This week we are speaking to Matt Lewis, the Head of Architecture & Diagnostics at Aston Martin Lagonda. 

Matt secured himself a place at the University of Glamorgan in South Wales, where he began a four-year degree in Electronic & Communication Engineering. This honed his engineering ability, as he excelled in the practical aspects of the course, graduating with a First-Class Honours. 

Matt has worked multiple roles during his five years at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and was selected to participate in their Management Development Programme (MDP). He eventually led a small team, and before taking an opportunity at Bentley as the Manager of Electrical Test, Integration, and Build—a role that became the springboard for his leadership career in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. 

At Bentley, Matt led a highly skilled and determined team, and his leadership was improved by a 12-month Volkswagen leadership programme, where he attained the Volkswagen leadership license. This program provided him with valuable tools that helped him navigate complex situations throughout his career.

After seven successful years at Bentley, Matt was offered the opportunity to lead a department consisting of four talented teams. He is now the Head of Architecture & Diagnostics at Aston Martin, a position he has held for two years. In this role, he is responsible for EE Architecture & Networks, Systems & Feature Engineering, Functional Safety, Vehicle Cyber Security, and Diagnostics.

We also talk about Battery Electric Vehicles, Ultra-high efficiency engines, and the impact of changing legislations.

This week we are speaking to Florian Turke, the Head of Cell Test, System, and Simulation at Skeleton Technologies. 

We truly see simulation operating as the heart of our industry at the moment, and it's great to unwrap how Florian has built this skill set up throughout his career. He provides us with some great technical insights into what is coming up in our industry and the role of super-capacitors blended with battery technology to unleash a new solution in our space.

He also gives us a solid first-hand perspective into the E/V industry and breaks down the importance of simulation tests for battery development, and the demand for skills in systems engineering, software, and data analysis.

This week we are speaking to Dr Alkiviadis Boulos the Director of Engineering for BRUSA Elektronik. 

Alkiviadis’s engineering journey began as he gained a master’s in electrical Power Drives, and a master in Control Engineering. This foundation lead him to gaining a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering Management. 

Alkiviadis always had a passion for cars, but never imagined he would work in the automotive industry. While at university, a major partnership with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) led to his involvement with the company. When he first joined, JLR had only four models in its lineup. Once he began working in the field, he discovered a deep love for vehicle development and the industry. He found the work incredibly rewarding and enjoyed every moment, eventually staying with JLR for over 22 years.

We also talk about EV Charging, Wireless Charging, and the joys of working in the Automotive industry. 

Frank’s background is in electrical engineering, which he studied at the Technical University of Munich. In his final semester in 2010, he was fortunate that battery research was experiencing a resurgence at German universities, leading him to shift his focus from biomedical engineering to battery engineering. In addition to earning his diploma (the equivalent of a master’s degree), Frank went on to pursue a PhD in battery cell modelling, with a particular emphasis on aging behaviour and effects.

During his PhD studies, Frank Kindermann gained experience as a project manager and lecturer at TUM, but his industrial career is where he made his most significant impact. He began at AUDI as a Technical Project Lead in cell development, overseeing the coordination of all aspects of the process, from supplier management to internal progress and release reporting. 

In October 2022, Frank joined the European technical centre of NIO, a renowned Chinese premium EV manufacturer known for its battery-swapping technology. As Head of Battery System Europe, he has since built a team of over 10 people, overseeing battery hardware and software development projects across Europe.

We also talk about the changes we will see in the Automotive Industry, the external influences on the EV sector, and the importance of following your passion. 

This week we are speaking to Tudi Le Bleis, the Battery Management System Team leader at INVENOX. 

He has been a key member of development teams working on both prototypes and serial products. Alongside this, Tudi has extensive experience in customer communication and project leadership. 

Tudi’s skills have been used for some fantastic projects, including supporting the renewable energy sector by converting waves into energy, and separating the hydrogen and taking the hydrogen through a custom-built fuel cell system that would transmit this to electricity.

We also talk about why you should always keep on learning, the importance of trying new things, and the growing world of electric vehicles and their infrastructure.  

This week we are speaking to Alfred Engler, the Head of Chief Engineering at Liebherr-Electronics and Drives GmbH. 

Alfred is a veteran in the field of engineering, having nearly 30 years of experience under his belt. 

He has spent over 12 years at ISET e.V., primarily working on research projects, before joining Liebherr as the Head of Predevelopment and Advanced Technology. At the time, Liebherr-Electronics & Drives GmbH had no specific focus on renewable energy. Initially, his work involved optimizing and developing power electronics for the aerospace industry, with a focus on CO2-neutral aircraft.

Thanks to hard work and dedication, Alfred was then promoted to Head of Chief Engineering, where he advised on both Power Electronics (PE) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for grid systems and aircraft. This role expanded to include the development of electrical systems for construction machines, mining trucks, diggers, and ESS at various sites. In his current position, he is responsible for implementing processes and tools across all developments and projects. 

We also talk about the over reliance on IT Systems and the complications this can cause, updates in the power electronics sector, and the brilliance of Smart Converters. 

This week we are speaking to Mike Kireev, the Engineering Manager for Smart Charging at EVBox. 

Mike has had a long and fruitful career in the industry, as he was previously the Head of Product management for Embedded Software Platforms at ABB. 

He gives us a fantastic breakdown of his career journey, after University Mike began working as a software developer, focusing on database development. Due to Mikes hard work, he found himself as a    Senior developer, managing a small team of skilled engineers. Mike has continued to grow and develop since, slowly moving his way to being an industry expert. 

We also talk about Mikes passion for charging, smart charging, and all things energy management. 

This week we’re speaking to Stefano Marconi, the Head of Powertrain Controls at Bugatti-Rimac. 

Stefano has a brilliant track record, excelling even during his university days. Such a successful academic career led Stefano to Ferrari, in which he did 12 years in various engineering roles. Stefano has since moved over to Bugatti Rimac, to focus his talents on powertrain controls. 

He gives us some great advice, such as the importance of setting yourself targets, to help keep a clear vision of your gaols, and why being a “do-er” is so valuable in the workplace.

This week we're speaking to Dr Joachim Fox, the director of Safety and Cybersecurity at ZF Group. 

Joachim has had a brilliant career, spanning nearly 20 years. After gaining a PhD in Robotics and Mathematics, Joachim joined the sector as a manager of control engineering at Siemens. This saw him leading a small team of engineers, as they worked on an automotive brake-by-wire system, electrical motors, and adaptive belt load limiters. 

In his current role at ZF Group, Joachim has introduced a completely digitalised / governance safety system which helps ZF group see the complete project overview and it’s used across all sectors of the company, such as: Marines, Renewables, Automotive, Aerospace etc. 

Thanks to having so much hands on experience, Joachim gives some fantastic advice for young engineers such as the importance of continuously learning, why you should follow your passion, and how to identify when it’s a good time to switch roles.  

This week we speak to Andrew Johnston, the Director of Quality, Functional Safety and Cybersecurity (Acting) at Imagination Technologies. 

Andrew was the Senior Functional Safety & Cybersecurity Manager at Imagination Technologies during the time of his interview, but has since moved upwards. 

Not only does Andrew give some brilliant insights for younger engineers, we also discuss the growth in tech, changes in the industry, and the importance of not being afraid to ask questions. 

This week we are speaking to Yike Fang the Vehicle Cybersecurity Manager at Verne. 

Yike originally joined ZF, as she started her career as a systems engineer, this opened the door for her to become a cybersecurity engineer. 

From ZF, Yike picked up cyber, wanting to progress higher and wanting to take on more responsibility, which lead her to developing future solutions for shared autonomous mobility. This was a fantastic opportunity for a cyber engineer as it allowed Yike to work with various disciplines. 

We also talk about the importance of being open minded when it comes to work, the value of taking on new challenges, and why more women should enter the tech sector. 

This week we are speaking to Eray Canli, the Engineering Manager at Volocopter GmbH. 

Originally Eray studied physics at university, after finishing his degree, Eray moved onto working on a master’s with a focus on the Aerospace sector. This hard work led him to his first career at Andar, working on the electrification of aircraft systems in the Defence and Aerospace industry. 

This aerospace experience lead Eray to Volocopter, he was in the core team that developed some of their first aircrafts. As Eray contributed to the flight of two different blocks of aircrafts at Volocopter, all of which were compliant to EASA standards.

As well as his career, we also talk about some of Erays tech driven side projects, such as working with the blockchain, using 3D Printers, and the fun of breaking down and rebuilding electronics.

This week we speak to Matus Rakoci, the ePowerTrain Senior Manager at GarrettMotion. 

Matus has a strong passion for the automotive industry, stemming from his family having their own small automotive company, allowing him to develop his passion from a young age. 

Matus has a solid career history after spending the last 20 years working with mechatronics, with his hard work being recognised he was soon promoted to a team leader. 

We also talk about the importance of a good work / life balance, the developments within the ePowerTrain sector, and why we need more people to gain technical knowledge of the inverter and the motor.

This week we speak to Stephan Prufling, the Product Manager at AVL Software and Functions GmbH. 

He started his education at EMZ as a technical apprentice working on old house equipment, whilst training as a Mechatronics Engineer working on both a mixture of mechatronics & electronics. Stephan stuck with education, completing a master’s driven by his love of the hands-on technical projects. 

Stephans career started with AVL as he became a development engineer focused on Systems & Applications for the E-Drive department. The core responsibility was to collect requirements from a systems-level point of view. 

After 3 years, Stephan moved into product management on Battery Management Systems. Whilst he is located in the Systems Engineering department, he is mainly supporting product management activities. He gets to work closely with customers, discussing project sets such as the scope of work, delivery required from AVL and understand customer expectations. Stephan is also highly involved in R&D topics and evaluating the latest technologies/trends and how this can be beneficial for AVL such as wireless BMS. 

Alongsider Stephans career journey, we also talk about vehicle cyber security, the developments in vehicle Ai, and the innovations happening within the automotive industry.  

This week we are talking with Lorena Ugarte, the Chief System Engineer at eVersum mobility solutions. 

After spending 4 years working on a bachelor's degree in Spain, Lorena kick started her career by working for Indra Systems, designing the Air Traffic management systems. Lorena quickly picked up the technical aspects but moved to a more challenging role after not feeling technically fulfilled. 

We also discuss the risks and benefits of working with a start-up, the challenges faced by those working with EV industries, and why it’s OK to make mistakes.  

This episode we're speaking with Alex Gechis, the Head of Perception at Kopernikus Automotive. 

Alex's journey began with a master’s in mathematics, leading him to work on fascinating projects in Germany, including creating his own “robo car.” This innovation paved the way for his role at Kopernikus.

This week we spoke to Narcisa Madaras, the talented Head of Global Software House at Forvia Hella. 

She tells us about her journey of juggling being both a mother, and a working professional, as she deals with two teenage boys at home, and a team of over 130 members at Forvia Hella. 

Narcisa also gives a fantastic insight into her educational journey, working on an embedded systems degree in the early 2000s. The landscape for this type of engineering job was much different than it is now, especially in Romania where Narcisa is from, as there were so few automobile companies working within her country. That didn’t stop Narcisa however, and thanks to her hard work and dedication she gained a job with Siemens, kickstarting her engineering career.

In this episode, we were fortunate enough to get some time with Andreas Heim, the multi-talented vice president for technology and engineering at FLEX Automotive.

In this episode, we were lucky enough to speak to Kiran Devlukia, the Global Head Electrical & Electronic Integration CoE at Tata Technologies.

He runs us through his engineering journey, from humble beginnings in a UK comprehensive school with over 1,000 students to the position he’s in today. 

Kiran talks to us about the good habits, and good choices he’s made that have helped fuel his success, including working with Lotus thanks to a graduate scheme. 

We also look into the gradual shifts in roles that Kiran has gone through, and the valuable experience he has gained through working with so many varied engineering companies.

We got time in with Nitish Sundarasan, the hardworking Head of Connected Cockpit at Automobili Pininfarina. Nitish has had an interesting engineering journey, hitting milestones such as designing and engineering his own car whilst at university. 

Initially starting as a product architect for Automobili Pinifarina, Nitish’s constant pushing for better has helped him climb to department head in just 4 years. Listen to this weeks episode to learn more about his journey. 

This week we spoke to the talented Dr Fabio Dohr, the On-site Head of Platform Portfolio Electric Vehicle Drives for ZF Group. 

Dr Dohrs gives us insight to his working experience, from his contributions to the optimisation of the BMW transmission systems, to the new world of simulation testing. 

Whilst Dr Dohr has been at the same company for the majority of his working career, it doesn’t mean he is without experience, as he explains to us how he moved through the company thanks to his hunger for learning and a proactive can-do attitude.
