| The Fallacy of Goals | 12 Oct 2024 | 00:44:28 | |
Are you the kind of artist that sets goals and chases them or are you a person who just prefers to dream and enjoy the process of making art? Or maybe you are somewhere in the middle? Most of us creatives are dreamers, and sometimes we get caught up in the dream but turning a dream into action and that action into reality can be quite a journey. Chasing those dreams can be risky and scary and so it’s no wonder a fair number of people don’t get past the dreaming stage. But for those who do, the lure of goal setting can lead them down a road that may not take them where they need to go. In this episode, we explore what goal setting is, when it’s useful, when its healthy to not have formal goals, and how to identify their purpose and place in a journey that may be better focused on process than results. | Amuse Yourself: A Mindful Practice w/co-host Chisti Friesen | 07 Jan 2024 | 00:53:59
Do you have ready access to your child side? Do you often create just to amuse yourself or do you find you are primarily motivated and maybe get lost in your obligations to other people or a sense of being of service to other people and the betterment of our world in general? As you'll hear, none of these approaches are exclusive of each other but sometimes the balance between taking care of ourselves and taking care of others, attending to our needs in order to better attend to others, kind of gets out of whack. So today, for this first podcast of the year, I’m creating a tradition of having my first guest ever, Christi Friesen, return for a bantering conversation about these questions. Come along and consider where you are on that spectrum of having a good balance of self-care and self-amusement while caring and fulfilling obligations for others in your life.

| The Lone Wolf Artist | 09 Dec 2023 | 00:37:00 | |
How much are you influenced by others in your artwork and do you think it helps or hinders or is just kind of a neutral aspect of your interaction with the people and world beyond your studio? I’d like to put forth an argument for being a lone wolf. When you try to belong there is a danger that your efforts are made and your focus is determined by the pack mentality. The Lone Wolf, on the other hand, finds its own path, discovers things in its less intrusive, less disruptive and quieter steps. There are things that we will be open to, ideas, inspiration, and motivation we have access to in going it alone that is not present to the group. Come explore this idea and find ways to be the lone wolf when you need it while still being a part and getting your muse feed by your chosen pack.

| Why Bother | 22 Sep 2024 | 00:56:19 | |
As creatives, we sometimes go through periods where we lack motivation or question our purpose to the extent that it is difficult to work. Why does this happen and are there things we can do to avoid it? Or is it something that actually needs to be avoided? I bring Brett (and both the dogs) into the studio with me this week to talk about these difficult periods of malaise and ennui and other things the French are so good at naming. We go through some of the common causes, ways to combat it, and one possible attitude tweek that can make these periods more than just something we have to tolerate.

| Interpreting Texture & Time Off for Sage | 08 Oct 2023 | 00:30:58 | |
How often, when you are creating something, do you ask yourself “What kind of texture do I want?” Or, more importantly, “Why did I choose this texture?” I think we can all agree that texture is an extremely important part of all types of arts and crafts, but why do you choose a smooth texture versus a rough texture? Or a simple texture versus a busy one? What is that mysterious decision making process that goes on subconsciously in your very own brain? October is texture month, at least in the world of Sage, so we’ll take a deep dive into redefining texture for the visual artist, how to interpret them, ways to mix it up with texture and why all this nonsense is so essential to artistic design… and so easy to do. - Leave a COMMENT: https://thesagearts.com/episodes/ - CONTACT SAGE Email Sage via the contact form or send a voice mail (use the red button, bottom right) on the show website: https://thesagearts.com/contact/ And join Sage on social media: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thesageartspodcast/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheSageArtsPodcast - GET WEEKLY PODCAST NOTICES & BONUS MATERIAL: https://sagebrayvaron.com/the-sage-arts-podcast/ - JOIN THE COMMUNITY: The Sage Arts Share Space on Facebook - SUPPORT THIS PODCAST · Buy a STICKER! | Design Dip: The Power of a Line | 05 Aug 2023 | 00:35:59
Line is one of my favorite elements! It’s just so dynamic and has an inherent language that we’ve all come to recognize, although often unconsciously, that you as visual artists can use to direct the viewer and evocate emotion. The type of line, how it is applied or formed, or the way it travels across a surface or through space conveys all kinds of information making it one of the most communicative elements in design. Want to harness this power? Come join me for a quick but thorough overview of how line works in art, the types of line from standard strokes to the wild and implied, and how to create energy, rhythm, and emotion by manipulating orientation, weight and arrangement. It’s easy stuff to do but it can have such a powerful outcome. - Leave a COMMENT: https://thesagearts.com/episodes/ - CONTACT SAGE Email Sage via the contact form or send a voice mail (use the red button, bottom right) on the show website: https://thesagearts.com/contact/ And join Sage on social media: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thesageartspodcast/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheSageArtsPodcast Sage’s personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sagebrayvaron/ - GET WEEKLY PODCAST NOTICES & BONUS MATERIAL (and links to the next Zoom chat): https://sagebrayvaron.com/the-sage-arts-podcast/ - JOIN THE COMMUNITY: The Sage Arts Share Space on Facebook - SUPPORT THIS PODCAST · Buy a STICKER! | Hard Work is Good Work | 15 Sep 2024 | 00:30:51
When you are up against something tricky or it’s something that you don’t have the skill for yet or it’s just find boring, how do you handle it? Do you look for ways to get around it, or maybe you plan to just not do that step, or maybe you give up on the project all together? Or do you look at it as a challenge or, at the very least, shrug and think, that’s just part of what I need to do to get this great result I’m so looking forward to? Find out why hard work is not always thought of as good work these days, where that idea comes into play in the studio and why it can really diminish your experience and even what you get out of your most accomplished efforts. I’ll also have some of my own tips and tricks to not just get through the hard work but to reset your brain so you see and embrace the value and all the joy that comes from doing “hard” work.

| The Flow Mindset w/co-host Brett Varon | 29 Jul 2023 | 00:54:24 | |
How often do you get into flow? Do you wish you could get into the zone at will? In this episode, Brett and I discuss the concept of flow, what it is, the many benefits it has for artists, how to get it on demand, and what to do when flow is difficult to achieve. There’s also something about a 70s waitress, walking funny, and Cheetos. But don’t let those distract you. | Make Space, Not Time | 22 Jul 2023 | 00:40:51
What does making space mean for you and what kind of space do you need? Do you need more creative working space? Do you need more processing space? Do you need more personal space, more time for yourself, or more time for family in order to live a fulfilling creative life? In this episode, I get a little personal, maybe a little controversial, and expound upon the necessity of generous selfishness and how to make space for yourself creatively so you can make space and be there in other areas of your life. In this myth-busting episode, I discuss what we as artists really need to focus on and what we should understand about our materials and how what we do impacts the earth. Are you making conscious decisions about what you create and what you are comfortable working with in terms of the materials that express what you need to express while still being a responsible caretakers for this beautiful planet of ours? It is not an easy thing to figure out, but I’m going to try to help you understand the scope of the issues so you can zero in on what makes sense for you.

My idea is to talk about design on the first episode of the month, something we can revisit throughout the month, just little bits at a time, making learning or relearning or just being reminded, an effortless experience. Pair these audio lessons with the posts that go with on the podcast’s social media pages (under The Sage Arts podcast) and you’ll have a working or polished up knowledge of design in no time. | Limitations - aka Creatvie Hugs | 27 May 2023 | 00:35:34
Show Notes: This might be a truth-seeking kind of episode because, first of all, you’ll want to identify how you handle limitations. Do you rally against them or walk away feeling defeated? Do you give up and move onto something else? On the other hand, can you recall some instances where things didn’t go anything like you expected and yet, you ended up with a piece you absolutely loved or an approach that has now become a standard in your repertoire of techniques, maybe even a defining style? Recognizing how limitations can help, can widen your potential creativity, not restrict it. To help you see that, we’ll go over some of the ways that limitations manifest in creative work, the reasons we rally against them, the many wonderful ways they help and why they should be embraced, as well as some exercises you can do to get you more comfortable with limitations and, lastly, how to include more of them in your wider artistic process to supercharge innovation and creative fulfillment. How do you handle the fear that comes with trying something new, unfamiliar, or risky? In this episode, I share my own present fears about a new direction with my own art, how to properly acknowledge fear for what it is for and to you, and ways to work through it when it is stopping you from something you really want to do. This is a short one that might need to be revisited but it will get started on considering not only how you handle your own fear but how to support others as they face their own roadblocks in art and life.

| Not So Evil Art Sales | 05 May 2023 | 00:35:10 | |
Who am I creating art for and why? Who do you think about when you think about selling or sharing your work? Are they individuals or a faceless crowd? Yes, I venturing into a conversation that revolves around selling but even if you don’t sell, considering the value of your work, even if it’s just to show to online viewers or give to family and friends, can really help increase the joy you get out your creative process and your artistic life. I think you’ll also be surprised at some of the faulty ways we look at the process of selling, our perception of money, and how we as artist value, or don’t value, the work we create. | The Necessity of Doing Nothing | 22 Apr 2023 | 00:35:39
Did you know your artistic mind needs a special kind of downtime to be its most creative? Do you give your imagination the right circumstances to play, innovate, and recharge? And how comfortable are you just doing nothing because that is largely what it takes to recharge the creative mind. In this episode, I talk about a particular kind of downtime we NEED as artists called unfocused time. I define what it’s not, why you need it, and how to achieve it so that your imagination and creative thinking is as joyful, productive, and authentic as it can be. Backed by scientific studies on creativity and the brain, I think you’ll be surprised by the importance of this little discussed type of “doing nothing” and how it can affect your art and your process. | Sidestepping Perfection | 08 Apr 2023 | 00:41:59
Do you strive for perfection in your creative work only to find it sucks the joy out of the process or keeps you from accomplishing more in your life? Perfectionism, for all that we are feed the idea the we need to be as perfect as possible, can get in the way of attaining your version of success, if not be down right ruinous for you and your art. In this episode, I discuss the ways perfectionism presents itself, why it’s problematic, why we do this to ourselves, and ways to combat it so you can, hopefully, increase your awareness of possibly problematic levels of perfectionism, and help you sidestep any ingrained need to avoid the beauty and opportunity that can be found in imperfection. - CONTACT SAGE Email Sage via the contact form or send a voice mail (use the red button, bottom right) on the show website: https://thesagearts.com/contact/ And join Sage on social media: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thesageartspodcast/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheSageArtsPodcast - GET WEEKLY PODCAST NOTICES & BONUS MATERIAL: https://sagebrayvaron.com/the-sage-arts-podcast/ - SUPPORT THIS PODCAST · Buy a STICKER! | Artistic Sight & the Misleading Brain | 25 Mar 2023 | 00:38:59
Do you consciously look at the world through your lens as an artist? In other words, do you stop to consider how you are seeing things and make a conscious effort to look at the world without bias or expectations and with intention? Doing this takes vigilance and practice, but most importantly, it takes awareness of the issues that stop you from seeing the world as it really is or what it could be. In this episode, Sage outlines how the brain interprets visual information, discussing the way it can sabotage the needs of the artist and how you can circumvent it’s short hand and skewed way of handling visual information in order to see what you need to see and find the kind of ideas and inspiration that will give focus to your work and feed your muse. | Transformational Practice w/guest Ginger Davis Allman | 18 Mar 2023 | 00:46:22
Practice, iteration, discipline, commitment… do these concepts bring up a sense of dread or conjure images of tedious repetition when associated with your artistic process? Well, we might just change your view on that after listening to this episode. In “Transformational Practice”, I speak with Ginger Davis Allman, the head guru and creator of The Blue Bottle Tree, an essential informational and tutorial resource for polymer makers of all levels. We talked about what practice really means for various creatives and how to incorporate practice and iteration into your process in ways that are inspiring, transformational and just a joy to do. We take small detours into other best practices, whole life considerations, and how to properly pluralize the word chrysalis, which is important when talking about some snack foods, apparently. Come join us and alter your take on the often tedious sounding idea of practice as a means for improving your creative work and your joy in the artistic process.
