Fear Unlocked: What Your Mind Doesn’t Want You to Know24 Mar 202500:22:24

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM665_Fear_Unlocked_What_Your_Mind_Doesn_t_Want_You_to_Know.mp3

Ready to unlock the truth about fear? In this episode, I reveal why everything you’ve been told about fear is based on an illusion called “negative faith.” What if I told you that the fears holding you back aren’t actually yours? What if these borrowed beliefs are the very thing stopping you from achieving the success you desire?

Fear Unlocked

Most people don’t realize they were only born with two natural fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Everything else? It’s programmed. But here’s the key: what’s programmed can be unlocked and rewritten. Throughout this episode, I break down how our environment shapes our fears and why most limitations are simply learned responses that no longer serve us.

Breaking the Pattern

Through real-world examples and surprising revelations, I uncover the mechanics behind fear-based thinking. You’ll discover how whole families, communities, and even societies have been crippled by false ideas rooted in fear. Additionally, I share a powerful story about someone who avoided wealth their entire life because of borrowed beliefs about money.

In this episode, I explain:

  • The true source of your fears (hint: they’re not yours)

  • Why wealthy people see money differently

  • How to spot and break fear-based programming

  • The difference between fear as an alert system versus a paralysis mechanism
Your Power Unlocked

Discover the simple yet powerful shift that lets you see both sides of every situation and choose your response consciously. In fact, the greatest power you possess is your ability to choose. Let me show you practical techniques for redirecting your faith energy toward growth instead of limitation. By understanding the law of polarity, you’ll learn how every situation contains equal amounts of positive and negative—and why your focus determines your reality.

The Wealth Code: Rewiring Your Money Identity17 Mar 202500:21:12

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM664_The_Wealth_Code_Rewiring_Your_Money_Identity.mp3

In this episode, I decode the hidden programming keeping millions trapped in financial mediocrity. Your relationship with money isn’t just about dollars in your account—it’s about the wealth identity encoded in your subconscious mind.

Your Divine Inheritance

Rich people never “work for money”—instead, they operate from a creator identity that builds wealth-generating systems. Your financial DNA contains untapped wealth potential that remains dormant until activated. Many remain loyal to family money programming that unconsciously sabotages their prosperity. Understanding your divine inheritance provides access to unlimited abundance that’s your natural birthright.

Ever notice how lottery winners often end up broke? Through my journey from financial struggle to prosperity, I discovered that money problems aren’t solved by money—they’re solved by rewiring your money identity. I provide the exact blueprint for shedding the working-class identity keeping you trapped and stepping into your natural state of wealth consciousness.

Rewire Your Money Identity

Begin by decoding the money programming running in your background since childhood. Next, activate your creator identity by embracing your divine wealth potential. Implement immediate wealth-building actions regardless of current circumstances. Finally, design automated prosperity systems that free you from trading time for dollars.

Sales Influence Without Manipulation13 Jan 202500:16:20

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM655_MDM_Dec18_24.mp3

Discovering sales influence without manipulation is the cornerstone of authentic business success. Throughout this powerful episode, we challenge traditional sales approaches that rely on pressure tactics. As a result, we reveal why true influence emerges from personal transformation rather than manipulation.

The Problem with Traditional Sales Training

Most sales training programs teach manipulation-based techniques. However, achieving sales influence without manipulation requires a fundamentally different approach. Moreover, when salespeople unconsciously share the same limiting beliefs as their prospects, they lack the authentic influence needed to create transformation. Consequently, this episode explores how to break free from this common trap and develop genuine sales influence.

Essential Insights for Authentic Sales Success

In this transformative discussion, we explore several critical elements of authentic influence:

  • Why parallel belief systems between seller and prospect block authentic influence
  • How being stuck in survival mode prevents transformational sales
  • The critical difference between making a purchase and committing to change
  • Breaking conventional rules for sales breakthrough
  • Speaking to the unconscious mind of ideal clients
  • The direct connection between personal growth and sales influence
  • Why chasing recognition blocks authentic influence
  • Attracting ideal clients through genuine transformation
Real-World Proof: A Revealing Case Study

Furthermore, we examine a compelling case study: From a group of 200+ salespeople who underwent the same high-level training in 1999, only one person built lasting success. Through this example, you’ll discover the crucial mindset difference that made it possible – specifically, a commitment to authentic influence rather than manipulation.

The Path to True Sales Transformation

Therefore, the key to influential selling isn’t about pressure tactics or manipulation. Instead, it’s about becoming someone who has done the inner work, embraced transformation, and can authentically guide others toward their desired future outcomes.

The Best of 2022 – Part I26 Dec 202200:34:15
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_564_Best_of_2022_Part_I.mp3

In this 2-part series, we’re bringing you excerpts from the very best of The Successful Mind Podcast this past year. These include some of our most-downloaded episodes, as well as some of our favorite picks.  If any of these jump out at you, you may want to revisit the full episode. We’ve provided links to each below. Enjoy the show!

[1:17]

Episode 453: How to Trust Yourself in the Year Ahead

Every year, millions of people set a New Year’s resolution and don’t do a damn thing with it. When you say you’re going to do something—and you don’t do it—you’re doing damage to your own psychology. You train your mind to believe it’s okay to break trust with yourself. This develops into develop a pattern to where your mind doesn’t trust you.

[5:15]

Episode 464: Rewire your Mind: The Quality of Your Life Equals the Quality of Your Decisions

Anytime you need to do something you don’t want to do in order to reach a goal, you must mentally associate something good or positive to that activity. This will allow you to manifest your goal much quicker.

[6:25]

Episode 465: The Power of Will

When Will Smith was young, his dad taught him and his brother how to build a brick wall. This was slow, grueling work that overwhelmed them. His dad taught him not to focus on the wall, but to focus on laying each brick perfectly. This gave Will a life lesson about persistence, discipline, focus, and goals.

[9:39]

Episode 476: The Desire to Succeed

Whenever a person is struggling or they fail, it’s usually because doubt got into their mind. Whenever doubt creeps into your mind, it attacks what you’re thinking about. Doubt is like a virus. It changes how you’re thinking about something. We start to believe the doubt and get emotionally involved with it.

If you want to reach your vision and goals, and carry out your plan—you must protect your mind from doubt.

[11:49]

Episode 478: Everything is Preparing You for Something Greater

How you meet current challenges will determine how prepared you are for future challenges. I never liked the idea that “God tests people and you have to be prepared to pass the test.” However, I do believe the challenges we experience are preparing us for something bigger and better down the road.

[14:24]

Episode 492: Passion is an Inside Job

People often look in the wrong places to find what they love. We’re programmed to believe we need to “find our passion,” “find our purpose,” or “find something we enjoy doing,” so we can love our work. But this idea keeps people blind to it their whole life.

The truth is, you can decide to change your attitude. Instead of looking at everything through a filter of hate, you can show up in a state of joy, love, and passion to whatever you’re doing. When you do this, you’ll be led right to the thing.

[19:10]

Episode 495: A Conversation with Quan Huynh

I interviewed Quan Huynh about his experience in prison, and how he realized that he didn’t have to view prison as a punishment. Instead, he could view it as an opportunity to remake himself into a better person, while helping other men to do the same. He says the universe’s answer back to him was “Yes.” So he started to go in that positive direction.

For the first time, he began hearing the sparrows chirp. They were probably chirping during his whole person term, but he never heard them until that moment.

[21:34]

Episode 503: Nice is Not a Value

Being “nice” is not a value. Being kind is a value. Being nice is one of the biggest con jobs that people do to themselves and each other. It’s basically the idea that no matter how you feel, you must be nice. And you must trust someone who’s being nice.

Neither of these behaviors are healthy. They can do damage in a person’s life. Trusting someone who’s nice can make you accept someone’s opinion or expertise, without question. And that’s dangerous.

[23:56]

Episode 504: Acres of Wisdom from The Biggest Little Farm

Steph had a strong emotional reaction while watching the documentary, “The Biggest Little Farm.” It’s not a sad documentary—it’s a feel-good documentary. Having grown up with many great memories of being a child on a farm, Steph was amazed at how the documentary reflected universal truths in every aspect—including the law of cause and effect, and the law of polarity.

[27:56]

Episode 516: Sixty: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones have been around for over 60 years, which is an unbelievable accomplishment. The band was formed in 1962, around the same time that the Beatles started to rise.

If you go back to their roots, The Rolling Stones were “blues” guys. In their first albums, they were trying to be the next Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. Eventually. they created their own interpretation of that music. Despite popular belief, they never had a chip on their shoulder about The Beatles. They were friends with them in real life. Their fans created a persona in which they were the rival of The Beatles.

[30:47]

Episode 518: Do You Want to Know the Truth or Do You Want to be Right?

Whenever you get stuck—to the point where you can’t seem to move forward, come to a resolution, or know which decision to make—this indicates that you would rather be right than know the truth. A person will stay stuck if they don’t want to know the truth and if they have a need to be right. This need comes from the ego. It usually stems from childhood as a method of self-preservation.

If you understand how to think, you can move yourself through this. Whether you ask for help or not, you must start training yourself to get to the answer. Otherwise, you’ll never make any progress forward. Let go of what’s untrue about the situation, so you can move to the truth.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful year. We look forward to bringing you even more great content in 2023!

How to Navigate Holiday Gatherings19 Dec 202200:37:37
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_563_Holiday_Boundaries.mp3

Are you prepared to navigate holiday gatherings this season? During this time of year, Steph and I get tons of questions on how to deal with family, boundaries, and heated conversations.

Clients will often ask: “How can I stay in an abundance mindset when I’m surrounded by parents and extended family who have different beliefs than me?” “How do I talk with my family about my business?” “How do I not get triggered?”

Most of us love our families and want to connect with them during the holidays. Being around different energy dynamics can be challenging, especially while traveling.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • How people in tend to put each other in a box—where they expect you to be a certain way

  • How your parents and grandparents see you the same way they saw you as a child—through the lens of the limitations, behaviors, and emotions you had as a kid

  • How I observed my family having the same conversations year after year—and the story of how my mom negatively reacted after I bought her a Christmas gift that she said she wanted

  • Why family members judge you and get triggered by who you’re becoming (hint: whenever you change, you force others around you to change, because they have to adapt to your change)

  • How comments like “Must be nice” are passive aggressive—and what you can do to change the conversation to something more positive

  • Why Steph refuses to ask her husband how his day was, and what she asks instead

  • How to navigate holiday gatherings like a champ with simple strategies

Steph shares 3 conversation starters that can help you learn more about your family and connect with them on a deeper level:

1) If you could relive a past year of your life because it was so good—which year would you re-live, and why?

2) What are you most excited about in your life right now?

3) What are you grateful that you never have to do again?

BT also shares his 3 “no fail” steps to take if you want to avoid minefields this holiday:

1) Have no expectations.

2) Be flexible.

3) Use the S.T.O.P. Strategy.

An Inside View on the Netflix Documentary Stutz12 Dec 202200:47:52

**Spoiler Alert:

This Episode Contains Massive Spoilers**

Jonah Hill recently released the Netflix documentary Stutz, in which he has a vulnerable conversation with his therapist Phil Stutz. The documentary is Jonah’s attempt to honor his therapist’s life, while also sharing his tools and demonstrating a real-life therapy session .

Within the first 20 minutes of the film, something feels off. Jonah comes clean with the audience, admitting that up until that point, they’ve spent two years trying to film the session. Jonah then shifts into vulnerability , which makes the rest of the documentary much more authentic .

Jonah & Phil Stutz don’t have a typical patient . But in this case, their relationship helped both of them heal dramatically.

In this episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • The surprise twists that happen in the documentary—and “the big reveal” that takes place within the first 20 minutes that hooks you in and anchors you into what’s going on

    • What stood out for both Steph and me about the film

    • How therapists are trained to just sit across from someone and listen to their problems without interrupting or giving advice (and why Stutz says this is brutal)

    • The tools Stutz gives to Jonah that seriously helped him in life, which anyone can use to quickly shift how they’re feeling

    • How Stutz and Jonah both lost a brother—and how that experience completely disrupted Stutz’s life

    • The three things that humans will always have—pain, uncertainty, and having to do the work

    • How mistakes and pain are leading the way

Jonah and his therapist developed one hell of a relationship . I see it as kind of a love story  that turned out to be a healing journey  for both of them.

It shows that nobody has life all figured out —not even therapists. Everyone’s on a path of constant work, which means constant growth.

I highly recommend you watch this documentary and pay attention to what jumps out at you as you watch it.

Is Bragging in Business Bad?05 Dec 202200:42:55
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_561_Bragging_in_Business.mp3

In our Elite Mind 365 program, we did a marketing workshop with our students. Steph taught them a strategy called the “client win” email strategy where you share stories of your clients’ wins.

Interestingly, this idea was met with a lot of resistance. Our students had a hard time accepting the idea of sharing their clients’ success stories, because they were afraid to come across as bragging.

For many people growing up middle class, it wasn’t okay to talk about how good you are or to brag about anything. You were actually supposed to hide the things you were good at. This exactly is why many business owners keep themselves hidden today. Even on their websites, very few people have testimonials above the fold. This is another way to stay hidden, small, and safe.

Celebrating your wins and sharing them with the right people can actually be a growth experience. And sharing your client wins is one of the most effective forms of marketing to grow your business.

In this episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • Why social proof is the most effective form of marketing—because people can identify with the stories by saying, “I want that,” or “I don’t want that,” which then justifies their purchase
    • How showcasing how you help people allows others to see possibility for themselves
    • How many people didn’t get celebrated in their life as a kid growing up—instead, they were shamed, guilted, ostracized, and ridiculed for outshining others
    • How the feeling of being confused indicates you’re in self-sabotage (a strategy your subconscious mind uses to keep you exactly where you are)
    • Why I believe we must continually work on our self-esteem, or society will rip it apart
    • Steph’s experience shopping on Amazon for a donut pan that had 19,000 reviews

When it comes to your products or services, you always want people to say, “Yes, I want that,” or “No, I don’t want that.” You never want them to be stuck in the middle, saying, “I don’t know what I want.”

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t want to self-promote; I don’t want to brag; I don’t want to seem conceited”…this episode is for you!

Plus, Steph, BT, and I chat about our favorite donuts and how the industry makes a ‘hole’ lot of money annually.

The Secret to Closing More Sales28 Nov 202200:39:56
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_560-The_Secret_Behind_More_Sales.mp3

If you want to know the secret to closing more sales and have a consistent stream of income, you need to turn sales into a discipline—an ongoing process and habit in your business.

Inconsistent sales is a systemic problem. It reflects your mindset, urgency level, and skillset around sales. It also reflects your marketing and marketing cycle. Some businesses have a short marketing cycle, while others don’t see sales until 3-6 months after they’ve completed a marketing campaign. You need to know your market and your metrics in order to understand your marketing cycle.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How business owners get too comfortable, drag their feet, and delay in setting up systems and hiring the right people (which would create consistency in sales)
    • How people take their foot off the gas because they get distracted—and this shows up in their sales one, two, or three months down the road
    • Why you should know how to do sales yourself, before you bring on a salesperson
    • The two most important skills in sales—listening and knowing what questions to ask
    • Why you should shut up during a sales conversation—and after the person answers your question, you should ask them another question

Salespeople are the highest paid profession in the world. If you’re a competent sales person, there’s no limit to how much money you can earn.

Sales is a skill that involves listening, being quiet, quieting the voice in your mind with all the chatter going on—so you can really be present and hear what this person is telling you, and then be able to think through a response that’s adequate for moving them in the direction of “yes” or “no.

It takes discipline to keep the sales machine running. Dan Kennedy said that every day, you should do at least one activity that is a future sales-generating activity. Close a sale every day. Turn this into a habit in your business.

Advice is Too Cheap21 Nov 202200:43:53
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_559-Advice_is_Too_Cheap.mp3

Advice is cheap and rampant on social media today. Many coaches and consultants are giving advice on things they’re not qualified to speak on. They’re not demonstrating results in those areas. They have no experience in what they’re speaking on, and they’re trying to teach on things they’ve never implemented, tried, tested, or used themselves. This is why advice is cheap.

The truth is, advice isn’t worth anything unless you raise your standard and change your mindset—so you can actually use the advice.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How people ask for advice and expect the person they’re asking o agree with their problem and come down to their level—but the truth is, you have to climb the ladder of achievement and discipline to rise up to THEIR level
    • How our childhood affects our ability to distinguish between good advice and bad advice
    • How making the wrong decisions in business and relationships can cause a lot of pain
    • Why we teach our clients to look at life through the lens of what they want to build and create for their future vision
    • A nasty experience I had years ago where I lost $5 million AND my email lis, because I wouldn’t spend $1300 to pay a lawyer to review a contract (I thought I could read it myself)
    • Steph’s experience losing $100k when she tried to create a software program that nobody wanted—she didn’t do any market research, didn’t have an agreement with her developer, and went in blind, thinking she could do it all herself

Communication can be so painful for people, especially in business—to say what you want to say, ask for what you need, or ask for clarity. People are so afraid of what others will think of them—they end up giving their power away instead of asking for help and getting the correct advice.

The Hidden Meaning Behind Complaining14 Nov 202200:46:39
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_558-The_Hidden_Meaning_Behind_Complaining.mp3

If you pay attention, you’ll start to notice that most people complain about everything. Business owners complain about their team, workload, and clients. Parents complain about their kids. Wives complain about their husbands leaving socks on the floor. While traveling, people will complain about the flight, the Uber, the hotel check-in process, or the dinner they ate last night.

Complaining is a form of communication. People do it for many reasons—to bond and connect, to feel important or significant because they have low self-esteem, or to be seen as valuable . It may be a part of the culture that someone grew up in. Why do we complain so much? And what’s behind this?

In this episode, we discuss:

    • The difference between a complaint and verbalizing a problem—complaining has a griping, whiny energy to it; whereas verbalizing a problem allows you to find a solution and change it
    • How complaining makes you fail to see an opportunity that’s right in front of you
    • How complaining is a safe way to start a conversation with a stranger
    • Why you shouldn’t assume that people who complain actually want to change or solve their problem
    • How complaining puts you in the energy of what you DON’T want, by causing you to focus on everything you DON’T want
    • Why you should you never speak anything into existence that you don’t wish to be in your life
    • How to redirect yourself from complaining to getting your needs met

Plus, we discuss how our team is doing a 21-day challenge based on the book, A Complaint Free World by Will Bowen.

Everything we say or do is based on a frequency or a vibration. Complaining pushes growth away, due to the Law of Vibration. So, I challenge you to go 21 days without complaining about anything. Think about how many times you’ve complained in the last 24 hours. Do this challenge with your spouse, partner, and/or team members.

This all just comes down to effective communication —and being able to ask for what you want in a specific way.

Entrepreneurial Maturity07 Nov 202200:43:47
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_557-Entrepreneurial_Maturity.mp3

Today we’re talking about a topic that isn’t discussed very often—entrepreneurial maturity. Entrepreneurs who are immature get frustrated, emotionally triggered, and experience “high highs” and “low lows” in response to their results. Because of their lack of maturity, they miss out on so much opportunity. They start to rely on hope as a strategy for business growth. (i.e., “I hope this works.”)

When an immature entrepreneur doesn’t get the results they want in business, they take it as rejection. They give up and move on to the next thing. They create a story about “why I’m not good enough.” They don’t sit with the problem long enough to look at what’s causing it and what needs to change.

By contrast, the mature business owner will sit with a problem objectively and ask, “Why didn’t we get the result we wanted? What do we need to change?”

Entrepreneurial maturity means you won’t quit until you find an answer, or until you hit your goal. Mature entrepreneurs will do a focus group, survey their database, ask for help, or do whatever it takes to truly solve the problem. They’ll ask, “Where did we miss the mark?”

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How immature entrepreneurs engage in “all or nothing,” fatalistic thinking — where they believe, “No one will buy from me” or “I’m not good enough”
    • How many businesses were started because the owner had an immature intention to begin with
    • How asking a different questions can make you see your problem differently, so that you can actually solve it
    • Why relentlessness and persistence are so important in business
    • The story of how Steph’s daughter, Bailey, wanted to catch a fish—and she didn’t quit until she caught a trout. Even as a child, she sought the information needed to figure out how to make it work.
    • How you create and recreate the same problems in your business, because of your belief and how you’re viewing the problems

Plus, we share an enlightening exercise that will help you separate yourself from the problem, and the meaning you’ve given to the problem.

What type of leader are you?

Click Here to take our Visionary Leadership Assessment!

On today’s bonus episode, David & Steph talk about the importance of being a visionary leader & what it means for the growth of your business. They also launch a newly designed assessment tool created by Life is Now Inc. that helps you determine which type of leader you are.

Full Transcript

Steph

So I’m really excited today.

David

Tell me about it.

Steph

Well, you know about it, but I’ll tell you about it anyway, because we’re on this podcast. Big day for us. Yesterday we launched a new website, we launched new branding, and we launched a brand new tool.

David

That is exciting.

Steph

I’m so proud of it. You know, it’s fun to create something and just be so proud of what you created because you know that it’s going to make a difference in people’s lives. So for quite a while now, David and I have been having high level conversations about leadership. Because our goal is to help leaders, because we know that when we help leaders of companies, that trickles down into their team and that trickles down into our team’s families, and it creates a ripple effect, right?

David

Yeah, for sure. Synergy, productivity, the whole thing like explosions in business in a good way.

Steph

You know, our big thing is we want to create impact. We want to help the good guys win. Right. That’s what lights us up. And I really feel like this new tool that we created helps the good guys win. And in this conversation we’ve been having about leaders, we’ve been working with leaders.

While you’ve been working with leaders for longer than I have. I personally have been working with leaders for 14 years. You’ve been working with leaders for a lot longer than that.

David

But what’s interesting is not on this topic that we’re going to talk about today. Right. This is different. This is not only a growth edge for us, it’s a growth edge for everybody in our community.

Steph

Right. So what we noticed, sitting down and having conversations between the two of us is that leaders kind of fall into four different leadership types, leadership categories, especially the visionary leaders. Right. People that want to create something really wonderful in the world, that want to impact lives, that want to help more people. You know, the people that go into business because they have a mission.

They believe that they’re on purpose in what they’re doing. And we noticed that these leaders think very differently, not all leaders think the same. Not all leaders lead the same. Not all leaders need the same systems. Not all leaders need the same help. Not all you know, it’s not one size fits all, right.

In terms of leadership and a lot of the books that you read and a lot of the courses that are out there in leadership teach one way and it’s really black and white. It is. But when you look at the mindset of leaders, because it all stems with mindset, they all start in different places and they’re all influenced by their upbringing, just like anyone’s influenced by their upbringing right before the age of seven.

They don’t have the ability to choose what goes into their mind. So whatever their situation is, as that young person under the age of seven then gets absorbed, right? It goes on, yeah, yeah. And it stays. And it influences how that person filters their world.

David

Yeah. Forever shapes the way they see the world and the way that they approach and see their business. And that’s different.

Steph

Correct. And what we’ve noticed is that we can’t talk to each business owner the same way. Right.

David

That’s right.

Steph

And we’ve noticed this through the apps that we’ve done, the private coaching that we’ve done, the group. I mean, my gosh, we’ve done so much. We’ve worked so long with leaders of companies that we know that we have to have an understanding of what’s going on in their…

David

How they think.

Steph

How they think in order to help them. So I’m making this long story shorter right now. So what we did is we went to work and we created an assessment tool. And the idea behind this assessment tool is that you answer some very specific questions, not many of them. I think that I mean, I’ve taken this assessment six times to test it and make sure it works, but I think it takes literally six and a half minutes and you get a result.

So it categorizes you. And we’ve asked questions. It’s based in psychology. We’ve asked questions, make it based on human design. And it groups you in one of four leadership types. And then the cool thing about that is that with each leadership type, just like anything, you have the good and you have the bad, right?

You have the superpower of that leadership type and you also have the kryptonite, right? And it’s different for each leadership type. So I’m going to use myself as an example. Okay. So I took the quiz. I mean, I created it, but I didn’t actually know what I was going to turn out to be. So I took the quiz and my result was a catalyst leader and the superpower of a catalyst leader is that teams love to work with you.

A catalyst leader is all about building people up. It’s getting wins for everyone. It’s how you communicate and relationship build. I’m a relationship person, right? My strength as a leader is in having open communication, creating safe places for teams, and then teaching other people how to do that as well. But my kryptonite is in the belief that I have to do it all myself, that it’s difficult for me to delegate sometimes, that if it if it’s going to get done, it needs to get done right by me. My kryptonite is in allowing other people to help me.

Allowing, allowing myself to receive support because the opposite side of the catalyst leader is the martyr. And that’s 100% in my past. Right? Raised by martyrs became a martyr. I’m a recovering martyr. It shows up around the corner, oh, poor me, you know, I’ll just do it myself, work yourself to the bone.

Because my value was in how hard I worked and the fact that I could solve problems, right? Yeah. But for me to step into being the catalyst leader, I needed to. I need to let go of those things. And then the cool thing is, the report that you get after you take this quiz gives you specific things that you can start doing to begin to step more into the superpower side of your leader and out of the kryptonite side of your visionary leadership role.

So it’s not just one of those tools that you see on Facebook that tells you, oh, you’re a lion and here’s why you’re like a lion.

David

No, it’s really an assessment.

Steph

It’s very much an assessment. It’s very much a tool. An assessment that helps you uncover your blindspots.

David

Yeah. In an incredible way, too.

Steph

Yeah. And you know, so blindspots. Right. These are the things that you can’t see for yourself. Most of the time people get something that is not right, but you can’t figure out what that not right thing is, you feel like there’s something that you’re missing. There’s something that you don’t understand, but you’re not sure what it is you don’t understand.

But you know that there’s something that you don’t understand because you keep getting the result that you don’t want. That’s a blind spot. The purpose of this tool is to help you see that blind spot so that you can begin to make changes and begin and start to head in the right direction.

David

Yeah. Well, the other thing about the blind spot is that you have a tendency to unconsciously keep approaching it from what seems normal to you and you don’t understand why you’re not getting a different result. And it can be extremely frustrating, right? Because you see the world the way that you do and that makes sense to you. But why this doesn’t make sense to change it from your perspective is very confusing for people.

Steph

Right. Well, let’s take let’s take you, for example. Yeah. You are a charismatic leader. Right. And here’s the thing with charismatic leaders. They don’t want to be a leader. They don’t want to lead a team. And I don’t know how many times I’ve had conversations with business owners and finally pulled it out of them that they actually don’t want to be the leader of their company.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re a charismatic leader and you’re feeling constantly pushed to be the leader in your company, you’re going to create an absolute mess, right? Your team’s not going to be clear on the direction that you’re going. You’re going to constantly feel like you can’t communicate, like no one understands you.

David

Well, that’s the kryptonite part of it. That’s the key. You’re constantly misunderstood, right? We think fast. We think big, broad pictures. We’re very creative. We get bored extremely easily. That’s totally true for me. It’s my whole life. And as the interesting thing about this stuff is as a kid, the board was I was disciplined for the board part.

Instead of anybody recognizing what my gift was, I was ridiculed for it because it affected everybody else in a negative way. So it’s a constant. All my life I felt like I was misunderstood, like I was trying to get a message across. But the people that I was around, it was misunderstood. And it wasn’t till I got into business that I actually got celebrated, which was a huge shock for me.

Steph

Yeah. And just think you being the charismatic leader, if you wouldn’t have been able to step outside yourself and say, I’m not the best person for this job, I mean.

David

Right.

Steph

God only knows what would have happened.

David

There would have been no growth. You would just completely standstill forever.

Steph

And it opened the door for me to come in and say, I’ll be the leader and I know how to communicate with you. You have an idea. I’m thinking, I have no idea what he means. And I know the questions to ask, to pull out all the information that I need to be able to make it so.

So there are two other types of leaders. There’s Legacy Leader and there’s Limitless leader. I’m not going to go into them, but I guarantee that everyone, including you, falls into one of those four leadership characteristics. And every single one of you has a superpower that you may not even be aware of. That, if you could tap into more, would create amazing results for your business.

And you also have some kryptonite that you could actually have tied to your ankles right now because you’re doing things that you think you should be doing or not doing, things that you don’t even know you should be doing because of your leadership style. Right. Does that make sense?

David

Yeah. Oh, absolutely. You know, I’ve seen many people that are charismatic leaders that think that they’ve consistently hired the wrong people and they have trouble with people leaving. And so it goes back to that. I’m completely misunderstood. And what they don’t understand is they don’t have somebody with your talent and gifts to be able to communicate and build.

So there’s a balance that it has to happen. And I was talking to somebody about this. I said it’s really interesting. You have two people who bring these amazing gifts and it creates a third entity, right? It’s a beautiful creation. What comes out of those two things when you consider just actually working together, but you have to understand it to be able to do that, right?

Steph

And the purpose of this assessment is to not only help you understand, but it’s also to give you actual action things that you can begin to implement now to begin to change these things. So like I said, it’s not your typical quiz on Facebook that you take. It inspires you that you’re alive because of you, you know what I mean?

You’ve all seen those, right? And they’re fun, they’re great, whatever. But we wanted to add, you know, real value and make this something that can be super useful and also, you know, helpful for the person receiving the quiz and also helpful for a person who’s coaching the person receiving the quiz because that helps that person understand the person better.

And it also helps teams understand their leader better. So I just think this is going to create a ripple effect that we haven’t even thought of yet. .

David

Completely.

Steph

And I’m really excited to announce it, which is why we’re doing this special super quick.

David

Yes.

Steph

So if you’re interested in finding out what your visionary leader type is, we’d love for you to take this quiz. It’s completely free. We launched it to our list yesterday. So if you’re on our list, you would have gotten an email form. Make sure you check your email. And if you’re not on our list, you can take this quiz by going to lifeisnowinc.com/leader. So, super simple lifeisnowinc.com/leader.

We hope to see your quiz come through. We hope it provides an incredible amount of value for you and gives you some insights on what you need to stop doing. Yeah, and also what you need to start doing.

David

Uncover the blind spot.

Steph

And uncover the blind spots. It’s key.

David

Yep.

Steph

Thanks.

David

You bet.

Money Stories Matter31 Oct 202200:52:24
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_556-Mindset_Mondays-Lack_Mindset_FINAL.mp3

Most of us grew up hearing messages that reinforced the idea that money is scarce and that we should hold onto our money and avoid spending it on anything that’s “too much.” People will drive 30 minutes across town just to save $0.03 on a gallon of gas, as if that’s what makes you a good person. We’ve also heard things like, “It’s stupid to waste money on expensive things.”  These are your money stories.

In fact, spending money on certain things isn’t part of most people’s value system. For example, “Why spend money on breakfast?” “Why buy a $450 bottle of wine when you can buy it cheaper at the liquor store?” ($450 used to be Steph’s car payment!)

When you’re in business, these kinds of lack-based and scarcity-based ideas can actually hold you back from growth.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

    • Various memories that Steph, BT, and I all have around childhood experiences with money—and how these money stories impacted our sense of value and worth as adults
    • How BT’s rich uncle told him to “buy anything you want” at the sporting goods store—BT chose an $80 skateboard that was his mom’s salary for the entire week, and she made him take it back
    • How Steph was only allowed to spend money on certain things when she was growing up
    • The mindset behind people who think, “it’s stupid to waste money”
    • How Steph and BT’s daughter, Emma, purchased a $70 stuffed animal with her own Christmas money at age 7, and how this upset members of the family
    • Why your desire for something (e.g., a house) is actually the thing that will pull your business forward

Many business owners are terrified to spend money. They run their business based on survival. They’re worried about, “What if something bad happens? What if the other shoe drops?” Deep down, they have a fear of looking stupid.

The truth is, if you hold on to money, your business dies. If you run your business based on survival, your business dies.

You can change a lack mindset by focusing on what you desire. You get to choose what to believe in. You can choose to operate based on abundance rather than lack.

The Hidden Language of Sales06 Jan 202500:21:28

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM654_MDM_Dec17_24.mp3

What “mind” are you speaking to during your sales calls?—the conscious mind or the unconscious mind? If you want to be great at sales, you have to learn to speak to someone’s unconscious mind—the emotional mind. That is where all buying decisions are made.

A sales conversation is completely different than a typical, everyday conversation. In a normal conversation, you’re talking from one person’s conscious mind to the other person’s conscious mind. But sales is different. You have to speak directly to someone’s unconscious mind and ask the person one of the most intimate questions—“What do you want?” Doing this with the right tone, in the right context, can completely transform your sales results.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why talking to someone’s conscious mind leads to pushback and rejection
  • The 4 questions to ask during sales calls in order to speak to a person’s unconscious mind (this goes far beyond conscious resistance and taps into their emotional mind)
  • How the coaching industry exploded, and now everybody wants to be a coach—and people with low self-esteem want recognition from being a coach
  • How many entrepreneurs are selling in order to be seen, heard, validated, and to get their basic needs met (not to influence, or because they really feel called to do it)
  • Nobody buys anything because YOU think it’s a good idea—people do things for their own reasons
  • Why you must be SILENT after asking a question on a sales call, and allow the other person to experience free flow from their unconscious mind while they answer
  • When your ego gets involved, you get rejected and you feel hurt by the rejection—but if you were truly there to help someone, rejection wouldn’t matter

Amazing salespeople study sales like a doctor studies medicine their whole life—they’re constantly getting better at it. If you want to get great at sales, stop speaking to someone’s conscious mind, and start speaking to their unconscious mind.

A Conversation with Marc Polymeropoulos27 Oct 202200:34:16
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_555-Marc_Polymeropoulos.mp3

Marc Polymeropoulos is a retired CIA officer from the Senior intelligence service ranks. He served for years in the intelligence community, in the operational field and leadership assignments. He’s an expert in counterterrorism, covert action, and Human Intelligence Collection.

As one of the CIA’s most decorated field officers, Marc honed a unique style of leadership based on decision making under pressure, inclusivity, camaraderie, and competition. He’s the author of Clarity in Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the CIA.

Marc Polymeropoulos has a goal to pass on his knowledge to people in the sports and business world who could benefit from his unique experiences serving his country in the hotspots of the world.

In this episode, Marc and I discuss:

    • How Marc got into the CIA—and why he wants people to get excited about serving their country, whether it’s at the local, state, or federal level
    • How his mom put him on an airplane by himself at age ten, and he flew from JFK Airport to Paris alone—then his dad drove them miles through the Sahara Desert (and this is what got Marc hooked on the Middle East)
    • Principles on how to lead elite teams in times of crisis and how to deal with fear and uncertainty from a leadership perspective
    • The process of recruiting a foreigner, a spy, and getting someone to betray their own country, by identifying their motivations
    • How Marc was the base chief in Afghanistan for a year with 20 Americans and 1,000 Afghan indigenous fighters—and how being deployed taught him humility
    • How everyone at the CIA wants to be promoted quickly, but there’s something to be said for a slower, more methodical rise—because nothing beats experience
    • Marc’s thoughts on Pineapple Express and how the U.S. blundered the exit from Afghanistan

Marc Polymeropoulos also shares how he had “a really awful end of his career,” due to Havana Syndrome. He got physically sick and experienced a loss of cognitive abilities, and didn’t get the help he needed.

“I was a highly decorated officer, rising to the top. I didn’t want to retire, but I had to,” he says. The clear leadership lesson for any organization is that, “You’ve got to take care of your people. And unfortunately, the CIA didn’t take care of me when I needed them most. It was a moral betrayal for me.”

The Terror Barrier: The Gateway to Success24 Oct 202200:43:45
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_554-Mindset_Mondays-Terror_Barrier.mp3

Whenever you’re about to do something new, your subconscious mind will often create a circumstance or problem to distract you. It will try to get you to stop taking action. It does this, because it’s trying to protect you from the unknown. This phenomenon is known as the terror barrier.

Growth is littered with terror barriers. Every time you do something to advance, you’ll always have something new to face. “New level, new devil.” It’s estimated that 80% of businesses fail within their first five years, and this is due to the terror barrier. It’s because the owner refuses to do things that are required for growth and which are outside their comfort zone.

In this episode Steph and I discuss:

    • How everyone has a terror barrier—and it develops at an early age
    • Why 80% of people who go to personal development seminars never do anything with the information they learn (due to the terror barrier)
    • How we, as parents, pass along our insecurities, terror barriers, and what we think we can’t do to our children, to try to protect them—and how this makes them less effective at life
    • How the subconscious mind gets you to agree with the problem that seems to be in front of you, so that you’ll quit
    • Steph’s skydiving experience in her 20s—and how “nothing could have prepared her for the onslaught of thoughts that plagued her as she was in the plane”
    • How stepping through the discomfort and into possibility makes you feel better

Plus, I share the details of how I knew my marriage wouldn’t make it back in 1993—and how my own terror barrier was around that relationship (and divorce). I realized my ex-wife and I were on completely different tracks in life, headed for two different destinations.

Vulnerability: Is It Good For Business?17 Oct 202200:45:04
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_554-Mindset_Mondays-Vulnerability.mp3

Being in business requires vulnerability. In fact, vulnerability is an essential part of growing. You’re vulnerable just picking up the phone and making sales calls.

To get from 6 figures to 7 figures a year or higher, you need to create the right team. In order to build a team that stands behind you, you have to be vulnerable in your leadership. You must create a culture and environment in which your team can also be vulnerable with you, share ideas, innovate, and not be afraid to make mistakes. The fear of vulnerability is why many business owners don’t grow.

People walk around with fear and anxiety, because they’re afraid to be vulnerable. Often, they were raised in an abusive or toxic environment. So they don’t know how to be vulnerable. By learning this skill set, you can bring calm, peace, and joy to yourself every day.

In this episode, we discuss:

    • How NOT being vulnerable is like wearing armor, putting up a shield, self protecting, and not letting anyone see what’s under the armor
    • How low retention rates are a huge problem for many businesses, and team turnover is really expensive, both in time and money
    • What it takes to cultivate an environment that retains a team and builds a business
    • How most people are conflict averse and try to avoid conflict—but as a business owner, you have to learn to embrace conflict
    • Why you must communicate your EXACT expectations to your team (which is also vulnerable—because what will people think of your expectations?)
    • Why your relationships shouldn’t based on assumptions

You can’t innovate without vulnerability. You need to have bad ideas and make mistakes in order to innovate.

Being vulnerable requires being courageous. You must be willing to open yourself up to whatever happens. Choose courage over fear.

Are Your “Rules” Helping or Hurting Your Success?10 Oct 202200:37:38
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_552-Are_Your_Rules_Helping_or_Hurting_Your_Success_.mp3

We all have certain rules in place that we follow in our life, yet we’ve never questioned where they came from.

We have rules about which foods we’ll eat, what places we’ll travel to, and which experiences we’ll allow ourselves to have (or not have). From the cars we buy, to the lipstick we wear, to how we make pot roast—rules control our lives, even if we’re not aware of them and even if they’re illogical.

This conversation was inspired by our team’s discussion of the topic, “foods we would never eat.” Particularly—chocolate chip cookies dipped in apple juice.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How we pick up behaviors, ideas, and ideologies from our parents while we’re growing up—and how many of these rules aren’t based on anything other than a belief
    • How your subconscious mind uses RULES to keep you from doing what you want to do, having what you want to have, and experiencing incredible things that you might not even know you’re missing out on
    • How rules can be unspoken, yet are handed down from one generation to the next, with no rhyme or reason as to why they exist
    • How Steph never tried a banana until her 20s—because her mother hated them and made a face every time someone brought them up
    • How Brandon didn’t get contact lenses for years, simply because his mom never had contacts (he changed this after Steph questioned him about it)
    • How 7-figure business owners follow hidden rules about leadership that hamper their growth and suck their joy
    • How as a kid, I was fascinated with Europe—and my father always told me, “You don’t want to go to Europe” (yet he’d never been there)

What rules do you follow? Why are you following them? Where are you letting someone else’s belief control your actions? What ideas did you take on that you never challenged?

Developing rules is a way of staying safe and in control. Rules give us a level of certainty about something, even if it’s not true.

In business, rules often create a value conflict that holds you back from growth—like not wanting to spend money on certain things, not wanting to go into debt, and not wanting to be “irresponsible” with money.

A Conversation with LTC Scott Mann (US Army, Retired)06 Oct 202200:49:50
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_550-Scott_Mann.mp3

Scott Mann is a retired lieutenant colonel who spent 23 years in the United States Army, 18 of which were as a Green Beret, the US Army Special Forces. He was a member of seventh Special Forces Group, working in Central and South America.

I spoke with Scott Mann about his experiences in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks, as well as his thoughts on the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan, and how people were left behind. That event felt like a slap in the face to the American people and to the military, yet nobody is talking about it. Our senior leaders, political leaders, and even our generals aren’t acknowledging these issues. If people talk about it, their careers are being ended.

Recruiting and retention for the U.S. military is in the toilet. 73% of veterans feel betrayed by the Afghan departure and the abandonment of our allies (there’s been an 81% spike in the VA hotline since August). All of this indicates we’ve got a serious leadership crisis on our hands.

In this episode, Scott and I discuss:

    • How the world shifted for the special operations community and Green Beret community after 9/11

    • The mental health challenges, suicides, post-traumatic stress, survivor’s guilt, TBI, and now COVID challenges that veterans have experienced, especially Vietnam veterans

    • How some military officers and senior officers are basically politicians who have succumbed to the corrosiveness of power and careerism

    • How Al Qaida is reconstituting Afghanistan, and turning it back into a terrorist state

    • How the United States has “lost our myth”—we no longer have a unifying, national myth that brings people together; storytelling is what binds us and gives us our sense of self

    • How our current narrative is based on factions, tribalism, and divisiveness meant to stir up fear and anger

Scott Mann still has a lot of optimism about this country. He believes our best days are still in front of us. But it starts with us. Nobody else is coming. Leadership will come from the bottom up—from moms and dads, brothers and sisters, leaders, veterans, and business owners in a civil society.

There needs to be accountability, personal ownership, lessons learned, mistakes acknowledged, corrections and adjustments made regarding what happened in Afghanistan.

Divine Timing: Is There Such a Thing?03 Oct 202200:41:04
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_549-Mindset_Mondays-Timing_Is_Everything.mp3

Timing is one of the biggest reasons why someone won’t take action on a goal they have right now. People often use divine timing as an excuse not to take action. It may appear as though God is saying, “Nope, this is the wrong time,” or, “This isn’t the right time.” But that is superstition.

The truth is, you have the power to change any situation in your life, right now. Fear and ignorance get in the way of us creating the life we really want.

Everyone has the same amount of time. The only time is now. If we’re not focused on the now, we’re either projecting into the future (worrying or escaping), or we’re dealing with a memory of the past (reminiscing). Neither one exists.

In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:

    • Why so many people are terrified of the present, because they have anxiety and don’t know what to do right now
    • How worrying is the act of using your imagination incorrectly—people worry because they don’t know how to control their mind, and they don’t understand the laws of the universe
    • How people who were raised to be religious often weren’t taught that God is inside you—and we’re often taught to look outside of ourselves for everything
    • How opportunity rarely shows up at “the right time”
    • Why we need to get past superstition if we want to be successful
    • What divine timing”really means and why people use it as an excuse

The idea of divine timing is superstition in the sense that there is a divinity outside of yourself. YOU are the divinity. You’re responsible for creating the life you want. We determine our own divine timing.

Is This a Sign I’m Headed in the Wrong Direction?26 Sep 202200:39:04
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_547-Mindset_Mondays-Psychological_Safety.mp3

Whenever something bad happens, you might be tempted to think it’s the universe giving you a “sign” that you’re headed in the wrong direction. That’s actually not the case.

When you set a big goal, make a decision to do something new, or take a risk in business—crazy stuff often shows up. This may seem like God or the universe is trying to stop you. But it’s actually your subconscious mind engaging in a sabotage pattern, trying to get you to quit.

The universe doesn’t have a sense of humor. Nor is it “testing” you or giving you a big “clue.” There’s no old white guy in the sky or grand wizard behind the scenes, directing everything with puppet strings. Your mind is just hyper programmed to ask, “What does this mean?” Your subconscious mind wants to give meaning to everything, so that you can define it—which then tells you how to create a pattern to react to it, so that you don’t have to think about it.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • A text Steph got from a client who was shocked when someone asked for a refund (was this a “test”?)
    • How to determine if you’re on the wrong path—and what the hidden meaning is in all the chaos showing up in your life
    • How people look for validation outside themselves to figure out if they’re making the right decision and doing the right thing
    • All the crazy sh*t that happened in Steph’s life when she first made the decision to coach with me
    • Why negative things show up after you make a decision to do something new—and how this is your subconscious programming hijacking your focus
    • Why personal responsibility is a MUST if you want any sort of success in life (complaining and being a victim is the exact opposite of personal responsibility)
    • Why there are no “signs”—because you’ll see whatever you’re programmed to see, and you’ll interpret it however you’re programmed to interpret it

Chaos usually shows up when you’re stuck in a state of indecision or limbo. That’s when you create your own personal hell. Once you make a firm decision, all the chaos stops.

What you call a “problem” in your life exists only because you’re giving it energy. You’re literally creating the problem; it’s just an illusion.

Understanding Psychological Safety in Business19 Sep 202200:39:04
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_547-Mindset_Mondays-Psychological_Safety.mp3

In business, psychological safety means that the people who work for you can work without the fear of repercussions if they make a mistake, challenge the status quo, or come up with an idea that doesn’t work.

Psychological safety allows your team to be free to do their best without having to worry about being humiliated or made to feel “less than,” because their idea didn’t work out.

Many organizations practice psychological safety, including Google. In fact, they credit their ability to innovate with how psychologically safe their organization is.

The problem is, many of us were raised in an environment that didn’t allow us to make mistakes. We were guilted, shamed, or humiliated instead of having our mistakes celebrated. So, as adults we have a tendency to hide our mistakes rather than bringing them forward, learning from them, and figuring out what caused them. Many of us also get triggered when other people make a mistake.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • What happens when organizations aren’t psychologically safe (hospitals are a key example of this—where people end up getting hurt, because nurses aren’t allowed to point out the mistakes of doctors)
    • How the highest performing, most innovative schools make it psychologically safe for kids to make mistakes
    • Why you should create a culture of psychological safety in your business, lead by example, sunshine your mistakes, and be vulnerable with your team
    • Why you shouldn’t hire “more of you”—because then you’ll have a bunch of you’s running around, saying yes to all of your ideas instead of innovating
    • Why failing to have clear expectations creates an unsafe environment for your team—because people don’t know what expectations they’re trying to hit; they don’t know what is considered a win
    • Why we get triggered and what’s at the root of it

Plus, Steph and I give examples of “nightmare bosses” we’ve witnessed throughout our lives. Some of our coaching clients are unknowingly creating a culture that’s the opposite of psychological safety, because they react to employees in a very harsh way.

Instead of getting angry with your underperforming team, make sure you set up measures of success or KPIs (key performance indicators) for each role that tell people when they’re successful

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 546 – Mindset Monday’s – The Sly Disguises of Fear12 Sep 202200:30:14
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_546-Mindset_Mondays-The_Sly_Disguises_of_Fear.mp3

We often talk about the sly disguises of opportunity. But in today’s episode, Steph and I discuss the sly disguises of fear.

Many of the clients in our TEM90 program ask questions that show fear in disguise. They’ll ask about one thing, thinking they’re solving a particular problem—when really, the underlying issue is fear.

There are many fears associated with being the leader of a company. People are often great at doing the thing they sell, but they don’t have the skills or knowledge to run the business from an operational standpoint. They have fear around those things.

They think:

“What if I do the wrong thing and someone leaves?

“What if I don’t set this up right and I have to redo it all over again?”

“What if I hire someone and I can’t pay them?”

One of the big disguises of fear is resistance or procrastination. If you’re procrastinating—there’s something you’re resisting being, doing, or having.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

    • How fear is designed to keep you alive
    • Why you must be mindful, so that you can spot fear in your mind before it takes control of your behavior and results
    • How your decisions (or lack of a decision) can be controlled by fear—and this is tough to see sometimes, because your subconscious mind doesn’t want you to see that, because then you can change it
    • How confusion is a key indicator of fear—and confusion is strategy of your mind to try to stop you from moving forward into the unknown
    • Why, if you don’t have the results that you want in your business, you’re in resistance to something
    • How many business owners resist growing, because they don’t want to upset the apple cart

Plus, Steph shares the story of how she caught herself experiencing fear and procrastination while working on a project on the plane this past week.

Most people want to move away from fear, but I think you should move INTO it. Fear is our friend. It tells you a tremendous amount of information about your next step. You can’t reverse engineer a multi 7-figure business if you’re in resistance. Maybe you need to make a decision about something. Whatever it is, procrastination exists because there’s some kind of fear underneath it.

Unlocking Your Inner Greatness30 Dec 202400:22:58

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM653_Unlocking_Your_Inner_Greatness.mp3

Recently I taught my clients who are in The Elite Mind Program a lesson about “greatness.” I taught that every person has greatness in them, and we all have a purpose for being here. Each of us must own our greatness and train ourselves to internalize the idea that we’re a great person. Why? Because this is the starting point for everything—including starting a business, growing a business, or reaching any big goal.

I told my clients, “Tell yourself, ‘I’m a great person.’ Ask yourself, ‘What would a great person do in their life?’”

After the lesson was over, I got 10-15 text messages from them, all asking me: “How do I know I’m great?” I realized they were asking this question because it didn’t feel true to them—they didn’t have an emotional feeling inside of themselves that they could connect this statement to.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:

  • How most people’s emotional state regulates their reality
  • How as children, almost everyone else has authority over us until we’re a certain age
  • As adults, subconsciously we’re looking for a “transition of power” so that we know once we’ve accomplished something
  • At some point, you must become the authority of yourself
  • How historically many cultures had rites of passage indicating substantial transitions in life—but in the West, we’ve largely gotten rid of those things
  • How most people look to their past wins, losses, rights, wrongs, ups, and downs to determine how they feel RIGHT NOW—and why that’s dangerous, (because what if you don’t have a great past?)
  • How our desire gives us direction in life, and how we must BECOME the person who fulfills our purpose

The truth is, we can decide at any moment that we’re great. Like God said in the Bible, “I am because I am.” This statement has tremendous power—“I am great.” It’s your responsibility and your choice as to what you’ll do with it.

You’re great because you’re great. You don’t need to justify it. You don’t need anyone else’s approval or confirmation of it.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 545 – Full Throttle Thursday – Woodstock 99: The Mess That No One Planned For08 Sep 202200:42:50
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_545-FTT-Woodstock99.mp3

In 1999, the world as we knew it was about to change. With Y2K around the corner, everyone was in a frenzy and needed to blow off steam. Woodstock 99 was the perfect vehicle to do that.

Produced by Michael Lang, Woodstock 99 was to be the biggest concert of the millennium. Taking place at a giant, decommissioned Air Force base in New York, in 100-degree heat, 200,000 people were jammed in together like sardines for three days. Bands like Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Korn, and Limp Bizkit  stirred up the crowd. Everyone was drunk, naked, and/or on every kind of drug imaginable.

Netflix’s 3-part documentary, “Train Wreck: Woodstock 99,” shows how the concert deteriorated fast. Everything that could go wrong, DID go wrong. The promoters manipulated 200,000 people—including confiscating all their water on the way in. With no water, no working toilets, trash everywhere, overpriced food, and no sleep—people began to lose their minds. The crowd’s mindset began to dissolve into anarchy—with fires, riots, and chaos.

What was the mindset at play that caused Woodstock 99 to morph into an insane mess? It’s a fascinating look into human psychology.

In this episode, BT and I discuss:

    • How the promoters obviously didn’t plan properly for Woodstock 99
    • How the evils of capitalism played a definite role in Woodstock 99—with pricing gauging, denying people food and water, and the Pay-Per-View event, which showed people taking their tops off
    • How toilets overflowed and poured out into the grass, and people broke the waterline because they couldn’t get water fast enough—and everyone had trench mouth
    • How no one took responsibility for anything that went wrong—they all had the same story—“It’s not my fault” (even Michael Lang, the person who put on the event)
    • The major differences between Woodstock 69 and Woodstock 99, especially the aggressiveness of the music
    • How music raises emotions and controls much of how we’re feeling
    • Why most people think Woodstock 69 was all about peace, yet it in reality—both concerts had riots, people died, and the US military had to step in and airlift supplies

When you’re a teenager, all that stuff looks exciting and full of energy.

When you’re older, you’re like, “Screw that.” You understand the consequences of things much differently. When people are that young, they really don’t.

What Exactly is Leverage In Business? – Mindset Mondays – The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 54405 Sep 202200:29:52
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_544-Mindset_Mondays-What_is_Leverage.mp3

Leverage is our ability to move big things with small levers, with a minimal amount of effort. The way we move ahead in the world is through leverage. Our smart phone is leverage. It gives us tons of information at our fingertips. A calculator is leverage. It lets us do math problems quickly and easily.

Yet, for some reason, we’re taught from a young age to “work hard” and make things more difficult. In math class, we’re told, “show your work” and “don’t use a calculator at school.” When we take this ideology into our business, we block ourselves from experiencing real growth and success.

In business, leverage is about “whom, not how.” If you want to grow, you must leverage the knowledge and expertise of other people who are further ahead of you. You can’t do everything yourself, and you don’t need to figure everything out yourself. It can take a lifetime to develop knowledge, a skill set, and expertise—and you can only learn so much on your own. Resisting hiring people can slow down your business growth.

In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How relying on “hard work” only took me so far (I was taught, “In order to have success, you must work hard, suffer, and sacrifice”)
    • How one small adjustment in my thinking changed my whole life—and I went from NOT being able to pay my bills to tripling my income and having more than enough (because I leveraged my mentor’s expertise)
    • What leverage means[, and how people see it differently—e.g., leverage can mean one thing to a mechanical engineer, and something totally different to a business owner
    • Steph’s experience with nursing a sick baby who had food allergies—and how the doctor was clueless and could only recommend surgery (this was the catalyst for Steph questioning authority and making major changes in her life)
    • How Steph leveraged the expertise of a massage therapist, lactation consultant, and Chinese herbalist—all of whom helped her baby’s symptoms stop overnight
    • How many of us grew up in an environment where it wasn’t OK to ask for help—in fact, it was humiliating

You can leverage tools, software, a new hire, a consultant, or even podcast equipment—to reach thousands of people and grow your business.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 543 – Full Throttle Thursday – Are UFOs Real?01 Sep 202200:37:36
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_543-FTT-Are_UFOs_Real.mp3

During the pandemic, the Pentagon publicly announced that UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) are real, and that we’ve known about them for a long time. They also admitted that UFOs are of non-human origin. The Navy has been tracking them visually and capturing UFOs on radar over the last 15 years.

It’s interesting that this information about UFOs was announced during COVID —when almost nobody was paying attention. Apparently, large parts of the government (like Congress) weren’t aware of this, and now they’re having discussions about whether UFOs are a security risk, and what to do about them.

More people became aware of UFOs after Bob Lazar came on the Joe Rogan show. Lazar shared his story of being hired by the government in the late 1980s. As a physicist, his specialty was jet propulsion. He was hired to work at “Area 51,” and worked on nine UFOs that our government had in their possession.

Lazar says life has been miserable since he first talked about his experiences. (Even his Wikipedia page calls him a “self-proclaimed” physicist, in an attempt to debunk everything he’s said.) The government tapped his phones, followed him around, and considered him a security risk. They wiped out his history, including his birth record and his studies at MIT. But as time passed, everything Lazar said turned out to be true.

Today BT and I discuss:

    • Our thoughts on UFOs—and how life may not be as we know it
    • How human beings have a tendency to think we know everything, but we’re still very young as a civilization—we’re still basically learning to find our way
    • How the awareness of UFOs can really mess with our foundation of values and our beliefs about how the world operates
    • How images of UFOs appear on historic art pieces that were constructed in the 1700s—including the image of the baptism of Christ
    • My own personal experience seeing something very strange that might have been a UFO

It seems improbable that we’d be the only form of life living in this vast universe.

No matter what you want to call these visitors—aliens, spacecraft, UFOs, UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena)—they’re certainly intriguing, and we want to be the first ones to unlock them.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 542 – Mindset Monday’s – Reverse Engineer Your Vision29 Aug 202200:29:59
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_542-Mindset_Mondays-Reverse_Engineer_Your_Vision.mp3

There are many misunderstandings about what it means to have a vision. Many business owners get tripped up over their vision. They think if they speak it out loud, then it’s set in stone, and they’ll be pigeonholed into that. Or they think once they create their vision, they’ll know exactly how to do it and what all the steps will be in advance. That’s just not how it works.

People often get stuck around their vision, because they immediately want to know “how” it will work. If they can’t see how, then they won’t let themselves even want it. When you create a vision, you’ll ONLY see the first step. Once you take action on it, then you’ll see the next step. You must trust in yourself, have faith in the people around you, and know that no matter what happens as you follow your vision—you’ll get there.

In this episode, Steph and I discuss:

    • How your vision can change as you grow—and why you should give yourself permission to want something, even if it’s small
    • How Steph’s vision was to replace her teacher income when she first started (that’s as far as far she could see)
    • How most people don’t want to be seen, because they’re afraid of screwing up (they’re more focused on what they might lose, rather than what they’ll gain by following their vision)
    • Why it’s important to get out of survival mode, so that you can be creative when thinking about your vision
    • Steph’s love for LEGO and how she and Brandon have put together the craziest LEGO sets—and how this relates to what happens in business when you’re trying to overcome problem after problem
    • How kids create entire worlds with their imagination where anything is possible and there are no rules—and then it gets shut down

Plus, we talk about why you should paint a picture of what you want your life and business to look like in 3 years. Let yourself dream and fantasize a bit. Don’t focus on the “how.” Give yourself the time and space to figure out what you want your vision to look like. Hone it, make sure it excites you, and feel it in your body. Don’t censor yourself. There’s nothing you can’t have, and there’s nothing you can’t do.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 541 – Full Throttle Thursday – Sam Harris & The Death of Reason25 Aug 202200:36:16
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_541-FTT-Sam_Harris_The_Death_of_Reason.mp3

Sam Harris is a public intellectual and brilliant thought leader with many strong opinions. For years, he’s tried to present a rational argument for atheism. I love learning from people I disagree with, and while I disagree with Sam on many things—I respect that he’s tried to figure out how we can have a good moral value system without religion.

Sam is supposed to be an intelligent guy who can think rationally. Last week, he was on the TRIGGERnometry Podcast with Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster. On that show, I saw Sam not thinking rationally. He was extremely biased to the point of destruction. Instead of using reason, he entered into the world of judgment.

Some of the things he said about Donald Trump is complete derangement. Sam said that the Trump University scandal is worse than colluding with China, Russia, and having hookers, Coke, crack, and dead babies in the basement. He’s basically saying that anything Trump could do is worse than all of the above—and that statement isn’t rational.

You can see the look on Konstantin’s face—like, “I can’t believe I’m hearing this.” Konstantin and Francis give Sam multiple opportunities to fix this as it’s happening in real time. And Sam just keeps doubling down. It’s a fascinating view into human thought.

Today, BT and I discuss:

    • Why it’s dangerous to stay locked into your own point of view without hearing other people’s viewpoints
    • How we’re living in a world where reason is being thrown down the toilet (we can’t even figure out what a boy or a girl is anymore)
    • How the United States constitution is designed so that everybody gets a voice—and yet many people think free speech is a four-letter word and that we shouldn’t have it
    • How the human brain gets warped to the point where, in a democratic society, it becomes okay to disrupt a person being elected into office
    • Why I think Sam Harris has a blind spot—because in his mind, a person of higher education can’t be a moron, but anybody who doesn’t have a higher education can be

When it comes to the upcoming election, we all have emotional issues around it. But can we stick to reason or is this the death of reason?

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 540 – Mindset Monday’s – Saying Yes Creates More22 Aug 202200:29:19
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_540-Mindet_Mondays-Saying_Yes_Creates_More_AuditionEdit.mp3

Have you wanted to do something for a very long time? Have wanted to move somewhere, buy something, or do something for no reason other than, “I want it”? If so, then follow that desire—even if it’s something small. This expands your life and opens up incredible opportunities for you. In short, saying yes matters.

People often tell my CEO, Steph Tuss, “I’ve wanted this thing for a long time. I can feel it in my body. On the surface it seems silly, but I’ve always wanted it.”

Steph’s response to them is, “By when will you have it?” Most people come up with excuses on why they can’t do it. But it’s just a decision.

In this episode, we discuss:

    • How getting the thing you want, pushes against some of your old values that no longer serve you
    • How the universe expands to meet you—and brings you more opportunities—when you take action on your desire
    • Why it’s not the thing you want that matters—it’s the reason WHY you’re saying yes or no to it that makes the difference
    • How purchasing something you want that’s unrelated to business will absolutely have an impact on your business
    • Steph’s story of deciding to move to Maryland 11 years ago into a house at a much higher price point than her family was used to, and how everything in her life expanded as a result of this decision
    • How your environment impacts your growth
    • Why the phrase, “You don’t need that” shuts down a person’s desire

If you’ve been wanting to do something for a long time, do it. Book the trip. Buy the Rolex. Get the house you want. Make a decision to do something that will cause you to grow. Allow yourself to follow your desire. The universe will open up incredible opportunities for you.

The Universe gives us exactly what we ask for.  It just comes down to making a decision, and doing something for expansion.

If you’re willing to do whatever it takes to pay for that thing, then set a date by when you’ll have it. And follow through. You’ll be amazed at what changes for you.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 539 – Full Throttle Thursday – Is Detachment From Media Dangerous?18 Aug 202200:34:16
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_539-Is_Detachment_From_Media_Dangerous.mp3

Huge changes are coming upon our world. The World Economic Forum has essentially said that in 2030 you’re not going to own anything and you’re going to be happy. And they’re seriously trying to make this happen. The White House has criminalized free speech in many cases. The academic system is changing our history and inserting all kinds of crazy things in there. By the time people get out of school, they don’t know how to think.

If you don’t know what’s happening—and you don’t know where to get accurate information about it—you won’t be able to make correct decisions for yourself. Detachment from the media (including mainstream media and social media) can be dangerous and irresponsible. Yes, there are good and bad things about it, and there’s constant noise and negativity…but you still need to know what’s happening, because it WILL affect you.

In this episode, BT and I discuss:

    • How all news is a business with an agenda—and corruption comes from media being loyal to their shareholders and advertisers
    • How CNN got in big trouble, and they’re almost out of business because of things they’ve lied about
    • How journalistic integrity has taken a backseat in favor of clickbait headlines and, “If it bleeds, it leads” (there’s no such thing as “unbiased” news, because all humans are biased)
    • The nature of propaganda—how it consistently sells you on FEAR, in order to intentionally manipulate you
    • My thoughts on “wokeness,” and how derogatory attitudes towards police can be traced back to the 60s and 70s—in shows like Dragnet and Adam-12
    • How the generation of kids from the ’50s and ‘60s are now in power in this country
    • How, during the Civil War, only 30% of people cared about what was happening back then—because people have a tendency to want to ignore what’s going on

Plus, I share why I don’t think everyone will end up “in the same boat” in our country. Historically, propaganda has always gone after the weakest among us: the uneducated, those who aren’t prepared, and those who aren’t keeping up to date on what’s going on. Things can be taken away from those people very easily.

It will be much more difficult for the government to take money away from big multimillion dollar companies. They’re going after “the little guy.” Those people are in big, big trouble.

Mindset Monday’s – Winning Through Intimidation15 Aug 202200:32:03
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_538-Mindset_Mondays-Winning_Through_Intimidation.mp3

Winning Through Intimidation by Robert J. Ringer is one of the top 15 books I’d recommend for business people to read. I first found out about this book in the 1990s, and my initial response was, “I don’t want to win through intimidation.” Although it’s catchy, the title is a bit misleading.

The author tells stories through the metaphor of “Screw U” university and defines the 3 types of intimidators—people who show up in your life who will cause you to lose. A big idea in the book is to stop assuming people have your best interests in mind, because they don’t.

The 3 types of intimidators are:

      • People who openly act in their own self-interest and basically give zero sh#ts about you.

      • People who work behind your back to cut you out. They say one thing to you, but behind your back they’re very much working against you.

      • People, who despite their best intentions, cut you out regardless.

All three types are dangerous.

In this episode, we discuss:

    • How Winning Through Intimidation translates to business and how, in any financial transaction, the person who’s most intimidated will earn the least

    • How you can avoid being intimidated and losing

    • Why you should stop assuming that just because someone’s “nice” to you, they have your best interest in mind (they don’t)

    • The importance of looking at a person’s “performance data” before you blindly trust them (which from the book, Trust, by Iyanla Vanzant)

    • Why you should make decisions based on performance data—not on what people are constantly telling you

    • How “triangulation” is key part of someone’s psychology who has narcissist borderline personality disorder—they feel like a terrible person inside and are constantly trying to see how many pawns they can move in their favor, so that they don’t feel like a terrible person

    • How many business owners hire people who are either “them” or someone below them—rather than looking for the absolute best that they could hire to move them forward

If you feel intimidated by someone, it’s either because your self-esteem is low, or you see yourself as “below” that person. This book helps bring you up, so that you see yourself as an equal.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 537 – Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Benedek11 Aug 202200:28:40
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_537-A_Conversation_w_Dr_Andrew_Benedek.mp3

Dr. Andrew Benedek is an entrepreneur who focuses on the idea of climate change. His current company, Anaergia, is designed to help offset climate change by generating “renewable natural gas” to replace the natural gas currently being used. His previous company developed technology for recycling water.

When it comes to climate change, many people believe the biggest problem is carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuel. Dr. Andrew Benedek says, “Methane is 84 times worse than carbon dioxide.” Food waste and organic waste that goes into landfills is being converted into methane—which then goes in the atmosphere. “The concentration of methane is low, but the impact is very significant. About 37% of the impact on climate change is due to the increase in methane in the atmosphere,” he says.

With increases in population, we have more and more landfills, especially in Asia. Dr. Andrew Benedek’s company is trying to convert methane from being a problem to a positive fuel replacement.

In this episode we discuss:

    • How it’s remarkably difficult to change our fuel infrastructure, and it can take 60 years or more to do (e.g., solar power was invented 60 years ago, and today only 10% of the world’s energy in solar or wind)
    • Why Dr. Andrew Benedek thinks “the problem with climate change is that it’s very complicated”—and that the current structure of government and the four-year cycle of American elections makes it difficult to solve the problem, because it causes a “short-term view”
    • Why many technical people are frustrated, because they can see how things can be done, but they don’t know how to get technology commercialized
    • How 25% of Denmark’s natural gas is renewable—and they plan to get to 100% renewable by 2030
    • How government leadership and incentive can help us change infrastructure relatively quickly—yet at the same time, government often does not make a good business partner
    • Why Dr. Andrew Benedek believes the secret to creating a successful company in the environmental space is to “pick a problem that’s not going to go away, but will increase”

We also discuss Ford’s plans to lay off 8,000 people, GM’s announcement that they won’t make anything but electric by 2035; and Volvo’s plans to go all electric by 2030. Dr. Andrew Benedek says “The tipping point is going to happen soon.”

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 536 – Mindset Monday’s – Embrace the Imbalance08 Aug 202200:29:32
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_536-MindsetMondays_Embrace_the_Imbalance.mp3

People often ask us how to create “balance” in their business—particularly between work and family. As a business owner and/or parent, you’re responsible for so many different things. Whether you’re devoting time to a marriage, a family, a job, your church, your civic duties, or social interests—everything requires a certain time investment from you, for it to be effective.

When a person starts a business, that requires almost all of their time in order to be successful, especially in the beginning when they’re bootstrapping and doing everything themselves.

In this episode my CEO, Steph Tuss, and I discuss:

    • Why searching for “balance” is often a way to avoid feeling guilty—and how the search for balance is really someone looking for comfort
    • The phenomenon of “mom guilt”—and how parents can be emotionally torn between wanting to grow their business, and being afraid to take time away from their kids (so they end up using their kids as an excuse not to grow)
    • How being “out of balance” means discomfort
    • How you can eliminate feeling “off balance” by putting proper boundaries in place—when you’re working, you’re working; when you’re with your family, you’re with your family
    • Why you must adjust your goals based on your responsibilities and the things that are important to you
    • How Steph planned for imbalance as a mom, wife, and leader—and this helped her stay married
    • How being a people-pleaser and a peacekeeper can make you lose sense of who you really are—so it’s important to carve time out to be by yourself and to know what’s important to you

Just like with nature, there are seasons in your business. There are times when you’re planting seeds, setting yourself up, and things feel more quiet. Then there are times when you’re harvesting, and things are hectic. There’s no way to achieve balance when you’re harvesting—and you wouldn’t want to, because you want to capitalize on the opportunity in the moment.

If you’re at a flat line all year long, there’s no innovation, challenge, or adversity. Imbalance in business is what drives innovation. For that reason, you must welcome the discomfort that comes with owning your business. Embrace it, and get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Abagail Pumphrey – Boss Project23 Dec 202400:30:21

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM652_AbagailPumphrey.mp3

Abagail Pumphrey is the owner of Boss Project, a woman-owned education company & award-winning design agency that helps you design your business around your life (not the other way around.) She started as a freelancer, built an agency, and has since created a community of entrepreneurs worldwide who are building their own online businesses. Abagail educates people on how to create more sustainability, build more revenue, and save more time behind the scenes.

In 2016, a year and a half into her business, Abagail was involved in a five-car collision that changed her life instantly. With a traumatic brain injury, she had a long five-year recovery. Forced to continue working in her business while she was recovering, she says, “I became incredibly aware of just how reliant the business I had built was on me.” Rebuilding from the ground up, Abagail designed a business that gave her more flexibility, that was less reliant on her, and could continue to thrive when life inevitably happens.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How business challenges you in every possible way, especially in the beginning—and it entails personal growth
  • How there are very few things we can do in business that are unchangeable—we can always pivot, change direction, make adjustments, and even potentially remove decisions we previously made
  • How Abagail found herself burning out, giving every ounce of energy she had to running her business—and realizing how important it was to make her business less reliant on herself
  • How making money lets you deal with problems without being consumed by the problem
  • Abagail’s passion for helping people create more financial freedom, while building businesses that support the life they want—and how she helps entrepreneurs develop an “offer ecosystem” so they don’t have to compete against themselves for the same client with too many different offerings
  • How business owners are look for “proof” that they can succeed—whether that’s through testimonials, sales, or their clients getting value or exceeding the goals they set
  • The biggest mindset hurdle Abagail thinks people need to get past in order to create ease and flow in their business

Plus, we talk about the idea of “time freedom”—and why you don’t always have to be growing BIGGER in business (it’s all about what season you’re in).

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 535 – Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Kelly Bandas04 Aug 202200:27:14
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_535-A_Conversation_w_Kelly_Bandas.mp3

Kelly Bandas is a writer and comedian best known for her popular Instagram and TikTok videos, which satirize everything from millennial motherhood to social media culture. Using self-deprecating humor (with her being from the Northeast), her mission is to empower and lift up other women through community, inclusivity, and laughter.

Her new book is Rookie Mistakes: A Grown-Up’s Field Guide for Getting Your Act Together—which is hysterical, substantial, and a page-turner that’s hard to put down.

In this episode, I ask Kelly what inspired her to write her book, where she got her humor and insight from, and what her intention is with her book. She says, “I wanted to send the message that you’re never too old to change your mind.” Her book is light and uplifting for those who may be silently struggling with mental health and wellness.

We discuss:

    • How Kelly found inspiration from some of the toughest, darkest times of her life—and how humor got her through those tough times
    • Her passion for being a writer and a storyteller—someone who can get people to turn the pages and read “below the fold”
    • How Kelly was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety at an early age, and her experience as a failed mommy blogger
    • How people are making it through the day, thanks to being part of a community
    • The story of her dad taking her to a baseball game in the 90s (a time when it was “boys over here, girls over there”)—and how that experience created a bond with her dad, and brought about Kelly’s lifelong love of sports and baseball (she later got hired by the Boston Red Sox)
    • How people get “mired down in their own camp,” not wanting to hear any other ideas and wanting to be right (Kelly calls this “screaming into the void to other people who agree with me”)
    • How she played with format while writing her book, using light writing that’s like “coming up for air”

Plus, we discuss Kelly’s process for creating social media posts, and how her family helps her with that. She shares what life is like with her three boys who are 11, 8, and 6.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 534 – What It Means To Be a Leader02 Aug 202200:38:59
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_534-Effective_Leadership_w_Steph_Tuss.mp3

With everything going on in the country right now, we could all use more discussions on leadership. Today we’ve got Steph Tuss, CEO of Life is Now, Inc., on the podcast with her husband BT, and they’re discussing what it means to be a leader.

Many leaders today expect their team and employees to follow through on things, yet they themselves fail to follow through on their own expectations—because they’re not “being their word.” As a leader, you have to learn to lead yourself. In business, you either sink or swim. Leadership is about getting yourself to do the things you really don’t feel like doing, or that feel uncomfortable.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:

    • How Steph was called “bossy” as a kid, and how she embraced the role of a leader from an early age, starting with her standing up to bullies on the playground
    • How she became the face of the teacher’s union in California in her early 20s—and how her role as President of the Teacher’s Association came about because she was dissatisfied with how everything was run
    • Why Steph sees a “leader” not as someone who has authority, but as someone who represents other people; it’s not “you against them”—it’s you standing FOR them and WITH them
    • How Steph and Brandon’s weekly grocery budget was only $125, with nothing left over, while they were living in a small house in midwestern Wisconsin—and yet even at that time, Steph became aware of the need to invest in herself
    • How she transitioned away from the classroom and into a leadership position in her own nutrition business—and quickly ramped up to making six figures, thanks to working with several mentors
    • The leadership lessonsSteph learned along the way, especially when it comes to leading yourself

Steph believes life and business are both an adventure. As with any adventure, there are risks. There are up times, down times, blown tires, heat waves—but there are also beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The idea is for you to enjoy the journey, develop yourself along the way, and develop other people.

Regardless of what conflict happens along the way, it’s about knowing that “We’re going to be okay.” No matter what happens—every mistake, every misstep, every bad result—know that, “We’re going to be okay.”

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 533 – Mindset Monday’s – The Answer is Leadership01 Aug 202200:44:15
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_533-A_Lesson_on_Leadership.mp3

People often tell me they want to make a quantum leap in their business. They want to know when things will get easier. When you ask for a quantum leap, understand that you’re also asking for a quantum leap in problems. They go hand in hand. Success doesn’t necessarily go hand in hand with things being easier.

Many people are looking for a great leader in their company, but they’re looking for it out of desperation. It’s like, “Please, someone just take this mess I’ve created off my plate.” No good leader wants that. They want an opportunity to take their talent and skills, and do something great with it that makes a difference in people’s lives. They’re looking for the potential to fulfill their dream.

Sometimes people will say, “I need to hire my own Steph Tuss.” My CEO, Steph, and I always laugh when we hear that. I don’t think people understand exactly what Steph does, or to the extent in which she does it. Most people have no idea what she went through to become the leader she is today—to be able to run our company in the way she does now.

If you want to “find your own Steph”…ask yourself, are you prepared to be that leader yourself? Are you willing to put in the time, money, and dedication that’s required?

In today’s episode you’ll learn:

    • The history of how Steph and I began working together, starting back in 2009—and how she was a consummate student, with a strong desire and passion to learn
    • How it takes a certain level of commitment to become a great leader
    • Great leaders don’t just lead a company to a vision; they also manage and solve the “human” problems and conflicts that come up along the way
    • Just because you start your own business and have a product or service doesn’t make you a leader—leadership is something you must grow into, and be dedicated to mastering
    • Most people don’t want to quantum-leap their problems—they want to run away from them
    • A leader must walk in their own leadership (which is damn hard) before they can become a great leader of other people
    • All the things great leaders must be able to do

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 532 – Lessons on Leadership – Part IV – A Players vs B Players: How Tolerating an Adequate Team Will Destroy Your Business25 Jul 202200:34:07
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_532-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_IV-A_Players_vs_B_Players.mp3

In business, tolerations are dangerous. The things you tolerate are keeping you from growing and moving forward. If you’re not growing, you’re dying.

One of the biggest tolerations business owners have is an adequate team filled with B-players or C-players. These are people who show up, do what’s necessary, then go home. An adequate player is concerned with, “How can we stay the same?”—not with innovation or doing what’s best for the company. This puts the brakes on your business.

You don’t want an adequate team. Instead, you want A-players who are above adequate. A-players are hungry. They’re looking at where they can do more. They solve their own problems and think through solutions before bringing problems to you. Someone once told me that a deck of cards only has so many Aces, and the problem with most people is that they try to turn every other card into an Ace.

In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:

    • How most people are raised with the idea that you have to tolerate negativity, wrong thinking, or unnecessary suffering
    • How negative circumstances are an opportunity—like a flag pointing you in the direction of something that needs to be changed in your life
    • How once you fix or remove a toleration, you can have an amazing outcome on the other side of it
    • The reason businesses don’t grow (hint: it’s because they spend all their time trying to take a Queen, a King, a Ten, a Jack, a Deuce, and turn it into an Ace)
    • The key characteristics of A-players—and why you can’t coach desire
    • Why you must hire early, and hire based on where you’re going, not based on where you are
    • Why business owners get emotional when hiring or firing people, or holding them accountable—and one of the main things you have to learn in business is to master your emotions

My company helps people move through difficulties in their businesses. When someone is stuck, we we start by looking at what they’re tolerating. The first question we ask is, “What are you in resistance to?” or, “What are you tolerating?” At the root of a toleration is a resistance to change something.

Your underlying mindset must be to do what’s best for the company, even if this means firing or hiring people.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 531 – Lessons on Leadership – Part III – Communication & Accountability: Sunshine Your Mistakes to Make Them Your Greatest Successes18 Jul 202200:29:25
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_531-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_III-Conflict.mp3

Today my CEO, Steph Tuss, and I are talking about communication and conflict. Most people avoid conflict because of things that happened in their childhood. They associate it with mom and dad fighting over something…a bar fight or physical alteration … a winner and a loser… or with someone being made wrong. All of these things can feel painful, dangerous, and unsafe, especially when you’re a child.

Many of our clients are afraid to hold people accountable in their business, because they don’t want conflict. However, being conflict averse  or conflict avoidant can bring your business to its knees.

Conflict is actually a good thing for business, because it brings out the best ideas . Disagreement, debate, different opinions, and different personalities are what bring about innovation. This can only happen through effective communication.

In this episode you’ll learn:

    • How the outside world reinforces the idea that you shouldn’t want to participate in conflict—because you could be canceled for speaking your opinion
    • Fundamentally, the US was built on the concept of freedom—to have a different opinion, have a different idea, to be heard, and to let the best idea win the day
    • Meritocracy means the best idea wins—not the most important person in the room wins; and you can’t get good ideas without conflict
    • Why conflict is required for commitment and buy-in on your team (because you can’t get someone’s commitment if they won’t voice their opinions)
    • How Steph brings a new idea to our team and wants the team to poke holes in it, and tell her why it won’t work and what could go wrong—so that she can see it from a different perspective (this is how we find our most innovative ideas)
    • Why our team has instilled the belief of “sun-shining your mistakes,” which means turning the light on your mistake (not sweeping it under the rug or hiding it from anyone)—because mistakes are an opportunity to grow and learn something new, so you get a different result

We should all embrace conflict in a business setting, and learn to nurture it in our companies. We should develop a healthy attitude around conflict, instead of trying avoid it or to change it to sooth our internal, emotional issues that we have about it.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 530 – Lessons on Leadership – Part II – Hiring: Humble, Hungry & Smart11 Jul 202200:39:08
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_530-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_II-Hiring.mp3

Today, Steph Tuss, and I are talking about how to hire the best person for your business or team. Most people don’t understand how to hire or fire someone. People tend to hire people they like, or people who are like them—but this is a mistake.

If you want to win in business, you must hire the best person for the job. Instead of treating your business as a family, it’s better to treat it as a professional sports team. As “general manager coach,” your job is to make sure each position is manned by the absolute best.

In this episode, we discuss:

    • What Steph has learned on her journey of hiring, firing, and team building
    • How most people make decisions based on avoiding conflict and avoiding being uncomfortable
    • How our company made an enormous paradigm shift in hiring by thinking of ourselves as an elite sports team, rather than a family—because nobody wants to fire their family, hold a family member accountable, or have a hard conversation with them if they’re not meeting their KPIs
    • Specific things to look for when you’re hiring someone—and why you should find someone who’s “humble, hungry, and smart”
    • What being humble, hungry and smart actually looks like—and which questions to ask during the interview process to determine if someone has these traits
    • Why “sunshining” your mistakes creates psychological safety within an organization
    • Why you should pay attention to how a potential hire is showing up, because who a person is “being” is everything

Having the best player in each position ensures that you can create the right culture in your team. In our company, we say all the time, “What’s in the best interest of the company?” It’s easy to default into saying, “What’s in the best interest of me?” or “What’s most comfortable for me?” But decisions need to be made based on what’s best for the whole company.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 529 – Lessons on Leadership – Part I – Scaling: The Key to Scaling Your Business04 Jul 202200:35:01
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_529-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_I-Scaling.mp3

One of the most common things we hear growing up is, “Why should I hire someone to do it, if I can do it myself for free?” But as entrepreneurs, the only way we can grow is if we receive support and hire help.

Business owners only have so much time in a day. There are only so many tasks you can manage, and only so many people you can talk to. So if you want to grow and scale your business, you must delegate and allow yourself to receive support. The problem is, we’re raised with the idea that we must be a “self-made” person and do everything ourselves. This idea comes from the working class mindset.

In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:

    • Why people have difficulty being supported in their business—and why so many are a “one-person show,”  doing everything themselves and wearing all the hats (and this prevents them from scaling and growing)
    • How some people get their value from doing everything themselves at the expense of their self-esteem (and how this boils down to a “core wound” issue that says, “I’m not enough”)
    • Why my decision to sell my John Deere tractor and never cut my own grass again led to “more life” for three different people (myself included)
    • How hiring help gives other people and yourself an opportunity for growth—because it’s all for more life
    • How there’s shame associated with asking for help
    • Steph’s experience with starting a nutrition business with the goal of replacing her teacher’s salary—and how she discovered she could increase her earning capacity if she took specific things off her plate

Plus, we share an exercise to uncover the excuses you have that are rooted in fear, that are causing you NOT to hire the help you need. Learn the importance of scaling your business today.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 528 – Full Throttle Thursday – Soft White Underbelly: The Whittaker Family30 Jun 202200:32:15
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_528-Soft_White_Underbelly.mp3

“Soft White Underbelly” is a YouTube channel created by Mark Laita, a photographer who interviews and humanizes marginalized people in society. Many of the individuals featured have survived traumas and are living difficult, rough lives. It’s a huge series, with over a thousand videos uploaded onto the channel, interesting stories, beautiful photography, and millions of views.

In today’s episode, BT and I discuss one video in particular of the Whittakers, an inbred family from West Virginia whom Mark has interviewed multiple times. They come from a family that is obviously limited intellectually, physically, and verbally. Their understanding of things is limited. By watching, you can see that the most intelligent part of the family has the least amount of incest. The deeper the incest goes, the worse it deteriorates. The average person probably doesn’t want to see these people and will pretend they’re not there. But Mark brings their stories to the surface.

We discuss:

    • The range of non-traditional individuals Mark interviews on “Soft White Underbelly”
    • Why I’m on the fence about whether or not I like this YouTube channel—because most people are probably watching it for entertainment, not to help
    • How “Soft White Underbelly” reminds me of when I was young, traveling through different parts of the United States and saw homeless people, interviewed them, and talked to them, while trying to understand their plight
    • How people who live in abject poverty protect each other and defend the life they live
    • How, from a resourceful aspect, even homeless people are able to get what they need to survive
    • What I think Mark’s motives are for creating this channel, and whether or not it’s exploitative
    • How he takes the Whittakers to Walmart, gets them clothes and food, and buys them appliances

Jordan Peterson spoke on the “disgust factor” in human beings and how we seem to have a genetic reaction to certain things that impact our survival. A healthy individual will most likely be repulsed by certain things that would potentially harm them psychologically, emotionally, physically, or in other ways.

I’d encourage you to watch the video on the Whittakers and think about what your first reaction is—and why you’re reacting that way.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 527 – Think About What You’re Thinking28 Jun 202200:16:49
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_527-Think_About_What_Youre_Thinking.mp3

Very often, we have repetitive thoughts running through our mind over and over again where we can’t make decisions, and we’re stuck in fear. The voice in our head says we can’t or shouldn’t do something, and we’re reliving the past. It goes on and on, never-ending. One of the most common questions I get is, “How do I get this to stop?”

For a long time, my rescue dog, Ferguson, did crate spins where he constantly went in circles—because he was abused by his previous owner and was left in a crate constantly. A dog spinning like that is a physical representation of what happens in most people’s minds of what happens when we can’t come to a resolution about something. It becomes somewhat of a threat to us. Our mind doesn’t know what to do with it, because we’re not resolving it—so it spins.

In today’s episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why we don’t see this repetitive, “stuck” behavior in nature unless humans get involved
    • How my dog couldn’t get away from the people who were abusing it, but it still had an instinctive desire to move, because that’s in its DNA—that internal impulse is strong, regardless of the fact that it can’t go anywhere or logically think about it
    • When humans keep suffering the same problem over and over again, it’s very similar to a dog spinning in its crate
    • A lot of people live in the past
    • The way to resolve the mental “spinning” is to condition your mind to the truth around the situation; give it a resolve—separate yourself from the thought and bring truth to it
    • The illusion is that “because there’s movement, something’s happening,” but if there’s no clear outcome on your part, then you’re not really moving

When you’re experiencing the same problem over and over again—or having the same thought patterns repetitively—ask yourself, “Why am I thinking what I’m thinking? Why am I constantly repeating this thought process?”

To stop the spinning, ask, “What is my outcome? Where am I going? What’s the direction I’m moving in?” You must have a destination. The spinning will stop once you begin to move in a straight line. You have to retrain your mind to move in the direction you want it to go, every time.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 526 – Mindset Monday’s – What Makes You Feel Significant?27 Jun 202200:17:12
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_526-What_Makes_You_Feel_Significant_.mp3

Many years ago, my mentor Bob Proctor made an observation about great salespeople. He said, “If you look at any salesperson who is really good, they have a completely different belief system and a different level of intensity about them than your average salesperson.”

To be successful, salespeople and business people MUST have an intense level of belief in something. What do you believe in? What’s your mission and purpose? When you approach your business, your life, your sales, and everything else with a passion—with a different level of intensity—you can have a significant impact in what you do.

To understand this, we can look at people who do missionary work. They need a high level of intensity and belief to be able to go somewhere and convert people to Christianity (or whatever religion they have). The amount of rejection and ridicule these folks get is unbelievably intense.

In today’s episode you’ll learn:

    • How I felt like I was on a mission (even before I started my business) because there was a sense of purpose for me
    • Everyone has a specific purpose—given to them by God—and it’s the reason why we’re all here
    • Your job is to discover your purpose inside of yourself, and nobody else can tell you what it is
    • Your purpose, mission, and how you help people should be where you get your significance and fulfillment from—by doing whatever you’re put here to do
    • Why you should love the work you’re doing, no matter what you’re doing, and do it to the best of your ability—because that’s what you have to offer humanity
    • Human beings need the cycle of “ups and downs,” which are a part of the law of rhythm
    • Why we need to stay focused on our purpose—on the things we’re here to do—even during these strange times

When you know your purpose, you also know what NOT to get involved in, because it’s not part of your purpose.

Take the Next Step and the Universe Will Respond16 Dec 202400:26:34

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/ins.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM651_Take_the_Next_Step_and_the_Universe_Will_Respond.mp3

Every decision you make represents a step forward—and every step you take is a cause set in motion. When you make a decision, this causes God or the universe to respond and meet you where you are. But if you don’t take any steps forward because you don’t know all the steps—then you’ll stay stuck where you are.

For example, if you’re looking out your living room window, the view is pretty much always the same. But if you take one step out your front door, your view changes. Every time you take a step forward, you gain a completely new view of what’s in front of you. That view is totally different, and you can see things at different angles.

Success is the same way. You must take a step forward in order for new opportunities to reveal themselves.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why going slower pays bigger results (e.g., when you’re hunting, if you move too fast, you’ll scare the game off)
  • People often miss opportunities because they’re either making decisions to AVOID mistakes—or they’re rushing ahead, trying to get to the end result as fast as possible, while missing everything in between
  • Why many entrepreneurs quit school because they realize the rules they’re given at school don’t work for their dream—they’ve got to follow a different set of rules
  • The biggest rule entrepreneurs follow is that it’s okay (and actually desirable) to make mistakes
  • Life isn’t about avoiding mistakes—it’s about making as many mistakes as possible and learning from them

No matter what your dream or vision is, you’ll always get what you need in order to say yes for the completion of your vision. But to do that, you must take the next step that’s in front of you.

When God moves toward you, He’s giving you the how. Your job is to take the next step. If you don’t—because you don’t know the “how”—your life won’t change. You’ll become much like the person looking out the living room window and never changing the view.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 525 – Full Throttle Thursday – LIV Golf & Making Sense of Sportswashing23 Jun 202200:33:26
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_525-LIV_Golf_Sportswashing.mp3

In the US, sports are sacred. They’re a source of bringing excellence and inspiration to the world. The way we’ve built sports, they’ve become part of the backbone of what we stand for and who we are.

Recently there’s been a practice of “sportswashing”—where an individual, group, corporation, or government uses sport to improve their tarnished reputation. They host an event, purchase a sponsorship or a team, or participate in the sport itself.

The LIV Golf tour is a professional golf tour that’s financed by the “Public Investment Fund”—a sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia—which has a lot of oil money behind it. If someone shoots a 54 on this tour (which is virtually impossible), they’ll get $54 million. The PGA is up in arms about this, because they say they’re destroying golf by having this tour, and the PGA can’t compete with that.

In this episode, BT and I discuss:

    • Why sportswashing might crush golf as we know it—and why other sports might be next
    • How Saudi Arabia pumps money into a product (football—a.k.a soccer in the US) to make people forget about their transgressions, questionable activities, and human rights violations
    • How we’ve seen sports being hosted in places with horrendous human rights records—like the Olympics in Russia , the Olympics in China, and soon the World Cup in Qatar
    • How COVID changed everything, and more and more people are now playing golf]
    • How the younger generation is being targeted by sportswashing, because they’re not very tied to the past, and they’re motivated by money
    • Why people who are playing in the LIV Golf tour are receiving backlash for accepting “blood money—just by being paid by this Public Investment Fund from Saudi Arabia
    • How most of the public doesn’t realize how much business we do with countries that have human rights violations—and how the US being beholden to China for products and services makes us prime for a takeover

I think the more our sports get stripped away in the US—and it becomes more about the money than the sport itself—eventually, we’ll get to the place where the sport doesn’t matter anymore. Before you know it, your favorite NBA team or professional football team might be owned by money that’s not coming from here.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 524 – You Are the Author of Your Own Life Story – Part II21 Jun 202200:14:20
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_524-You_Are_The_Author-Part_II.mp3

In today’s episode I’m continuing where I left off, teaching from Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, The Voice of Knowledge.

All human beings live in a story of their own creation. That goes for your family members too. You live in your own story. Your mother lives in her own story. Your family members all have their own story, their own beliefs, and their perceived role that you have.

For example, your mother can swear that she knows you well, but is it true? She has no idea what you have in your mind. She only knows what she believes about you…which means she knows almost nothing.

In this episode you’ll learn:

    • You are a secondary character in another person’s story
    • As a secondary character, you play a role for someone (e.g., your mother sees you as her son or daughter—she creates an image of you, and she wants you to fit the image she creates)
    • Everyone in your immediate family has created a story about you—and a role—which began in your childhood
    • That story and role begin to change as time goes on
    • We live in an increasingly agitated society about what people believe—and many young people believe we can control what others believe, but they’re in for a rude awakening, because we cannot

Remember, everyone is dealing with their own individual story and how you show up in the role of that story. If you don’t show up according to someone’s story, they’ll feel hurt by you. They’ll try to make you fit their image of you. They’ll feel the need to control you, tell you what to do, and what not to do.

The best thing you can do is not to defend your point of view, but to change the conversation, enjoy that person’s presence, and love them anyway.

The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 523 – You Are the Author of Your Own Life Story – Part I20 Jun 202200:16:52
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_523-You_Are_The_Author-Part_I-MIDROLL.mp3

In The Voice of Knowledge, Don Miguel Ruiz has a chapter called “The Storyteller.” In it, he questions everything about his beliefs about himself and invites us to do the same.

Throughout our life, we all live in a story of our own creation, without even noticing it. We should question our beliefs about ourselves. Are they true? Or were these stories just passed down to us as “knowledge” from someone else? In today’s episode, I’m reading and teaching from this chapter.

You’ll learn:

    • How more than 90% of the concepts we have stored in our minds are based on lies—especially the concepts we believe about ourselves
    • How a “whole society of storytellers” existed before we were born—and how generation after generation of people shared their “knowledge” with us (which is really just stories of what they believe)
    • How the stories we are told (i.e., the knowledge we’re given) might not even be accurate—it’s often based on someone’s religion, superstition, or even witchcraft
    • We can’t ever truly know everything about a person; we can only know what we believe about them
    • There’s a whole side to every person that’s just theirs, that you don’t know (and I often tell people to “look at your secret thoughts” if you want to find out what you truly desire in life)
    • How you can reinvent yourself by changing the story you have about yourself

Our beliefs about who we are have incredible power over our life—even if those beliefs aren’t true. Ask yourself, “What do I believe about myself?” Most of us believe whatever the “storytellers” told us (i.e., our parents, teachers, society, etc.).

You have the power to change what you believe—and you can change the story you’re living. You’re the author of your own life.
