You likely know Dan Misener for his work in Podcasting - but I managed to trace his roots back to radio. Specifically, to CBC and shows like DNTO (Definitely Not the Opera) and Spark with Nora Young. His radio days actually stretch back a little further than that to campus radio at Dalhousie's CKDU in Halifax. But it was his time at Pacific Content where Dan began to explore audience development in the podcast space. Yes, he could have continued on making great sounding shows at places like the CBC, but what's the point if you aren't getting everyone to listen, right? In this episode we will discuss those early radio days and the natural transition to podcasting, the experimenting at the CBC with Spark, and the creation of a feedback loop for the show. We also spoke about the importance of the packaging of your podcast and how it appears in podcast catalogues and on a dashboard display in a vehicle. We also talked about some of the cool blogs that Dan has written, the very helpful Podcast XRay that was released earlier this year which helps you find out things about show's like release days, enclosure tags and the brand new analytics Dashboard from Bumper presents another look at podcast metrics focusing in consumption and verified listens to a show. NLogic has been a supporter of our podcast since 2017. In that time, we've had NLogic's President and COO David Phillips on the show to discuss the radio industry's relationship with audience data. In the current day and age, we have more audience data than ever before, and often we can't see what is relevant in the moment. I saw David at a panel at Canadian Music Week not too long ago, and had some questions I needed to ask him. Tony Doe is a Nigerian Radio and Podcast Consultant who spent years on-air in the past, and remains a podcast staple in Nigeria. I'm willing to bet most of our audience has never really thought about the podcast and radio scene in Nigeria, but as Tony will tell you, it's certainly different from what we have in North America. Stable, cheap internet is much harder to come by, and as a whole, the country is much more fragmented- both by languages and by the fact that each person likely has multiple SIM cards and phone numbers for different parts of the country. Tony walks us through the way radio stations have come to handle these challenges, and what it's meant for the development of Nigerian broadcasting as a whole. He explains how he got into radio in the first place, how it's changed over the years, and some new developments rolling in that he thinks could change the landscape of broadcasting in a big way. He also shares some traditional broadcaster wisdom about what it means to be a great radio host, and how to make your show feel "complete." Clayon Kroeker came out of Don Scott's Western Academy of Broadcast back in 2010 with eyes on becoming a sports commentator. Don suggested that he try FM Music to start as there are more opportunities avaiable. He landed the very coveted overnight position at GX94 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan which still believes in the power of overnight radio. Clayton then went on to work at Golden West Broadcasting in oil rich Estevan before landing in Saskatoon with Harvard owned Cruz 96.3. In this episode, you will meet Clayton's dog Kipper and learn his back story. You will also hear about his search for the best chicken fingers. Carlota G is the midday host at 107.5 XTreme Radio in Vegas. We discussed her early career path in radio, starting as a vinyl collector in high school and later transitioning from a medical billing job and then into broadcasting. She was inspired by DJs like Dusty Street and Doug "Sluggo" Roberts of KROQ fame. Carlota shared stories of her early days in radio, including moving from Southern California to smaller markets like Porterville and Fresno to get her start. She quickly moved up to doing overnight shifts at age 22. We discussed the music scene in the 1990s, including the diversity of alternative radio and the impact of Napster. Carlota honed her interviewing and programming skills over the years, including a long tenure at KCRW. Carlota opened up about the challenges she faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, including losing her job and suffering long-term health effects. She praised her current boss, Cat Thomas, for his forward-thinking leadership. We also talked about the potential for revitalizing rock radio by blending alternative and rock music, and Carlota shared her experience of turning around the struggling X107.5 station in Las Vegas. Jeff Winskell is a bit of an anomaly in radio. Most folks attend university courses specifically tailored to broadcast, which leads them into the industry naturally, but Jeff went from film student to radio show producer in just a few years. In this episode, we talk about exactly how that transition went, as well as the lengthy radio career he created for himself afterwards. Jeff's been a large-scale program director all across Canada, from Vancouver to Ontario, working with big names like Virgin and Bell Media. He's also been recognized for his work more than most- He has a total of 13 nominations for Canadian Broadcast Industry Awards, with 5 of those being wins (Station of the year, 2x Music Director of the year, and 2x Program Director of the year). Jeff and I discuss the path he took across the nation, the differences he found between the East and West, and the logistics of being in charge of 21 radio stations at the same time. Yes, you read that right. As of right now, he's taking a break from radio, and finally going back to his university roots as a camera operator. Jenn Dalen-Gordon is the operations manager for the Interior stations of British Columbia for Stingray Radio. She also oversees about 20 other Country stations under the Real Country and New Country moniker. She was raised on Country 105.1 in Calgary and attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. She worked at Golden West Broadcasting, before the tour of rural Alberta took her to Leduc where she apart of the launch of 88.1 the One, and then to Red Deer where she became program director at 24. In more recent years, Jenn was apart of another impressive launch when Stingray amalgamated their country properties under the banner of Real Country. Since then, they have created a second network brand called New Country. Jenn currently works out of the studios in Kamloops, BC which houses NL Radio (News/Talk), K-97 (Classic Rock), and New Country 103.1. This week's show features yet another broadcast icon who I've been a fan of for a long time. Eric Zane is one of many former radio hosts who've made the transition into podcasting, and he's done it more successfully than most. Back when I met Eric in 2019, I knew him from the Free Beer & Hot Wings radio show out of Grand Rapids, Michigan- a show he'd just begun to pivot away from to debut his own podcast. But this was 2019, and it wasn't so easy back then to make the switch. Eric was one of the first to pick up on the new wave of monetization for podcasting, a wave we're all still riding to this day, and The Eric Zane Show remains a gold standard podcast 3 years later. Together, we talk about how he managed to make that switch, the stumbles he made along the way, and which avenues for support have been the most successful for him. We also dive into his storied radio career in Grand Rapids, where he still lives. Something we didn't get a chance to talk about on the show, but that I definitely think should tell you a lot about Eric's character, is the time he donated a kidney to an old friend from high school. I didn’t catch on to his show until the mid 80’s where he became a household name, despite working at some radio stations that weren’t known for their ratings. A lot of radio personalities are initially attracted to the medium because of the music. But some hosts, like Sylvia Alvarado, go far beyond a passing interest. As the midday host on KOMP 92.3 in Vegas, she's had incredible interviews with some of the biggest stars in rock music: Slash, Pat Carney from The Black Keys, Zakk Wylde, and Matt Schultz from Cage The Elephant, just to name a few. She's also a musician herself- She's sung the national anthem at games for the Vegas Aviators and the Golden Knights. Sadly, there isn't much footage out there, but when you consider that you only here about anthem singers when they mess up - this may be a good thing. It's not unusual for me to bring old friends onto the show. In fact, a good chunk of our episodes have come about because of existing connections I've had in the broadcast industry. What is unusual, though, is for me to bring on a friend from all the way back in elementary school- one who's also had an incredible broadcast career, and who until recording this episode, I hadn't spoken to since 1984. This week's guest, Adrian Harewood, has been with the CBC since 2006. Once upon a time, he was the host of a little radio show called All In A Day on CBC Radio One, but in recent years he's moved in front of the camera and into our homes. He's currently the host of CBC News Ottawa at 6, and has been a guest host on other CBC shows like As It Happens, Sounds Like Canada and The Current. He's also a full-time Professor of Journalism at Carleton University. I'm not the jealous type, but those are some lucky students. It may also interest you to know that before his time at the CBC, Adrian also hosted a radio show on CKUT, the radio station for his Alma Mater, McGill University. The show was called Soul Perspective, and was dedicated specifically to discussing the issues faced by Black Canadians, such as racial inequality, racial profiling, and notably, homophobia in the black community. In this episode, Adrian and I catch up on lost time by discussing his past, present and future. We walk through his time at the CBC, the changes he's seen, and how and why he became a professor. | Should You Transcribe Your Podcast? | 25 May 2022 | 00:06:40 | |
In the 6 years since we started a podcast, there has been a total of one (1) request for a transcription of an episode. That was the Natasha Gargiulo episode back in 2018, and the person asking was hearing impaired. Natasha has a very large Canadian following, and I would have been more than happy to help out one of her followers. Sadly, at the time, I was largely clueless on how to do this. Today, I am happy to report that I know a little more on the topic. At Podcast Movement last month, the Live New Media show with ToddCochrane and Rob Greenlee had Andy Bowers, Rachael King and James Cridland on as guests, and the subject of transcription came up. I have to admit that after dabbling with the offerings from Headliner, Descript, and the Microsoft offering in my subscription, I was largely underwhelmed with its efficiency and honestly questioned its necessity. After a brief Twitter exchange, I pivoted positions; providing a transcription is the right thing to do for your show. There are some SEO benefits, and it adds a nice dimension to your website content. But these questions were still burning: -Why is it the responsibility of the content creator to provide them? -Why would I want someone reading the show when I want them listening to it? (I get paid in downloads, you know.) -Why should I pay for this? It’s expensive. I think I can answer these. Companies like Amazon, Google, Spotify, and Apple all have the technology to do this. But there is nothing in it for them. In fact, all it takes is a few mis-transcribed words to launch them into a lawsuit. As for people reading the show rather than downloading it, that might happen- and if the person doing so is hearing impaired, that should make you feel good. But here’s a side marketing bonus you probably didn’t consider: Bloggers and writers can easily cut and paste quotes from you and your guests, and credit your podcast. This recently happened to one of my older episodes, and it led to a few more followers. Sometimes it’s the things that you didn’t plan for that make it all worthwhile. As for justifying the price, that’s going to have to be a personal decision. It’s more than the subscription cost- it’s also spending the time after the transcription has been made to verify spelling and oddly pronounced words. It will likely take you even longer If your podcast is about something scientific or medical, or cities in Wales. As it stands now, some transcripts refer to me as Mad Kendall which I am considering adopting as my new wrestling name. And for networks who manage podcasts, between paying the humans reviewing the shows and paying for the subscriptions, the costs add up. One of the big reasons podcasters get involved with transcription is for the SEO. However, there are some who believe that simply attaching a transcription to the bottom of the episode page on your website will result in Google judging the page to be too long for ideal consumption. There's a lot of potential to make money, or lose it, in Las Vegas. In fact, that's pretty much the whole point of the city. Most people head down there to try their hand at the slots, play a few rounds of blackjack, take in some spectacular shows, or bet it all on a high-stakes poker match. But you don't see many people betting on the city itself. Jeff Walker is an exception to that rule. A former radio personality in Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton, Jeff has turned his voice and experience into a podcast all about Vegas. The Jeff Does Vegas podcast gives listeners a comprehensive guide to the city he fell in love with, from trip reports to restaurant reviews and attraction recommendations. It's become his most successful venture yet, and continues to grow to this day. In this episode, I speak to Jeff about his long and illustrious radio career, during which he found himself in quite a few "interesting" situations, as well as its rather abrupt end. We also talk about how he fell in love with Vegas, why he decided to start podcasting, how he built up his show, and the effect 2 years of COVID restrictions had on his show- A show which mainly revolved around him flying from Canada to Vegas 8 times a year. If you've ever taken a look at the other shows we offer on the Soundoff Podcast Network, this week's guest should sound quite familiar. Mark Sutcliffe is the host of the Digging Deep podcast, one of our largest shows, where he uses the knowledge gained from his lengthy and prolific career in the broadcast industry to give some seriously gripping interviews. There's a reason I said "In the broadcast industry" there, and not just "In broadcasting." And that's because Mark has seen just about every side of the industry. I can't really sum up his career any better than the About section on his personal website, so in Mark's own words: "I've been a daily newspaper columnist, a talk-radio host, a baseball play-by-play announcer, a Sunday-morning political TV host, and more. You know Geoff Allan's voice. No, really, you do. If you've ever heard an ad for Burger King, Bud Light, or Hardee's, you've probably heard Geoff's dulcet tones announcing the return of the biggest burger you've ever seen. I've certainly heard Geoff enough to recognize that baritone anywhere- although I suppose I have an advantage. He is my second cousin, after all. As his cousin, I can tell you that Geoff has always had a fantastic voice. So, of course, it was only natural for him to finish school and get straight into... the hotel business. Yes, Geoff was a world-travelling hotel manager for most of his adult life. He'd always had a passion for radio and voiceover, but it wasn't until he was in his 50's, and in Dubai of all places, that he was able to hit the airwaves. Nowadays, he's been a professional voiceover artist for years, with training from industry veterans in L.A., Toronto, Montreal and Dubai. In this episode, we dive into Geoff's journey from suites to studios. We talk about how he found the opportunity to make such a dramatic career change, where it's taken him, where he'll go in the future, and how much he's learned from his time as a voiceover pro. It's not often that we hear a British accent on the radio in Canada. Especially outside of Toronto, or maybe Vancouver, most of our talent is home-grown. Chris Ash is a notable exception to that rule. Chris was born and raised in the UK, attending Staffordshire University and beginning his broadcasting career in Kettering, close to London. After only a few years, he made the journey to Canada, landing in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 2016 and crushing it in Canadian broadcast ever since. But if you think Chris is just another disk jockey, you'd be wrong. We've talked a lot on this show about the evolving nature of the Broadcast industry, and how it needs to move forward with the times. Chris has been at the forefront of such evolution for his entire career. One of his main roles at Connect FM in Kettering was to manage their social media, and he did a bang-up job; their largest Facebook posts during his time at the station were reaching over 130,000 shares. Not bad for a city of only 63,000 people. While his career as a radio personality is about as successful as anyone could ask for, he hasn't been resting on his laurels. In more recent years, Chris has leveraged his penchant for internet notoriety to expand his portfolio. He now offers commissions for professional voiceover work on Fiverr, as well as continuing to advertise his background in social media and video production. The last few weeks, I've been doing a lot of podcast housekeeping- pitching sponsors, and reviewing the stats, and thinking about what's next for the Sound Off Podcast. As it turns out, it's going to be more of the same, which is a good thing. One of the biggest questions I get asked is: "Why is my show doing better?" Here are some of the conclusions that often come up. Number 10: No Video Strategy Have a video strategy that includes Youtube. That's it. That's number 10. Number 9: You Are Impatient Did you know that it takes three years to build an audience? It’s true, because Dave Jackson, who has been podcasting since 2004, told me so. Even if you have a big audience now with your podcast, because you are named Kim Kardashian – it is still going to take you three years to find that podcast audience. I see this all the time with actors, Youtubers and Instagrammers: They get a big audience out of the gate, and then the audience drops off because those initial people prefer to interact with the star on Youtube or Instagram or TV. But if they stick to it, over the course of three years, a true podcast audience will develop. So if you want to start a podcast, give yourself a lot of runway. Like three years worth. Number 8: You Thought It Would Be Easy Wanna know what’s easy? Doing the midday show on a music station. You talk for a few minutes an hour, and all the elements are handed to you. Produced commercials, traffic and weather together, the music and promos… You have about 56 minutes of the hour taken care of. That’s why you hear the same midday person across many markets now. In podcasting – you don’t have any of that. You have to build most of it from scratch. You will need to produce all the necessary elements including the commercials (if you have any), the intro, the extro, and the music beds. You need to do some show research, show prep, writing, you need to produce the audio and make it sound listenable, and then after you launch it… you’ll need to market the show. Number 7: Your Show Is Not Everywhere I can’t tell you the number of podcasts I review who are missing from iHeart or Stitcher. And with countries like India offering a gateway to 1.4 billion people, it might be a good idea to be on Gaana or Jio Savaan. Think of India as the same size as the United States… with an additional billion people. Yeah you want in on that. And don’t forget to submit your show to Tune In… it works well with the smart speakers. Don’t be like a radio company that takes its stations off Tune In to be on an app only available in the US. That’s stupid. And finally don’t let your podcast host provider submit the show to Apple or Spotify for you. Do it yourself. It takes five minutes, and it’s a pain in the ass to rescue the show later should you have to move. You always want to keep your stats with you, not with someone else. Number 6: You Don't Release Episodes Consistently Ironic, I know, because I didn’t release an episode on time last week. But you need to be consistent with your releases. Those in radio know this better than any other, and it’s why radio people get famous. They are reliable and always there on time. What radio and TV people are doing is creating the consistency that allows for listeners to get in the habit of consuming their media. So, if you think you are going to release episodes whenever you want, and expect people to download it when you want them to? Not happening. Mondays and Tuesdays are great days to get episodes out. Early in the week, people believe they have more time to plan their life out. By Thursday they are swamped. You can still release your episode on a Thursday or Friday – but you’ll have to market through a weekend when attention spans are on neutral. Best of luck with that. And for those of you who do the “seasons” thing- unless there is someone honestly pacing the floor waiting for the new season of your podcast- don’t. Taking a random break is tantamount to pulling the plug on a bath and letting the water run out. We shifted to consistent releases after I had a conversation with Aaron Mahnke, who has a number of hit podcasts, including Lore. He gave a really compelling argument to releasing your show on time, and in the end it's about respect for the listener and their time. When we shifted to consistent releases, we saw a 20% jump in our audience numbers. If you show the listener respect they will show it back to you. Number 5: Your Podcast Looks Like Shit In The App For the life of me, I don’t know why people put episode numbers in the title field of their podcast. I think they do it because Joe Rogan does it. There are ways to put to the episode number in there without using the title field. People are not searching for a show called Episode. I also see some people put the show title of the podcast where the episode title is supposed to go, and they think they are gaming the SEO gods, and they aren’t. They're making a mess of the podcast. I wanted to listen to a podcast the other day in the car, and every episode title had the word "episode" in it. I couldn’t choose the episode I wanted, because the word episode was causing the guest's name not to appear on Apple Car play. So I moved on. Also, get some episode artwork. Spotify, Amazon and even some Apple apps are now using it. If you have a podcast that's about people – put the people in the show artwork. Get yourself a Canva account for free and take the 5 minutes to do some episode artwork. Number 4: Your Audio Quality Sucks I've actually run into people who have argued with me about this. They say, "It’s about the content, not the quality of the audio." Uh, the audio is your content- and it sucks. There are 2.7 million podcasts out there, and if yours is serving up some sort of echo-y, staticky stupidity, the listener will go elsewhere. You need to create a listening experience that people will enjoy on their headphones, or in their car, or on an airplane. If you are producing your own show, learn about compression, LUFs, normalization, and mixing. I want to give a shoutout to The Insurance Podcast with Pete Tessier and Curt Wyatt, who are insurance guys but took the time to learn about compression and audio production. They have one of the leading podcasts in their field because they respect their listener and care about their show. The other thing you could do is what I do: Hire people who know way more than me to produce the parts I don’t know. This podcast was making huge errors when we started out. Our first four episodes were poorly produced by me. Later they were over-compressed and too loud. We made the corrections after some friendly advice from one of the best in the business, Jeff Schultz, who worked at KFOG in San Franciso doing the imaging (and is now at Wondery making great podcasts). He said, "Hey. It’s a little loud. Pull it back." Number 3: You Don't Have A Website If you're in it to win it, you need a website. One of the best things radio taught me was that making your website your marketing hub is a good thing. You need to be found on Google, and having a podcast website will go a long way to getting discovered. If you think your Buzzsprout or Anchor website is home base – it is not. James Cridland spoke on this show about the value of Google and SEO. Take notes. Make sure each episode has its own page, so when you have Matt Cundill on as a guest, Google understands that Matt Cundill was a guest on your show. Remember, every time you market your show on social media, send people to the website where there is an Apple badge for the iPhone users, a Google Podcasts badge for the Android and Samsung people, and Spotify because lots of people are into that. Anything beyond 4 is overkill. If you are just sending people to Apple Podcasts when they don’t have an iPhone – then it won't really work for them. By the way, there is one exception to this, and if you follow the Sound Off Podcast on Instagram, you’ll see it. Instagram stories are a great way to get listeners one click away from the show on Spotify. When you do social media, the less clicks to get them to the content, the better. And if you find websites a pain in the ass, there are a few solutions out there for podcasters. Our Network uses Podpage and it looks nice - see for yourself. Number 2: You Don't Market Your Show Very Well... Or At All Do you know who your audience is? Or where they are? Do you just put out a few social media posts for every episode and then you're done? Well, that might be the problem. Think of your podcast episodes as items in your fridge. Is it something that is stale after 24 hours? 72 hours? A week, a month, a year? Two years? Okay, well I don’t know anything in my fridge that makes it that long, but I know many of the episodes I record from two and three years ago are still getting regular downloads because people are discovering them through search. I can market them with the same vigor as if they came out last week. I have the stats, and new people are discovering the show all the time. It’s not the same people who listen to the show every week. We churn listeners like any other media outlet does. Many people say they're discovering us for the first time, and see a wonderful back catalogue of episodes. Our biggest episode is the one with Tom Leykis, and his audience continues to grow as well. The episode I did with Tara Sands is excellent advice for anyone who aspires to become a character voice in anime. Both episodes with Sheri Lynch contain valuable information on becoming your own radio startup. Steve Reynolds' talent coaching isn’t going to change drastically over the course of a few years... I could go on, but you see what I mean. The same way a radio statio music director is going to program Led Zeppelin on the radio station, I am going to do the same with many of the episodes. The back catalogue is strong. In fact, I read in Podnews that 47% of all podcast downloads were older episodes- So tell people about them. That means tweets, and IG stories, and Facebook and LinkedIn and a newsletter. It also matters how you market. Maybe it’s audiograms and social media posts- and it doesn’t have to be a lot- but it should be consistent. And you want to hear something crazy? I am certain that some people just know and follow the show through their social media feeds, but haven’t listened to a single episode. I never watched Roseanne but I knew the characters and what the show is about. Marketing isn’t really about doing the homework. It’s really about being involved. Number 1: Your Show Is Boring Anything that you record, you can make better. Over the years, I'm certain that my live media game has deteriorated. I am only live on my Youtube channel every once in a while, but being able to produce and especially edit has been invaluable. Will Nash is the afternoon drive host for Fresh 93.1 in Barrie, Ontario, as well as the midday host on Energy 95.3 in Hamilton and Toronto. He's a radio veteran who's been all over Ontario, and has dozens of celebrity interviews under his belt- but his career didn't exactly start out that way. In this episode, I talk to him about working on street teams, moving to a small town in northern Alberta for his first full on-air gig, his transition to a bigger stage in Toronto, and all the shuffling around that eventually brought him to the position he's in now. Will tells me about his struggle to come to terms with being gay, which as you might imagine, was quite the challenge as an on-air personality in Peace River, Alberta. He also shares his experiences teaching Radio Broadcasting at Mohawk College, giving us some insight into the changes the radio industry has gone through and the way schools have adapted for the future.
