S2E2: How do young workers view pay?15 Sep 202400:27:34

Salaries need to be structured more flexibly to reflect broader aspirations.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get a headstart in your personal finance and career with The Straits Times.

Views on pay issues vary widely among young workers depending on their professional and life goals.

This was borne out in a survey of 1,000 young people commissioned by The Straits Times, carried out in May by market research firm Kantar and released in August.

In this episode, ST journalist Tay Hong Yi digs deeper into the implications of the results and underlying beliefs that give rise to different attitudes.

His guests are Dr Fermin Diez, a researcher on compensation issues with over 30 years of corporate experience, and young professional Jonathan Ng, who juggles being a business development manager with robotics company Otsaw while studying for a degree in marketing at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Highlights (click/tap above):

2:38 How has working and studying at the same time influenced Jonathan’s views on salary?

4:10 How have career norms shifted?

8:33 Are companies keeping up with these shifting norms in how pay is designed?

12:43 Why does satisfaction with one’s salary and work-life balance decline with age?

15:29 Disclosing salary details

22:14 How can employers deal with inter-generational differences on how pay is perceived?

S2E2: Bezos Earth Fund's menu for Asia: Bugs, slaughter-free meat and fermented protein14 Sep 202400:17:28

In the bid to make alternative protein palatable to the consumer, South-east Asian cuisine offers some advantages.

Synopsis: Every first and third Sunday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Home to glitzy bars and Michelin star restaurants, Singapore is a foodie paradise. It is a reputation that extends well beyond the dinner plate – and it is not just diners who are noticing.

The country’s research into ways of feeding the world in ways that are more beneficial for the climate and nature is also attracting global attention.

On Sept 5, the Bezos Earth Fund launched Asia’s first Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore, with a $39 million commitment from the Bezos Earth Fund. The fund was started by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as a philanthropic commitment to address the climate crisis.

What does this centre hope to do, and how will it help with Asia’s protein pivot? Green Pulse co-hosts Audrey Tan and David Fogarty get the lowdown from Dr Andy Jarvis, director of future of food at the Bezos Earth Fund.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:57 The link between food production, climate change and nature loss

4:27 Is producing alternative protein really more climate-friendly than regular animal-based protein?

5:34 What is the gap in alternative protein R&D identified by the Bezos Earth Fund?

9:23 What is the role of philanthropy in the great protein pivot toward sustainable source?

12:28 The focus for Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein in the National University of Singapore

S2E1: Investing with $100 a month as an undergrad? Why not!01 Sep 202400:31:50

Start early, compound your wealth, and try not to beat the market.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get a headstart in your personal finance and career with The Straits Times.

Finance literacy experts always tell us to “start young” so we can make full use of the effect of compounding and grow our wealth from a young age.

But how early is early enough for first-time, young investors? Can an undergraduate without a full-time job start investing?

Crucially, if someone has just $100 a month to invest, what can they do with that amount?

In this episode, ST business correspondent Sue-Ann Tan also looks at how university investing clubs help undergraduates to start growing their money, and the first investments that they can buy to begin.

Her guests are Associate Professor of Finance Matthew Dearth from NTU who brings 30 years of finance experience, and NTU undergraduate Victor Tan, who has invested since age 18.

The NTU Investment Interactive Club helps to link students to the finance community and hone their practical investing skills. It was founded in 1999 and now has over 5,000 members.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:30 How did Victor start investing at 18?

4:53 What’s the recommended age for people to start investing?

9:25 What products should people buy as a first investment?

12:17 Should we try to beat the market or do individual stock picking?

16:06 The biggest investment mistakes our guests have made

21:27 Where do you get your investing advice or knowledge from?

Old vs young, abled vs disabled, woman vs man.

Synopsis: Every first Monday of the month, listen to the Work Talk podcast to help you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.

Labels invariably affect workplace policies and work opportunities today. Why do we put labels on others?  Do Singapore workplaces pay lip service to inclusivity? Are Human Resources teams doing enough? With a fast-ageing Singapore, are we about to see real change at the workplace?

Join me and my special co-host this week, communications executive Jonathan Tiong, as we speak to sociologists Professor Paulin Tay Straughan and Dr Issac Lim.

Prof Straughan is dean of students at the Singapore Management University, and Issac is the founder of Anthro Insights, a consultancy that provides evidence-based human insights to help organisations change.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:40 When is stereotyping not a trend?

8:30 Why bother looking at it?

13:05 Is inclusivity just lip service? HR, can you do more?

16:35 Do consumers have a part to play?

20:40 Older, disabled colleagues don't pull their weight. True?

24:00 Humanistic workplaces, why should we care?

S1E61: Why women should protect their hearts against cardiovascular disease: Health Check Ep 6101 Jun 202100:19:03

Health Check Ep 61: Why women should protect their hearts against cardiovascular disease

    19:02 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

This episode tackles the often underestimated risk of cardiovascular disease in women, and how the symptoms of this disease can differ in women.

ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo hosts Professor Carolyn Lam, a senior consultant at the Department of Cardiology and the director of Women’s Heart Health at the National Heart Centre Singapore.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women and is responsible for 35% of deaths in women yearly. Studies have also showed that heart disease is deadlier in women than men, and can affect women at all ages, and particularly after menopause.

In the Lancet Women and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Commission published in mid-May, clinicians called for urgent action to reduce burden of cardiovascular disease in women.

This global report is curated by 17 leading expert ambassadors from 11 countries, and one of these Lancet Ambassadors for Women’s Heart Health in this prestigious study is Professor Lam herself, who is also the sole representative from Asia.

    1. Trend of heart attacks among women younger than 55 - yet it remains understudied, under-diagnosed, less recognised and treated (2:47)
    2. Global death rate from breast cancer is only a tenth of that from heart disease and stroke among women (4:17)
    3. How a woman can also suffer classic chest pains like men or atypical symptoms during a suspected cardiac arrest (9:26)
    4. Know your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels if you're nearing the age of menopause of about 50 (14:24)
    5. Differences between men and women when they complain about heart-related issues (16:01)

S1E51: Fishy business on the high seas: Green Pulse Ep 5130 May 202100:17:05

Green Pulse Ep 51: Fishy business on the high seas

    17:05 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Across the globe, millions of people rely on fishing for jobs and income, with many fishermen finding it increasingly tough to earn a living due to shrinking catches. They have to compete not only with the impact of climate change and industrial fishing fleets but also illegal fishing operations often controlled by powerful figures far away.

This multi-billion dollar illegal industry is also linked to human slavery, tax evasion and drugs and arms smuggling. But recently, efforts by Interpol and governments are catching up with the illegal fishing kingpins.

In this episode, ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty speak with Mr Peter Horn, project director for Ending Illegal Fishing at Pew Trusts, which works closely with Interpol to clamp down on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

    They discuss the following points:

    1. How the illegal fishing trade works (3:41)
    2. Other crimes associated with illegal fishing (6:05)
    3. How can consumers make the sustainable choice? (8:57)
    4. Working with Interpol to stop illegal fishing (10:17)
    5. Can the illegal fishing trade be stopped? (14:55)

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are back together and the #PopVultures have all the juice on the Hollywood power couple. Power Play Ep 1: Can US-China competition save the planet's environment?

      9:57 mins

Synopsis: Once a month, join Charissa Yong and Danson Cheong - ST’s US and China correspondents respectively based in Washington DC and Beijing - as they both look at various facets of the US-China rivalry and its implications for Asia.

      They chat about the following:

      1. Why scepticism over China's climate ambitions are misplaced (1:06)
      2. How the US is balancing competition and cooperation with China on climate change (4:00)
      3. Why part of the US view is political as the Biden administration is selling renewable energy as a way to create jobs, since the switch from fossil fuels will cost a lot of jobs (4:27)

S1E50: Are electric vehicles really green? - Green Pulse Ep 5016 May 202100:23:08

Green Pulse Ep 50: Are electric vehicles really green?

      23:08 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Singapore wants to decarbonise its transport sector, as part of its goal of reaching net-zero emissions as soon as viable in the second half of the century. The Republic plans to phase out all internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040, and has announced initiatives to improve uptake of electric vehicles, including tax incentives and the roll-out of more charging points.

But if electric vehicles still draw electricity from the national grid, which in Singapore is still fossil-based, are they really more environmentally friendly?

Green Pulse hosts Audrey Tan and David Fogarty chat with Mr Goh Chee Kiong, chief executive of Charge+ , the green mobility arm of Singapore clean energy company Sunseap Group, as they discuss the following points:

      1. If electric vehicles draw power from the grid, which is still fossil-based, are they really more environmentally friendly than those that run on petrol? (1:03)
      2. Other than fuel source, what other factors make an EV greener than an internal combustion engine vehicle? (7:05)
      3. The mining of raw materials for electric vehicles is not known for its environmental credentials. How can pressure on the environment be reduced in the manufacture of electric vehicles? (10:19)
      4. Other than benefits to the environment, what are the advantages of electric vehicles to human health? (14:00)
      5. Pain points of widespread electric vehicle adoption in Singapore (17:25)

Listen to Ep 45: Can an electric vehicle push and petrol duty hike green Singapore's land transport sector? https://omny.fm/shows/green-pulse-1/can-an-electric-vehicle-push-and-petrol-duty-hike

          S1E46: Shane Pow & Channel 8’s succession crisis: #PopVultures Ep 4607 May 202100:25:56

#PopVultures Ep 46: Shane Pow & Channel 8’s Succession Crisis

          25:56 mins

Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood scene.

This week, #PopVultures Jan Lee and Yeo Sam Jo give an update to the previous episode: Elvin Ng has responded to Dasmond Koh and Angel Lim, who claimed that he flared up at Lim on set.

Then, they move on to another local actor - Shane Pow - who recently had his contract with Mediacorp terminated after he was charged with drink driving. Pow will also be replaced midway through the upcoming series The Heartland Hero, with James Seah taking over the second male lead role.

Jan and Sam Jo talk about his chances of mounting a comeback and how Mediacorp's Channel 8 seems to be in a succession crisis with its roster of young actors.

They also discuss other notable cases of actor replacements due to scandals, including Ji Soo in River Where The Moon Rises and Kevin Spacey in All The Money In The World. Finally, they share their thoughts on whether replacing Pow mid-series will work out for the best.

Here's a quick peek at what they cover:

          1. Elvin Ng's response to Dasmond Koh and Angel Lim (0:19)
          2. Shane Pow's drink driving charge and James Seah (1:49)
          3. Channel 8's succession crisis (8:23)
          4. Actor replacements in Korea, Hong Kong and Hollywood (15:17)
          5. Will replacing Shane Pow work? (20:32)

Letter From The Bureau Ep 1: Getting to know Little Singapore in the south of India

          16:08 mins

Synopsis: Join The Straits Times's foreign desk editor Bhagyashree Garekar in this podcast series as she talks about life as it goes on, amid, and in spite of the headlines, with one of ST’s 30-odd correspondents in 15 cities across the Asia-Pacific, the US and Europe every month. They will share with you some of the more interesting things they are reporting on from the countries they are based in.

In this episode, she hosts Rohini Mohan - ST's India correspondent - about a unique region in south India where the people have strong historical, economic and emotional ties to Singapore.

Speaking Of Asia Ep 1: Do not mock India, learn from its Covid-19 troubles

            9:26 mins

Synopsis: Join The Straits Times' associate editor Ravi Velloor, in this series of podcasts based on his weekly columns on Asian issues, as he distils his experience from four decades of covering the continent.

Ravi argues that while much of the global media has focused on the shortcomings of the Indian government, he sees this as a hybrid, with the effects of the coronavirus as an act of nature - made worse by human errors and emotions, complacency, power play, religion and class issues, and of course, utter misgovernance.

He covers the following reasons for India's seeming Covid collapse as the world watches on:

            1. 1st factor: The complacency virus (2:50)

            2. 2nd factor: Why and how the Indian elections became coronavirus super spreader events (4:19)
            3. 3rd factor: How an ancient Hindu bathing ritual in the Ganges that takes place every 12 years, became another super spreader event (5:53)
            4. 4th factor: Only about 2% of Indians vaccinated with their second shot (7:03)
            5. Paying tribute to the real heroes of India's underfunded and collapsing health sector (8:00)

S1E9: 'I've been told South Korea's not the country for my belief,' says a Korean Muslim02 May 202100:14:06

Synopsis: The Invisible Asia Podcast is a special edition 9-episode series in which The Straits Times casts the spotlight on people and communities living in the shadows of their societies where they exist largely unseen and unheard of.

The Straits Times' South Korea correspondent Chang May Choon closes our series as she casts the spotlight on the South Korean Muslim minority. As many as 3,000 South Koreans convert to Islam each year, according to the Korea Muslim Federation.

But a lack of understanding of Islam among the country’s general populace, contributes to the daily difficulties that they face for their belief.

In this podcast, listen to translated testimonies from South Korean Muslim converts Song Bo-ra, Lee Seul and Yu Hong-jong. Our series' narrator is Tan Jia Ning.

            1. How Bo-ra counters misconceptions about the way the hijab is viewed (2:01)
            2. Lee Seul still uneasy in public after her own conversion to Islam (4:33)
            3. South Korean government working to change its people's mindsets about Islam as Muslim tourist numbers rose pre-Covid (5:51)

            4. Hong-jong on the difference between the way Christians and Muslims are viewed in South Korea (8:14)

            5. Booming demand for halal Korean food from Muslim students, workers and tourists (9:28)
            6. Lee Seul and Song Bo-ra helping to make South Korea a more Muslim-friendly country (11:20)

Home-grown singer, songwriter, and producer Rangga Jones is the tenth guest in this music channel.

Synopsis (headphones recommended): Each month, The Straits Times invites music acts to its podcast studio.

In the 10th episode of Music Lab, ST's music correspondent Eddino Abdul Hadi hosts home-grown singer, songwriter, and producer Rangga Jones.

He might not be a household name in Singapore, but in recent years, the 27-year-old has been steadily building up a fanbase in the region with his R&B/pop songs.

On streaming services, the Singapore-based singer has racked up millions of plays, mostly from fans in the Philippines and Indonesia, where he was born. Call Me, a song first released in 2022, has 23 million streams on just Spotify alone.

The song also caught the attention of Ruka, a member of South Korean girl group Babymonster, who added it to her public Apple Music playlist.

Jones, who started releasing music in 2019, dropped his first full-length album, Emotions, in late 2023. He has already started on new projects, and recently released his latest single, Pushing Me Away.

In this episode of Music Lab, he sang live renditions of Call Me as well as Not Good Enough, one of the songs off Emotions.

            Highlights (click/tap above):

0:45 - On having K-pop star Ruka from Babymonster as a fan

S1E49: Can aquaculture solve the seafood “seaspiracy”? - Green Pulse Ep 4902 May 202100:20:39

Green Pulse Ep 49: Can aquaculture solve the seafood “seaspiracy”?

            20:38 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change in this podcast series.

The recently-released Netflix film “Seaspiracy”, which calls on people to stop eating seafood, has generated widespread debate. Supporters say the film highlights the impact of industrial fishing on marine life, bringing public attention to an aspect of the trade that not many usually think about. But others have lambasted the British filmmaker Ali Tabrizi for inaccurate facts and figures used to support the arguments made.

In this episode, ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty speak with Professor Dean Jerry, an aquaculture expert from the Singapore campus of the James Cook University, about the implications of seafood consumption and the role of aquaculture in feeding the world.

            They discuss the following points:

            1. Is the demand for seafood really emptying the oceans? (2:43)
            2. How can Singapore consumers identify sustainable wild-caught seafood? (6:55)
            3. What is the role of aquaculture in feeding the world? (9:33)
            4. But aquaculture does not have a pristine reputation, so can it be made more environmentally-friendly? (13:28)
            5. Can there still be plenty of fish in the sea, while ensuring that communities can continue to get access to seafood? (17:25)

Invisible Asia Ep 9: 'Many Koreans have big misunderstandings about Islam'

                14:06 min

                11:26 mins

Synopsis: This is a special episode of The Straits Times' video series The Big Story.

Primary Six pupils will not need to achieve perfect scores to get into top secondary schools when the new PSLE scoring system takes effect this year, based on entry scores for 139 secondary schools released on Tuesday (April 27) by the Education Ministry.

The indicative cut-off scores are based on the new PSLE scoring system, which will be used for the first time by this year’s Primary 6 cohort to gain entry to secondary schools next year. Senior education correspondent Sandra Davie advises parents on how to choose the right school for their children, instead of the top school.

                8:38 mins

Synopsis: The Straits Times tackles the biggest sports talking points every month.

Moraes talks about how he nearly became drawn into a life of crime as a youth, after being abandoned as a newborn baby in an alley on the streets of Brasilia. He also details how discovering jiujitsu helped him toward a brighter future.

                They discuss:

                1. A difficult early life, and how jiujitsu saved Moraes (1:51)
                2. Giving back to the community in Brasilia (4:40)
                3. What’s next for Moraes? (6:26)

Globally, sea-level rise is increasing at a faster pace, threatening Asia's coastal megacities and low-lying island nations such as Singapore. To discuss this urgent issue, this webinar by The Straits Times will look at the latest science and projections of sea-level rise and solutions, including nature-based options, to hold back the seas.

Health Check Ep 58: Picking an IP insurer with a good panel of doctors

                  20:35 mins

Synopsis: This is a fortnightly podcast series on Wednesdays by The Straits Times that aims to help you make sense of health matters that affect you.

Many private sector doctors are upset with Integrated Shield plan insurers for maintaining panels of doctors that they call “highly exclusive”. These panels are one of the measures that IP insurers have undertaken in order to reduce their costs, but doctors say that the IP sector created their own problem and should not penalise them for it.

Doctors have failed to get on the panel, even though they adhere to the fee benchmarks published by the Ministry of Health.

In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks with Dr Wong Seng Weng, the medical director and consultant medical oncologist at The Cancer Centre, who sits on several IP panels.

He shares some tips on how one can go about picking the IP insurer with a good and reasonable panel of doctors. They discuss the following points:

                  1. Dr Wong's own experience of being selected for such panels (1:30)
                  2. Why seeing a "non-panel" doctor could hit your pocket more now (7:00)
                  3. What are correct clinical quality measures? (9:08)
                  4. How can policy holders tell if the panel provided by an IP insurer is good (11:20)
