus, a love for creativity, and a passion for seeing people’s hearts unlocked.   

Chris grew up very achievement-oriented, and without much of a feeling of being a creative person.  He was educated in the finest schools, got a job in Silicon Valley, and was on his way to achieving what he thought were his life’s goals.  But it was coming at a cost.  

He lacked fulfillment.  He battled addiction.  He was hurting inside and in denial of his own struggles.  

Eventually, praise God, he sought counseling for his issues, which led him to a church in Northern California.  And that’s where he experienced something he never had before:  the presence of God as a father in his life  

This life-changing experience opened him up to childlikeness and creativity he didn’t know he possessed, and he turned it into a mission to provide this experience to others.

Have you ever felt like you were doing all the right things and were still not experiencing fulfillment?  Like you are still struggling in everything?

Do you live in a big city with a thriving art scene?  Are there high-quality galleries on every street corner and throngs of enthusiasts lining up for every art show?  

Believe it or not, not everybody has easy access to what you would call a “good” art scene.  Artists in smaller towns, rural locations, that sort of thing, may have a hard time getting their art noticed.  

The best they can do in their local area may be to showcase their art at a local art fair or streetside art walk, and chances are they'll be positioned right next to other art that is... not so great.    

And you know how that one house on the street with the overgrown weeds, peeling paint, and broken windows makes the whole street look bad no matter how nice the other houses are?  The same perception happens with art, too.

When God inspires you to do something, do you do it no matter what?  

My guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, Jessa Brantley, is a perfect example of what can happen when you go all in on following God’s inspiration for your life.  

Jessa was working as an accountant (“the least creative job a person can have,” she says) who dabbled in making wooden signs as an artistic outlet.  But when she stumbled on wood-turning videos online, she was “mesmerized” by them, and knew that she had to give it a go herself.  

Overcoming the nervousness of trying a new thing, especially a thing that was in a field dominated by men, she took the lathe her husband got her for Christmas and taught herself how to turn wood into beautiful bowls.  

From there she took step after step on the path God showed her, including taking my masterclass.  Next thing you know, she had taken her art and made it into a successful, thriving business!

Sometimes no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to get ahead.  

My friend Maria Morris has had to fight through this for quite a long time.  She has followed God’s call to be an artist and a teacher, but she could never seem to break through on the financial side of things.  

Selling her art and classes on her own website and trying her luck on Skillshare and Etsy only led to inconsistent income and uncertainty.  Money would come and money would go, and all Maria could do was try to react.

We all feel heavy burdens in our lives from time to time.  It can come in many forms, and from many places.  It can be disruptive to your life and your pursuit of happiness.  In these times, we all feel a need for healing that’s hard to come by.  

Lynnette Horn, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, has felt that burden weighing her down in a really disruptive way.  After a tornado destroyed her home - but miraculously not Lynnette - she found her normal, creative life torn to pieces, just like her house.  

Lynnette went from painting daily and enjoying her creativity to being unable to pick up a brush.  She suffered through four years of being emotionally disconnected from everything that she formerly thrived on, including her art.  But God had more in store for her.

I encourage you to listen to Lynnette tell her heartbreaking and uplifting story.  If you are going through something like Lynnette was, her story may be just the encouragement you need to get through it.

Painting with acrylics…wood-carving…clay sculptures…oil painting…making baskets…cake decorating.  There are so many awesome art media that it can be hard to just pick one!

We have so many ways to express ourselves creatively that it can be hard to "settle" for one creative outlet when you are excited about so many others.

New trends, techniques, and technology have always had an effect on how art is created.  We’ve gone from painting on the walls of caves to painting the ceilings of cathedrals.  From canvas and oils to all-digital masterpieces.  

Progress marches on, and art marches right along with it.

“Making it” in the art business isn’t easy.  Every day, somebody decides that they’re going to make a go of living off of their art, and every day somebody else gives up on their dream.  For every artist who “makes it,” there are probably ten more who don’t.  

I don’t say that to discourage you - because it doesn’t have to be that way!

So what’s the difference between those who succeed and those who fail?

What would you do if the Lord told you to get up in the middle of the night and paint the Holy Spirit?

No pressure, right? 😬

In 2004, Amy Rylander, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist, decided to paint just a little something for herself as an outlet and release for her creativity.  She got some paints and canvases for Mother's Day, and she was excited to get started.  

But she wasn’t expecting for her inspiration to come from the Father himself!

She felt the Lord showing her how to paint the Holy Spirit in two dimensions.  And from then on, she put her paintings in God's hands, painting what He calls her to paint.  

Now Amy and her husband Donald lead a church in Jackson, Mississippi, called We Are One.  Amy has put her trust in the Lord to guide her art, her ministry, and her business, and she's continuing to branch out to different avenues like writing.  

Amy is not only an incredible artist, but a leader in the body of Christ.  And she has a real heart - like I do - for healing, and identity, and wholeness, and just walking in who Jesus created you to be.

Change is never easy.  And the bigger the change, the tougher it can be.  😬

One of the biggest challenges any artist faces is getting their art out in front of the people so they can get paid for their work.  Galleries and exhibitions are hard to come by, especially for artists who may live outside of the big cities.  Promoting your work on your own website or Instagram can lead to sales, but you have to put in a lot of work to get noticed.  

A lot of artists take commissions as a large source of their income, but even at that, your customers have to be able to find you to commission you for work.

When we were expecting our son, Cameron, we went through every baby name book out there, trying to figure out the perfect name for our little bundle of joy.  It felt like such a HUGE decision, and we didn’t want to mess it up!

Naming your business feels kind of like that.  It’s not just a name - it’s a brand, a representation of what you and your art bring to the world.      

The name of your art business needs to be memorable, unique, and authentic to you and your art.  It needs to be searchable, easy to spell, and allow you to be consistent across social media.  Oh, and being catchy and clever wouldn’t hurt.

On my first trip to Africa 20+ years ago, one of the things I looked forward to most was entering into the sounds of the real Africa - to learn from them, to feel the culture and rhythms of an ancient people.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. 😕

They had adopted almost exclusively U.S.-based worship music. The sound of their culture in worship was but a memory…overshadowed by what they saw as “the best way” rather than uncovering their own sound and expression in worship.

Mary Elizabeth Kolsrud is a singer, songwriter, author, and worship leader from Iowa who has found her way to Norway as a “musicianary.”  She’s reaching the hearts of people in Norway and all over Europe with her music and worship, and with her online and in-person worship school.   

And Mary Elizabeth has made it a point to show respect to the culture, incorporating traditional Norwegian instruments and language in everything she does.  

That’s what’s so great about using art and music in worship.  There’s no one way to bring the Kingdom to the people.  God can use all forms and genres and languages to spread the message of salvation.

Sharing your creative work can be a very daunting task.  What people are going to say?  Will they like it?  Is your art “good enough?”  If they don’t like it, does that mean you’re not a "real artist?"  

If this sounds familiar, you’re in good company.  Everybody feels some trepidation about sharing their work from time to time.  

It's a normal reaction to putting yourself in a vulnerable position.  

It would be easy to shut our art away in a closet or in our studio, protected from criticism and other people’s opinions.

But art is meant to be shared!  Don’t hide it under a bushel - let it shine! ⭐

So what can you do to conquer this fear and put your art out there?

In the entertainment world, someone who can sing, dance, and act is referred to as a “triple threat.”  

Scribes were the triple threats of Bible times.  They were artists, writers, historians, and archivists.  They were a bit of everything under the sun - polymaths in the truest sense of the word.

That’s why I love that my guest on the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, Theresa Harvard Johnson, is a triple threat for sure!

There are people out there, especially on the internet, who will tell you that they can show you how to quadruple your art sales and make millions of dollars from selling your art...if you will just follow their super-special marketing techniques.  

But here's the truth:  I don’t care how great of a marketer you are.  If your art isn’t up to snuff, it ain’t gonna sell.   

Marketing isn’t the secret foolproof key to unlocking success in the art world.  

There are three aspects of your life that have to be in alignment in order to thrive as an artist:  your faith, your art, and your business.

I don’t believe that the Lord wants us to live lives of misery, scraping by and struggling.  Instead, He wants us to live abundantly and beautifully in this world He has created for us.

Quick question - what’s your number?

No, I don’t mean your phone number. ☎️

I mean that specific dollar amount it would take for you to achieve your goals as an artist who’s selling your work in the marketplace.

Building up the role of art ministries in the church is a very big task.  In fact, it sure seems like it’s too big for one person to handle.  It’s a good thing that my guests on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artists podcast, Greg and Susan Card, have each other to lean on.  

Greg and Susan have been creating art their whole lives.  When they met, they bonded over their love for art and their love for the Lord, they got married, and they went about the work of bringing art into the church.  

Back in the 80s, there wasn’t much of a position for art in the way churches ministered to the people, so Greg and Susan had their work cut out for them.  

But they’ve stayed at it, keeping their ears to the Spirit, maintaining a flow with creating their own art, and being in the ministry as the Lord directed them.  

Together, they’ve learned to patiently work on the Lord’s timetable, not their own.  And they’ve always been there for each other.  Their story is really inspiring, and I’m honored to share it with you on the podcast.

One of the biggest struggles that creatives have is finding the time in our lives to be creative.  With all the pressures of the day, we’re lucky if we can let our creative energies flow for an hour on any given day.  

Dan McCollam, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, has heard this from people all around the world, but he’s not buying it.  

Instead, Dan will tell you that you need to make your creative time a priority as a part of seeking God’s kingdom.  Don’t wait for inspiration to drop on you.  If you want inspiration, get in the studio and get to work, and you’ll find it.     

See, one of Dan’s passions (along with playing music, leading worship, and helping people in every nation create their own “sound” for worship music) is to help people hear the voice of God in their lives.  That’s why he co-founded “Prophetic Company,” an organization that helps people recognize God’s voice so they can respond to it and live with greater clarity and purpose.  

God is already speaking to you - you just have to find the way you are best suited to connect and receive His word, be open to what He is saying, and activate the gifts that are already inside you.

What’s the one question I hear most frequently?  (Other than “Would you like fries with that?”  What can I say - we’ve been traveling a lot lately! 😆)

It’s probably some form of:  "How do you go from being a hobby or part-time artist to being able to do art full-time?"    

This can definitely feel like a massive leap, especially for folks who are currently working a more traditional 40 hour/week job.

What it is like to go from feeling like you’ve lost your creativity and giving up on art, to creating art that moves and inspires everyone who sees it?  

Ask Jeanette Sthamann.  

Jeanette didn’t grow up a Christian, but she did grow up loving art.  That is…until a short-sighted art teacher discouraged her art and made her think she wasn’t creative. It was enough to make her cast aside art for years.

After some dark and heavy years as a teen and young adult, she found herself at the end of her rope and cried out to God.  

And He responded, telling her to start drawing.  

As she did, she felt God’s peace as a gift to her.  In time, she decided to add painting to her repertoire, so she took lessons from an art teacher who happened to be the wife of a pastor.  Before long, she had unburdened herself of the darkness that was on her and gave her life to Jesus, right in the art studio.

When you come to a roadblock while driving, what do you do?  You backtrack, pull out the GPS, and navigate around it to get back on course.

Sometimes, as a Christian, it’s hard to know exactly what God is telling you.

For my friend Tan-Yah Jackson, the messages she was receiving from God were really confusing…God’s voice was telling her to not quit creating art because that’s who she is meant to be…and yet He was also telling her to quit art for Him.  

So how did she know which voice to follow?  

She didn’t - so she followed both!

They say that change doesn’t happen overnight…but my friend Anne Ashton would respectfully disagree!  

Anne’s introduction to the art world is unlike almost anybody else’s I’ve ever encountered. No spoilers…but let’s just say that the Lord transformed her into an artist basically overnight!  

Everything in Anne’s artistic life comes from following what the Lord is guiding her to do.  Learning how to paint, moving from realism to abstract art, getting her paintings in shows and shops nearby… all at God’s instruction.  

Now she’s following God’s lead to teach painting to everybody from corporate groups to vulnerable members of society like unwed teen mothers.  And some of her most amazing stories come from her art ministry to prisoners, encouraging them to express themselves in media from graffiti to finger paints.  

Her outreach is really making a difference in people’s lives in all walks of life, and I think her story may very well inspire you to do the same.

I have a confession to make.

When I first started building my art business, I had no idea what I was doing at first. 😳

Okay, maybe that isn’t that big of a confession - I think a lot of business owners feel this same way!

My guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast is Rebecca Friedlander, who joined me way back in episode 141 to talk about her film project, The Thin Places, and boy, has she been busy since then!

Rebecca is an artistic polymath (isn’t that an awesome word?), meaning she makes art in many different media and categories and is always moving from project to project nonstop.  She’s a film producer, graphic designer, fine artist, worship leader, author, speaker...you name it, and Rebecca is into it!

Rebecca actually started out with a desire to be a singer and even wrote hundreds of songs before she finished high school.  But God had other plans for her future in art and ministry.  So we’re talking about the challenges and rewards of following God’s plan - even when it doesn’t mesh with YOUR plan - here on the podcast.

I remember how I felt when I first started thinking about turning my art into a business.  Excited, nervous, scared, hopeful…  All the emotions were fighting for space in my mind and it was hard to concentrate on anything else.  

And maybe that’s what you’re feeling right now.  When you start any kind of business, there’s so much to consider and weigh out, and that goes double when your business is going to live or die by your creative output.

Have you ever experienced a tug-of-war between your art and other aspects of your life - as if the two can’t exist simultaneously?  

Chad Atkins had art inside him from a very early age.  He grew up in a family of artists, and he never let a day of his childhood go by without drawing.  

But he also had a strong desire to live his life for the Lord.  

His artistic nature and his faith began to clash when he encountered the teachings of Smith Wigglesworth and other revivalists.  And in an effort to remove anything that hindered him from God’s presence… out went the art.  

After years of inner turmoil and outer sickness, Chad realized that while his heart was in the right place, when he denied his inner artist, he was denying God’s plan for his life.  

Now Chad is re-discovering the artist inside, painting every night, and even selling some of his works.  He’s not trying to have too rigid a view of the future - just doing what God has put inside him to do and living the Kingdom life.

Truth time: God doesn’t want you to be comfortable. He isn’t a La-Z-Boy salesman.   

If you’re too comfortable, you’re not moving forward…and God’s going to start poking you until  you do.  

Allen Paul found that out in his life when he was secure in his jobs as a teacher and at a church…but God wouldn’t stop poking him.  Allen had financial security, but he just knew he wasn’t doing what God was calling him to do.  

The only solution was to leave that security behind and trust God to show him the way forward.  

Now, after experiencing the ups and downs of finding his way in the gig economy, Allen has his love of music, teaching, and ministering all working together, the way God intended.  And he’s using his experience to help other musicians and artists learn the things Allen wished he had known when he was starting out, through his multi-platform ministry, God And Gigs.

Back in the day, when I was working on staff at churches, I was the “creative guy” - which meant that I was the default graphic designer of the group!

Now, truth be told, this was NOT my area of expertise, but I dove into Adobe Photoshop and slogged my way through it.  Let’s just say that it was…a challenge. 😆
