37: Create Daily Habits that will Transform Your Day23 Jan 202000:28:06

We often go about our day on autopilot.

We want to make changes, work towards goals, and become a better version of ourselves, but we do the same things everyday without giving much thought to how we’re spending our time.

Let’s talk about how you can create daily habits that will simplify your day and give you more time for the things that are important to you.

If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t get out the door on time in the morning, or why the bedtime routine takes forever, or why you can’t find 15 minutes to read your bible each day, it likely comes down to the habits you’ve created.

I’m a big believer in the power of routines for parents and kids.

Routines are made up of small habits you do regularly, in a specific order, that maintain a good flow. The beauty of habits is, once you have a habit developed, you no longer have to think through each step, allowing you more time to focus on other things.

This week on The Simple Home Podcast, we talk about the importance of habits and how to use them to transform your day.

Key takeaways

  • Why habits can be both beneficial and harmful.
  • How habits can help you think less throughout the day, and get more done.
  • What habit stacking is and how it can help you manage your daily routine.
  • How to start building good habits.
  • How to use this method to help your kids develop kids too.

36: Active Spaces, Drop Zones, and Paper Clutter16 Jan 202000:38:11

There are problem areas in every house.

Areas where you constantly drop items instead of putting them away. Areas where you and your family are coming in and out of frequently. Areas that collect items quickly and haphazardly.

I like to refer to these areas as active areas and drop zones.

Active areas and drop zones can be the hardest to declutter because the clutter just keeps building up.

In this episode of The Simple Home Podcast we’re going to tackle these difficult areas so you can create systems that take away the frustration of active areas and drop zones.

There is also nothing more stressful than a pile of unsorted papers. Paper often ends up on our counters and is the biggest problem in drop zones or active areas in your home. For this reason, we’ll also discuss how you can manage the paper that comes into your house. It’s easier than you think.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn how to identify active areas and drop zones in your house.
  • Create systems to keep clutter out of your most used areas.
  • Relocate homeless clutter so it no longer clutters your counters and other busy areas in your home.
  • Learn how to manage the never ending paper that comes into your home and takes up valuable space.

031: Create A Lighter, More Enjoyable Holiday Season 05 Dec 201900:32:02

Do you ever get to the end of the holiday season and feel like you missed it all?

  • You spent too much money,
  • said yes to too many obligations,
  • packed in too many activities,
  • brought mounds of new items into your home and can't find a place for them,
  • and you feel exhausted.

Rather than a simple holiday season with family and friends, you ended up running the rat race with everyone else.

This year, let's change that.

Let's create a lighter holiday season that leaves us feeling refreshed and rejuvenated heading into the new year.

Let's make space for the things we want to do and say no to everything else.

Much of the stress of the holidays comes from gift giving and shopping. The traditional view of Christmas is a tree over flowing with toys on Christmas morning. But what usually happens is these gifts are enjoyed in the moment of opening and then discarded for the next thing and everyone's left feeling a bit deflated.

If you wish you could make gift giving (especially to your kids) easier, more enjoyable, and more meaningful as well as keep your holiday season filled with joy, not stress, this episode is for you.

Key Takeaways

  • Get through the season without debt.
  • Create the season you want and will most enjoy.
  • Learn how to slow down and say no.
  • Buy and give gifts in a way that works for you.
  • Let go of traditions that don't serve you and create traditions that do.
  • Most importantly, don't miss the good stuff and start the new year exhausted and in debt.

It’s easy to feel defeated when you look at the highlight reel on social media.

You wonder why everyone else seems to have it all together and you can’t seem to balance motherhood and life. You’re not alone. I promise, if you talk to any mom, you’ll find we all feel the same way.

029: Theresa Haddow On Family Time, The Importance Of Art, And An Amazing Non-Toy Gift For Kids20 Nov 201900:34:10

I think we would all agree that the reason we want to simplify our lives is to enjoy more quality time with the people we love, doing the things we want to do. But we look at Pinterest and Facebook and see all the activities we’re supposed to be doing, that even family time feels overwhelming. It’s impossible to keep up and do it all.

With that said, you probably do want to enjoy a few crafts or other activities with your children from time to time.

  • You just don’t know how to fit it in.
  • You don’t know how to come up with a meaningful craft,
  • get it all set up,
  • collect the materials,
  • and still enjoy the process with your child.

I get it. I’ve had that experience where I find the perfect craft online, I spend hours getting it all ready, I think I’m going to have a blast with my kids, but instead we’re all frustrated by the end and the whole experience is a mess.

This week on The Simple Home Podcast, my guest Theresa Haddow, the founder of The Create Kit, talks about her monthly subscription box that makes crafting with kids easy and fun. She had these same struggles, but knew she wanted to craft with her kids as they grew. She knows the value in arts and crafts from an early age and wanted to simplify the whole process for herself and other parents struggling with the same thing.

One of my favorite parts of her subscription is what an amazing non-toy gift this would make for any child or mother in your life.

I love finding gifts that are meaningful and that don’t add one more toy to our house, and this one is perfect. It comes in the mail, is incredibly reasonably priced, and there are many different packages available to suit your needs. If you also love to give (or get) non-toy gifts for your kids, you’ve got to check these out.

If you’ve ever wished you could include arts and crafts in your child’s life, more regularly, but can’t seem to find the time, this episode is a must.

Key Takeaways

  • Theresa shares the developmental benefits of her craft boxes for your children
  • She tells how you can easily use them to fill gaps of open time rather than spending hours getting things set up.
  • She talks about why she started this business and how she was able to pursue this passion while raising a young child.
  • She gives you all the details about what comes in each box and what you can expect.
  • As a thank you, she gives a special bonus for those who sign up for a membership

118: Micro Changes = Big Changes15 Apr 202200:16:15

In this episode of The Simple Home Podcast, we talk about the theory of Kaizn and how making micro changes can change your life.

Kaizn, is a theory that originated in the 1940’s. During a time when many factories in America needed to make improvements in order to be successful. Factory owners were encouraged to make small changes for continuous improvement rather than a complete overhaul of the factory. This proved to be incredibly successful and was then taught to the Japanese in order to help their economy bounce back after World War 2. The Japanese named the theory Kaizn, meaning continuous improvement.

This theory can be applied to our lives as well. It’s not just a powerful strategy for large corporations.

As you listen to this episode, choose one tip to focus on this week and gradually add more as you are able.

025: Create And Maintain A Clutter Free Toy Space24 Oct 201900:43:40

Can I tell you a secret?

I’ve bought way too many toys for my kids. Creating a clutter free toy space has been a challenge for me at times. I’ve purchased toys for them that have never been played with. I’ve had a hard time getting rid of things because I wanted so badly for my kids to love and play with, but never really did.

If toy clutter is taking over your house, you’ve probably done the same thing.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed quickly with toy clutter, even at the earliest stages of your child’s life. As your child grows, has new interests, receives gifts, and so on, your toy clutter will grow exponentially. However, much of this toy clutter is meaningless to your child and can actually be a detriment to enjoyable, purposeful play.

In this episode you’ll learn how to create a clutter free toy space and set up a system to make it more manageable in the future.

Key takeaways

  • The essential first step when tackling toy clutter.
  • How to get started with determining your beliefs about toys and play.
  • How to declutter, organize, and create systems around the toys in your house.
  • The negative affect toy clutter has on your kids.
  • What this process will teach your children and stay with them throughout their life.
  • Mom guilt and toy clutter- why they go together.

You and your kids are likely feeling stress from your toy clutter, whether you realize it or not. Creating a space with the right toys will encourage creativity, communication, innovation, and emotional growth. Getting rid of toy clutter is time well spent.

021: How To Feed Your Picky Eater26 Sep 201900:30:49

Getting healthy meals on the table is hard enough.

But getting your children to actually eat it is even tougher. Some nights it feels impossible. I’ve had my share of frustration around how to feed my picky eater.

  • There’s been nights when my kids didn’t eat anything,
  • nights when we battled over every bite,
  • tears and outbursts (from adults and kids!).

Over the past few years I’ve learned to let go of the struggle and found simpler ways to feed my family and instill good eating habits in my kids. Much was learned through trial and error, but I owe much of my mealtime sanity to a few experts I’ve learned from. In everything with parenting, I’m constantly learning. And I hope you are too. It’s okay to seek out answers for what you don’t already know.

In today’s episode of The Simple Home Podcast, I share applicable tips from a few of my favorite experts on the topic of feeding your picky eater.

I talk about everything from

  • setting the right foundation to

020: Morning Routines, Nightly Routines, And Daily Resets For Families19 Sep 201900:33:40

Do you ever feel like motherhood is just one big ground hog day experience? There are so many tasks you have to complete day in and day out, sometimes multiple times, just to keep the house running and the kids (and husband) alive.

In order to thrive in motherhood, rather than feel buried or burdened by it, you need to set up morning routines, night routines, and daily resets.

Starting your day off right and keeping the flow running smoothly is only possible if you have routines and rhythms in place to help you manage all the to-dos.

Imagine if you woke up to a clean kitchen, had space to breathe, and went to sleep feeling recharged for the next day. It wouldn't be realistic to promise you a perfect day everyday, (especially if you have little running around), but I can promise that having routines in place will simplify your life and lighten your load.

This week on the Simple Home Podcast I teach you:

  • what a daily reset is,
  • how to set them up to make your day run smoother,
  • and how you can use them to keep your house feeling tiny and clean.

We also talk about starting and ending your days with simple routines so you feel ready and relaxed.

  • I'll tell you what I do during these times
  • and what I recommend as you develop your own routines.

019: Clutter Free With Kids- Why Family Minimalism Is So Important (Interview with Joshua Becker)12 Sep 201900:41:17

If you've ever felt like living clutter free with kids is impossible, this episode of The Simple Home Podcast is for you.

Minimalism with a family is possible and as we learn during this interview with Joshua Becker, it may even make the other parts of parenting a bit more enjoyable.

Being a minimalist isn't about owning a certain amount of items or living in a perfectly clean house.

Minimalism is about owning the possessions that bring you life and getting rid of the excess. It's about letting go of the things on your schedule that don't fulfill you. Decluttering and living simpler with your family allows you to make room for what matters most.

In this episode of the simple home podcast, I interview Joshua Becker from becoming minimalist. He and his wife have been on this journey with their two kids for several years and his advice is invaluable. I left this conversation ready to continue simplifying and feeling more at peace with where I am right now.

For me, letting go of the excess stuff in our lives has opened up a new level of calm.

I'm not a perfect mom,

  • I still get frustrated and have days when being a mom feels REALLY hard.
  • My house is still messy most of the time.
  • I still end up bringing extra items into my house I wish I wouldn't have.
  • I still feel guilty when I say no to my kids about a toy they think they can't live without.

This has been my favorite podcast episode yet. You don't want to miss it!

What we talk about in this episode

  • Joshua tells us how he got started with minimalism. His story really hit home with me and I think it will you too.
  • Why minimalism might be even more important for families than anyone else.
  • How you can handle the ‘envy’ your kids may experience when they see all the things other kids have. And how to say no without feeling bad about it.
  • Joshua’s best advice for moms looking for a simpler life. The one thing he tells us to do will literally change the way you start everyday.
  • So many nuggets of wisdom I can't list them all here!

018: How To Get Your Child To Sleep Better So You Can Too (Interview with Lindsey from Sleep Little Lamb)05 Sep 201900:33:46

Where did the phrase, "sleep like a baby” come from?

I'm not sure I've ever met a parent who looked or felt well rested.

It can feel exhausting to try and figure out how to get your child to sleep better so you can get the sleep you need too.

Baby's don't just come out of the womb sleeping on our schedule and they seem to grow and change so rapidly it's hard to get a good rhythm and routine for family sleep.

Just like all parenting topics, theres so much information out there about child sleep needs, it can be overwhelming to figure out what works best for your child at each stage. That's why I invited Lindsey from Sleep Little Lamb on the Simple Home Podcast podcast this week.

Lindsey's a professional sleep consultant and has so much wisdom for parents at every stage, from prenatal to preschool, on how to get your child to sleep better.

I have three kids, 7, 5, and 3, and I thought I was past needing advice from a sleep consultant. But I've got to tell you, Lindsey has nuggets of wisdom for all of us. In this episode she gives us practical advice that we can put into practice today and see results.

I'm a huge advocate for getting good sleep (although I have to be honest, I struggle to make sure I do much of the time).

Adequate sleep is just as important for us as it is for our children and getting your child to sleep well will allow for you to get the rest that you need as well. When you don't have enough sleep your fuse is shorter, just like that of a toddler running on little sleep and we all know what kind of behavior erupts when we're in this cycle.

If you've ever felt frustrated with your child's sleep patterns or just completely exhausted, wishing you could get your family on a better sleep schedule, you've got to listen to this episode. Make sure to also check out Sleep Little Lamb where you can get lots of resources for every stage of your child's sleep and find out how Lindsey might be able to help you.

Key Takeaways

  • Practical tips for each sleeping stage
  • How to know when your child is ready for a new schedule.
  • What to do if you have more than one child who’s struggling to sleep well.
  • How to know when it's time to go from two naps to one or one nap to no naps.
  • What a sleep consultant can do for you and your family.

017: How to FINALLY get organized29 Aug 201900:19:14

I used to organize and then reorganize and then organize some more. I can't tell you how many countless hours of my life I've spent organizing stuff.

Even when I was little, I remember trying to organize my room. I used to collect everything. I was very attached to the things I had and never got rid of anything. I would get new tubs to put my things in and stack them up in a new way. I'd reorganize my bookshelf to include my new things. I'd fill every inch with stuff. I considered it organized if similar stuff was in the same bucket. It didn't matter if the stuff was hard to get to or stacked on top of each other or even if I used it. I thought I was organized, but I couldn't figure out how to get organized for good!

After years of doing this, I finally realized what was keeping me from actually staying organized.

In this episode of The Simple Home Podcast I tell you what I was missing in the process and why I kept failing even though I owned a million tubs.

We'll discuss 3 steps you can take if you find yourself on the same organization roller coaster.

Key Takeaways

  • The 3 steps that need to be followed in order to get and stay organized.
  • Why clutter is keeping you from creating organization that lasts.
  • The step most people forget to take after organizing that's essential for lasting success.

I also want you to remember that you don’t have to get rid of everything. The purpose of decluttering should be for you to get to a place where you love being in your home and you’re able to enjoy and use the things you have. 013: How To Keep Your House Clean Using Anchors And Routines01 Aug 201900:20:46

Do you struggle to keep your house clean, but just haven't found the right system yet?

I've tried every cleaning schedule I could find on Pinterest and have failed at 99% of them. Something happens to me when I put restraints on myself. If I mess up once, I can't get myself back on track.

You may have unreasonable expectations on yourself when it comes to keeping your house clean, especially if you're trying to raise a family at the same time.

This episode is not about maintaining a perfecting clean home. It's about finding ways to implement your main cleaning tasks into your day with little thought.

In my opinion, cleaning should be a family activity. If everyone enjoys the comforts of the home, then everyone should participate in keeping it nice. Of course this will look different in different stages of your children's lives, but starting them early will help you tremendously later.

In this episode I'll tell you how I finally found a system that worked for keeping my house clean. I'll teach you how to use anchors to make these tasks a part of your day rather than an extra task you have to complete.

Key Takeaways

  • The big thing that's making cleaning your house much harder.
  • How to create anchors that will help you get your daily cleaning tasks done with little thought.
  • Why it's important to involve your kids at every age.

010: How To Get More Time In Your Week25 Jul 201900:24:36

Not having enough time in a day is probably the biggest complaint I hear from moms and parents in general.

How are you supposed to get everything done and still have time to be present with your kids?

Why are your kids growing so fast and why does it feel like you’re missing it all?

I’m going to give you some tough love here. What it often comes down to is how we spend the time we have. The only way to take a good look at how your time is spent is to get really honest with yourself about where that time is going. We all get exactly the same amount of time in a week. Yet some people seem so at peace with their time and others are constantly rushing through life.

In this episode we’ll talk about how you can get time back every week and use it intentionally. Stop frantically trying to finish your to-do lists and start being in control of how you spend your time.

Key Takeaways

  • The way you spend your time comes down to 2 things.
  • I’ll give you strategies to change the way you spend your time.
  • I’ll take you through a process for analyzing your time and allocating your flexible time to your true priorities.

009: The Mental Load Of Having Too Much Stuff10 Jul 201900:20:06

Clutter can have a negative impact on your brain and the way you are living your life. This is one of the most important reasons to take a look at the excess in your life and decide if it’s time to make a change.

There are so many reasons why we have a tendency to accumulate ‘stuff’. It’s different for everyone and so is our tolerance level of how much stuff we can have around before being impacted.

Science is pretty conclusive that the amount of physical items we have and the amount of mental clutter we have is taking a toll on our well-being.

If you’ve ever felt anxious or stressed when you walk in your door or you feel like you can’t keep up, your clutter may be the cause. You may also notice these same things in your kids. Perhaps they get irritable towards the end of the day or can’t seem to focus on one thing. Your home should be your place of rest and calm at the end of a busy work day.

In this episode we dive into the impact too much stuff has on our mind and how getting rid of the clutter in our homes can decrease our mental load.

Key Takeaways

We talk about how we get attached to physical things and what marketers do to make this happen at the store.

I go through different kinds of clutter that creeps up on us and impacts our mental load.

We discuss some science behind this.

I give you easy steps you can decrease the clutter in three different areas of your life so you can find more peace in your day to day life.

008: How To Change Your Mindset About Money And Your Spending Habits26 Jun 201900:15:19

Money is a sensitive topic and I know it may be one you don't love to talk about.

However, I don’t think you can ever fully live the life you want if you don’t have a handle over this part of your life.

As you begin to simplify your possessions, money is an aspect of your life you should give attention to. One of the great things about having and wanting less material stuff is the positive aspect it will have on your spending habits.

However, we live in a society (especially if you live in the US) that urges constant consumerism. Because of this we often spend more than we make and make mindless purchases.

This episode will get you thinking about how you view money and what you want your money picture to look like. I am not a financial expert and in no way want you to make all your financial decisions off this one episode. What I want is for you to find peace with your money so you can start to use it purposely, in a way that gets you closer to the life you want to live.

Key Takeaways

  • We’ll talk about mindset and 4 different uses of money.
  • I tell you how you can start to change your spending habits by asking yourself 4 questions before you buy anything.
  • I give you several action steps you can start today to get your spending and saving on the right track.
116: Parenting Without Yelling, Bribing, and Threatening (Interview with Lindsay from the Parenting with Lindsay Podcast)01 Apr 202200:47:11

In this episode of The Simple Home Podcast, I talk with Lindsay about positive parenting and how to implement strategies that benefit both the parent and the child.

Having effective strategies to help ease the hardest moments of parenting are invaluable. Lindsay shares her wisdom with us on connecting with our children through discipline that builds relationship. Positive parenting has become somewhat of a buzz word, but before I really started talking with experts in the field, I had a misconception of what it meant. Positive parenting is not passive parenting (which may be the biggest misconception) and it's not a parenting "easy button".  Lindsay provides us with practical strategies to use throughout our parenting journey. Strategies that work and create a positive relationship with our kids while holding firm limits. You are going to love this episode!

As you listen to this episode, choose one tip to focus on this week and gradually add more as you are able.

007: How To Curate Your Toys And Create The Perfect Play Space20 Jun 201900:16:40

This episode is all about toys.

If you have kids you can probably relate with the toy overload that creeps into your house. Whether you purchase the toys or they come home from another well meaning individual, they seem to just keep coming.

In this episode I’ll tell you how to choose the very best toys for your kids and how to keep the toys to a manageable level. It can feel nearly impossible to know which toys to allow into your house and what to try and keep out so we’ll also discuss a few questions you can ask yourself when choosing these toys.

Your child(ren) will benefit from having fewer things to play with as they grow.

Play is super important in development and by no means do I want you to disregard this, but curating your toy space can help your children get the most out of their playtime and keep you from losing your mind every time you go into that space.

Key takeaways

  • I give you questions to think about as you start to design your playspace (it doesn’t have to be a whole room devoted to toys. I’m talking about any area you decide to keep toys, including just a simple toy box or shelf.)
  • I talk you through how to decide what toys to include in your new space.
  • I tell you what I keep in my house for our kids to play with. (All 3 of my kids play with the same toys and have for several years).
  • We talk briefly about mindset so you can keep it up and stay intentional about your toy space.
  • I tell you how I handle the little trinkets that come home from birthday parties, the dentist or doctor’s office, and everywhere else we go.

001: Welcome + 3 Easy Steps to Simple-Living21 May 201900:14:56

Simple living has been a journey for me. A journey I'm still on. What I've learned so far is that every time I make something simpler, get rid of clutter, or remove excess from my life in some way, I feel lighter and happier.

Being a minimalist and living simply are both possible with a family. Just because you're a mom doesn't mean you have to feel overwhelmed, crazy, exhausted, or run down. You can enjoy motherhood and the time with your kids.

I'm not saying every single moment will be pure bliss, but once you begin to simplify your life, you'll have more time to breathe, slow down, and enjoy.

If you're feeling like you can't keep up and you have no time to do the things that really matter to you, then The Simple Home Podcast is for you.

In this week's episode I give you 3 easy things you can do right now to get started on your journey to simpler living.

Key Takeaways

  • I tell you my pre-baby picture of motherhood and why it was unrealistic.
  • I talk about why I don't consider myself a minimalist.
  • I give you 3 actionable tips you can use today to make life simpler.
  • We'll talk about how to keep your counters clear.
  • I tell you where to start with getting rid of clutter.
  • We discuss a strategy I call experimental decluttering.

115: Seasonal Minimalism28 Mar 202200:20:38

In this episode of The Simple Home Podcast, we'll chat about the idea of seasonal minimalism and how it can help us live more intentionally.

I recently read an article that was talking about the idea of living seasonally. I had never really heard this concept before so it got me thinking. The article was talking about how our lives might be simpler if we allowed ourselves to live in the present season. I started thinking about how I can apply this to my life and I came up with this idea of seasonal minimalism or having a minimalist approach to each season that I wanted to share with you. When I talk about seasons here, I mean both the actual season as in time of year and the season of life you're in, such as newly married, raising young kids, raising teenagers, empty nesters, ect.

Episode 113- Life Hacks for Busy Moms (Enchore) 11 Mar 202200:34:07

"Busy isn't a lifestyle, it's a choice." The Minimalists

Do you ever find yourself repeating the same thing over and over when someone asks how you're doing? "It's been busy." "We've just been busy." "It's been a busy few weeks."

It's become a badge of honor to be busy and still act like we've got it altogether. I want to give you permission to choose a different way. To trade busy for intentional. Take things off your plate and organize the things that remain.

This week on The Simple Home Podcast I talk to Laura from The Mama System to help us do just that. As a mother of 10, she's had to systematize her daily routines and set her priorities. She teaches us how to create the right systems and routines that fit our lifestyles and our families right now.

You're going to love her life hacks for moms that will get you on the road to feeling less busy!
