Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This time of year can be great – but also quite intense. There are more expectations on us, more emotions at play, and more stories circling in our heads about family, money, the future, and how we think we should think and feel about those things.

Today’s episode looks at a simple idea from the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi that cuts straight through all that noise: you are not your thoughts.

What’s interesting about this century old spiritual teaching is how it aligns with modern psychology and points to the same wisdom: to stop wrestling with your thoughts and instead change your relationship to them.

We talk about how to do that in a world that seems so full of anxiety and fear and how to remain present when the mind is trying to run the show (which, around Christmas time, it usually is).

Making a Living Whilst Making Your Art: The Curator Method with Anne Alexander-Sieder30 Oct 202500:56:11

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This week we are joined by Anne Alexander-Sieder - an American actor, podcaster and coach based in Germany.

She’s someone who rebuilt her creative life from the ground up. After taking a sixteen-year break from acting and living far from the industry, she found her way back through a process she calls The Curator Method.

She’s since gone on to found Act Bold Training and create The Escape Route Challenge - a five-day journey that helps artists build better connections, break through obstacles, and find the people who can take them to the next level.

In this conversation, we explore some of the biggest questions every artist faces:

How do we make a living while staying true to our art?
How do we balance family, career, and creative purpose?
What’s the difference between our job - the thing that pays the rent - and our work - the thing that feeds the soul?

Anne shares how the solution to most of our creative struggles can often be found inside the problem itself - and why the secret to getting what we need is often found through service and giving.

We also talk about getting off the hamster wheel of comparison, celebrating the small wins, and choosing thoughts that serve our artistry rather than our ego.

This is a conversation about how to stay connected to your purpose, even when life pulls you in a dozen different directions.

Character Archetypes in Mythology25 Jul 202401:14:45

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This week we’re crossing the threshold and embarking on a journey through the timeless world of character archetypes.

Have you ever wondered why certain characters resonate so deeply with us? Why we find ourselves rooting for the hero, delighted by the trickster, or guided by the mentor? It’s no coincidence that these types of characters appear time and time again. They very often form the backbone of ancient stories and myths that have shaped human consciousness for centuries.

Appreciating the function of these archetypes can transform our understanding of characters, whether you’re an actor, writer, or simply a lover of stories.

In this episode, we unpack each of the archetypes, giving examples, and find out how we can spot them, not just in our favourite plays, movies and tv shows but also in the people around us, in our daily life.

Body Language for Actors03 Jul 202401:01:05

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

They say that actions speak louder than words and we’re putting that to the test this week as we explore the topic of non-verbals, commonly known as body language.

Understanding and mastering body language can really help an actor deliver a performance that is rooted in truth and that resonates deeply with the audience. But how do we do unlock the silent power of body language to effectively convey what’s going on inside the character and take our acting to the next level?

Finding the Right Agent with Special Guest - Brian Patacca27 Jun 202401:18:31

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

To kick off our third season of the podcast, we chat to the wonderful Brian Patacca.

Brian helps actors get what they want without all the struggle. He’s helped 724 actors find representation and is even known as “The Representation Whisperer”.

Through his wildly popular online courses (Audition Magnet® and #agentgoals®) and entertaining podcast, Brian teaches actors how to market themselves authentically, use gratitude to open doors, and book the roles they were born to play.

His coaching clients include Tony Award-winners, Broadway stars, Series Regulars, filmmakers, writers, and stand-up comedians. He proves that when they follow their purpose instead of playing by a tired set of industry rules (read: limiting beliefs), they can skip the drama, generate momentum, and build excitement around who they are and what they love to do the most.

Brian brings a spiritual and grounding approach to the business, rooted in his training as a non-denominational Reverend. Not only does he promise the how-to’s, he has zero doubt that acting is your divine birthright.

One of the big themes of this podcast is how acting and life are completely intertwined – the craft of acting isn’t just about performance, it’s about understanding yourself, other people, and the world we live in.

And that’s exactly what this conversation is about. In just a few weeks, John will be running a brand new course. And this isn’t just another acting workshop – it’s something far richer, giving you the practical tools to understand yourself on the deepest level.

So, whether you’re an artist looking to free yourself up creatively, or someone who just wants to live with more clarity, joy and purpose – what we’re talking about today is for you.

In the episode, we unpack what the course is all about, go through the Three Higher Purposes of Human Life that forms the spine of the course, and how its lessons apply both on stage and screen and in everyday life.

The Psychology of Emotions27 Jul 202301:20:41

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

Emotions are universal – they transcend language and culture, and we all experience them every day. Why is it then they can often make us feel out of control? Why do we get overly angry or sad about things we think are unimportant to us? Why do our emotions sometimes lead us to act in ways we later regret?

For the actor, how can we harness our ability to feel emotion and create truthful characters we can all relate to?

In this episode, we discuss what psychologists and experts have to say about emotions, how they manifest in us and how we can better understand our own experience of them.

Pursuing Acting Later In Life with Special Guest - Duncan Hess18 May 202300:54:44

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This week we welcome another guest to the podcast – British actor, Duncan Hess.

Duncan first made a name for himself as a director, working for over 40 years making television for the BBC. Although acting was always his first love, it wasn’t until well into his late 50s that Duncan decided to pursue an acting career professionally.

After graduating from Central School of Speech and Drama, Duncan has worked steadily in theatre these past few years, and recently realised a long-held ambition of working at the National Theatre.

In our chat, we discuss where Duncan’s love of acting originated from, his experience of auditioning and studying at drama school, and what it’s been like finding his feet as an actor later in life.

In the second part of the episode, John shares a list of practical steps actors of any age can take to help break into the industry.

Do you ever find yourself feeling superior or inferior? Are you constantly thinking about the past or the future, or feel the need to label yourself and others?

It could be your ego interfering with your life. So, how do we quieten that voice in our head and is the ego all bad?

This week, we discuss what the ego is, the role it plays in our life and how we can learn to live with it.

Later on in the chat, we discuss why this knowledge is important for the actor, and what qualities we can embody that work as an antidote to egotistical thinking.

The audition is the all-important step for an actor landing the role, whether in person or more commonly now by self-tape - but very often actors dread the process and don’t set themselves up to do a good job.

It can be scary stepping into the unknown territory of an audition and it’s easy to feel judged. However, the truth is that being able to audition well is an essential skill to develop for furthering your career as an actor.

John and Jordan discuss how best to prepare for auditions, maintain good mental health, the importance of assessing your work, and how to deal with rejection.

Building a Successful Career with Special Guest Richard Brake23 Sep 202401:30:27

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

We conclude our third season of the podcast by chatting to the brilliant, Richard Brake.

If you don’t recognise the name, you will most definitely recognise the face as Richard has starred in a ton of movies and tv series over the last 20 years. After landing a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Richard began to break out in the 2005 film Doom, Steven Spielberg’s Munich, and Hannibal Rising.

Since then, he’s had a vast and varied career, not just in movies but in television as well, appearing in Peaky Blinders, Ray Donnovan, The Mandalorian, and most famously as the Night King in the HBO series, Game of Thrones.

Richard is a fantastically versatile actor but he’s particularly adept at playing villains, monsters and psychopaths, as is evident in his work in horror films like Mandy, Barbarian, and as fan favourite Doomhead in Rob Zombie’s 31.

Despite being scarily good in his horror roles, Richard has a warm, down-to-earth, lovely nature. It was especially good to get to chat with him as he worked with John early on in his career, studying the Spiritual Psychology of Acting.

We discuss the impact that had on his life as well as the turning points that helped him build the career he has today.

Our final part is all about Life Scripts – the unconscious life plans we pick up in childhood, often without even knowing it. We’ll be breaking down the different types of Scripts, find out the characteristics of each of them and how they might be playing out in your own life right now.

This chat that we had with our resident expert, Sarah Lowes, will not only help you uncover the script you might be living but also guide you on how to re-write it. Because once you know your script, you gain the power to change it!

So, if you’re ready to take a closer look at the story you’ve been living, and maybe even start drafting a new chapter, then this episode is definitely for you.

What if I told you that these patterns are part of a hidden game – one you might not even realise you’re playing?

In part three of our mini-series on Transactional Analysis we’re exploring a fascinating and vital part of the TA world – the Games People Play as outlined in Eric Berne’s groundbreaking book of the same name.

In this episode, we’re joined again by our resident expert, Sarah Lowes, to help take us through some of the most interesting and often played games from Berne’s book – along the way we’ll discover how these games can dictate our relationships, influence our emotions, and even determine our life choices. But what exactly are these games, why do we play them, and – most importantly – how can we break free from them?

The Art of Authentic Communication08 Aug 202401:25:42

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This week we are continuing our mini-series on Transactional Analysis – a powerful tool for understanding human behaviour and communication. We build here on the concepts we looked at in last week’s episode so if you haven’t listened to that already go back and familiarise with it before launching into this one.

In this episode we cover what Transactions are and explore the idea of Strokes – those essential units of human recognition that we all crave. Why do we need them, and how do they shape our interactions?

We also look at the different types of Transactions that occur between our Ego states. We break down Crossed Transactions, where miscommunications often arise, and Ulterior Transactions, where hidden agendas come into play.

That leads us into a brief look at the Psychological Games people play, finishing with some tips on how we can achieve authentic human connection and intimacy with the people in our lives.

So, whether you’re an actor looking to deepen your character work or simply curious about the intricacies of human interaction, this episode promises to be a thought-provoking journey into the heart of Transactional Analysis.

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

This week, we are kicking off a special four part mini-series diving into the world of Transactional Analysis – a form of social psychology that explores the dynamics of human interactions and those hidden parts of ourselves that often dictate how we behave in life.

For this mini-series, we drafted in an expert to help guide us through these next few weeks. Sarah Lowes is a coach and facilitator. She uses Transactional Analysis in her work to empower people and help them connect honestly with themselves. She is also one of the hosts of the Transactional Analysis Podcast (formerly known as 3 People in Your Head).

This episode serves as a good introduction to the concepts and terms used in Transactional Analysis so if you’re completely new to it all, don’t worry, we cover all the basics that you need to know – what it is, how it works, and why it’s an absolute game-changer for anyone interested in achieving a deeper self-awareness and personal growth.

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

Today we’re diving into an area of the industry experiencing somewhat of a boom – audiobooks. We wanted to speak to someone who not only understands that world, but who’s shaping it from the inside.

Our guest in this episode is Elise Arsenault – she’s an award-winning audiobook narrator, actor, coach, and entrepreneur. Throughout her career, she’s narrated close to 200 audiobooks, as well as providing voiceover for commercials and video games.

Elise is also the founder of The Global Actor, host of the Global Actor podcast, and creator of the The Great Audiobook Adventure – a program that’s specifically designed to help actors break into and build thriving careers in the audiobook industry.

Most recently, she delivered a fantastic TEDx talk titled, The Power of a Human Storyteller in the Age of AI. If you haven’t seen or heard it yet, it’s a heartfelt, timely argument for why human voices still matter.

So, today, we’re exploring all of it: Elise’s journey, her craft, the ever-evolving audiobook industry, and exactly what role humans still play in a world that seems to be increasingly full of synthetic voices.

The Map of Consciousness Part 1: The Anatomy of Suffering13 Mar 202601:10:10

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

What if human suffering wasn’t random?

What if there were actually a 'map', a framework for understanding why certain people remain trapped in cycles of shame or anger, while others seem able to rise above the same circumstances and live with courage, and joy?

In the 1990s, psychiatrist and researcher David R. Hawkins proposed something radical.

He suggested that human emotions, motivations, and worldviews exist on a measurable scale of consciousness, ranging from the most destructive states of mind all the way to enlightenment.

He called it The Map of Consciousness.

Now, at first that might sound a bit abstract or 'woo-woo', but stick with us. Because instead of judging people morally, what the map gives us is a surprisingly practical way to understand the mechanics of human behaviour.

So, in this 3 part mini series, we’re exploring all the levels of Consciousness, starting with the very bottom of the map.

Because in this basement level are four emotional states that can often keep us locked in suffering.

Shame.
Guilt.
Apathy.
Grief.

For some, these aren’t just passing feelings. They’re entire worldviews that colour how we see ourselves and others around us.

And some of the most powerful stories ever told, in film, TV, and theatre, are about characters trapped in these states, trying to climb their way out.

So, in this episode, we’re exploring what these levels actually look like in real life and how becoming aware of them might help us begin to move beyond them.

The Map of Consciousness Part 2: From Force to Power23 Apr 202601:30:02

Send us a Message - let us know what you think of the episode

Why do some people live in constant anxiety, while others face the same situations with courage?

Why are some driven by pure ambition and desire, while others seem strangely calm and grounded?

According to psychiatrist and researcher David R. Hawkins, it’s not random.

He proposed something called The Map of Consciousness, a framework that suggests human emotions and worldviews exist on a measurable scale, from the most destructive states of mind all the way up to the most expansive and enlightened.

In the previous episode of this mini-series, we explored the very bottom of that map: the heavy emotional territories of shame, guilt, apathy and grief.

But in this episode, we start climbing.

Today we’re moving through the levels of Fear, Desire, Anger and Pride, before crossing a fascinating turning point in Hawkins’ model. The critical threshold of 200.

Below that line, people are driven by what Hawkins called Force, where life is often a struggle.

Above it, something shifts.

We enter the territory of Power.

And that’s where we begin to stop fighting life quite so hard and start engaging with it in a completely different way.

So, in this episode, as we climb up the levels, we explore what these states look like in our lives and how they show up again and again in the stories we love to watch.

Because some of the most unforgettable characters in film, television and theatre live inside these levels.

Characters ruled by fear or chasing desire.

Characters burning with anger or whose pride becomes their downfall.

And characters who against all odds find the courage to rise above it.
