TSORR Radio Show S7E48 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 28 November 2024. Thank you all very much for a record-breaking week for TSORR podcast downloads. Your support is greatly appreciated. This week’s show featured some great new music. Check out the tracks from Crossbone Skully, Storace, and Opeth. There is something for everyone here: rock, metal, ballads, and blues. As always, it’s all about the guitars.          

On the Twisted Triplets, we had three tracks called ‘Ugly’, Therapy?, and Soil, and of course, The Stranglers did the honours. In the Evolution of Judas Priest, we are in 1978, and the band has made their first flawless album. From here onwards, they are writing Heavy Metal history. Once again, we had Joe Bonamassa in the Immortals slot. I am amazed he has only featured twice.

TSORR Radio Show S7E47 aired on 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 21 Nov 2024.  We are on the downhill run to the end of Season 7.  As always the show is drenched in guitars and features some of the greatest bands in the world and some that maybe new to you.  Enjoy.

TSORR Radio Show S7E46 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 14 November 2024. The show was jam-packed with rock and metal. It featured all the usual features PLUS an interview with South African death metal merchants The Falling Prophets.      

On the Twisted Twins, we had two tracks called ‘Holy Roller’, one from Nazareth and the other from Mother Love Bone.

In the Evolution of Judas Priest, we listened to a track from Sad Wings of Destiny.  The Immortals slot was bluesy this week, we got to hear Eric Clapton showing us where his reputation comes from with a track called ‘Key to the Highway’ off the Derek & the Dominos album.

TSORR Radio Show S7E45 aired on 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 7 Nov 2024.  We were celebrating on TSORR.  The US election is over and we got through it without a third world war.   

This episode’s Twisted Twins featured two tracks called ‘Eye of the Storm’. These are totally different songs; only the name is common, and in this case, they both come from German bands. We started a new cycle of Evolutions. For the next 19 weeks, we will follow the evolution of the mighty Judas Priest. George Thorogood cracked the Immortals slot with ‘One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer’.

TSORR Radio Show S7E44 aired on 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 31 Oct 2024.  Halloween already, that means 8 more shows until 2025.  Wow!!!!  This show was jam-packed with tons of Rock and Metal and we had a great time live the TSORR Central chat.    There was a lot of new music from bands like Doomsday Outlaw, The New Roses, and Jelusic.  

This episode’s Twisted Triplets had 3 different tracks called ‘Dead Man Walking’.  We had a choice of 5 but decided to stick with 3:  Onslaught, Elegant Weapons, and The Confession.  We finished the Evolution of Iron Maiden with a track off their last album in their catalogue; Senjutsu.  Next week we start with the Evolution of Judas Priest.

TSORR Radio Show S7E43 aired on 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 24 Oct 2024.  The 'artists featured' list at the bottom of the post is in order of play if you are jumping around.  We said cheers and RIP to Iron Maiden’s first vocalist Paul Di Anno, we checked out new releases from Michael Schenker Group, Massive Wagons, Myles Kennedy, and The New Roses and chatted with South African guitar hero Jackson Colt.  His latest track, 'Monsoon', produced by Mark Haze, is amazing as you will hear.   

The Twisted Triplets featured 3 different tracks titled ‘Never Surrender’.  We heard from Saxon, Risingfall , and Blackstone Cherry.  We had Avenged Sevenfold in the Immortals slot with ‘A Little Piece of Heaven’ and the Diabolical Challenge took a look at 4 albums filed under the ‘R’ section in the record shop.

TSORR Radio Show S7E42 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 17 October 2024. The show was dedicated to the memory of Athol Curtis, who was a big part of TSORR and sadly passed away a year ago to the day. This show was a celebration of the rock and roll spirit of this uniquely special human being. He lives on through the awesome music that we both love so much.

This week we were fortunate to have an artist in ‘The Local Hero’ slot – Garry McCluskey aka GAZ has a brand new track called ‘My New Skin’ and I chatted to him about it.

Immortals this week came from Guns ‘n’ Roses with “Breakdown”, a most amazing track off Use Your Illusion II.  Axl Rose, at this stage of his career, was probably the biggest rock star in the world.  One thing that he doesn’t get enough recognition for in my view is his incredibly good lyrics.  This track is a great example.

Welcome to another episode of The Story of Rock and Roll Show.  S7E25 went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 20 June 2024.    This week the show came to you from Sedgefield in the Western Cape.  There is a very different vibe down here, nothing like the madness and dysfunctionality of Johannesburg, I could live here.  Anyway,  back to the show, we had a ton of good stuff as we always do, it's a good mix of everything.

Immortals this week came from Deep Purple, the track was ‘Mistreated’ off the Burn album.  I doubt anyone will argue about its Immortal status.  Richie Blackmore wrote it just before he left the band and David Coverdale sang it on the Burn album where this version comes from.  Blackmore took it with him to Rainbow and Ronnie James Dia did it justice for many years.  I had the pleasure of hearing Glenn Hughes do it solo on acoustic guitar with Kings of Chaos at Sun City.

S7E15 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 11 April 2024.     TSORR was on Myoli Beach in Sedgefield for this episode so the view was great.   

This week's Twisted Twins featured tracks called ‘Winter’.  We looked to a local band called Crash Car Burn for the first track and then went back to the amazing Goats Head Soup album for a Rolling Stones song called Winter.  It’s interesting to note that this is one of the few Rolling Stones that Keith Richard did not play on.  The song was written and recorded by the two Mick’s – Jagger and Taylor.     

Immortals was courtesy of Avenged Sevenfold, the title track off The Stage, the last good album they made before they went mental and served up the biggest turd in the history of metal.  off the Born to Run album, we took a listen to ‘Jungleland’.  Springsteen is at his finest on this groundbreaking album but it’s Clarens Clemons’ sax solo that really makes it Immortal.

Immortals, a track over 7 minutes showcasing an artist's brilliance, came off the Born to Run album.  It is a track called ‘Jungleland’.  Springsteen is at his finest on this groundbreaking album but it’s the late Clarens Clemons’ sax solo that really makes it special.  And the lyric!  Never forget the lyrics when it comes to The Boss.

S7E12 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 21 March 2024.  It was full throttle out of the gate with Dio and ‘Evil Eyes’.  We had some new music from Dan Patlansky, Judas Priest and Bruce Dickenson.  Most interesting is a new single from Vended.  I am really digging Vended a lot, sons of Slipknot, literally, Griffin Tayor and Simon Crahan doing their parents proud.   

To remind you to get tickets for next year's Green Day, The Offspring, and Fokofpolisikar concert in Cape Town and JHB we again took a quick track from each of them.   This weeks Twisted Twins featured a song called 'Lost in Hollywood'.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.    

This week’s Immortals feature was incredible.  Mark Knopfler has assembled 60 musicians, mostly guitarists (he’s got Ringo and his son Zak on drums and Sting on Bass), and it is a veritable who’s who of guitar.  The track has been recorded by Mark Knopfler and Friends to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  It’s a new version of 'Going Home' (Theme from Local Hero) and, it includes contributions from among others Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Springsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mc Laughlin, Brian May, the list goes.  Incredible.

S7E11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 March 2024.  Last week we invented a new feature which, thanks to some audience participation, has become known as Twisted Twins.  It involves playing two songs with the same name but by different bands.  We continued with Twisted Twins on this show as well as the usual favourites The Diabolical Challenge and The Immortals.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.  There is also a new Pearl Jam album coming and we took a listen to the title track 'Dark Matter.  Plus we have great news!  Green Day, The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar coming to SA in January 2025.

Season 7 Episode 9 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 29 Feb 2024.  We had a full house in TSORR Central and the show was an absolute pleasure to do.   It was a good mix of classics, brand new tracks, heavy, not so heavy, something for everyone.

S7E8 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 19h00 on 22 Feb 2024.  It was touch and go with a fiber failure an hour before the show, big well done to the guys at Vodacom Fibre for sorting it out in time.  We started with a bit of ACDC and ‘Overdose’ off the Let There Be Rock album and just kept on building from there. 

This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about was the original version of Am I Evil by Diamond Head.  You may only know the Metallica version and they have indeed made it famous, but it all started here.  I went into the story in a bit of detail because it is one of the best examples of a win–win ever.  Everyone involved scored because of this track and it really is iconic.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each:

Welcome to Episode 4 of Season 7.  S7E4 went out live at 19h00 on 25 Jan 2024 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Amazing to think that the first month of 2024 is done, where does the time go?  We started gently with some Iron Maiden and the show progressed from there.  We had new releases from Green Day, Saxon, Judas Priest, and Ryan Adams.  The year is starting off well.    

The Immortals slot, a track over 7 min long, went to Deep Purple’s ‘Knocking at Your Back Door' off their 1984 Perfect Strangers album.  This album was the reunion of the celebrated Mk II line-up and did very well for them.

S7E3 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 Jan 2024.   

It ended up being one of my favourite shows ever.  The end was gloriously spontaneous, and the people tuned in were just awesome.  Going round the world in 40 min at the end of the show was amazing, unplanned and a great way to say goodnight.

Episode 2 of Season 7 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 11 Jan 2024.   

The Immortals feature this week is from Rush, a track called By-tor and the Snow Dog off their second album Fly By Night.  This was the first album they made after Neal Peart joined the band after the resignation of John Rutsey.  The track consists of 8 parts and gave the world the first glimpse of the direction Rush were taking going forward.  There was a little technical glitch after Yngwie J. Malmsteen, it comes back after about 45 seconds so just jump it or wait it out, apologies for that. 

The Diabolical Challenge checked out 4 bands found under ‘B’ in the record collection.  We took a listen to tracks off Mob Rules, Badlands, Nebraska, and Boston:

The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had:

Well, we made it, welcome to the end of 2023 and the last episode of Season 6.  As has become traditional on TSORR we use the last show of the season to review the year and listen to as much of the music released as time allows.  It was a good year for Rock Music and you will hear that there has been a serious resurgence in classic metal.  Last year I had new 64 albums so this year is 30% down, I guess that may be linked to Covid, bands can tour again and many of them recorded during lockdown.  Anyway, there was some really good music.  Check it out.  And thank you for the support, see you in 2024 for Season7

This is a special episode.  The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six.  On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023.  The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not.  The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is.  Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support.  I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come.  

We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash.  There were just too many bands and songs to recognize.  I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show.  

We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time.  The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush’s masterpiece ‘2112’
