River Rambler? I haven't heard that name in a long time. The Rambler is back and I'm joined by Charles Gehr, new owner of Anderson Custom Rods. This time around we chat about how he got started fishing, the connections created by working around rivers, Anderson Custom Rods, conservation, and Irish Whiskey

This week I'm talking with my friend Robin Hill. We talk fish, lots of fish, like trout, bass, bluegill, steelhead, carp, muskies...oh, we also talk about photography, our connection to the environment, and some bear stories.

I'm joined by Greg Fitz this week, and we had a great talk. We go over how he got into fishing, the joys of boats, writing a novel and the work he's doing with the Wild Steelhead Coalition.

Whitney Gould and Mike McCune, of Head Hunters Fly Shop, were able to chat with me this week. We had a great talk about how they got started fishing, competitive casting, Pinky & the Brain, guiding, and indicators.

This week Bob White is calling in, and we have a great talk. We go over everything, from his fishing start, schooling, guiding, and even some art talk. As a slight note, we apologize for the the less than stellar sound quality, as we adjust to a more socially distant podcast we continue to learn and adapt.

Zack Williams, publisher and editor of "Swing the Fly Magazine" and editor of "Backcountry Journal" the official publication of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, virtually stopped by to talk this week. We spoke about his start to fishing, starting his own guide service, publishing a magazine, moving across the country, and competitive casting.

This week I'm joined by Mark Shamburg, and Gray Struznik (the part of Andy Richter is played by Colby Olson), and we all had quite a good time. As usual we talk about how they got started fishing, but we also cover some great tips, the difference between fishing and casting a spey rod, and maybe bourbon...just a little bourbon.

Today I'm talking with Wes Telyea of Snoqualmie Rod Company and we have a fantastic and broad conversation. We talk about him fishing as a kid and his grandfather, rod building, being a part of an ecosystem, cougars(not that kind), career changes, recreating the X-Files with your niece, and so much more.

This week I'm talking to Bob Meiser and Derrell Hanks. We have lots of fishing stories to tell and we talk in depth about the RB Meiser Fly Rods.

Dave Moskowitz, Executive Director of The Conservation Angler, came by to chat. We talk all about his start to fishing, ski snobbery, his intriguing career path, and the importance of conservation for the future of fishing, while only being interrupted by a menagerie of animals a few times.

This week Colby Olson stopped in. We talk about his start to fishing, his love of trout and steelhead, an interest in saltwater, talking with the ODFW, and the joys of the dutch oven, but not that dutch oven you weirdo.

On this episode of The River Rambler we're joined by Charles Gehr, the new owner of Anderson Custom Rods. Today we are visiting about his involvement in an effort to convince Oregon Fish and Wildlife to make changes to regulations on the rivers of southern Oregon. In an effort to make sure wild steelhead stocks remain healthy, they are asking that all retention of wild steelhead be eliminated, at least until there is current, credible data collected on which the health of the population can be determined. With wild steelhead populations crashing throughout nearly all of their range, it seems the least that can be done without current science. The ODFW Commission meeting is next Friday, Januarth 17th, isn Salem so time is short.

I first fished the North Umpqua a dozen years ago, and I was way late to the game. It’s been a river iconic in the steelhead community for at least a century, from before Zane Grey, to Frank and Jeannie Moore, to the present moment. And the situation in the present moment is unbelievable. After reading about it in emails and social media, I lined up a visit with Jim McCarthy of Water Watch of Oregon and Kirk Blaine of The Steamboaters and Native Fish Society. If you were upset by the social media posts, listen to the conversation, and get really mad. Then act. Sign the Native Fish Society petition, and then go ahead and write your state representatives and the governor, and ODFW. And call. And let them know that in the face of innumerable challenges to the survival of wild steelhead, a public and valuable resource that brings incalculable financial benefit to Douglas County, we are watching a small, select group bypass all meaningful regulation and oversight for their own benefit.
