| Shadow Monster | 12 Oct 2019 | 01:02:03 | |
Shadow Monster is an angsty and loud duo from Bushwick, Brooklyn. Gillian Visco’s gritty, dissonant and desperate guitar riffs meet with John Swanson’s epic and explosive drumming style to form a raw and moody version of grunge rock. | Girls On Grass | 05 Oct 2019 | 01:01:55
Great time hanging with Barbara in the RFB studio. "Dirty Power" is definitely an album that you need to make room for in your collection. Great songs with great lyrics that's all entirely relatable.
"Barbara Endes writes and sings these melodic bursts of punchy roots-punk-surf-rockabilly complete with vocal harmonies, the bluesy guitar of David Weiss, and the skin tight rhythm section of bassist Dave Mandl (yeah, the guy on WFMU) and drummer Nancy Polstein... I keep looking for new rock bands to like with little or no success. I think I found one." - Aquarian Weekly

Cancion and the Family Band are now in residence at the iconic 11th Street Bar in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village. They play every second Tuesday of the month to a growing fanbase. The 11th Street Bar is a great place to have a drink and listen to music so please make sure that you make it out and catch one of their sets before the year is over. I've had the opportunity to see the band perform live twice and they've been very good both times.
I sat down to talk with the members of the band about the pros and cons of playing a residency, their latest release, "Stone For Stone", and what exactly is Americana music.

| Bandits on the Run | 17 Aug 2019 | 00:59:21 | |
Bandits on the Run joined guest host Kent Koren to celebrate the release of Bandits Live at the Power Station, prior to their release show on August 16th at NYC’s Mercury Lounge.
Comprised of cellist/badass Sydney Torin Shepherd (who goes by the moniker “Bonanza Jellyfish,”) guitarist/fool Adrian Blake Enscoe (“Roy Dodger,”) and player-of-toys/clairvoyant Regina Strayhorn (“Clarissa,”) with a sound forged while busking in the acoustics of NYC subway stations, Bandits on the Run’s signature three-part harmonic voice stands at the center of their musical equation. Throw in some serious cello action, hooks played on various and sundry toy instruments, and a steely spine of rhythm guitar all accompanied by a suitcase drum packing a powerful punch and bang: you’ve got the basic magic of banditry. Their signature, un-pin-down-able sound veers from shades of Motown to brit-pop to punk-rock to good old fashioned indie-folk sincerity on a dime. Bandits on the Run have also gained notoriety for bringing various non-music shenanigans to their performances, including but not limited to shadow puppet shows, costumed characters, and party favors.

Protopunk from NYC. The band's most recent release, "Pastel Colors", was released in May, 2019 but after seeing the band play live I knew that I had to get them into the studio for a visit and see if I could help their music reach a wider audience.
Here's what the blog El Burrito says about the trio:
"Women Of The Night are a New York rock and roll gang, playing songs that follow the pace of the street and the desperate voices of the unconsciousness mind."

Rock 'n' roll from New York City!
The Shrieks are the brainchild of Luis Accorsi , living in Brooklyn, via Italy and Venezuela.
The intent of this band is to deliver music that is first and foremost honest, with a message, and direct. That it happens to be rock music is almost tangential to the essence of our being. The exhilaration produced when making great music and listening to great music. This is what we strive for.
Luis Accorsi, Jeremy Sauber, Darren Lipper, Duff Harris and Jonny Polonsky deliver the purest and most potent rock.

She joined me in the studio to talk about her involvement at the Ladybug Festival (largest all female festival in the country) on July 19th, a European tour in August, followed by the release of her new full length record “The Box” coming in September 2019.
The highlight of the broadcast are the two live tracks from "The Box" by Natalie plus a special Canada Day track by former guests Cassie and Maggie, regular listeners will remember that one of Natalie's earlier tracks was included on the playlist when Cassie and Maggie were my guests in May, 2017, a new release by Stress Dolls, and tracks by two other artists who will be performing at the Ladybug Festival - Melanie Brulée and Lisa Brigantino.

| Deitre | 08 Jun 2019 | 01:03:20 | |
DEITRE is a provocative new wave Glam Rock duo rooted in NYC, drenched in its cultural revolution. Richie Bee leads this all-out sensory experience with a striking, charismatic stage presence, fusing artful androgyny with a piercing vibrato and heartfelt lyrics in dramatic fashion. What may at first seem like an unlikely pairing, guitarist and producer Peter Savad creates a perfect melodic and aesthetic balance with his love for simple, stripped down rock and roll. As a result, this art-rock power-pop pair develop a space that feels less like another rock band, and more like an all-encompassing queer-empowered troupe of socially entwined, gender-blended performers. Committed to their grassroots approach of distributing raw entertainment directly to the people, they have gained trust and devotion in climbing numbers, igniting once dormant themes of rage, faith, sexuality, and self-worth through the ethereal sounding Rock experience of the DEITRE doctrine.

Brooklyn’s Sanhedrin scale boundaries and elude genre norms on their second studio album, The Poisoner. The Royals emerged fully formed from the creative crucible of New York City in 2016. Their groove is an unstoppable force and immovable object, fusing a wide spectrum of rhythms, languages, and genres to create their self described "Psychedelic Afro-Rock." Lead by underground music veteran Jafé Paulino, the group features some of the city's hardest working musicians at the helm of each instrument - Danny Rose on keyboard and synth, Daddi Longlegz on bass, Jesse Berman on guitar, Jett Carter on drums, and Kaila Paulino on vocals and percussion. Together they are the Army of Love, The Militia of Peace, and The Biggest & Baddest in all New York City, promoting love, inclusion, and empowerment with their motto:
"The King Is Dead, The Queen is Too, We Are The Royals & So Are You."

| Vangelism | 23 Oct 2021 | 01:00:07 | |
Vangelism hail from Peterborough, Ontario and I learned about the band when I saw that they were scheduled to play a gig at Our Wicked Lady on October 19th with Castle Black, Nuclear Family Family and shadow monster, three Brooklyn based bands that I have the utmost respect for. Then I listened to their album, Boredom Factory, and I couldn't take it off. It's that good!

Wild Honey Records are an independent record label from Italy. The music on the label comes straight from their garage. They like rock ’n’ roll, and pop songs.

Grim Streaker plays a mixture of snotty, mid-tempo punk of late-70s New York and London, with a dose of the fast, abrasive hardcore that emerged in L.A. and D.C. in the early-80s, alongside a hint of angular, moody post-punk. The band’s sound lies somewhere between that of X, The Fall, Sonic Youth and Fugazi, and more recent acts like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Surfbort and Downtown Boys. Singer Amelia Bushell, guitarists Dan Peskin and Micah Weisberg, bassist Bill Dvorak and drummer Piyal Basu formed the band in late 2016. Since then, the group has been making a name for itself in the venues and DIY spaces of Brooklyn, with live shows quickly becoming known for the wild stage antics of Bushell. The band will be tearing it up during the inaugural New Colossus Festival before hitting the road for SXSW. Tickets to the Festival are ONLY $50 and you can pick them up from the link below: https://www.newcolossusfestival.com/tickets

We kickstart the show with Plaid Dracula's rocker "Glitter Sweat" and then I paired the band's glamtrash with other independent artists from beyond the borough that I would love to see Plaid Dracula play with.
Speaking of which, if you snag a ticket to Plaid Dracula's next banger at Mercury Lounge on January 24th with Daddies and shoot them a screenshot they'll send you download codes for their last two EPs. Do it!

| Nuclear Family Fantasy | 16 Oct 2021 | 01:01:13 | |
Nuclear Family Fantasy's music is an exploration into the resulting impact of being raised with the illusion that the nuclear family is still the ideal.
