Retirement is a time for taking it easy. Relaxing. Putting aside all that work you’ve done for so many years and just doing… nothing. Right?
Not if you’re Michael Duty.
Michael, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, retired from his decades of work as an architect in his own firm, and all of a sudden he had to figure out how to fill his days. So he took it to the Lord, praying for guidance on what God wanted him to do. The answer? “Write your story!”
That encouragement from God was just what he needed. Michael wrote a memoir, then began to make writing a priority on a daily basis. Realizing the value of the time he now had, he also put renewed energy into painting, and he even took up the violin. He’s busier in retirement than he was when he was working!
Michael and I talked about how you can use the time you are given to serve the Lord in more ways than most people can dream of, if you let Him move your creativity. We also talked about how fiction (such as his new novel, Canaan Found) can be used to reach people with God’s message effectively without being preachy. It was a great conversation, and I hope you’ll listen to this episode.

In my many, many years as an artist and a mentor of artists, I've seen triumphs and challenges of every description. And while every artist's story is different, there is one thing I have seen that can get in the way of any artist's success.
I'll give you a hint: comparison.
Artists have a tendency to compare themselves to other artists and peers in a variety of different ways. And when you start to make those comparisons, you're treading a path that has led many an artist to give up.
In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I go over why I think comparison is such a problem for artists, and how they can avoid falling into that trap. It's an important lesson, and you should really take it to heart.

Being a professional artist, by definition, requires you to sell your art. Selling your art requires buyers to be interested enough to shell out actual money so they can take your work home. And getting buyers interested requires your art to be good - really, really good.
But we aren’t always the best judges of our own work, so it’s hard for an artist just starting out to look at a piece and say, “Yep, that’ll sell.” What artists need are guidelines they can follow to objectively determine whether their art is good enough to sell.
As a long-time professional artist myself, I’ve picked up a lot of the ins and outs of the business, and I usually have a good idea of what’s going to sell. Looking back at my career as an artist so far, I’m not sure I would change a thing. Sure, I’ve had ups and downs along the way, just as everyone else has. But I’m exactly where God has put me, so how could I ask for anything more?

Estelle Avbuere, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist, received encouragement from her parents at a young age to pursue the joys of the performing arts. Dancing, singing, acting, crafting, and doing art projects were all a part of her childhood that she came to love and embrace as a part of herself.
However, she didn't see those pursuits as a way she could live her life for the Lord in the way she felt like she should. After much prayer and fasting and spending time with the Lord, asking Him what He is calling her to do, in time the voice of God told her that her calling has been in front of her the whole time - the performing arts!
And that's how Estelle got on the path her life is on today. She embraced God's calling and has dedicated her life to helping others hear and follow that same call. Through her podcast and other outlets, she is reaching out and encouraging people to surrender their fears and doubts to God and embrace His calling to sing, dance, perform, and create!

The first and most important thing when it comes to prophetic art - that is, art that God inspires you to create to advance His Kingdom - is to do God’s will. Paint that painting. Sculpt that sculpture. Create what God would have you create.
Sometimes, though, prophetic artists do all that, but their art doesn’t actually sell. So why does that happen? Are you not supposed to sell prophetic art? Are there ways to improve your sales while staying true to your calling?
In this episode, I discuss the realities of selling art, whether it’s prophetic or not. I believe there can be a connection between prophetic art and thriving in the professional art world. In fact, I’ve written books about this, done hundreds of podcasts, coached countless artists… it’s kinda my thing. 😀

Coral Noel Yang has seen more of the world than most of us can imagine. She was born and raised in Taiwan, studied filmmaking in America, put that education to use in Hollywood, and moved to New Zealand for a steady job at an animation studio.
Along the way, she brought two things with her: her love of God and her passion for creating art.
Of course, the daily challenges of work and family made it hard to find time to express herself in her own art for quite some time, until the day God put it on her heart to shift her life’s focus to her painting and other artistic endeavors.

Fear is the biggest challenge when it comes to money, especially if you don’t have a lot.
We are encouraged to be good stewards of the gifts God gives us, including our money. But part of that good stewardship is investing wisely, like in the Parable of the Talents. If you’re too afraid to do anything but bury your Master’s gift in the ground, you won’t be able to reap the rewards that come with investment by faith.
Now, I’m not saying you should throw what you have away on bubble gum and scratch-off tickets, but you can’t be afraid to use your money as an investment in what you need in order to follow God’s plan for your life.

You’ve heard the saying, “The Lord’s work is never done.” Well, let me tell you, that’s the absolute truth!
I’ve been following God’s call in my life for years now to raise up an army of artists in the Kingdom, and the blessings that have flowed through that process have been more than I ever could have imagined. If that was the only thing I did in this life, I would feel satisfied with my contribution to the Kingdom.
But God isn’t satisfied with the status quo. He has put it on my heart over the last couple of years to expand the way I reach out to people beyond the art world, beyond the podcasts and books and programs I’ve put together so far.

Do you ever look at your to-do list, then at your calendar, and then think, “There’s no way I’m going to find the time to get all this done.”
That feeling is universal, I would say. I would also say that it’s especially prevalent when you have jobs and responsibilities that often need to come before the artistic endeavors you really want to sink your teeth into.
Looking at a whole plate of broccoli that you have to eat before you’re allowed to have that mouth-watering brownie can be pretty frustrating.
So how can creatives find the time to create when they have so much else to do? My guest on this episode of The Thriving Christian Artist, Kimberly Gordon, has it all figured out.
Kimberly has managed to write and publish more than 10 books since age 46, all while raising children, homeschooling, and holding down jobs as necessary. (And these aren’t just little flappy pamphlets here. These are, like, tomes.)

Beth Affolter was a successful professional artist until my podcast inspired her to quit art.
No, really! It’s true!
Despite making regular sales, Beth’s art business wasn’t fulfilling her. Listening to my podcast got her thinking about what God was calling her to do, and she realized that it wasn’t to push for perfection and wear herself down trying to create art that would sell.
After years of striving hard for success in everything she did (and largely finding it), she learned to just let go of it. She learned to walk in the Kingdom in peace and faithfully follow God's plan for her.
Teaching, graphic design, mentoring, painting… all steps along her path that have led her to where she is now - teaching other people how to co-create with God while simultaneously teaching them to hone their skills.
And now she's on the cusp of launching her own online courses and membership program, thanks to God leading her in a direction she never could have anticipated.

From the outside looking in, you would think a working artist would never get burned out or bored. After all, who else gets to follow their passion and do the thing they love the most in the world and make a good living doing it?
But burnout and boredom are real obstacles that every artist has to overcome.
Maybe you’re working so much, preparing for shows, doing commissions, and all that, and it’s just become so overwhelming that you want just put it all away for a while. Or maybe you’ve hit a lull in your schedule and in your commission work and you just have to force yourself to get SOMETHING done to feel productive.
Many artists bounce back and forth between these two states without finding a happy medium, mostly because they don’t know how to resolve the problem.

“Matt, how do I know when it’s time to raise my prices?”
This is a great question - and one I get all the time.
After all, setting prices for your art involves a lot of different factors that can be hard to juggle - market comparisons, cost of living, your time and effort, and even your own sense of self-worth, to an extent.

When you’re stressed, overwhelmed, or struggling to find the time for what God has called you to do, there’s one little word that can help you a lot:
No.
Being able to say no to things that are adding to your overwhelm, or are stumbling blocks in the way of God’s plan for you, is a very powerful tool to have in your tool chest. Unfortunately, it can be hard for many of us to actually pull out that tool and use it when the time comes.
But if you can learn to say no to the things that are not bringing you closer to God's design and assignment for you in the Kingdom, you will be empowered and open to say yes to the things that are.

Author, speaker, and coach Allen Arnold, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist, says that there are two worldviews we can live in as Christians. One is what most folks, even most Christians, seem to experience - a worldview where God is an intangible presence whom we hope to please but who is ultimately detached from our daily lives.
The other worldview is the one shared by Adam and Even way back in the Garden of Eden - a worldview where God is walking with us and connected to us in a real, ever-present way.
Allen says the challenge Christians face is to move from that more detached worldview to what he calls The Eden Option. It’s the option we were always meant to live in, the option that was lost with Adam and Eve’s failings in the face of temptation, but it’s something we can return to. And as artists, that will mean going from trying to be creative for God to co-creating with God.
Allen and I talk about the four-fold framework of returning to the Eden Option, and you’ll be inspired by this life-changing message. Take a listen!

If you’ve ever felt the Lord calling you to move forward to a new thing He has for your life, then you’ve probably also felt the desire to stay put right where you are.
It’s perfectly normal and natural to want to stick with where you are and not take the risky path, especially if things are going pretty well for you. A good job, a nice house, a comfortable rhythm to your life… those things aren’t easy to put aside in favor of the unknown future.
As a working artist, or a budding artist considering going pro, you’re bound to feel this tension when determining what God wants for your life.
But if you’re truly hearing God’s call, you can trust that He has your best interest in His heart. He has your provision all taken care of. He would never steer you wrong.
In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I talk about that tension between trusting the Lord and holding on to the status quo, and I give you my two cents on how to work through it. Take a listen.

Some people seem to have been given more than 24 hours in their days, and my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist is one of those people. She’s Rebecca Friedlander, and I’m super-excited to welcome her back to the show.
Rebecca is a full-time minister, a creative artist, a musician, a film producer, an author, a speaker, and is even in the process of renovating a cabin. But the thing she does best is help people hear God’s voice and feel His presence in their lives.

We all more-or-less have an idea of the Kingdom of God as a goal to strive for and a guiding principle for living. But it can be tough to define the specifics of how we can achieve that goal and what we can do as individuals to tilt the world in that direction.

Lisa Kozel Mangione has always been drawn to all things aquatic. The beach, the ocean, and sea creatures have been a big part of Lisa’s life since she was a kid, so it was only natural that they became a big focus of Lisa’s art, as well.
Lisa felt the tug of a Kingdom-led calling to be an artist, but she didn’t have a roadmap to make the transition from hobbyist to working artist, at least not until she found my Artist Rise Up masterclass on Facebook. When she took the masterclass, a fire was lit in her that’s burning bright still today.

Starting out in a small town in India, Mary’s education took her to a 12-year career in mass communication and television production - but her love of dance and art never left her heart. In time, she felt the insistent pull of the Lord leading her to a whole new season in her life of pursuing her art.
By faithfully surrendering to God’s will, she was empowered to turn her talents at painting and driftwood sculpture into a successful art business.
In our talk, Mary shares how some divine appointments (and a couple of my books!) led her to discover her unique design and how that led her to pursue her passion for art full-time.

Thriving is all about flourishing in what God has called you to and experiencing the abundance, joy, and fulfillment God created us for.

My guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast is Jeff Brewer, a product launch expert to other online experts. Jeff helps people launch and scale their businesses online.
So what does he have to do with art, you may ask?
Well, think about this. When you create a piece for your art business, you want it to sell, right? You want to get it in front of the right people who will want to buy it, and maybe drive more sales when their friends see your amazing piece hanging on their wall, right?
Every time you put a new piece out there, you are technically launching a product. Sorry if that doesn't sound as artsy or romantic as you might want, but it's true.
And if you want to have the most successful launch possible for your art, you should take some lessons from what Jeff has to say. His product launch tips and strategies are just as effective for sculptures and paintings as they are for personal development courses or anything else you could launch. If we’re called by God to be creative, doesn’t that mean we should never have trouble creating?
There are times when the art is flowing out of us, the paint is leaping oto the canvas, the clay is taking shape at our slightest whims, and we can feel the Holy Spirit co-creating with us.
But sometimes it doesn’t feel like that. Sometimes we enter the studio and all we can do is stare at the emptiness, with no inspiration for how to fill it. Does that mean God has abandoned us to our creative anxiety?
Well, fear not, my friends. Creative anxiety, writer’s block, imposter syndrome, and all of those issues that creative people face are perfectly normal. You haven’t done anything wrong. The Lord is still with you, as He always is.
In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I go over some of the things I’ve found help artists to overcome whenever creative anxiety rears its ugly head. Give it a listen and get back to being the artist God has called you to be!
