We took a different approach by watching the Season 2 Buffy finale together and recording our discussion in real time. Melanie performs some excellent fight scene analysis and Sean points out a fishy connection between this episode and the previous episode, "Go Fish".

Sean and Melanie open this episode by talking about how they both live close to the beach, but rarely go there. They also touch on going to the beach as kids and their experiences playing competitive sports in school.  

Swimming through the plot of the Buffy episode "Go Fish", Melanie and Sean point out the plethora of guest starts in this episode. Melanie continues her protest of Prinicpal Snyder taking advantage of Willow's willingness to teach her peers and Sean expresses his concerns with the "toxicology lab" references (do your research people!)

Melanie and Sean take on ghosts and spookiness in entertainment, including the movies Ghost and Poltergeist (still slightly scarred by that movie.) They also touch on the OG Ghostbusters, Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project and discuss the concept of a Sadie Hawkins dance and how "promposals" have gotten outrageous. 

In our haunted conversation about the Buffy episode "I Only Have Eyes for You", Melanie shares a personal anecdote about receiving a rose quartz, similar to what Willow gave to Giles. Sean and Melanie perform an in-depth analysis of the inside of Xander's locker - the contents are somewhat concerning. Sean questions the proper spelling of snakalicious/snakealicious.

Melanie and Sean remember the times that they've been hospitalized, including how a back massager recently sent Melanie to the ER and a waterslide led to a concussion. Sean recounts his ambulance ride after an unfortunate bowling injury and a potential anesthesia overdose as a child.

While diagnosing the Buffy episode "Killed by Death", Sean provides a connection between Der Kinderstod and the recent Halloween movies.  Melanie has some strong opinions about Der Kinderstod's eye stalks (and the recycling of the related stop animation footage.)

Melanie and Sean open this episode by discussing stalking, their experience with it, and portrayal of stalking in movies and TV (remember Fatal Attraction and Single White Female?)

After a brief tangent regarding the unusual late 90s soap opera "Passions" they focus on the Buffy episode "Passion". Melanie points out how hypocritical Joyce is being towards Buffy and questions the legality of Willow teaching her fellow students. Sean drops a bit of knowledge connecting a song from Ed Sheeran's X album to the music in this episode and we say farewell to a recurring character.

Sean and Melanie dig into this episode, dealing with werewolves, by discussing their past and present pet dogs! Melanie shares her husband's future plans for having a pack of dogs and Sean reveals the one thing that Melanie's dogs do with him that they don't do with her. 

Unleashing their thoughts regarding the Buffy episode "Phases", Melanie is enamored with the opening scene and the throwback to Season 1. This episode's snack discussion centers around the weird marshmallow filling in Moon Pies and Peeps (gross.) Sean compares the locker room scene between Larry and Xander to a scene from Glee and Melanie questions the sudden bond between Cordelia and Willow.

Melanie and Sean look back at the first half of Season 2 - comparing it to the first season, and how the show has progressed. While discussion the newer characters in this season, they go off on a brief tangent to discuss Danny Strong (who plays Jonathan) and his current screenwriting career and accolades, including several Emmys!

Navigating the aftermath of betrayal in the Buffy episode "Innocence", Sean wonders what was actually being produced in the factory that has become Spike and Drusilla's lair. Melanie questions the career of the random woman in the alley that approaches Angel (and how Angel can smoke when he has no breath??) Sean and Melanie also express appreciation of Willow and Oz's emotional maturity.

Sean and Melanie start this episode off remembering their times as teenagers -  heading to the mall on Friday night to check out the posters, playing with the plasma ball at Spencer's, and fiddling with the gadgets at Brookstone. 

Indulging in the sweet chaos of the Buffy episode "Band Candy" Sean points out how Joyce and Giles were wolfing down the chocolate in their confrontation scene with Buffy.  Melanie questions the point of Angel in this episode, expresses her distaste with the Willow/Xander story arc, and wonders if the Bronze actually serves alcohol.

Sean and Melanie open this episode discussing their experiences with surprise parties - how difficult it is to keep them secret and when each of them have been surprised in the past. Sean recounts the interesting theme for his 30th birthday party and Melanie describes what she did to make her 40th birthday party unique (hint - it involves a bounce house.)

Amidst the balloons and streamers, Melanie and Sean analyze the Buffy episode "Surprise", including a review of the varied filmography of Vincent Schiavelli, who played Jenny's uncle. Along with providing the Judge his very own theme song, Melanie points out where we've seen the actor who plays him before and Sean highlights how suspicious Jenny is being in this episode.

Sean and Melanie tackle a very controversial topic - eggs! They divulge their go-to egg orders, discuss eggs in cinema, and reveal their opinions on caviar. There's also conversation about sex-ed classes and hearing the dreaded phrase in school "Choose a partner" and the anxiety that follows. 

Eggsploring the details of the Buffy episode "Bad Eggs", they review the events  occurring at the Sunnydale Mall and discuss their favorite mall food court foods. Sean recalls the store in the mall where he first heard his favorite band while  Melanie can't get enough of Lyle and Tector Gorch and their authentic Texan accents. Joyce continues her campaign for worst mother ever.

Sean and Melanie begin this one by discussing their experiences with single parents dating, since they both are children of separated parents - hear how they dealt with meeting the significant others of each of their fathers.

In the circuit of conversation surrounding the Buffy episode "Ted", Melanie provides an OUTSTANDING rendition of Captain and Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and they recall watching Three's Company in their younger days. Sean reveals his theory of what causes a stake to either dissolve into ash or stay whole and highlights the inaccuracies of Joyce attempting to take Ted's pulse after his tumble. Melanie comments on the unfortunate victim shaming that occurs at the police station, and there's a lot of Joyce-bashing (she's pretty horrible to Buffy in this episode.)

Inspired by Kendra's intriguing accent, Melanie and Sean discuss their experiences in Jamaica, the Caribbean and on cruises - favorite excursions, pier runners, and rum punch are some of the highlights.

Reviewing the plot of the Buffy episode "What's My Line Part 2" Melanie schools Sean on the existence of the "raisin" color in cosmetics (which led to a tangent about raisins). Melanie expresses how Drusilla is quickly becoming her favorite character. Sean runs through the filmography of Bianca Lawson (who played Kendra) and since they always enjoy discussing snacks, there's a quick conversation about animal crackers. Before wrapping up, Melanie asks about the concept of potential slayers and how they become "activated", which is more proof that she is getting hooked into this show!

Melanie and Sean discuss their careers - what they wanted to be as kids, what jobs they've had, and where they are at now. The jobs they ended up with were very different than what they thought they'd be as kids! 

Analyzing the intricacies of the Buffy episode "What's my Line Part 1", Melanie poses the question of what career Buffy could have along with being the slayer and does a great impression of Drusilla's whimper. Sean compares the Order of Taraka to The Three from Season 1 and also provides an impression, his being a line from Kendra.

After a brief interlude to discuss TikTok addiction and Smartfood caramel cheddar popcorn, they reflect on the events of the Buffy Episode "The Dark Age". Melanie fondly remembers step-aerobics in the 90s and Sean points out the numerous inaccuracies during the blood delivery scene in the hospital parking lot. Sean shares the unusual question he'd ask Anthony Stewart Head if he ever gets to meet him and Melanie brings us back to the 70s with an Electra Woman and Dyna Girl reference.

We're headed to the club! Sean and Melanie discuss their clubbing experiences, including goth clubs, 80s-themed clubs, and a club with a rotating dance floor. 

Sinking their teeth into the vampire fan club from the Buffy episode "Lie to Me", Sean provides a rundown of Jason Behr's many WB/CW appearances. Melanie questions the usefulness of a bomb shelter that can only be opened from the outside, and they both express their gratitude that they no longer have to carry a pager or be on-call for work.

Cackling over the events of the Buffy episode, "Halloween", Sean comments on Angel's colorful outfit (it's so wrong!) and ponders if, for once, Principal Snyder actually acted like a good principal when he organized the kids' trick-or-treating event. Melanie points out the plethora of back rooms and caverns in Sunnydale homes and businesses (Florida doesn't have basements so we're a little jealous.)

Sean and Melanie start this one off by describing their first experiences with alcohol and their favorite inebriated interactions. From Melanie having a sloe gin fizz in international waters to Sean's epic holiday party with Maple Crown Royal, there have been many drinks consumed. 

Along with their funny drinking stories, they do discuss some of the more serious topics of the Buffy episode "Reptile Boy". But, they balance the seriousness with humor - Melanie does a great impression of Cordelia's fake laughter and Sean makes a connection between Buffy, Days of our Lives. and Supernatural.

After completing the snack food conversation (which could have lasted all episode), they chew over the events of the Buffy episode "Inca Mummy Girl". Sean points out that yet another student was left behind during a field trip and shares his appreciation of the shirt Oz wears in his first scene. Melanie points out a connection between this episode and the Twilight movies and expresses her opinion on Oz's facial hair.

Diving into the high stakes (get it?) competition of the Buffy episode "Homecoming," Melanie expresses her distastes in a Willow and Xander plotline. Sean questions the feasibility of an orchid corsage, and they both go down IMDB rabbit holes for the several guest stars in this episode.

In this episode, Sean and Melanie delve deep into the  third episode of Buffy season two, "School Hard". They unravel Buffy's complex relationship with her mother, Joyce, and discuss how our parents were involved in our own education. Did our elementary schools really have us knocking on neighbors' doors to sell wrapping paper and collect donations for read-a-thons?

Principal Snyder's unconventional approach to school administration is discussed, pondering how he got his job given his questionable motives and decisions. As Spike and Drusilla make their menacing entrance, Sean and Melanie analyze their characters and interactions with the already established cast. From fashion choices to linguistic mishaps, there's a little something for everyone in this episode of The Sunnydale Diaries!

Melanie and Sean take on science fairs in this episode - hear about the projects they created and experiments they took part in (and some of the disasters that ensued.) 

Diving into the events of the Buffy episode "Some Assembly Required", Melanie provides instruction on the proper way to eat a powdered donut. Sean expresses his dissatisfaction with Angel wearing beige, and they both question why so many bad events at Sunnydale High happen in the Science Lab.

They review the impressive filmography of Clea DuVall (who played Marcie in this episode) and discuss a few times in their own lives when they felt invisible. 

During discussion of the Buffy Episode "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", Sean points out what early 90s movie people may know Mercedes McNab (Harmony) from. Melanie drops some knowledge on what the "Twinkie Defense" is and they acknowledge that Cordelia may be turning over a new leaf (not to be confused with the cabbage leaf toupee also discussed.) In this episode, Sean and Melanie discuss their own talent show experiences and moments on stage, including tap dancing to Wham and playing commercial jingles live. There's discussions about their favorite puppets (spanning decades from the 50s to today) and a lot of random bursting into song.

While walking through the Buffy episode "The Puppet Show", Sean compares Sid the Dummy to Mr. Game Show, an electronic toy from the late 80s. Melanie shares her thoughts on seeing Principal Snyder for the first time, and they both question the organization of the Sunnydale High Library. This episode deals with several technological firsts - the first computers Melanie and Sean ever owned, first times on the internet, and first email addresses. It's also the first time a scene in Buffy made Melanie pause the show and walk away for 5 minutes!

This episode of The Sunnydale Diaries has it all! Sean and Melanie discuss their first loves, then jump into Buffy episode 7 - "Angel". Melanie and Sean start this episode off on a serious note, discussing the xenophobia in the portrayal of African and Maori mythology present in the Buffy episode "The Pack". They share their experience with bullying in middle and high school before moving on to the more lighthearted topic of school spirit (which involves Melanie in a penguin costume.)

As they get further into "The Pack" they touch on a variety of topics including geometry, croissants at the bronze (seriously what kind of club is this?) and how much of a jerk hyena-Xander was. There's also mourning of Prinicpal Flutie and Herbert, the Sunnydale High pig mascot. Although this episode starts with a significant topic, there's also a lot of laughter throughout. We're halfway through Season 1!

It's always fun when Melanie gets to do her "It was the 90s!" jingle more than once and that happens in this week's episode! Melanie and Sean describe their first dates (both memorable and not so memorable) then review the Buffy episode "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date."

Melanie questions if the Master is really a threat to Sunnydale and what kind of club the Bronze actually is, considering they've had tea and muffins on hand recently. Sean compares a vampire getting thrown into a creamator to a cookie baking mishap he experienced, and asks why people in their mid 20s keep getting casted to play high school students.

Since the Buffy episode "Teacher's Pet" focuses on a new teacher at Sunnydale High, Melanie and Sean discuss teachers from their past: teachers who had an impact, teachers they had a crush on, and for which teachers they still hold a grudge. They also question the existence of school permanent records (has anyone actually seen theirs?)

Examination of "Teacher's Pet" leaves us with some unanswered questions:

• What was in Cordelia's medically prescribed lunch? 
• Can a praying mantis actually tie a knot?
• In the last scene, where in the classroom were those eggs?

Episode 3 of "The Sunnydale Diaries" is here and all about witches! Melanie and Sean review the infamous cherries scene from "The Witches of Eastwick," the unforgettable "Top That" rap from "Teen Witch," and the eerie room of heads in "Return to Oz."

While examining the Buffy episode "The Witch", Melanie shares her not-so-fond memories of driver's ed, Sean analyzes a chemical reaction, and the correct pronunciation of hyperbole, mitochondria, and subterfuge are discussed (hint, the last one involves fudge!)

We made it to a second episode! Before discussing The Harvest, Sean and Melanie discuss their exposure to vampires in books, movies and television - everything from Once Bitten to Blade. Welcome to The Sunnydale Diaries - a podcast where two friends watch every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sean, who has loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer for years, and Melanie, who is yet to be convinced how great the show is, open each podcast discussing a theme central to the Buffy episode they are watching. Sean and Melanie start this episode with a conversation about jealousy and envy - both in their personal lives, and at work. Melanie recounts a time when they worked together and she thought they would grow apart because Sean took a leadership position (spoiler, they didnt!) 

As they explore the new players in the Buffy episode "Faith, Hope, and Trick" (Melanie doesn't like that title) Sean points out a scary looking fast food mascot and a very large stake. Melanie comments on Buffy's zig-zag part, Kakistos' hooves, and Faith's tattoo.

Melanie and Sean kickoff Season 3 with discussions about the first day of school - they recall their first days of college, shopping for back to school clothes, and the anxiety of starting a new school. There's also a quick conversation about runaways.

Exploring the fresh start in the Buffy episode "Anne", Sean points out a t-shirt that Oz and Xander apparently share and lets out some rage during the scene in the "blood bank". Melanie ponders the type of financial fraud Joyce is committing while writing out a check. Giles breaks out his light pen again in the library for the first day of school.

We're back with another Scooby Snacks episode! This time around we're tasting various marshmallow foods, inspired by Xander's Moon Pie comment in the Buffy episode "Phases". We've got fluffernutter sandwiches, smores bark, Hostess Snowballs and a few other snacks. Our tastings led to comments like: "There should not be crunch in my marshmallow" "I bought these because they sounded truly offensive."  "I'm OK never having one of those in my mouth again."
